Calhoun Berry

SALUDA — Calhoun Berry, 80, of 554 Bethany Schoolhouse Road, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, in Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Saluda, he was the son of the late Joe Ben Berry and the late Ellen Virginia Sanders Berry. He was married to the late Bertha Mae Deloach Berry. Mr. Berry was a retired construction worker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Louis Berry and Joe David Berry both of Saluda, one sister, Evelyn Bledsoe of Saluda, three grandchildren, Alisa Berry, Amanda Berry and Monique Goodman and three great-grandchildren, Chelsea Berry, Laken Goodman and Autumn Goodman.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 PM Friday, November 12, 2004, at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 13, 2004, at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Hood officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, 363 Bethany Church Rd., Saluda, SC 29138.

Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Patrick Bockus

COLUMBIA — Patrick Ray “Patty Ray” Bockus, 60, died on Wednesday, November 10, 2004. The Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2004, at Our Lady of the Hills Roman Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. D. Anthony Droze. Burial will follow in Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Leaphart Rd., W. Cola., SC. Visitation and Vigil Service will be Friday, November 12, at Our Lady of the Hills Roman Catholic Church from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Hills Roman Catholic Church Building Fund or to the charity of your choice.

Mr. Bockus was born in Columbia to Hazel Roof Bockus and the late Lyle Leonard Bockus. Mr. Bockus enjoyed a long career in sales of American and foreign-made automobiles. Before his illness, he helped establish South Carolina Cars, Inc., Columbia’s first indoor gallery of automobiles.

Mr. Bockus served active duty in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Shadwell LSD-15, and USS Brough, DE-114, during the Cuban crisis. He was a member of Our Lady of the Hills Roman Catholic Church, where he volunteered in various capacities during its early establishment and ushered for several years. He has served on the school board of St. Peters Parochial School; coached little league baseball for both the Dixie Youth Baseball League and the Irmo-Chapin Recreation Center.

Mr. Bockus is survived by his spouse of 38 years, Trisha Pizzuti Bockus; sons, Christian M. Bockus and his wife Cathy Duellman Bockus, Anthony (Tony) D. Bockus, and Jason P. Bockus; grandchildren, Alixandra Bockus, Savannah Bockus, Tony N. Bockus, Erica Howe, Tyler Howe; and brother, Lyle M. Bockus.

Mr. Bockus was devoted to his family. He enjoyed golfing with his sons, the Pizzuti family, and the Antonucci cuginos. Mr. Bockus will be remembered for his great sense of humor, fairness in business, and Sunday pancakes on the deck, but will be remembered most for his “greatness of heart.”

Bossy Dinkins

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Oscar James “Bossy” Dinkins, 70 will be held at one o’clock Saturday afternoon, November 13, 2004, at the graveside in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The Reverend Otis Lee will officiate. The family will receive friends from six until eight o’clock this Friday evening in Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC, 29204. Serving as pallbearers will be David Adams, Rick Brendle, Randy Dinkins, Mike Young, Berry Sloan, Danny Mew, Danny Gunter, and Jack Hurst.

Mr. Dinkins died Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Born in Northeast Richland County, he was a son of the late Lester Dobois Dinkins and Janie Hornsby Dinkins. Mr. Dinkins owned and operated Dinkins Roofing.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Mike Dinkins of Elgin and PFC Dustin Dinkins of Ft. Gordon, GA; his daughter, Jenny Weaver of Gaston; grandchildren, Chris, Elizabeth, Amanda, Jonathan, and Summer Dinkins, Joyce and Christopher Weaver; a brother, Randolph Dinkins and sister, Mildred Lee, both of Columbia; a special friend, Terri McDonald. Mr. Dinkins was preceded in death by siblings, Tom, Paul “Dick”, Tallmadge Dinkins, and Mildred Lee; also, a brother-in-spirit, Bill Coker.

Evelyn Harrill

AIKEN — A graveside service for Evelyn Loree Harrill, homemaker, widow of C.B. Harrill, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shiloh Baptist Church (where she was a member) Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley. Born in Hendersonville, N.C.. to Eddie and Effie Davis Brown, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving are siblings, Margaret White, Fred Brown; goddaughter, Brenda Jones.

