Lucile W. Wilhite
CALHOUN FALLS — Lucile Wright Wilhite, 96, of 346 E. Savannah St., widow of B.F. Wilhite Jr., died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at Abbeville Nursing Home.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late John and Nannie Ellis Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne W. Whitten of Calhoun Falls; two sisters, Eva Anderson of Shoals Junction and Jewel Pettigrew of Mount Carmel; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Steve Rice and Jack Ray. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Pallbearers are Bob Pettigrew, George Broadwell, Billy Frank Willis, Gene Hancock, Ray Anderson and Johnny Hancock.
Visitation is from 2-3 Sunday at the church.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church.
Calhoun Falls Funeral Home is in charge.

Bessie Carter
NINETY SIX — Bessie Price “Bubber” Carter, 92, resident of 1614 Carter Road, widow of Johnny P. Carter died September 14, 2002, at the Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Hartsville August 8, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Edward J. and Lula Martin Price.
A member of Temple Baptist Church and the T E L Sunday School Class, she was also a member of the Morning Prayer Group of the church.
Mrs. Carter was predeceased by a daughter, Mable Carter and five brothers, Tom, Edd, Cannon, Charles and Wilton Price.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Donna Stephenson Carter of Ninety Six. Four grandsons, Stephen and wife Donna Carter, Gene Carter, Bill and wife Stephanie Carter and Darren Carter. Three great grandchildren, Brittany, John and Haylea Carter.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 Tuesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with Rev. Charles Owens officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sterling Jones, Randy Stephenson, Charles Price, Tommy Price, Bobby Brown and Warren Reynolds.
Honorary escort will be members of the T E L Sunday School Class of Temple Baptist Church and nephews along with Thomas Crawford, Temple Lamar, Joe Brehmer, Roy Horne, Johnny B. Horne and Hiram Mitchell.
The family is at the home of Eddie and Donna Carter, 1604 Carter Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Monday evening.
Memorial may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.

Barbara Davenport
WARE SHOALS — A. Barbara Revukas Davenport, 90, formerly of Aulla Road, widow of James Everett Davenport, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Laurelwood Care Center in Elkton, Md.
The body is being returned to Greenwood, and services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

James Turnage
McCORMICK — James Turnage, 59, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick, he was a son of Marie Smith Turnage and the late James Ralley Turnage.
He was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a volunteer driver for McCormick Department of Social Services.
Survivors include his mother of McCormick; a son, Richard Turnage of Greenwood; a daughter, Renee T. David of Plum Branch; a sister, Rose T. Smith of Anderson; a stepsister, Martha Ann Turnage of Anderson; and a grandchild.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Troy Cemetery.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of his mother.
Strom Funeral Home is in charge.

Edward ‘Bro.’ Zimmerman
McCORMICK — Edward “Bro.” Zimmerman, 66, of No. 12 Cherry Valley Apartments, husband of Idella Zimmerman, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at his home.
The family is at the home of Hattie Bell Gilchrist, Pine Grove Church Road, Plum Branch.
Services will be announced by McCormick Memorial Chapel.

Ohna Bifolchi
Ohna Low Davis Bifolchi, 82, of 2220 Montague Ave. Extension, Lot 54, widow of Henry Bifolchi, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 at her home.
Born in Doddrage County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Lerehemus and Talitha Ford Davis. She was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Salem, W.Va. She was twice married, first to the late Chester Fisher.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Walter (Zara Jane) Morris of Greenwood; a son, Chester Fisher of Houston; a sister, Mary Garell of Clarksburg, W.Va.; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Services are 5 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe Chapman. The body will be placed in the church at 4. Burial is in the KFP Cemetery, Salem, W.Va.
Visitation is at the church after the services.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.

Barbara Davenport
WARE SHOALS — Barbara Revukas Davenport, 90, formerly of Oulla Road, widow of James Everett Davenport, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at Laurelwood Care Center in Elkton, Md.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late John A. and Elizabeth Karieva Revukas. She retired from Fashion Fads in Ware Shoals and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood.
Formerly of Ware Shoals, she had lived in North East, Md., since 1994.
Survivors include a son, James E. Davenport Jr. of North East; a daughter, Elizabeth Taylor of Dallas; 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial is at noon Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, conducted by Father Richard Harris. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is from 6-7 Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 110 E. Laurel Ave., Greenwood, SC 29649. Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, is in charge.

Mary B. Jackson
HODGES — Mary B. Jackson, 85, of 520 Nation Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at her home.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jackson, 106 Bell Road, Donalds.
Services will be announced by Robinson-Walker Funeral Service, Ware Shoals.

Larry W. Maxwell
WARE SHOALS — Larry W. Maxwell, 63, of 52 Dairy St., husband of Bonnie E. Maxwell, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002.
Services will be announced by Parker-White Funeral Home.

