NINETY SIX — Services for Oscar Pressley Sr., of 717 Brickyard Road, are 2 p.m. Thursday at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Cannon. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Roosevelt Oliver, Sean Wilson, Ashbia Lark, Leroy Collins, Randolph Jackson and Cory Harris.
Flower bearers are Barbara Wilson, Faye Williams, Chalandnea Gaines and friends of the family.
Visitation is from 7-8 tonight at the home of a brother, Willie Pressley, 717 Brickyard Road.

Ned Whelchel
GREENWOOD - Ned Parris Whelchel, 69, resident of 158 Pressley St. husband of Ruby Quarles Whelchel, died June 3, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cherokee County, June 11, 1932, he was a son of the late Napoleon Parris "Poley" and Grace Lovelace Whelchel. Mr. Whelchel attended Gaffney High School and was a graduate of Piedmont Technical College. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Greenwood Mills.
A Member of South Main Street Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Joe McClellan Sunday School Class, the Matthews Masonic Lodge #358, the Yorkrite Body of the Shrines and the Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife of over 47 years are two daughters, Mrs. Robert H. (Vivian) Woodyard of Simpsonville and Mrs. William R. (Joyce) Hale of Greenwood; a brother, John L. Whelchel of Gaffney; three sisters, Mrs. John E. (Millie) Phifer and Mrs. L. E. (Willie) Collins, both of Spartanburg and Mrs. Paul C. (Mary) Reid of Greenwood; three grandchildren, Matthew Timothy Woodyard, Bethany Elizabeth Woodyard and Noah Seth Woodyard.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 PM Thursday at South Main Street Baptist Church with Rev. Robert H. Woodyard, Rev. Richard W. McWhite, Rev. David H. Corbitt and Rev. Paul C. Reid officiating.
Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Matthew T. Woodyard, Wayne Quarles, Earl Quarles, Ben Quarles, David Reid, Mike Sherman, Ronnie Sherman and Lee Padgett.
Honorary escort will be members of the Adult #9 Sunday School Class of South Main Street Baptist Church along with Steve and Mary Alexander, Jake Duffie, Tena Jordan, Danny Austin, David Workman, Ken Brooks, Stan Thrailkill, Bobbie Dick, Cindy Britt, Steve McKinney, Melvin Bearden and Dorothy Hellams.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2:00 p.m. Thursday.
The family is at the home of his daughters, Joyce Hale, 302 Pinehurst Drive in Greenwood and Vivian Woodyard, 3 Fairview Lake Way in Simpsonville and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday evening.

Ethel Barnwell
GREENWOOD — Ethel O’Dell Parnell Barnwell, 84, widow of Horace N. Barnwell, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late James Robert and Ola Elgin Parnell. She retired from the textile industry, was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 20 and was of the Holiness faith.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Services are 11:30 p.m. Friday at McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tab Scarborough. Burial is in Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Everette J. Belue
WATERLOO — Everette J. Belue, 80, of 284 Smith Bridge Road, husband of Judy Marie Brooks Belue, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his home.
Born in Cross Anchor, he was a son of the late Tom Elliot and Lauren Williams Belue.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Carolyn Cartee of Greenville, Emma Lou Brown of Ninety Six, Ruby Marie Belue of Saluda and Everette J. Belue Jr. of Waterloo; a sister, Mary Turner of Woodruff; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are 4:30 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Union Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Davis. Cremation Society of South Carolina, Greenville, is in charge.

Ruth Ella Chinn
EDGEFIELD — Ruth Ella Strom Chinn, 66, of 226 Moores Drive, died Monday, June 3, 2002.
A native of Edgefield County, she was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Juanita Carter of Augusta, Ida Williams of Greenwood and Lindie Warren of Edgefield; six sons, Warren Chinn Jr., Venson Chinn, Lou Archie Chinn, Jim Chinn and Cain Chinn, all of Edgefield and Reed Chinn of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Henry Alford Mance of Coconut Grove, Fla.; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie Patten Jr. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Viewing is after 1 p.m. today at G.L. Brightharp & Sons Mortuary.

