George Rayford Brown
RENO, Nev. — George Rayford Brown, 48, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Mary Regional Hospital in Reno.
Born in Saluda County, S.C., he was a son of Pierce Brown Jr. and the late Margaret Dozier Brown. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Saluda, and he gradated from Saluda High School and attended Clemson University. He retired as a Marine Corps chief warrant officer three and was employed by Kmart Corp.
Survivors include two daughters, Genea Brown, San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Illeara Brown, San Clemente, Calif.; his father of Saluda; a brother, James D. Brown of Wagener, S.C.; and seven sisters, Margaret Greene of Toms River, N.J., Janie Alsup and Catherine Brown, both of Greenville, S.C., Helen Robinson of Oxen Hill, Md., Mrs. Gerald (Lois) Alston of Lawrenceville, Ga., Annie Brown and Mrs. George (Glenda) Coates, both of Saluda.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Calvin Robinson. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial, with full military rites, is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Marine Corps Honor Guards.
Flower bearers are classmates and friends.
The family is at his father’s home, 2340 Duncan Road, Batesburg-Leesville.

Otis ‘Woot’ Butler
GREENWOOD — Services for Otis “Woot” Butler, of McCormick Health Care, formerly of 114 Russell St., are 2 p.m. Monday at Robinson & Son Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Roy L. Norman, assisted by the Rev. Derrick Scott.
Burial is in Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Flower bearers are nieces.
Visitation is Sunday evening at the home of an aunt, Fannie Richie, 114 Russell St.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Anamae S. Kirkley
ALBANY, Ga. — Anamae Stalnaker Kirkley, 89, of Magnolia Manor, formerly of Albany, wife of James Joseph Kirkley, died Thursday, April 25, 2002.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Edward W. and Annie Lanham Stalnaker. She graduated from Lander College, Greenwood, taught school in Florida and Leesburg, and retired from the Marine Corps Logistics Supply Center. She was a member of the Albany Women’s Club and helped organize the Sunday School at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two stepsons, James P. Kirkley of Thomasville and Carl M. Kirkley of Atlanta.
A memorial service will be today at 2 in the Alpha Sunday School Class Room at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Road, Albany, Ga., 31707.

William G. Roche, M.D.
GREENWOOD - William G. Roche, M.D., 68, of 220 Heritage West, husband of Betty Daniels Roche, died Friday, April 26, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Joseph Edward and Jenny Mae Jones Roche. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School; USC School of Pharmacy and the Medical College of South Carolina. He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and served for 30 years as a family practitioner in Greenwood.
Dr. Roche was a member of The American Academy of Family Physicians; the SC Medical Association; the American Medical Association; was past president of the Greenwood County Medical Society and the Medical Staff of Self Memorial Hospital and was a former member of the Greenwood Rotary Club. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was a charter member of the John B. Adair Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, William G. Roche, Jr. of Columbia and Robert D. Roche and his wife, Stephanie, of Ninety Six; a sister, Mrs. G. P. Jefferies of Abbeville; two brothers, Patrick A. Roche of Abbeville and John F. Roche of Whitmire; three grandchildren, Robert Daniels Roche, Jr., Gatlin Geddings Roche and Austin Lynnlee Roche, all of Ninety Six.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Richard D. Harris officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dr. O. T. Willard, Dr. O. M. Cobb, Jr., Dr. John DeVore Compton, William E. Wolf, Roger E. Powell, Danny Polatty, Marvin Byrd and Bob Templeton.
Honorary escort will be the members of the Knights of Columbus.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church building fund, 110 East Laurel Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649-1634.

Buddy Scott
GREENWOOD - Gene F. “Buddy” Scott, 72, of 502 Norwood Ave., died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at his home.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Malcolm M. and Willie Mae Tomlinson Scott. He retired from Greenwood Mills, Plant No. 5, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of Lowell Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Lila Scott and Nellie Shipes, both of Greenwood.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bob Allen and the Rev. Jerry Catoe. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Brian Moss, Eric Moss, Jason Loggins, Steve Loggins Jr., Richard Scott and David Wells.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a sister, Nellie Shipes, 502 Norwood Ave.
Memorials may be made to Lowell Street United Methodist Church, 300 Lowell St., Greenwood, S.C. 29646 or the Church on Fire Worship Center, 435 E. Durst Ave., Greenwood, S.C. 29649.

Rev. William C. Treadwell
WACO, TX - The Reverend William Charles Treadwell, Jr., 70, husband of Lu Treadwell, died April 23, 2002 in Waco.
Born in Birmingham, AL, February 25, 1932, he was a son of Frances Everett Treadwell and the late William Charles Treadwell, Sr. Reverend Treadwell graduated from Union University in Jackson, TN and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He served churches in South Carolina, having served as Minister of Education at First Baptist Church in Greenwood from 1960 to 1969, and also churches in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Texas . He was adjunct professor at South Baptist Theological Seminary, (BTF) and Georgetown College. He concluded his ministry as associate professor at George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University. He was a founder of the Alliance of Baptists.
Survivors include his wife Lu of the home and his mother, Frances, of Waco. His children, Cynthia and her husband, the Reverend Franklin LaMaster of Chapel Hill, NC, the Reverend William C. Treadwell, III and his wife, Christine of McKinney, TX and Christy and her husband, the Reverend Dr. James Somerville of Washington , DC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rebecca and Needham Atkins, Ashley and Erin LaMaster, Ellie and Catherine Somerville, Caleb, Colton and Carolina Treadwell. Finally, he is survived by his little black dog, Salado, AKC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 Monday afternoon at First Baptist Church in Greenwood with Dr. James Langford and Dr. James Pitts officiating.
A private family burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery Monday morning.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Treadwell Christian Education Award at the George W. Truett Theological Seminary: Treadwell Endowment Fund, PO Box 97050, Baylor University, Waco, TX 76798-7050.

