Claudia Smith
GREENWOOD — Claudia Lee Duncan Smith, 87, of 419 Morgan St., widow of Robert C. Smith, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Madison County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Clarence Wade and Eva Lee Brooks Duncan. She retired from Grendel Mill and was owner of Claudia’s Flowers. A member of New Market Baptist Church, she was a member of the Lucille Moore Sunday School Class and was active with the Tracts Ministry.
Survivors include two sons, Robert L. Smith and Terry Smith, both of Greenwood; a daughter, Marcia Fortson of Greenwood; a sister, Ada Mitchell of Greenwood; a brother, F.A. Duncan of Clinton; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Wiles. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Ted Mitchell, Wade Mitchell, Gene Mitchell, Richard Crowe, Ray Crowe, Bill Haralson, Roger Haralson and Nolan Crowe.
Honorary escorts are members of the Lucille Moore Sunday School Class of New Market Baptist Church.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Marcia Fortson, 216 Holly Ave.

Josie Marie Floyd
NINETY SIX — Josie Marie Floyd, 41, of 67-9 Bolt Circle, wife of Richard E. Floyd, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of Paul and Lola Brooks Williams. She was a member of Brooklyn Baptist Church and Woman on the Move for Christ.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her parents of Ninety Six; two sons, Deaquaious K. Williams of Jacksonville, N.C. and Kevin Rollinson of Abbeville; a daughter, Anita O. Williams of the home; a brother, Tommy C. Williams of Germany and three sisters, Debra Ann Coleman, Brenda Dean and Norma Jean Williams, both of Greenwood.
The family is at the home of her parents, Paul and Lola Williams, 112 Porter Drive.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Bessie Moore
N. AUGUSTA — Bessie “Shag” Moore, 84, of Anna Marie Nursing Center, formerly of 15 Bay Court, Greenwood, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph T. and Bessie Arnold Smith. She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James A. Moore of Waterbury, Conn. and Artie Moore of Greenwood; a daughter, Ruth Bailey of Waterbury, Conn. and 20 grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a son, Artie Moore, 15 Bay Court.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Evelyn Price
GREENWOOD — Evelyn Ayers Price, 82, of 207 Locksley Drive, wife of Leonard E. Price, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at the Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry.
Born in Calhoun Falls, she was a daughter of the late Brett and Kathleen Warren Ayers. A graduate of Rock Hill High School and the Greenwood College of Commerce, she retired as a Federal Civil Service employee with the Greenwood office of the Social Security Administration. A member of West Side Baptist Church, she was also a former teacher of the nine-year old Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband of the home; stepmother, Margaret Ayers of Reidsville, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Susan) Connelly of Prosperity and Mrs. Len (Jane) Gough of Fayetteville, Ga.; four brothers, Sam Ayers of Rutherfordton, N.C., Lum Ayers of Walterboro, Tom Ayers of Reidsville, N.C. and Joe Ayers of Pismo Beach, Calif. and a grandson.
Graveside services are at 3 Monday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Alfred Price Jr.
Visitation is from 7-8:30 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home in Locksley Hall.

William Y. Brewton
McCORMICK — William Y. Brewton, 69, of 211 Links Place, husband of Doloris C. Brewton, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at his home.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was a son of the late B.Y. and Helen Nelson Brewton. He retired as head of manufacturing from Advance Drainage Systems and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. Formerly of Columbus, Ohio, he lived in McCormick for four years and was a member of McCormick First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard B. Brewton of Cartersville, Ga., and Kevin Y. Brewton of Miami; a daughter, Tamara J. Kent of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Joann Belknap of Bordentown, N.J.; and five grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at McCormick First Baptist Church, conducted by Dennis Lynn. Visitation is from 7-9 Wednesday at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home in Savannah Lakes Village.

Raymond Durant Sr.
PLUM BRANCH — Raymond Durant Sr., 79, widower of Beatrice Patterson Durant, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Anne Maria Rehab and Nursing Center in North Augusta.
Born in McCormick, he was a son of the late Esau and Lula Neal Durant. He was a member of Tranquil A.M.E. Church and a retired textile employee.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Verdell) Jennings of Plum Branch and Bernice Lewis of Greenwood; four sons, Roosevelt Durant, Raymond Durant Jr. and Willie Lee Durant, all of McCormick and Larry Durant of Greenwood; 30 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Henry Jennings, Highway 283 East, Plum Branch.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home, McCormick.

Stella Earnhardt
GAFFNEY — Stella Louisa Ross Earnhardt, 90, of 991 Gowdeysville Road, widow of Richard M. Earnhardt Sr., died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Kings Mountain, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Forrest and Elsie Rumfeldt Ross. She was a homemaker and a member of Elm Street Church of God.
Survivors include four sons, Richard Earnhardt Jr. and Randolph Earnhardt, both of Gaffney, Edgar Wayne Earnhardt of Greenwood and Leonard C. Earnhardt of Spartanburg; two daughters, Bonnie J. Earnhardt of Greenwood and Sarah Christine Crawford of Gaffney; three brothers, George Ross and Claude Ross, both of Greensboro, N.C., and Gene Ross of Gastonia, N.C.; five sisters, Margaret Beam of Shelby, N.C., Louise Greene of York, Ruth Sellars of Hollywood, Fla., Pauline Bohelor and Nell Chambers, both of Clover; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elm Street Church of God, with burial in Rehobeth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Kenneth Hester, Richard Poole, Howard Teaster, Robert Upton, Ricky Sprouse and Dean Lydia.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Josie Marie Floyd
NINETY SIX — Services for Josie Marie Floyd, of 67-9 Bolt Circle, are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Gunter officiating and the Rev. Ernest Cannon, pastor, presiding. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews and family friends.
Flower bearers are nieces and family friends.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at the home.

