Betty Hall
HONEA PATH — Betty Ashley Hall, 52, of 114 Shirmadon Drive, widow of Basil Frank Hall Jr., died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at her home.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of Margie Marie Ashley and the late William Henry Ashley Sr. She was an employee of Anderson Oconee Speech and Hearing and a member of Southside Baptist Church. A church organist at Southside and surrounding churches for 37 years, she was also a volunteer with United Way and with Health Fairs at the speech and hearing clinics.
Survivors include a her mother of Donalds; a daughter, Mrs. Ken (Julie) Rauton of Abbeville; three brothers, Rex Ashley, Boyce Ashley and William H. Ashley Jr., all of Donalds; a sister, Ouita Todd of Anderson; and a grandson.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Dean Webb and Jimmy Smith. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Keowee Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at Pruitt Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Anderson Oconee Speech and Hearing Clinic, Anderson, SC.
The family is at the home of her mother, 591 Drake Road, Donalds.

Joyce B. Moreland
NINETY SIX — Joyce Brown Moreland, 67, of 204 Park Street, died Monday, September 23, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Union, she was a daughter of the late Stokie Lee and Willie "Nana" Greer Brown. She retired from First Union Corporation as a branch manager and head teller. She served as president of the Ninety Six/Greenwood Chapter of the American Council of the Blind of SC and as president of the Ninety Six Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Nana Brown Sunday School Class, taught the Youth Group and had served as secretary and treasurer of the church.
Surviving is a son, Keith Moreland of Waterloo; a special daughter, Lavenia T. Young of Greenwood; and a grandson, Kevin Scott Moreland of Tifton, GA.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. Chuck Sprouse officiating.
Burial will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Honorary escort will be members of the Nana Brown Sunday School Class of Temple Baptist Church. The family is at the home of her son, Keith Moreland, 29 Crappie Drive, Waterloo.
Memorials may be made to the American Council of the Blind of SC, 1822 Burnham Street, West Columbia SC 29169.

Peggy Maria Pollard
Peggy Maria Pollard, 43, of 110 Woodlawn Road, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at her home. Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of Emma T. Lowe and the late Jack S. Lowe.
Survivors include her mother, with whom she lived; three daughters, Christy Downey of Hopkinsville, Ky., Michelle Bowie of Calhoun Falls and Tracy Blackmon of Waterloo; two sisters, Pam Kidd and Patsy Holladay; and nine grandchildren.
Her body was donated to the University of South Carolina, for cancer research.
A private memorial service will be conducted for the immediate family.
Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1741, Greenwood, SC 29648.

Dennis Williams
NINETY SIX — Services for Dennis Williams, of 103 Edgewood St., are 3 p.m.
Thursday at Robinson & Son Mortuary, Greenwood, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Parkman. Burial is in Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Flower bearers are nieces.
Visitation is from 7-8 Wednesday at the home.

Eric Armitage
Eric Armitage, 84, widower of Lilian Heppenstall Armitage, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
Born in Yorkshire, England, he was a son of the late Norman and Hannah Pyke Armitage. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. He was twice married, first to the late Nora Catherine French Armitage. Survivors include two daughters, Diane Lawson of Cross Hill and Jean Benning of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services for Mr. Armitage and his wife, Lillian, who died Sept. 24, 2002, are 10 a.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Diane Lawson, 75 Kruger Drive, Cross Hill.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC, 29646.

Virginia P. Bruce
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Virginia Pitts Bruce, 86, widow of Edwin G. Bruce Jr., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.
A native of the Poplar Springs Community of Ware Shoals, S.C., she was a member of the Independent Presbyterian Church for 57 years and the Red Cross during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Edwin G. Bruce III of California; a daughter, Mrs. Lester H. (Linda Bruce) Buryn of Leeds; a sister, Eloise Pitts of South Carolina; and a grandson.
Services are 3 p.m. Friday in Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, conducted by the Rev. Cary Speaker.
Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Kirkwood by the River Chapel, Birmingham.
There will be no visitation.