Doris Hiers

WALTERBORO — Services with burial for Doris Rachel Herndon “Momma Dot” Hiers, 74, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Advent Christian Church. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Born in Walterboro to John and Janie Craven Herndon, she died Nov. 11, 2004. Surviving: children, Doris McMillan, Sheron Smith, Harry Hiers; brother, Jimmy Herndon; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Ethel Hall

AIKEN — Services for Ethel Redd Woodward Hall, 92, are 2 p.m. Saturday (visitation 1 p.m.) at Shellhouse Funeral Home; burial in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Born in Aiken to Jason and Daisy Turner Redd, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: stepson, Joe Woodward; stepgrandchildren; Cynthia Stokes, Pamela, Carlos, Stephen, Terry Woodward, Jean Long, Jane Sears, Betty Burton; sister, Mary DeGeorge.

James Addison

HARTSVILLE — Services for James Leslie “Black Jack” Addison, 49, will be today at Jerusalem Baptist Church, burial in Darlington Memory Gardens. Hines Funeral Home is in charge. He was born in Darlington Co. to Jessie Sr. and Margaret Addison. Surviving: father; wife, Martha Huggins Addison; siblings, Jesse Jr., Carlos, Frederick, George, Deborah Addison, Carolyn Benjamin, Melissa Kennedy; 2 aunts.

Gene Arthur

UNION — Services for Harold Eugene “Gene” Arthur, 76, widower of Joyce Morris Arthur, are 2 p.m. today at S.R. Holcombe Funeral home with burial in Rosemont Cemetery. Born in Union to Paul and Kate Shetley Arthur, he died Nov. 10, 2004. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of Morningside Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters, Melinda Magarahan, Beverly James; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Frank Ashby

EUTAWVILLE — Services for Frank “Boogie” Ashby, 65, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church; burial in Felder Cemetery, both in Vance. Eutawville Community Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Eutawville to George and Elouise D. Ashby, he died Nov. 7, 2004. Surviving: wife, Angerine Ashby; children, Franklin, Anthony, Michelle, Latasha Ashby, Deborah President, Candi Scipio; 5 siblings; 15 grandchildren.

Arthur Ashford

WINNSBORO — Services for Arthur Mack Ashford will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Glover’s Memorial Chapel with burial in Fairview Community Cemetery. Born in Fairfield Co. he died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving are mother, Onetha Kinsler; siblings, Dora Evans, Eileen Crim, Harvey, Lindy, Althonia Kinsler, Heyward Ashford; other relatives and friends.

Frankie Barr Sr.

KINGSTREE — Services for Frankie Barr Sr., 74, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandridge Believers Holiness Church; burial: Elijah UMC Cemetery. Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Kingstree to Benjamin Sr. and Mary Barr, he died Nov. 9, 2004. Surviving: wife, Seina; children, Frankie Jr., Shawn Barr, Willie Washington , Josie Lee, Sabrina McAlister, Shuntrice Fulton, Minnie Smith; others.

Sadie Busbee

ROCK HILL — Services for Sadie Campbell Busbee, 87, widow of James Busbee, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (visitation 6-7:30 tonight) at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest, with burial in Laurelwood Cemetery. Born in Chester Co. to Jay and Emily Johnston Campbell, she died Nov. 10, 2004. Surviving: daughters, Jo Ann Burt, Jeanette Bowling; brother, Charlie Campbell; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Coleman Bolick

COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Coleman Bolick, 81, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Richard Hodges. The family will receive friends after the service in the Church Fellowship Building. Memorials may be made to Salem Presbyterian Church, 276 State Highway 215 N, Blair, SC 29015. Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro is in charge.

Mr. Bolick died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004.

Born Oct. 5, 1923, in Fairfield County, he was a son of the late Samuel Stevenson Bolick and Eunice Propst Bolick. He survived siblings, Samuel Propst Bolick, Margaret “Peggy” Bolick Cook, William Henry Bolick and nephews Larry M. Bolick and William H. “Bill” Bolick, Jr.

