Cromer Palmer
POMARIA — Cromer Palmer, 84, of 4430 S.C. Highway 202, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late D. Shelton and Farrah Minor Palmer. He was a retired employee of Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant, and a plumber. He was a member of Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church and lived with Sammy and Rene Bouknight of Pomaria.
Survivors include a daughter, Sara P. Morse of Liberty; a son, Thomas W. Palmer of Statesville, N.C.; two sisters, Eleanor Metts and Sallie Rinehart, both of Saluda; a brother, David Palmer of Saluda; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. today in Travis Park Cemetery, Saluda.
Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge.

Marjorie Pruitt
WARE SHOALS — Marjorie Holloway Pruitt, 93, widow of Mark Albert Pruitt, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.
Born in Grantville, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willis Holloway. She was a retired receptionist at Ware Shoals Medical Clinic and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Mark H. Pruitt of Lake City, Fla., and Tom H. Pruitt of Columbia; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Wicker. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 1-2 Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Thornwell Children’s Home.
Parker-White Funeral Home is in charge.

Alberta Lever Pugh
SALUDA — Alberta Lever Pugh, 56, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Carrie Lever Graham. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Prosperity, and a caretaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Pugh of Perry and Geneva Quarles of Columbia; a brother, Huey Graham of Columbia; two sisters, Shiron Butler of Saluda and Linda Henderson of Newberry; and four grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Butler & Sons Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Willie C. Bryant.
Butler & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Frankye D. Sanders
LOWNDESVILLE — Frankye Duncan Sanders, 89, of 200 Main St., widow of Hoke Smith Sanders, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.
Born in Oglethorpe County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Charles Henry and Jane Plott Duncan. She worked as a dietician and substitute teacher at Lowndesville School for many years and was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Charles Sanders of Iva; a daughter, Jane Sanders of Lowndesville; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Smyrna United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Smith. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial is in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Crawford, Ga.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Calhoun Falls Funeral Home.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to Smyrna United Methodist Church.

Rosa Lee Shealy
NEWBERRY — Rosa Lee Boozer Shealy, 83, of 23 Glenn St., widow of Jesse Gordon Shealy, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at White Oak Manor.
Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Boozer and Agnes Mills Boozer Lake. She retired from Kendall Co. and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, J. Howard Shealy of West Columbia; a sister, Linda Griffith of Greenwood; a brother, Simon Wesley Boozer of Sylvania, Ga.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lynn Peters. Burial is in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Donnie Shealy, David Shealy, Darin Shealy, Michael Moates, Chris Clark and Luis Trinidad.
Visitation is from 7-8 p.m. tonight at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 2503 Bethel Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Joseph ‘Jake’ Tate
Joseph Donnell “Jake” Tate, 44, husband of Helen Ann Cummings Tate, of 611 Florida Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Hugh and Amanda Devlin Tate. He was a former construction worker with Satterfield Construction Company Inc. and a member of Milway Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Derrick Donnell Cummings of the home and Tony Antoine Cummings of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, Emmanuel Tate of Greenwood and Albert Horace Tate of Reidsville, N.C.; a sister, Brenda Tate Moss of Greenwood.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

Adella Bernhardt
MONETTA — Adella Risher Bernhardt, 85, widow of Hubert A. Bernhardt, of 203 Old Shoals Road, formerly of Greenwood, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center. The family is at the home. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Batesburg-Leesville, is in charge.

Charlie Brown
GREENWOOD - Charles Albert "Charlie" Brown, 70, resident of 512 Trestle Road, husband of Patty Bogardus Brown, died September 10, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Laurens County, April 8, 1932, he was a son of the late George Emmett and Tennie Morrow Brown. He was a graduate of Laurens High School and was a US Army Veteran where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Brown retired as manager of Sherwin-Williams Company, Greenwood store after 38 years service.
A member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and the Charles Poore Sunday School Class, he was also a member of the St. Mark United Methodist Men's Club. He was a member of the Greenwood Bass Masters Club and the Greenwood Civitan Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter Mrs. Greg (Ingram) Moon of Greenwood; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Kyle (Kendra) Lane of Mobile, AL; a stepson, Derek Strawhorn of Macon, GA; two sisters, Mrs. Thurmond (Ora) Finley of Laurens and Mrs. Charles (Lorene) Giles of Waterloo; a half-brother and his wife, Frank and Vernelle Brown of Asheville, NC; a half-sister, Margaret Klobas of Sebastopol, CA; a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Brown of Laurens; four grandchildren, Gregory Moon, Michael Brown, Hayden Lane and Jillian Lane.
Mr. Brown was prede-ceased by a son, Charles Albert Brown, Jr.; two brothers, Howard J. Brown and Pat Brown and a sister, Phyllis B. Sprouse.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Johnston officiating.
Burial will be in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery near Laurens.
Pallbearers will be Gary Roper, Tommy Burton, Roger Skeen, Dwight Dickey, Will Miller, Michael Brown and Gregory Moon.
Honorary escort will be members of the Charles Poore Sunday School Class and members of the St. Mark United Methodist Church Men's Club.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 AM Friday.
The family is at the home on Lake Greenwood and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 Thursday evening.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church Building Fund, 550 Hwy. 72 By-Pass NW, Greenwood, SC 29649.