Helen Smith Cogdill
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Helen Smith Cogdill, 81, of Shangri-La Drive, died Monday, June 3, 2002.
Born in Newberry, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John A. and Eula Mae Clamp Smith. She retired from Parke-Davis.
Survivors include two sons, Vern Cogdill of Greenwood and John L. Cogdill of Daytona Beach.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Johnson. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Bill Clamp, Bobby Lawson, Clarence Latham, Albert Ashley, John Phillips and J.P. Davis.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Willie E. Cooper Sr.
AUGUSTA — Deacon Willie E. Cooper Sr., 81, of Wrightsboro Road, husband of Irene Cooper, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, downtown Augusta.
He retired from Sears Roebuck and served in the Army. He was a member of the Buffalo Soldiers and the DAV, Pinkerton-William Chapter No. 18.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Willie E. Cooper Jr. of Hephzibah; three daughters, Willierena C. Williams of Waldorf, Md., Isolene C. Porter of Augusta and Vanessa C. Davis of Fort Myers, Fla.; an adopted son, Parnell T. Cooper; two sisters, Theresa Hankerson of New York, N.Y., and Pauline Sapp of Los Angeles; a brother, Nathaniel Harden of Bronx, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Shiloh Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Stokes. Burial is in Walker Memorial Park.
The family is at the home.
Local family members are at the home of the Rev. Davis E. Morton, 201 Cromer Road, Hodges.

WEST COLUMBIA — Dorothy Cox, 70, formerly of Greenwood, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002.
Visitation is from 12-2 Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington.

Candler G. Matthews
SALUDA — Candler Grady Matthews, 95, of 510 W. Church St., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Saluda County on June 26, 1906, he was the son of the late Dr. & Mrs. T.B. Matthews. A 1929 graduate of The Citadel, he taught school for 5 years and owned and operated Matthews Chevrolet for 35 years. Mr. Matthews helped organize the Saluda Finance and Insurance Corp. and served on the first Beautification Committee in Saluda County. He served as Trustee of Saluda District 1 Schools for many years and he and Mooney Player organized the first Little League Baseball team in Saluda County and was one of 3 charter members of the Saluda Lions Club. Mr. Matthews was an original member of the Saluda County Chamber of Commerce. In 1941, he was instrumental in organizing the Saluda Presbyterian Church. Along with the County delegation, Senator Scurry and Rep. Mitchell, he helped secure the Milliken Mill in Saluda. Mr. Matthews served 2 consecutive terms on the State Highway Commission and was instrumental in the building of many sidewalks in Saluda Co. as well as the paving of many roads. He also served on the State Highway Department Acquisition Board for many years. In 1995, Mr. Matthews was honored for his service to his community by the naming of 15 miles of Hwy. 378 the "CANDLER GRADY MATTHEWS, SR. HIGHWAY".
Surviving are his wife, Verda Mae Etheridge Matthews, three daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette & Dr. Wyman S. Shealy, Verda and Paul Potts, Jr. and Amelia and Frank Herlong all of Saluda, 1 son & daughter-in-law, C.G. and Renee Mathews, Jr. of Sumter and 7 grandchildren, Candi Smith, Trina Scabery, Carey Renz, Lee Herlong, Jon Wyman Herlong, Candace Matthews and Candler Matthews and three great-grandchildren, Candler Smith, Davis Smith and Matthew Herlong and one sister, Raymel M. Harley of Orangeburg.
Funeral services will be 5:00 PM Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Saluda Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rodney Foster and Rev. William Tarbell officiating. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Saluda Nursing Center, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, SC 29138 or to Saluda Presbyterian Church, c/o Mr. H.L. Patrick, 114 Boland Cir., Saluda, SC 29138.

