GREENWOOD — John Lyon King, 86, widower of Betty Banister King, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Fountain Inn Nursing Home.
Visitation is from 6-8 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

Elizabeth S. Murray
LAURENS — Elizabeth Satterwhite Murray, 83, of Laurelwood Apartments, 301 Reedy Fork Road, widow of Melvin R. Murray, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Ella Crowder Satterwhite. She retired from Bailey Mill, Clinton, and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Short.
Visitation is graveside after the services.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 101 Richards St., Laurens, S.C. 29360.

John Self
ST. GEORGE — John Anderson Self Jr., 83, of 301 George St., widower of Myrtle Avin Self, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Hallmark Health Care Center in Summerville.
Visitation is from 11-noon Saturday at McCormick United Methodist Church social hall.

Mae Hammonds
HONEA PATH — Lillie Mae Hammonds, 90, of 1310 Chiquola Ave., wife of Jesse James Hammonds, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at her home.
Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Capers and Allie Vaughn Ross. She was a homemaker and a member of Winona Baptist Church. She was twice married, first to the late Samuel Chadwick.
Survivors include her husband of the home; five sons, James Wilbur Hammonds of the home, Jimmy Chadwick of Abbeville, Samuel Chadwick Jr. of Level Land, Dewey Chadwick of Honea Path and Randall Chadwick of Donalds; two daughters, Beatrice Ashley of Due West and Nellie Ruth Gunnells of Belton; two brothers, Zebb Ross and William “Doc” Ross, both of Hickory Tavern; 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services are 3 p.m. today in Eastview Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. William “Pete” George.
Visitation is from 1-2:30 today at Pruitt Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, S.C. 29621 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Connie Covin Patton
ABBEVILLE — Services for Connie Covin Patton, of 84 Harper Heights, are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Long Cane A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Revs. A.R. Kollock Sr., Clinton Hall II and J.J. Robinson. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are cousins and friends, and flower bearers are classmates.
The family is at the home.
Brown and Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

John Franklin Rowland
CROSS HILL — John Franklin Rowland, 55, of 201 Billy Leopard Road, husband of Carol V. Rowland, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at his home.
Born in Paintsville, Ky., he was a son of Creval and Ruth Gullett Rowland. He was a former truck driver and a member of Cross Hill First Baptist Church. Serving in the Army for four years, he was a member of the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions and received three Purple Hearts and two Army Commendation Medals for heroism in Vietnam.
Survivors include his parents of Hager Hill, Ky.; his wife of the home; two sons, Keith Rowland of Leander, Ky., and Robert “Robbie” Richardson of Pea Ridge, N.C.; four daughters, Johneta Michele Varney of Leander, Johnna Lynn Rowland of Paintsville, Tammy Lazzaro of Cross Hill and Annette Stephens of Hendersonville, N.C.; six brothers, Glenn Rowland, Henry Rowland, Mike Rowland, Clifford Rowland, Richard “Ricky” Rowland and Kennen “Happy” Rowland, all of Paintsville; a sister, Jenny Rowland of Paintsville; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be in Paintsville, with a memorial service at a later date.
Gray Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge.

Frances Bond
ABBEVILLE — Frances Anglin Bond, 75, of 105 Railroad St., wife of William Carl Bond Sr., died Monday, June 17, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Ware Shoals, she was a daughter of the late Conyers and Mattie Hall Anglin. She was a retired cloth inspector with Abbeville Mills and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Billy Bond of Greenwood; two daughters, Darnell Hughes of Wilmington, N.C., and Marian Michael of Boone, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Driver of Dallas, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Earl Hartley. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 405 W. Greenwood St., Abbeville, S.C. 29620.

Rosa L. Holden
ROSMAN, N.C. — Rosa L. Holden, 92, widow of Earl Holden, died Monday, June 17, 2002.
Born in Lynn, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John and Meda R. Lyday. A homemaker and quilter, she was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Shelton of Pickens, S.C., and Edna Robinson of Greenwood, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home, Brevard, conducted by the Rev. Bert Dodson. Burial is in Reid Cemetery in Sapphire.
Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 414-A Pettigru St., Greenville, S.C. 29601.

