Lulu ‘Cindy’ Elgin
HONEA PATH — Lulu Iola “Cindy” Herndon Elgin, 90, of 504 Laurel St., widow of Lauren C. “L.C.” Elgin, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, N.C.
Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Herndon. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include a son, Bill Elgin of Coral Springs, Fla.; a sister, Corrine Smith of New York; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 Thursday at the Cox Funeral Home in Belton, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Barden. Burial is in Eastview Cemetery in Honea Path.
Visitation is from 9-11 Thursday at the funeral home.

Claude Gibson
GREENWOOD — Claude Thomas Gibson, 75, of 103 Benjamin St., husband of Margie Johnson Gibson, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at his home.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James and Mable Hopwood Gibson. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Piedmont Technical College and was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was retired from Greenwood Mills-Mathews Plant as supervisor of carding and spinning. He was a member and deacon of Woodfields Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Jack Sizemore Sunday School Class of the church and was a member of Mathews Masonic Lodge 358.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Thyra G. Gatrost of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Teresa G. Morrow of Greenwood; two brothers, Lewis Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., and Rudolph Streetman of Anderson; a sister, Martha Huff of Anderson; and three grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Thursday at Woodfields Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Robert Miller and the Rev. Reuel Westbrook. Burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers will be Howard Cook, Chip Cook Mack Tharpe, Ricky Chastain, Larry Kingsmore, Jimmy McClain, Tom Anderson, Terry Gibson and Tommy Williams.
Honorary escorts will be the men of Woodfields Baptist Church along with Speck Chastain, Leroy Banes, Bill Sullivan, Mack Thornton, James Rowe, Marion McClain and Gilbert McClain.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home in Fairforest.

Joe ‘Archie’ King
MCCORMICK — Joe “Archie” King, 55, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick, he was a son of the late John and Ruth Wideman King. He was a carpenter, retired from the construction business, a member of McCormick Pentecostal Church, and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, having served three tours.
Survivors include two daughters, China Marie King and Meronda Gail King, both of McCormick; four brothers, John Willie King of Greenwood, James Claude King and Jerry Gordon King, both of McCormick, and Jackson Ray “Butch” King of Callison; two sisters, Betty Ruth K. Weeks of Greenwood and Ruby Bernice King of McCormick; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services are at 11 Thursday at Plum Branch Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Marion Argo.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a sister, Ruby Bernice King, 378 West, McCormick.
Strom Funeral Home is in charge.

James Nedwards
GREENWOOD — Services for James “Bubba” Nedwards are at 11 Thursday at Weston Chapel A.M.E church, conducted by the Rev. Willie Neal Norman,Jr. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Harry Rice, Larry Rice, Robert Henderson, James Starks, Charles Starks and Roosevelt Starks, Jr.
Honorary escorts are stewards and trustees of the church.
Flower bearers are members of the Women Missionary Society.

Jack F. Owens
GEORGETOWN, Del. — Jack F. Owens, 72, of Georgetown, husband of Donna Owens, died Sunday, July 7, 2002.
Born in Easley, S.C., he was a son of the late Furman (Snag) and Marge D. Owens. He was a graduate of Easley High School and was recognized for athletic accomplishments in the Hall of Fame in October 2000, and graduated from Furman University in 1952. He received honorary doctorate degrees from Wilmington College and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. He was chairman of the Delmarva Chicken Festival, the Arthritis Foundation, the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Ducks Unlimited and a board member of the Beebe Medical Center. He served in the United States Marine Corps, was a coach and educational administrator in Pickens County, S.C., and served in administration at Greenville Technical College, Greenville, S.C. He was the first administrator of Delaware Technical & Community College for 28 years, and the Southern Campus was renamed the Jack F. Owens Campus in his honor.
Survivors include his wife of the home; children, Shannon Owens, Jay Owens, Kara Owens, Dr. Jacquelyn O. Wilson, Tracy O. Hudson and Dr. Michael R. Owens, a stepson, Tim Esham; a brother, Gerald R. Owens of Greenwood; and six grandchildren.
Services are at noon today at Grace Methodist Church, 7 South King Street, Georgetown, Delaware. Burial is in Woodlawn Cemetery in Georgetown.
Visitation is today from 9 a.m.-noon at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Jack F. Owens Scholarship Fund, c/o Barbara Ridgely, Delaware Technical & Community College, P.O. Box 610, Georgetown, Delaware, 19947.