GREENWOOD — Gracie Lee Reed, 58, of 305 Paradise Court, wife of Jimmy Reed, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Corley and Carrie Cheatham. She was a member of Marshall Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of California; five daughters, Carrie Lee Day of the home, Tracy Childs and Jacqueline Reed, both of Greenwood, Jimmie Ann Griffin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Patricia V. Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Robert B. Reed and Vernon Barry Reed, both of Greenwood; three brothers, Charles Holloway Jr., Paul Corley and Jimmy Corley, all of Greenwood; a sister, Mattie Davis of Greenwood; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Catherine A. Thomas
MOUNT CARMEL — Mrs. Catherine A. Thomas, 80, of 24 Fort Charlotte Road, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her home.
A daughter of the late Houston Devon and Lillie Mae Morland Perkins, she was a member of Rockford A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include her children, Shirley Thomas Hagan, Lillie Mae Pickett and Rayfield Thomas, all of Detroit, Susan Laskie of Willis, Mich., Constance Pickett of Buffalo, N.Y., Adlaide Robertson and Johnny Spanish, both of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Spanish of Windsor, Canada, Olivia Mapp of Paramount, Calif., and Ronnie Thomas of Lansing, Mich.; two grandchildren reared in the home, Antwan Pugh and Tyrone Pugh; 40 other grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Friday at the family plot in Mount Carmel, conducted by the Rev. James Louden III.

Gladys McCombs
GREENWOOD - Gladys Anderson McCombs, 89, resident of 490 Logan Road, widow of John Thomas "Pete" McCombs, died June 5, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, May 24, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Elwyn and Mary Ola Davis Anderson. She was a 1931 graduate of Greenwood High School and retired from Efird's Department Store. Mrs. McCombs was formerly employed by Eastwill Sportswear.
A member of Tranquil United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the Clark Sunday School Class.
Surviving are a son, Larry McCombs of Greenwood; a sister, Beatrice A. Page of Greenwood; two grandsons, Thomas McCombs and Travis McCombs, both of Greenwood; three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3PM Friday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James F. Patterson officiating.
Burial will be in Tranquil United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Collins, Mike Riddle, Bobby Wells, Billy McCombs, Fred Eakin, Joe Langley, Clifton Eakin and Edgar Eakin.
Honorary escort will be Blair Willingham, Terry Gilchrist, Terry Darragh, Ray Darragh and Jim Fleming.
The family is at the home on Logan Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 3 Friday afternoon.

Mrs. Ethel Barnwell
GREENWOOD - Mrs. Ethel O'Dell Parnell Barnwell, age 84, of 201 Utopia Acres Drive, Greenwood, SC, wife of the late Horace N. Barnwell, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, SC.
Born in Anderson, SC on November 5, 1917, Mrs. Barnwell was the daughter of the late James Robert Parnell and the late Ola Elgin Parnell. She was retired from textiles and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #20. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was of the Holiness Faith.
Surviving is her caretaker of 15 years, Billy Moon of the home.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Parnell and a sister, Rachel Winn.
Services will be held on Friday, June 7, 2002 at 11:30 AM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Reverend Tab Scarborough officiating. Interment will follow in Old Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson.
The body is at The McDougald Funeral Home where the family received friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 06, 2002.

Beverly Price FitzGerald
HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Beverly Price FitzGerald, 77, widow of Dr. Emerson B. FitzGerald, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Hilton Head Medical Center.
Born in Perryton, Texas , she was a daughter of the late Lucien L. and Estelle Riley Price. She received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Texas Tech College (now Texas Technological University) and joined the DuPont Co., Wilmington, Del., in 1946 as a research physicist. Later, she was an assistant professor of math and physics at the Delaware Technical and Community College and teacher at Tatnall School, both in Wilmington. She was a member of the Savannah weaver’s guild and was a professional photographer.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Karen FitzGerald) Williams of Bellingham, Wash., and Dr. Lisa Margaret FitzGerald of Salt Lake City; and a sister, Ruth P. Morris of Greenwood.
Services are private.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Low Country, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29926.