Isabel Bowie
DUE WEST - Isabel Virginia King Bowie died Tuesday, April 30 at the Due West Retirement Center.
The daughter of William Alonzo and Hattie Robertson King, she was born August 31, 1912. She was the wife of the late George Henry Bowie of Due West. Surviving are a daughter, Harriet Bowie Bowen of Front Royal, Virginia, two grandchildren, and one brother, Chester A. King of Due West. She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Willis A. King of Clemson.
A 1934 graduate of Erskine College, she retired after 24 years with the South Carolina School System, having taught in Antreville, Eastover, Greenwood, Lowndesville and Honea Path elementary schools. A lifelong member of the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, she was active in the church and in State and local granges for many years. She had been a resident of the Due West Retirement Center since 1991.
A memorial service will be held at the Due West ARP Church at 10 A.M. Friday, May 3, 2002, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Harris Funeral Home on Thursday from 7-9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Due West ARP Church, Missions Fund, 112 N. Main Street, Due West, SC 29639, The Due West Rescue Squad, PO Box 517, Due West, SC 29639 or to the charity of choice.

Nesbitt Querry Cline, Sr.
GREENVILLE - Nesbitt Querry Cline, Sr., age 89, of 614 Altamont Road, died May 1, 2002.
Born in Charlotte, NC on August 2, 1912, he was the son of the late David Gaillard Cline and Mattie Dukes Cline. At the age of eight years he went to Connie Maxwell Orphanage at Greenwood, SC.
Mr. Cline was founder and President of The Cline Company, established in 1948. He was a member of Earle Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and in other capacities, a member of the William Wallace Bible Class, a member of the Exchange Club and Gideon's International North Camp. He served on the Advisory Board of Carolina First, BB&T, and North Greenville College. He was also a member of the Commerce Club, Green Valley Country Club and Poinsett Club. He helped organize and establish several associations through his philanthropic gifts.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Anne Martin Cline of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Nesbitt Querry and Joyce White Cline, Jr. and David Martin and Julie Burts Cline, both of Greenville; four grandsons, Glenn Martin Cline, Scott Nesbitt Cline, David Martin Cline, Jr. and Wade Spencer Cline; two great-grandchildren, William David Cline and Graham Nesbitt Cline; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Earle Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. James Wooten, the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Epting, the Rev. David Cline, Jr., and Mr. Don Kirkland officiating. Interment for the family will be in Springwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 until 7:30 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon's International North Camp, P.O. Box 771, Greenville, SC 29602, or to the charity of one's choice.

Mandy H. Harrison
GREENWOOD — Mandy Higgins Harrison, 93, of 206 Sullivan St., widow of Floyd Harrison Sr., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Edgefield, she was a daughter of the late Auther W. and Selia Higgins. She was a domestic worker and a member of Springfield Baptist Church, Edgefield, where she was a Missionary Society member.
Survivors include a half sister, Pearl Jackson of Washington , D.C.; two sons, James Harrison and Floyd Harrison, both of Greenwood; seven daughters, Martha Cleveland of Greenwood, Carrie Palmer, Florence Dunham, Viola Privette, Cora Robinson, Jessie Moore and Mandy Harris, all of Philadelphia; 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Martha Cleveland, 115 Oxnard Court, Raintree subdivision.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

John Boyd Smith, Jr.
GREENWOOD - John Boyd (Cripple Smitty) Smith, Jr., age 74, of 305 Herndon Dr. died Sunday, April 28th in Greenwood.
He was born in Jonesville and was the son of the late John B. Smith, Sr. and Nanny Tweed Smith.
Mr. Smith was an owner-operator in the trucking industry, was a member of the V.F.W. in McCormick and was a W.W. II U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by a daughter, Dee Dee Hale of Rio Rico, AZ; a step-daughter, Gwen Holtzclaw of Greenwood; a brother, Irving Smith of Jonesville; two sisters, Avenelle Fannon and Dot Williams both of Jonesville; a grandson, Daniel Boyd Hale of Charleston.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens in Clinton.
The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Gray Funeral Home of Clinton is in charge of arrangements.

William Bates
GREENWOOD — Services for William Bates, of 814 W. Grendel Ave., are 2 p.m. Saturday at Lockhart Baptist Church, Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Herman Jenkins, assisted by the Revs. Ernest Cannon and Raymond Adams.
Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Leonard Syrkett, Jessie Hackett, Ernest Moton, Tommy Kinard, Gregory Jones and Clarence Morton.
Flower bearers are Rosa Mae Brown, Shirley Brown, Lue Helen Boyd, Martha Chandler and friends.

Novice F. Grant
SALUDA — Novice Fulmer Grant, 54, of 1076 Denny Highway, wife of Reuben Wise Grant, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late J.C. and Gladys Shealy Fulmer. She was an employee of the Department of Health and Environmental Control, Saluda County, and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Will Grant and Russell Grant, both of Charlotte; three brothers, B.C. Fulmer of Lexington, Dick Fulmer and Jim Fulmer, both of Saluda; and five sisters, Frances Snelgrove of Leesville, Janice Hodge, Peggy Coleman, Gwen Ridlehoover and Betty Patterson, all of Saluda.
Services are noon today at Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Ben Ward, Fred Treaster and John Griffith. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 10-11:30 today in the church social hall.