Anthony Joseph Capici
HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Anthony Joseph Capici, 81, died Monday, September 9, at his home in Palmetto Dunes. He was born August 5, 1921, in Raritan, New Jersey. He was the son of Baldassare Capici and Anna Capici. Mr. Capici grew up in Summerville, NJ and joined the Army during WWII and served in Europe. Upon his return he moved to Greenwood, SC and married Kathryn Elizabeth Henderson.
He worked for the Greenwood Telephone Company from 1946 to 1973 and then moved to Hilton Head Island to become General Manager of Hargray Telephone Company. He served in that capacity for 15 years. Since 1988 he was responsible for Regulatory and External Affairs for Hargray and Bluffton Telephone Companies.
He was a member of the Board of Directors and President of SC Telephone Association and National Exchange Carrier Assoc.; President of SC Independent Pioneers; Commissioner and Past Chairman of the Broad Creek Public Service District.
He was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, SC and First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head; a member of the Board of Directors Hilton Head Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow and 41 years perfect attendance in Rotary).
His wife, Kathryn Henderson, predeceased him.
Mr. Capici is survived by a sister, Grace Chargois of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ronni Capici Wall and Weldon Wall of Ridgeland, SC and Kathryn Capici Porter and Philip Porter of Hilton Head; four grandchildren, Anthony and Anna Porter, Nicholas Wall, and Paige Wall Rose (married to Brian Rose).
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 13 at 3:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6113, South Carolina 29938.
The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Gaddis
DONALDS — Martha Elizabeth “Lida” Nickles Gaddis, 94, formerly of Donalds, widow of Walter Claude Gaddis, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Henry White Nickles and Elizabeth Bryson McCord Nickles. She was a member of Greenville Presbyterian Church in Donalds, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a former church treasurer. She received a bachelor’s degree from Due West Women’s College, now Erskine College, and a master’s in education from Peabody University, Nashville, Tenn. A retired public school teacher, she taught in the South Carolina and Georgia school systems.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence H. Nickles of Wesley Commons, Greenwood; a stepdaughter, Ouida G. Nickles of Donalds; and seven step-grandsons.
Services are at 11 Saturday at Greenville Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. George Wilson. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 10-11 Saturday at the church.
Family members are at their respective homes.

John Henry Hodges
ANDERSON — Services for John Henry Hodges are 2 p.m. Friday at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Splawn. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
Quiet hour is from 1-2 Friday.

Mary D. Lindsey, organizer of COOL
COKESBURY — Mary Downing Lindsey, 67, wife of Ralph K. Lindsey, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late James and Lessie Cromer Downing. She was educated in the public schools of Greenwood and Newberry counties. After graduating from Brewer High School in 1954, she attended South Carolina State University and received a bachelor of science degree in math in 1958. She also received a master’s degree in education from Clemson University in 1975. She taught for 30 years in Dillon, Abbeville and Greenwood counties, retiring in 1989. After retirement, she organized the “COOL” (Community Organization Outreach and Learning) program, which tutors children from kindergarten through 12th grades, and was a teacher at the Vocational Rehabilitation Center.
A member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church, she served as president of the Deaconess Board, a Sunday School teacher, vice president of the Usher Board and was immediate past president of the Little River Ushers. She was also a member of Harmony Chapter Order 282 of the Eastern Stars, Iota Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the NAACP.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Ralph K. Lindsey Jr. of San Francisco; a daughter, Madelyn E. Ford of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a niece reared in the home, Joyce J. Thomas of Landover, Md.; a sister, Ruth Norman of the home; a brother, James Earl Downing of Dallas, Texas ; and three grandchildren.
The family is at the home, 105 Virgin Drive, Hodges (Cokesbury Community).
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home, Greenwood.

George Weyraugh
McCORMICK — George Weyraugh, 82, of McCormick Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002.
Services will be announced by Tobias Funeral Home, Dayton, Ohio.
Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville, is in charge of local arrangements.

Virginia E. Whitt
GREENWOOD - Virginia Elizabeth Whitt, 80, of 107 Pineview Drive, went to be with her Lord on September 11, 2002. Born in Duncan Township, Greenville County on May 12, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Cooley Whitt and Viola Dickson Whitt. She was retired from Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant. She was a member of New Market Baptist Church and the Lucille Moore Sunday School Class.
She is survived by a sister, Martha Jean Shirley of Greenwood, brother, John C. Whitt and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bramlett and Nellie Whitt and Roy and Mary Whitt, all of Greenwood.
She is also survived and loved by nieces and nephews to whom she acted as surrogate mother and grandmother: Pat Riggins, Joe Whitt, Donna Jennings, Peggy DeLoach, Cheryl Kinard, John Whitt, Nancy Parlier, Joyce Gambrell, Kathy Manche, Missy Whitt, Gloria Whitt and Chip Whitt. Also surviving are 29 great nieces and nephews and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. She was "Ninni" to all.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Wiles officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joe Whitt, Chip Whitt, Donnie Riggins, Jeff Riggins, Matt DeLoach and Calvin Jennings.
Honorary escort will be members of the Lucille Moore Sunday School Class of New Market Baptist Church and residents of The Hampton House.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
The family is at the home of Roy and Mary Whitt, 304 Hillcrest Drive.