Wilbur Carroll Smith
JOHNSTON — Wilbur Carroll Smith, 69, of Johnston, husband of JoLynn Rhodes Smith, died Monday, July 8, 2002.
A native of Edgefield County, he was a son of the late John D. and Bessie Butler Smith. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, was a member of American Legion Post 154 and Providence Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carolyn Eustace; two sons, David and John Smith; two sisters, James Edward Smith and J.D. Smith; a sister, Frances Waites; and 7 grandchildren.
Services are at 11 Thursday at Providence Baptist Church. Burial is in Philippi Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Bland Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 1701 Highway 191, Johnston, S.C., 29832.

GREENWOOD — Services for Callie Mae Spearman of 715 Clem Road, are at 1 Thursday at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Annette Edwards, assisted by Elders George Devlin and Rufus Jennings, the Revs. Buelah Reagins, Robin Harris, Johnny Henderson and Bishop Emanuel Spearman. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at noon.
Pallbearers are Barry Abrams, Charlie W. Spearman Jr., Chris Spearman, Darren Hartwell, Michael Riley and Bennie Aye.

James Wilson Sr.
HODGES — James “Jim” Wilson Sr., 81, of 5712 Highway 185, husband of Annie Lee Griffin Wilson, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville, he was a son of the late Hattie Wilson and Tom Fisher. He was retired from Greenwood Mills-Mathews Plant, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a former trustee of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Lucy Stevens of Hodges; a son, Allen Wilson of Hodges; a brother, Leroy Wilson of Cokesbury; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Friday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. Willie Joe Frazier. Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are friends of the family, and Melvin Brooks, John Davis Jr. and Willie Richardson.
Honorary escorts are deacons and trustees of the church.

Samuel J. Carroll
GREENWOOD — Samuel J. “Sammie” Carroll, 46, of 208 Windmill Circle, former husband of Joyce Smith Carroll, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
He was a son of the late Richard and Alice C. Chappell Carroll. He was a 1974 graduate of Greenwood High School, a member of Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church-Epworth, and was a construction worker.
Survivors include two sons, Kelsey Smith of Greenwood, and Dwayne Gray of Atlanta; five daughters, Mrs. Stanley (Alicia) Chapman of Seneca, Phedra Carroll, Muffy Carroll and Ashley Carroll, all of Greenwood, and Taleka Anderson of Charlotte; a brother, Richard Douglas Carroll of Greenwood; a sister, Jacqueline Stinson of Greenwood; and 11 grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Phedra Carroll, 519 Parkland Place Road and his sister, Jacqueline Stinson, 1304 Henderson Avenue.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

GREENWOOD — Services for Samuel J. “Sammie” Carroll, of 208 Windmill Circle, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Weston Chapel A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie Neal, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Clyde Cannon. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Herbert Miller, Alain Gonzalez, Tommy Banks, Wayne White, Randolph Jackson, Larry Goode and Ed Edwards.
Flower bearers are Renae Settles, Mary Ruth Leake, Melissa Moore, Annie R. Blocker, Latonga Johnson and Michelle Carroll.
Visitation begins at 7 tonight at the home of a daughter, Phedra Carroll, 519 Parkland Place Road.

Barry Hairston
GREENWOOD — Robert Barrington “Barry” Hairston, 40, resident of 108 Lyman Street, husband of Shannon Sexton Hairston, died July 11, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clinton, April 9, 1962, he was a son of Sharon O’Shields Whiteford and the late James Dorrah Hairston, Jr. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and his mother and stepfather, Frank Whiteford, of Clinton are two daughters, Liz Burns and Leigh Anne Hairston, both of Clinton; a son, Barry Hairston of Clinton; three sisters, Mandy Hairston Snow, Diane Howard and Barry Jean Rogers, all of Clinton; a brother, James Dorrah Hairston, III of Clinton; two grandsons, Taylor and Shane Burns.
Funeral services will be conducted 2PM Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Clinton with Rev. Blake Carwell officiating.
Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Chris Snow, Harvey Dickert, Wayne Templeton, Jr., Mark Phillips, Drew Sexton and Jamie Snelgrove.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1PM Saturday.
The family is at the homes of Jim and Gail Sexton, 803 Wright Avenue and Frank and Sharon Whiteford, 1543 Hwy 56S in Clinton and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Friday evening.