John B. Rhodes
TROY — John B. Rhodes, 74, of 1224 Bethel Road, husband of Diana Nichols Rhodes, died Sunday, September 15, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mineral Wells, TX, he was a son of the late Jack Rhodes and Lena Rhodes Pierce and stepson of the late Levy Pierce. He graduated from School of the Ozarks and attended the University of Missouri, majoring in animal husbandry. He managed Dennybrook Farms, St. Louis, MO; Marbin Farms in Covington, GA and retired in 1975 as dairy manager on E. P. Gulledge farm in Greenwood County. He then managed his own farm in the Callison community. In 1999, he was named Agriculturist of the Year by the Rotary Club of Greenwood.
He was a US Marine veteran of World War II and served in the US Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Bold Springs Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, taught the Men's Bible Class and was Followup Director of Challenge to Build, the church's building fund.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Rhodes.
Surviving is his wife, Diana; a son, John Steven Rhodes of Ninety Six; three daughters, Ginger Rhodes of Cincinnati, OH, Mary R. White and her husband, George, of Bonneau, SC, and Julia R. Gilchrist, and her husband, Richard, of Hodges; three sisters, Mary R. Hunt of Harrison, AR, Ann R. Prowse of Cookeville, TN and Margaret R. Bateman of Jacksonville, TX; three brothers, Jack Rhodes of Harrison, AR, Don "Dusty" Rhodes of Victorville, CA and William J. Rhodes of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Christina L. White of Greenwood, John B. White of Bonneau, SC, Ruairi K. Rhodes of Cincinnati, OH and Nicholas C. Gilchrist of Hodges; eight step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Bold Springs Baptist Church on Thursday from 1 to 3 pm. Services will be at 3 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Chris Garrison, the Rev. Archie Evans and the Rev. David Evans officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Cook, Danny Harvley, Ben Scurry, Andrew Cook, Eshane Cooley, Tommy Sullivan and Travis Stevens.
Honorary escort will be members of the Men's Bible Class of Bold Springs Baptist Church.
The family is at the home.
The family respectfully request that flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Challenge to Build Fund of Bold Springs Baptist Church, 1321 Reedy Creek Road, Bradley, SC 29819.

Ruby Pompey Sullivan
Services for Ruby Pompey Sullivan, formerly of 207 Arabian Road, Greenwood, are 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Adams, assisted by the Revs. Lohona Mosley, Eric Morton, George Hill, Claude Tolbert and Norris Turner. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church trustees.
Flower bearers are church deaconesses and trustee wives.
Honorary escorts are members of the Women’s Aide Society No. 87 and Club of Wisdom and church deacons.
Visitation is at the home of a nephew, Pierce Sullivan, 102 Welborn Land, Callison Estates, Greenwood.
Parks Funeral Home is in charge.

Allonia H. Tompkins
DETROIT — Allonia H. Tompkins, 53, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at a Detroit hospital.
She was a daughter of the late George and Viola M. Holloway.
Survivors include two children, Alvinia Tompkins and Joseph Tompkins, both of Detroit; seven sisters, Gladys Patrick, Etruelia Traylor Christmas and Judy Holloway, all of Detroit, Anna Louise Franklin of Pittsburgh, Lois Bennett and Nellie Burwell, both of Washington , D.C., and Flora Liddell of McCormick, S.C.; five brothers, George Holloway Jr. of McCormick, the Rev. Harry Holloway Sr. of Pittsburgh, Carl Perrin and Charles Perrin, both of Detroit and Kelly Perrin of Lincolnton, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a brother, George Holloway Jr., Mims Drive, McCormick.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home, McCormick.

J.A. ‘Jake’ Walker
SENTINEL, Okla. — J.A. “Jake” Walker, 83, husband of Una Carter Walker, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at Elkview General Hospital in Hobart.
Born in House, N.M., he was a son of the late Arthur E. and Edna Johnston Walker. He moved from Portales, N.M., to Sentinel in 1944, retired from the U.S. Postal Service and owned and operated Walker Supply Co. He had served as mayor of Sentinel, a volunteer fireman and tag agent and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. A member and elder of Northeast Church of Christ, he had also served as deacon and church treasurer for many years. He was first married to the late Rachel McClary Walker.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Walt (Helen) Pruitt of Ninety Six, S.C., and Mrs. Dave (Katherine) Mowry of Bella Vista, Ark.; a brother, Melvin Walker of San Angelo, Texas ; a sister, Viola W. Morris of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Northeast Church of Christ, with James Cudd officiating. Burial was in Sentinel Cemetery.
McClure Funeral Home was in charge.

Sheldon Culbertson
Sheldon Wyatt Culbertson, 27, of 6737 Peter Pan Place, Jacksonville, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002 in Atlantic City, N.J., from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home.

Maggie ‘Bay Wee’ Gunter
McCORMICK — Maggie Chamberlain “Bay Wee” Gunter, 74, widow of William Gunter, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Hill Chamberlain. She was a member of Cedar Spring Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. James (Sadie) Fuller of Edgefield and Mrs. Robert (Varrie) Haskell of Augusta, Ga.; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Felix (Jacqueline) S. Alfred of Atlanta; four sons, William Gunter Jr., George Gunter and Ryan Gunter, all of Atlanta and Tracy Gunter of Calhoun Falls; a niece and a nephew reared in the home, Barbara Sibert of McCormick and Robert Cartledge of Chicago; a brother, Floyd Chamberlain of Chicago; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Sadie Fuller, 316 Highway 378 E., Edgefield County.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home.