Eula Lawton
CALHOUN FALLS — Eula Inez Evans Lawton, 77, of 622 Cherokee St., wife of Joe H. Lawton, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at her home.
A native of Hart County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Wiley Richard and Mary Edna Tyner Evans. She was a retired battery assembler in the textile industry and a member of Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Faye Grubbs of Calhoun Falls; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Calhoun Falls Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Virgil Manning and Lawrence Johnson. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Mabel Smith Rogers
PHILADELPHIA — Mabel Smith Rogers, 67, of 1824 N. Bouvier St., widow of Phillip Rogers, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at a Philadelphia hospital.
Born in Ninety Six, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Smith and Cora Boyd Nathan Smith. She was a graduate of Brewer High School, Greenwood, a former member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Ninety Six and a member of Love Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
Survivors include a son, Phillip “Wayne” Rogers of Philadelphia; two sisters, Lillie “Doll Baby” Holloway of Greenwood and Blanchie Bowie of Philadelphia; four brothers, Archie Smith, John Henry Smith, Bennie Smith and James Allen Smith, all of Philadelphia; and a grandson.
Services are Saturday at Love Zion Baptist Church.
John H. Jones Funeral Home, 840 N. 12th St., is in charge.

James "Chandler" Cecil Smith
GREENWOOD - After a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis, embraced by God, sur-rounded by the love and presence of his family, Chandler peacefully passed away on June 18, 2002 in Palmetto Richland Hospital. He was 12 years old.
Chandler is survived by his mother, Wendy Smith and foster sister, Ashley Bannerman, both of the home, 2510 Kateway Drive. In addition, he is survived by his grandparents, Cecil and Frances Smith of Greenwood; two uncles, Mady Smith of Greenwood and Chad Smith of San Francisco, CA; and an aunt, Jamie Smith of Columbia.
Chandler attended East End Elementary School, where he was a fifth grade student in Mrs. Gable's class.
Before declining health, Chandler was known to run the neighborhood, visiting all of his friends, trading Pokemon cards, or having a simple chat with the elders.
As Chandler's health declined, he turned more to watching T.V. and acquired quite a collection of videos.
While we are relieved that he no longer has to endure the pain and limitations that were increasingly with him, his death leaves a large hole in many lives and he will be sincerely missed by all who came to know and love him.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Patton and the Rev. Joseph Ouzts officiating. Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Michael Thompson, Greg Murray, Bob Murray, Doug Ferqueron, Jeff Wright and Felton Burton.
Honorary escort will be the teachers, staff and students of East End Elementary School, Rev. George Hill, Dr. Roxanne Marcille, staff of Pediatric Pulmonary Center, Columbia, pediatric nursing staff of Palmetto Richland Hospital, pediatric nurses of Self Regional Medical Center, Sam Strickland, Johnny Chandler, David Dillashaw and Gerri Stewart of the Easter Seals Society of Greenwood.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family is at the home.

‘Butch’ Boyd
GREENWOOD — Thomas Murrell “Butch” Boyd, 59, widower of Peggy Banes Boyd, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Joseph Murrell Boyd and Ruthie Fellows Boyd Potts. He was an Army veteran and an employee of Jody’s Stripping. He was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include a brother, Joe Boyd of Greenwood; two sisters, Jennie Boyd Wilkerson of Valdosta, Ga., and Shirley Boyd Pelfrey of Donalds; a son, Kenneth Lee Boyd of Greenwood; two daughters, Debra H. Batson of Abbeville and Toby Griffin of Cross Hill; stepchildren, Kim Trotter, Phillip Trotter and Robin Trotter, all of Greenwood; and five grandchildren.
There will be a private memorial service.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Bessie Mae Davis
SILVERSTREET — Bessie Mae Davis, 62, of 30592 Highway 34, wife of Ernest Davis, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Henry E. Wilson and Mamie Ezell Cannon. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church and a retiree of ISE America of Newberry.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Darnell Brown of Ladson, Anthony Leroy Boyd of Columbia and Rickey Davis of Silverstreet; four daughters, Irene Davis, Ernestine Gallman, Ossie Mae Davis and Sheila Ann Davis, all of Silverstreet; two sisters, Brilliantine Satterwhite of Junction City, Kansas and Delores Eggleston of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, James Henry Cannon Jr. of Newberry; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Belmont Baptist Church. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Viewing begins 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Wilson Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge.

Shayla McDonald
GREENWOOD — Shayla Dawn McDonald, infant daughter of Brandon Michael and Natasha Able McDonald of 105 Melanie Court, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her parents of the home; maternal grandparents, Thomas Sr. and Denise Able of Ninety Six; paternal grandparents, James M. McDonald of Waterloo and Sheila Renee Reagan of Fort Worth, Texas ; maternal great-grandparents, Richard and Clara Able of Ninety Six, Jessie Walker of Waterloo, Walter C. and Helen J. Suits of Greenwood; paternal great-grandparents, Bob and Joyce Reagan of Sumter, James L. and Dorothy McDonald of Waterloo.
Graveside services are at 2 Sunday in Oakbrook Memorial Park, conducted by the Revs. Bob Reagan and Wallace Purvis.
Visitation is at the home from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.
