James V. Mannion, Jr.
GREENWOOD — James V. Mannion, Jr., 74, of 1110 Marshall Road, husband of Louise Kirk Mannion, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Self Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Mannion was born in Mt. Carmel, PA, son of the late James V. Sr. and Victoria Stankevich Mannion. He was a retired electrical engineer from the Philadelphia Electric Company where he was manager of transmission and distribution. Mr. Mannion was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Seneca and Greenwood, the Carol Barner Sunday School Class, the Salem Lions Club and the Keowee Computer Club. Mr. Mannion was a U.S. Army veteran, a graduate of Drexel University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1952 and had attended Cornell University.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons: James David Mannion of Assonet, MA, and Thomas Nelson Mannion of Pasadena, CA, two daughters: Linda Sheffer of Lima, PA and Carole Wilson of Newtown Square, PA; one sister: Catherine Gutowski of Newtown Square, PA, and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Mannion was predeceased by one sister: Mary Lou Babin.
Memorial services will be held at 2PM Friday at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Seneca. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
A memorial service will also be held on Saturday at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of St. Mark United Methodist Church, 550 Highway 72 NW, Greenwood, SC 29649-1255.
Seneca Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Kate Neal
HODGES — Annie Kate Neal, 60, of 1112 Gary Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 in Greenwood County.
Born in Callison, she was a daughter of Melvin and Rosa Carter Lagroon. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church and the Women’s Aid Society No. 98 and was employed by Lander University.
Survivors include her common-law husband, James E. “Booty” Harling of the home; three sons, James Bruce Harling of Greenwood, Vernon Barry Harling and Jeffrey Harling of Hodges; a daughter, Jessie Lagroon; and seven grandchildren, two of the home, Felecia and James Lagroon.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Virginia Riddle
Virginia Fisher Riddle, 77, of 1910 McCormick Highway, widow of Thomas L. Riddle, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at Wesley Commons.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late James Wiston and Lillie May Adams Fisher. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and received her nursing degree from Piedmont Technical College. Retiring from Self Memorial Hospital, she was later employed by The Methodist Home (now Wesley Commons). She was a member of White Hall Church of God, where she was a teacher in the Sunday School Department.
Survivors include three brothers, Robert G. “Bobby” Fisher of Hodges, Allen F. Fisher of Mount Mill and John E. Fisher of Nanjemoy, Md.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Matthew J. Bixby and E.F. Thrasher. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Lynn Fisher, Gary Fisher, Steve Fisher, Robert Fisher Jr., Donald Ouzts and David “Buddy” Burdette.
Honorary escorts the men of White Hall Church of God, along with Joe Thompson, Bud Billings, Stan Hammond, Otis Duncan, Frank Roberts, Donald Vanderford, Lee Wideman and B.W. Turner.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Bobby and Dorcas Fisher, 309 E. Keels Road.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.

Jimmy Young
GREENWOOD — James William “Jimmy” Young, 84, resident of 204 Heritage West Court, husband of Thelma Ashley Crawford Young, died November 20, 2002 at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, February 9, 1918, he was a son of the late Robert Furman and Lucille Martin Young. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII, serving as a Staff Sargent in the European Theatre and the D-Day Invasion of Omaha Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.
Mr. Young retired from Holiday Inns, Inc. after 18 years service and was part time associated with Blyth Funeral Home for 40 years.
He was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church, having served on the Counting Committee for over 35 years. He was also a life member of Bascomb Masonic Lodge #363.
Mr. Young was twice married, first to the late Caroline Johnson Young and was also predeceased by a son, Dell Young.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Jimmie Ann and husband, Mike Davis of Peachtree City, GA; two step-daughters, Nancy O’Dell of Ware Shoals and Rebecca Pritchard of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Inez Y. Davis of Hodges and a brother, Roy Furman Young of Aiken; a grandson, Michael and wife, Autumn Davis; a granddaughter, Gala and husband, Ernie Johnson; a great-grandson, Braeden Davis; five step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3PM Thursday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ryan Eklund, Rev. David W. Patterson and Rev. Dan Compton officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family is at the home on Heritage West Court and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 3:00 Thursday afternoon.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Ada Bell Brooks
Ada Bell Stewart Brooks, 90, of 103 Old Ninety Six Highway, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Garfield Stewart and Mamie Crawford Stewart.
She was a member of Marshall Chapel Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Society. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star No. 418.
Survivors include five sons, John Brooks, Bobby Joe Brooks, Clevland Brooks, Charlie Brooks and the Rev. Roosevelt Brooks, all of Greenwood; four daughters, Mamie Duncan of the home, Georgia Louden of Ninety Six, Hazel Pickney and Loretta Kemp of Greenwood; 25 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home Inc.

Dorothy Hughey
ATLANTA — Dorothy Hughey, 48, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of Mack Burton of Abbeville, S.C., and the late Daisy Mae Hughey Burton.
Survivors include her father of Abbeville; two sisters, Mary Lee Burton of Atlanta and Inez Burton of Anderson, S.C.; and a brother, Rick London of Atlanta.
Services are at 3 Saturday at Abbeville and White Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Mary J. Paul.
Burial is in Harbison Cemetery.
Visitation is from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Eugene Brownlee Memorial Chapel, Abbeville.
The family is at the home of an aunt, Mamie London, 109 Virginia Drive, Abbeville.
Abbeville and White Mortuary is in charge.

