‘Joe’ Whittle Jr.
EDGEFIELD — Joseph Buster “Joe” Whittle Jr., 59, of Highway 378 East, husband of Sharon Logue Whittle, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at his home.
A native of Lexington County, he served on the Batesburg Police Department for five years, and retired from the Batesburg Fire Department after 20 years of service. He was a truck driver for Comcar Industries in Auburndale, Fla., and was a member of Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Karen Whittle of Leesville, Robin Whittle of Albany, Ga., and Brandi Whittle of Edgefield; a sister, Merline Black of Apple Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were at 3 Sunday, Nov. 17 at Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church Christian Activity Building Fund, 1194 Meeting Street Road, Edgefield, S.C., 29824.

Donald Briggs
GREENWOOD — Donald Lee Briggs, 45, of 548 Davis Street, husband of Brenda Waldrop Briggs, died Saturday, November 23, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Homer Garrett and Gladys Marler Briggs. He was retired from Greenwood Mills, Plant #5.
Surviving is his wife of Greenwood; a son, Eric Briggs of Greenwood; a sister, Nancy Briggs Essarabi of Alexandria, VA; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John G. Hipp and the Rev. Reuel Westbrook officiating.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Simmons, Roger Waldrop, Wayne Dixon, Earl Quarles, Tony Fallaw and Tommy Clem.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Beatrice L. Covin
ABBEVILLE — Services for Beatrice Lucille Covin are 4 p.m. Wednesday at Long Cane A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Revs. A.R. Kollock Sr. and J.J. Robinson. The body will be placed in the church at 3. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church officers.
Flower bearers are missionary society members.
The family is at the home of her mother, Mamie C. Kennedy, 1208 Secession Ave.

Eartha L. DeVore
BATESBURG — Eartha L. DeVore died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002 in Batesburg.
Born in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Pauline Badger. She was employed with Carolina Culinary of West Columbia.
Survivors include seven children, Barbara Adams and Alma Brown of Batesburg; Schenley DeVore of Monetta, Janie D. Bryant of Greenwood, Minnie Johnson and LeVern Cannon of Columbia and Brenda Raiford of Ridge Spring; a sister, Valeria Raysor of Columbia; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday at Chinquapin Baptist Church.
Amos & Sons Funeral Home was in charge.

Harriett Dunlap
McCORMICK — Harriett Ethel Dunlap, 86, of Route 1, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 at Anne Maria Nursing Home, North Augusta.
Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late John F. and Pamelia Clark Dunlap. She was a member of Troy United Methodist Church and the Maggie Talbert Sunday School Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. J.T. (Dorothy) Dillashaw of Bradley; three sisters, Mrs. James A. (Winifred) Henderson of Columbia, Mrs. Raymond (Guynell) Henderson of McCormick and Lucille Turman of Abbeville; two brothers, Ronnie C. Dunlap and Raymond A. Dunlap, both of McCormick.
Services are 4 p.m. today at Troy United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. George Boyd officiating. Burial is in Troy Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Marion Henderson, John Henderson, Curtis Dillashaw, Clyde Dillashaw, Roger Dillashaw, Curtis Walker, S.J. Russell Jr. and Frank W. White.
Honorary escorts are members of the Men’s Bible Class and the Maggie Talbert Sunday School Class of the church.
Visitation is 2:30-3:30 today at the church.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Dillashaw, 1714 Five Notch Road, Bradley.

Robert Latham
Robert A. Latham, 68, of 118 Windsor Oak Court, husband of Sue Smith Latham, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was son of the late Olin and Sallie Graham Latham. He was a graduate of Ninety Six High School and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Greenwood Mills Information Center as a systems analyst. A member and former deacon of Abney Memorial Baptist Church, he was also a member and former teacher of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He was twice married, first to the late Martha Ann Attaway Latham.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Rhonda L. Dye of Abbeville; a son, Thomas M. Smith of Austin, Texas ; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Stephen Owens and Wayne Wiggins. Entombment is in Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.
Pallbearers are the active deacons of Abney Memorial Baptist Church.
Honorary escorts are members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of the church, along with Stan Bell and Joe Davis.
Visitation is 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Benjamin C. Shirley
SENECA — Benjamin Clyde Shirley, 91, formerly of Tokeena Road, widower of Gladys Adams Shirley, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 at National Health Care in Greenwood.
Born in Oconee County, he was a son of the late Lewis Martin and Leah Huff Shirley. He was a retired farmer and a member of Earles Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mildred S. Cole of Seneca and Willie Fay Shirley of Westminster; and two brothers, Roger M. Shirley of Seneca and Lewis H. Shirley of Westminster.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Earles Grove Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 1-2 today at the church.
Family members are at their respective homes.

Shirley Wells
DONALDS — Shirley Tench Wells, 69, of 256 Honicutt Road, wife of James Dean, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Ollie Mae Taylor Tench. She was a former employee of Riegel Textile Corp. and retired from Belton Industries. She attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, H. Keith Wells of Colonial Heights, Va.; a daughter, Sheila Dianne W. Calvert of Ware Shoals; five sisters, Dot McElhannon of Simpsonville, Billie Elmore of Laurens, Freda Weathers of Whitmire, Betty Strickland of Spring Lake, N.C., and Callie Young of Baltimore; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. John Phillips and Mac McElhannon.
Pallbearers are Gene McAllister, Ricky Johnson, William Bates, Paul Calvert, Patrick Griswold, Don McElhannon and Jimmy Varnum.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Tommy and Sheila Calvert, 3 Stadium Drive, Ware Shoals.

