David Hatch
COLUMBIA - David Lincoln Hatch died at his home on July 2, 2002. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge of the funeral, which will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, SC on Friday, July 5, at 11:00.
David Hatch was born October 2, 1910, in Belmont, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College and received his doctorate in sociology from Harvard University in 1947. He taught at the University of Kentucky, Syracuse University and James Madison University before joining the faculty at the University of South Carolina. There he became head of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in 1970. On retirement from the University, then mandatory at age sixty-five, he continued his career at Benedict College where he taught until 1991.
Dave Hatch will always be remembered as the most patient father and the most loving and devoted husband. His children especially like to recall his boyish sense of humor. He was keenly intelligent, principled in his actions, and willing, throughout his life, to stand for his beliefs.
Nevertheless, Dave was always kind, tolerant and gentle. The loss of his wife, Mary, in April was more than his sensitive nature could bear and he quickly declined following her death.
The family of the young David Hatch owned a summer cottage near Princeton, Massachusetts, named "The Nest" by his father, but Dave always referred to it as "The Cottage." There he spent childhood summers with his brother Win fishing, hiking, building a golf course and fetching blocks of ice from the old icehouse. There was no running water, indoor plumbing or electricity, but Dave remembered it as heaven.
While at Dartmouth, Dave was a member of the Casque and Gauntlet and captain of the gymnastics team on which he won recognition for his performance on the rings. He was invited to train for the 1932 United States Olympics team, but was prevented from doing so by a skiing accident. Not discouraged, he traveled with Dartmouth friends to Los Angeles to watch the Olympics, supporting himself while in California by working to construct a sea wall to protect the old Spanish mission church at Capistrano. Being a redhead, Dave's fair skin always showed the effects of that summer's hot sun.
In 1938, Dave sailed with a high school friend to Casablanca in North Africa and then to Naples, Italy. There the companions purchased one-speed bikes for a tour that took them through Italy, across the Alps and into Central Europe, finishing in Germany and France. His journal, which included interviews with persons he met along the way, provides keen insight into a Europe on the brink of war.
Because of his belief that killing was wrong, David Hatch chose the unpopular role of serving as a conscientious objector in World War II. He gave up his studies at Harvard for four years to perform alternate service as a laborer on a chicken farm in Massachusetts. The very long hours of work were difficult, especially in winter, but supported by his strong convictions and Mary, whom he had recently married, he often said these were the happiest years of his life.
David Hatch was talented in many things. Friends and family knew of his artistic skills, which he put to use drawing personalized Easter bunnies for his children and grandchildren. All who met him were aware of his love of conversation. He preferred to engage others about their lives rather than discoursing upon his own.
Dave Hatch leaves four children: Charles Hatch of Newberry, Abby Hatch Cleland of Greenwood, Faith Winslow Mann of Atlanta, GA, and Elizabeth Hatch Dimmery of Matthews, North Carolina. He has seven grandchildren; David Paul Hatch, Lisa Hatch Evans, Chassy Cleland, Roper Cleland, William "B" Mann, Katie Dimmery and Drew Dimmery. His three great-grandchildren are Tyler Northam, Samantha Evans, and Kimberly Evans. Instead of flowers, friends are asked to donate to Thomas Cooper Library of USC (803-777-3142) or Dartmouth College (1-800-228-1769).