Minnie Butler-Abney
PASADENA, Calif. — Minnie Lee Erving Butler-Abney, 96, formerly of Saluda, S.C., died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 in Pasadena.
Born in Ridge Spring, S.C., she was a daughter of the late David and Sallie Mae Williams Erving. She was a member of Mount Enon Baptist Church, the Satterwhite-Brown Order of the Eastern Star and the Women Home Aide Society. She attended Bettis Academy, Trenton, S.C., and graduated from Allen University. A former school teacher and seamstress, she was twice married, first to the late Fred Butler and second to the late Mingo Abney.
Survivors include two daughters, Vernelle B. Chapman of Pasadena and Mrs. Otis (Laveda B.) Brayboy of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Bennie Warren Butler, Robert Douglas Butler and Henry C. Butler, all of Saluda; two stepdaughters, Alberta Mobley of Waterbury, Conn., and Lorraine Martin of Columbia; an adopted daughter, Rosa Lee Mims of Washington , D.C.; a sister, the Rev. Joyce T. Taylor of Chicago; 26 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Enon Baptist Church, Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Kenner, assisted by the Revs. Johnny C. Gantt and Raymond Adams. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Flower bearers are the missionaries.
The family is at the home of a son, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Warren Butler, 341 N. Bouknight Ferry Road and at the home of a brother-in-law, Robert Butler, 305 N. Bouknight Ferry Road, both in Saluda.

Walter L. Hawkins Jr. 7
HODGES — Walter Lee Hawkins Jr., 31, of 921 Gary Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002 at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of Walter Hawkins Sr. and Annie Bell Holloway Hawkins. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, a 1981 graduate of Greenwood High School and a cosmetologist at Precious One Beauty Salon.
Survivors include his parents of the home; a daughter, Valeasa Hawkins of the home; and a sister, Joann Vera Hawkins of the home.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Marshall Haynes
Services for Marshall Haynes, of Cambridge Apartments, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Willie S. Harrison. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Augustus Covington, Harry Rice, Ronald Smith, Donald Smith, James O. Williams and James G. Williams.
Flower bearers are Alberta Brown, Ruby Bailey, Kim Burton, Jennifer Puckett, Van Frazier and Ella Evans.
Visitation is from 6-8 Friday at Macedonia Community Center.
The family is at the home of a sister, Elizabeth Davis, 421 Bintage Road.

Deborah C. Spencer
TAMPA, Fla. — Deborah C. Spencer, wife of John Henry Spencer, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at Tampa General Hospital.
Born in Sylvester, Ga., she moved to Tampa and attended the public schools of Hillsboro County. She continued her education at Tampa Business School and was an assistance director at the Tampa Housing Authority. She was a member of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Trina Williams and Joyce Darnell; and three brothers, Earl Chambers, Karl Chambers and Michael Davis.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 2204 N. Highland Ave.

Lewis S. Howe III
GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Lewis Stillman Howe III, 42, husband of Tammy Archambault Howe, of 209 Courtney Road, formerly of the Greenwood, S.C. area, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home.

Alexander Laster
ABBEVILLE — Alexander Laster, 47, of 380 Hodges Road, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of Lue Gene Laster and the late John Allen Laster. He was a retired textile employee and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and The Sons of Aide.
Survivors include his mother of the home; a daughter, Faith Williams of Greenville; two brothers, John A. Laster Jr. of Abbeville and Robert Allen Laster of New Jersey; a sister, Elizabeth Williams of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

Dale J. Sibert
McCORMICK — Dale Jerome Sibert, 48, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at his home.
Born in McCormick, he was a son of the late Hubert and Melba Brown Sibert. A member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church, he attended McCormick public schools and was a retired construction worker.
Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Wakefield of Plum Branch; two sisters, Mildred Sibert of McCormick and Mrs. David (Gwendolyn) Hackett of Abbeville; three brothers, Harvey Sibert, Curtis Sibert and Bobby Sibert, all of McCormick; and two grandchildren.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Carey Grady, pastor. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Rodney Sibert, Kennya Sibert, Jeff Sibert, Ricky Sibert, Thomas Calhoun and David Hackett Jr. Flower bearers are nieces.
The family is at the home, No. 3, Cherry Valley Apartments.

Irene Strother
ATLANTA — Irene “Peggy” Postell Strother, 63, of 1965 Roger Ave. S.W., formerly of Calhoun Falls, S.C., widow of George Strother, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Born in Calhoun Falls, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Sallie McIntosh Postell. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Church of God Holiness.
Survivors include five sisters, Alice Mae Roundtree of Calhoun Falls, Mrs. Albert (Cleo) Jackson and Mrs. Earl (Mary) Farmer, both of Philadelphia, Mrs. Linton (Dorothy) Reed and Mrs. Ellis (Martha) Walker, both of Atlanta; two brothers, Earl Allen Postell of Loganville, Ga., and Broydied Postell of North Carolina; and a nephew reared in the home, John A. Jackson of Atlanta.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Church of God Holiness, Calhoun Falls, conducted by Elder Willie Morton. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Visitation is today at Friendly Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Alice Mae Roundtree, Seneca Street, Calhoun Falls.