Mr. Bolick graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. Following graduation he taught pharmaceutical compounding at USC and mentored many pharmacy students during his career. He worked at Taylor Street Pharmacy as pharmacist for over thirty years, until his retirement in 1983.

Surviving are nephews and nieces: Sam R. Bolick and his wife, Jane Wade Bolick, of Concord, NC; Linda Bolick Pitt and husband, Joe Pitt and children Andy, Tyler and Ruth Ann of Buffalo; Marion Bolick and his wife, Denise Clowney Bolick and children Anna and Heather, of Blair; Susan Bolick Aldrich and her husband, Tim Aldrich, of Columbia.

Gladys Bratton

YORK — Gladys Childers Bratton, 82, of 261 South Herlong Avenue, Rock Hill, SC, and formerly of Wright Avenue, York, S.C., died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, in Rock Hill Healthcare, Rock Hill, SC Born in Cherokee Co., SC, May 31, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Wardell Childers and the late Keula Parris Childers. She was married to the late Rush Clarence “RC” Bratton.

Mrs. Bratton was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and mother-in-law. She was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Gaffney where she served as church clerk and as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

She is survived by C. Dean Bratton (son) of Columbia, SC, Linda Pratt (daughter) of York, SC, Susan Bratton (daughter-in-law) of Columbia, SC, Wendell Childers (brother) of Gaffney, SC, Mary Coyle (sister) of Gaffney, SC, and Lydia Lee (sister) of Saucier, MS, grandchildren - Robin Ashley Johnston of York, SC, Bobby G. Ashley of Raleigh, NC, Bratton Pless of York, SC, and Alysia Nichols of York, SC; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by Jean Bratton Ashley (daughter) and Bob Ashley (son-in-law) and Adjuel Childers (Brother), Onnie Childers (brother) and Elena Blanton (sister).

Visitation will be held at Bratton Funeral Home on Friday, November 12, 2004, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral Service Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Gaffney. Officiant: Rev. Alan Peeler of Central Baptist Church Gaffney. Interment will be in Fredrick Memorial Gardens - Gaffney, SC.

Memorials: Central Baptist Church Gaffney, 500 East Montgomery Street - Gaffney, SC 29340.

Francis Burn

NORTH CHARLESTON — Entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, Francis Murray Burn husband of Katherine Leona Stallings Burn. He was a retired engineering technician with combat systems division of the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Mr. Burn was a son of Lockwood James Burn and Louise Clair Burn born in Charleston on Sunday, December 23, 1923. Mr. Burn was employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1942 and soon after entered the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After retirement Mr. Burn owned and operated B&B Electric, LLC. Surviving are his wife Katherine, two daughters, Donna Burn Mt. Pleasant, Brenda B. Stewart of Goose Creek, sons James Murray Burn of St. Matthews, Russell Steve O’Toole of Ladson; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rev. William C. Burn and Robert J. Burn. A Vigil Service will be held at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home,1620 Savannah Hwy., this Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm and the family will receive friends until 7:00 pm. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Francis M. Burn are invited to attend his Funeral Liturgy at 10:30 am, Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the James A. McAlister Chapel. The Rite of Committal will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc. 766-1365.

Nellie Canzater

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Nellie Jones Canzater, 84, of 8043 Brookmont Lane, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Zion Canaan Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Daughter of the late Charlie and Janie Bell Jones, she was born in Lugoff and died on November 8, 2004, at Columbia.

She was a member of Zion Canaan Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Jubilee Choir, The Missionary Society, The Senior Citizens Bible Club, the Palmetto Retirement Club, and Queen Esther Chapter No. One of Order of Eastern Star.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. at the Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home Chapel, 2229 Two Notch Road, on today, Nov. 12, 2004.

She retired from the State Department of Mental Health.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Canzater; a son, Rudolph Canzater; and a granddaughter, Persephone Canzater.

Survivors are: a son, Darryl Canzater; two sisters, Edith White, and Lois Walters; two grandsons; two granddaughters; other relatives and loving friends.