Leroy Lindsey Jr.
Leroy Lindsey Jr., of 720 Grendel Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Leroy Lindsey Sr. and Willie Lee Lindsey. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert Lindsey of Greenwood and Johnny Lindsey of Cleveland, Ohio; and two sisters, Dorothy Lindsey of Plainsfield, N.J., and Maybelle Works of McCormick.
Services are at 11 Saturday at Parks Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James McKee. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
The family is at the home.

William C. Metts
McCORMICK — Mr. William C. Metts, 81, husband of Ruth H. Metts, died November 21, 2002, at his residence.
Born in Cottageville, he was a son of the late John T. and Nellie Metts. He was a graduate of Clemson University and received his Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. He retired as director of education at John de la Howe School and was a US Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving on the Guada Canal.
Mr. Metts was a member of McCormick United Methodist Church, where he served on the Official Board. He was also a member of the McCormick Town Planning Commission; The American Legion; the VFW; Council on Aging; and the South Carolina State Employee’s Association, where in 1998 he received the award of Outstanding State Retiree of the Year. He was a mason and a Hejaz Shriner.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lee Metts Brown.
Surviving is his wife of the home; two daughters, Sandra Scott and Cathey Cann, both of Clemmons, NC; a son, Buddy Metts of Rock Hill; two sisters, Myrtle Missel and Ruth Thompson, both of Cottageville; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Memory Gardens, York, SC with the Rev. Donald Clendaniel officiating.
The family will receive friends in the McCormick United Methodist Church Sanctuary on Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The family is at the home.

HODGES — Services for Annie Kate Neal of 1112 Gary Road, are at 2 Saturday at Flint Hill Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John R. Brightharp, assisted by the Revs. William Booker Sr., Willie Evans and Marion Harling. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are Marvin Cunningham, Danny Williams, Jerry Wayne Williams, Willie Moss, John Moss, Jerry Smith, James Moss and Howard Washington .
Flower bearers are Bonita Rayford, Linda Jackson, Doris Williams, Helen Williams, Aretha Harling, Nichole Harling, Josie Brown, Anna Ross and Sheneka Kinard.
Honorary escorts are the Brewer Class of 1962, Aramark Corporation-The Dining Hall, and Lander University Staff.
The family is at the home, and the home of her parents, Melvin and Rosa Lagroon, 2507 Callison Highway, Callison Community.

Penny Tucker
ABBEVILLE — James Marion “Penny” Tucker, 77 of 801 Brooks Street, husband of Lenora Sorrow Tucker, died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at his home.
Born in Anderson county January 31, 1925, he was a son of the late Guy and Eunice Simpson Tucker. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Due West and was retired after 42 years from Milliken.
Surviving are his wife of the home, three daughters, Frances Jean Tucker and Glenda T. McPhail both of Abbeville and Patricia T. Thomas of Gadston, Alabama; one son, Rev. Jimmy Tucker of Greenwood; one sister, Frances Wilson of Greenville; eight grandchildren, James McPhail, Laura McPhail, Jennifer McDonald, Stephanie Ison, Melanie Thomas, Michael Thomas, Jessica Thomas and Katie Tucker. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Gail Tucker and by a brother, William Tucker.
Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Saturday from the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The body is at Harris Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from noon till 1:30 P.M. Saturday. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 4226 Hwy. 184 West, Due West, SC 29639. The family is at the home.

Lewis ‘Chief’ Wardlaw
Lewis “Chief” Wardlaw, of 513 Taggart Ave., widow of Inez Seigler Wardlaw, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Willie and Mary Wardlaw. He was retired from Wilson Brothers Sand Company.
Survivors include four daughters, Effie Lee Turner of Atlanta, Theresa Seigler, Angela Seigler and Lillian I. Washington , all of Greenwood; four sons, Willie Seigler, Lloyd Seigler and Clarence Seigler, all of Greenwood, and Ben Seigler of Virginia Beach; a sister, Clara Jackson of Honea Path; 15 grandchildren, two of which were reared in the home, Steven and Quintrel Seigler; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Saturday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Cross Hill, conducted by Bishop Emanuel Spearman, assisted by the Revs. Fannie L. Clark, Thomas E. Duncan, John Parks, Camilla C. Simpkins, Rufus and Georgia East. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Flower bearers are friends of the family.
The family is at the home, and at the home of the Rev. Lillian O. Washington , 1300 W. Alexander Road, Greenwood.
Parks Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary White
CALHOUN FALLS — Mary Hunter White, 84, formerly of 293 Old Calhoun Falls Road, Abbeville, widow of Ben White, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late Frank F. and Molly Pedigree Hunter. She was a retired inspector with the Abbeville Shirt Plant and a member of Westside Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary E. Hurt of McCormick; a son, James F. White of Abbeville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Services are at 2 Saturday at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home. Burial is in Long Cane Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6-7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
The families are at their respective homes.