Ruby Hill
DONALDS - Ruby Belle Wells Hill, 84, formerly of Main Street, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Self Memorial Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Isabell Scott Wells. She was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation and was a member of the Donalds Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Billy (Barbara) Lusk of Honea Path and Mrs. James (Martha) Fortson of Hodges; one brother, J.T. Wells of Ware Shoals; one sister, Eva Tinsley of Ware Shoals; four grandchildren, Phil Higdon of Hodges, Sherry Martines of Hodges, Shawn Prince of Greenwood and Kevin Lusk of Honea Path; five great-grandchildren, Brandi and Alex Higdon of Hodges, Kelly Martines of Hodges, Chloe Lusk and Cody Creel, both of Honea Path. She was predeceased by a brother, Joe Wells, Jr.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Donalds Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Hill and Rev. Terry Greer officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The body is at Pruitt Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7-9 P.M. Tuesday. The body will be placed in the church at 1:00 P.M. WEDNESDAY. MEMORIALS MAY BE MADE TO THE ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT OF MAGNOLIA MANOR, 1415 Parkway, Greenwood, SC 29648, or to Donalds Baptist Church, 269 N. Main St., Donalds, SC 29638. The family is at the home of a daughter, Martha Fortson, 706 Flatwood Rd., Hodges, SC.

Pleas Holmes Jr.
GREENWOOD — Services for Pleas “Spark Plug” Holmes Jr., of 837 E. Cambridge Ave., are 4 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. William L. Moore, assisted by the Revs. Marvin O. Hughes, Ulysses Parks and Johnny L. Henderson. Burial is in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Cross Hill.
Pallbearers are members of Harmony Lodge No. 37.
Flower bearers are grandchildren, Quarter Century Club members, and church deaconesses and Missionary Society members.
Honorary escort is the Black Cats Motorcycle Club.
Visitation is from 6-7 tonight at Parks Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Betty Wilson, 319 McKellar Drive.

HODGES — Martha Anderson “Motte” Nickles, 70, of 4311 Main St., wife of W.A. “Al” Nickles Jr., died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at National Health Care in Greenwood.
Visitation is from 4-5 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

Frank Osteen
CALHOUN FALLS - Francis Marion "Frank" Osteen, 76, a resident of the Heardmont Health Care Center, Elberton, GA., formerly of Calhoun Falls, S.C., died Monday May 20, 2002.
He was born in Greenville County, S.C. on December 22, 1925, a son of the late James Osteen and the late Willie Mae Huff Osteen. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 at the age of 17 and was a World War II veteran. After being honorably discharged in June, 1946, he entered the textile industry. He retired at the age of 62.
He is survived by two daughters, Penny Brown and Louise Powell both of Calhoun Falls, S.C.; four grandchildren, Frank Brown, Tammy Chappell, Wendy Powell and John Powell all of Calhoun Falls, and one great-grandchild, Haleigh Chappell of Calhoun Falls.
Mr. Osteen was a body donor. He donated his body to the Medical College of Georgia, therefore, there will be no formal visitation or funeral. A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family.
The family requests memorials be made to the Faith Home, P.O. Box 39, Greenwood, S.C. 29649.

Bobbie Shepherd Jr.
WARE SHOALS — Bobbie Shepherd Jr., 53, of 79 Audubon Road, husband of Florence Frazier Shepherd, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at his home. Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Adrenna Luchie Sheppard and the late Robert Henry Sheppard Jr. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Greenwood; a daughter, Kimberly Gilchrist of Greenwood; a brother, Richard Sheppard of Greenwood; six sisters, Pauline “Pearl” Key, Hattie Lagroone, Francine Sheppard Scott and LaKeisler Sheppard, all of Greenwood, Corrie Irby and Jeanella S. Thompson, both of Laurens; and two grandchildren. The family is at the home. Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood.

James P. Turner
McCORMICK — James P. “Red Snapper” Turner, 82, widower of Beatrice W. Turner, died Monday May 20, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Jim and Mamie Moragne Turner. He was a retired logger, a World War II veteran and a member of Little Mill Baptist Church and Mount Carmel Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include four sons, Henry Wideman and Carl Turner, both of McCormick, Joel Turner of Calhoun Falls and John C. Turner of Abbeville; three daughters, Mary Holloway Gantt of the home, Sandra T. Durant of McCormick and Sharon Turner of Aiken; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mary Gantt, 308 Oak St.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home.

William Wideman Sr.
GREENWOOD — William Wideman Sr., 73, of 210 Booker St., husband of Alice Wright Wideman, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the VA Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Lexington County, he was a son of the late Taylor and Essie Gortman Wideman. He was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he was a driver for Piedmont Agency on Aging.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, William Wideman Jr. of Albany, N.Y., James Wideman of Greenwood and Alvin Wideman of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia Wideman Williams of Ninety Six, Alice Logan and Linda Foster, both of Hodges; two brothers, Raymond Wideman of Queens, N.Y., and Alfonso Wideman of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Adams. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church trustees.
Flower bearers are church ushers and trustees’ wives.
Honorary escorts are church deacons and deaconesses.
Visitation is at the home.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge.