ABBEVILLE — Services for Rosannah Lyons Wright are noon Wednesday at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, McCormick, conducted by the Revs. Isaac Booker III, James Thompson, Larry Nelson and R.C.K. Hardness. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Flower bearers are the Order of the Eastern Star members.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Willie M. Wright, 101 Virginia Drive.

Naomi Burroughs
NINETY SIX — Naomi Wooten Burroughs, 75, of 221 Saluda Street, widow of Paul Burroughs, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002.
Born in Gainesville, GA, she was a daughter of the late Howard Cobb and Willie Mae Hubbards Wooten. She retired from Greenwood Mills, Sloan Plant and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, Luther Howard Wooten.
Survivors include beloved friends, J. B. and Lillian McDaniel, who had cared for her in their home at 226 Lowell Street, Ninety Six; Mary Farris of McCormick and Marion Ruff of Greenwood.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Reid and Mr. Dwayne Moore officiating. Burial will be on Friday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Honorary escort will be the staff of the Star Fort National Historic Site and Greenwood State Park and members of the Sunshine Band along with Allen Epps, Billy McDaniel, Russ Farris, Tony Dorn, Bubba Dorn, Bobby Branch, Herbert McCoy, Clyde Adams, Preston Rogers, Walter Leopard, Dr. O. M. Cobb, Johnny McDaniel, Wilbur McCoy, Lee McDowell, Bobby Motte, Ricky Turner, Randy McFarland and Carl Riley.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m.
The family is at the home of Mr. & Mrs. J. B. McDaniel, 226 Lowell Street, Ninety Six.

Mildred Bolton Craig, 101, of 201 Overland Drive, widow of Joshua Mills Craig, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002 at Wesley Commons.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

J. Howard Drake
WARE SHOALS — James Howard “Slick” Drake, 85, husband of Margaret Dunn Drake of 45 Smith St., died Monday at Self Regional Healthcare. He was born January 2, 1917 at Shoals Junction in Greenwood County, a son of the late James Will Drake and the late Ida McClain Drake Murff.
Mr. Drake was a member of The First Baptist Church where he had served as deacon and as chairman of that board, Sunday School teacher, choir member and officer of Baptist Training Union.
Mr. Drake began his military career as an enlisted man with the Thirtieth Division in which he earned a battlefield commission on March 24, 1945. He participated in five campaigns with this division earning the Bronze Star medal. He was released from Federal service as a first lieutenant, Infantry on October 11, 1945. After a brief membership in the Officers Reserve Corps, he was appointed a first lieutenant, Infantry in the South Carolina Army National Guard on May 20, 1947 and was promoted to the grade of Captain.
Mr. Drake played a key role in organizing a National Guard unit in Ware Shoals. On May 20, 1947, Company “I”, 3rd Battalion, 218th Infantry, South Carolina National Guard was activated with two officers and twenty-seven enlisted men. Captain Drake assumed command of the unit on May 27, 1949 and commanded the unit until April 13, 1962.
During Captain Drake’s command, the company won the Pershing Trophy one year, the National Guard Trophy two years, the Eisenhower Trophy three years, and the National Guard Community Service Award seven years. A total of five members of the unit won Guardsmen of the Year Award. In 1962, Captain Drake retired from the S.C. Army National Guard and was promoted to the grade of Major and became a member of the United States Army Reserve.
Mr. Drake also served the community including Ware Shoals Welfare Committee, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross Blood Drive, March of Dimes, Crusade for Freedom, Emergency Polio Drive, Christmas Fund for the Needy, Christmas Parades and Military Funerals.
On November 2, 1997, then Governor David Beasley presented Mr. Drake with the Order of the Palmetto recognizing his outstanding contributions to Community, State and Nation.
Survivors are: his wife, Margaret, who resides at The Maples, Honea Path; three sons, Jim Drake, Duncan; Ken Drake, Baton Rouge, La.; and Bob Drake, Ware Shoals; six grandchildren, Brad, Will, Jason, Alyson, Maggie and Mary Elizabeth. Three brothers, Judge Ralph Drake, Greenville; Fred Murff, Columbia; and Nick Murff, Aiken. Two sisters, Cecil Gable, Greenwood and Genie Latimer, Due West.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 PM at The First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Jones, Rev. Dan Compton and Mr. Dan Branyon officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Shoals Junction.
Members and former members of the National Guard will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.
The family is at the home, 45 Smith St. and will receive friends at The First Baptist Church Wednesday 1-3 PM. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Music Fund or Building Fund, P.O. Box 449, Ware Shoals, SC 29692.

Ronald Harvey
ABBEVILLE — Ronald Clark Harvey, 68, of 1267 Mount Carmel Road, husband of Mary Jane Foster Harvey, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at his home.
Born in Crawford County, Pa., he was a son of the late Mark Silas and Vivian Clark Harvey. He was a retired electrician and an Air Force veteran, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He was first married to the late Madeline Crawford Harvey.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Rachael Harvey of Abbeville; a son, John S. Harvey of Canadota Lake, Pa.; two brothers, Mark Silas Harvey of Titusville, Pa., and William Paul Harvey of Hamilton, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Private graveside services are Thursday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family is at the home.
