EDGEFIELD — Mary Ruth Johnson Anderson, 76, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital.
A native of Edgefield County, she was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was a retired registered nurse.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Johns of Edgefield; two sisters, Edith Suthers of North Augusta and Sara Cartledge of Edgefield; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial is in Barrs Chapel Methodist Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-6 p.m. today at the home of Sara Cartledge, Gray Street, Edgefield.
Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home is in charge.

Willie ‘Will’ Bertha
PROMISED LAND — Services for Willie “Will” Bertha, of 506 Broadway Ave., are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Robinson & Son Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Cannon. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are C.T. Martin, Robert Carter, James Smith, John Blocker Sr., Goins Duncan and Eugene Duncan.
Flower bearers are friends of the family.
Viewing is Saturday at the mortuary.

HODGES — Services for William Butler, of 4510 Cokesbury Road, are 3 p.m. Sunday at Cokesbury Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Amos Harling, assisted by the Revs. J.L. Robinson, Jerry Brown and Otis Cunningham. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Pallbearers are Stanley Butler, James Butler, Richard Warren, Isiah Kinard, James Johnson and Ralph Evans.
Flower bearers are Gwendolyn Butler, Evelyn Butler, Betty Jackson, Joyce Butler-Warren, Diane Evans, Lana Meekins, Linda Jefferson and Shay Brown.
The family is at the home.

Margie Corley
GREENWOOD — Margie Brown Corley, 100, resident of 1415 Parkway Drive, widow of Marion Buchanan Corley, Sr. died January 3, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, July 7, 1902, she was a daughter of the late I.C. and Mary Jane Spence Brown.
Mrs. Corley was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Mary Giles Sunday School Class of the church.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Owen C. and Jean B. Corley of Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marion B. (Mary Ellen) Corley, Jr. of Dacula, GA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Dennis (Sandra Corley) Davenport, Mrs. Harold (Susan Corley) Davenport, both of Greenwood and Mrs. Jimmy (Candy Corley) Fleming of Dacula, GA; six great-grandchildren, Jason Corley Davenport, Corley Davenport, Brad Davenport, Ginger Davenport Coster, all of Greenwood, Brad Fleming and Buck Fleming, both of Dacula, GA. Mrs. Corley was predeceased by a son, Marion B. Corley, Jr.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 4PM from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Livingston and Rev. James Patterson officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Davenport, Harold Davenport, Jason Corley Davenport, Brad Davenport, Jimmy Fleming and Matt Coster.
Honorary escort will be O.A. “Pepper” Martin, Earl Cowan, Gales McClintock, Ray Bishop, Bill Evans, Bill Ehncy, Rev. Laurin Young, Rev. Bennie Ridlehoover, Johnny Steele and Thomas Hill.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Owen C. Corley, 1515 McCormick Highway, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 to 4 Sunday afternoon.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 108 East Cambridge Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Sarah DeVane
WHITE ROCK — Graveside services for Sarah Stuart DeVane, 92, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 05, 2003 at Springwood Cemetery, Greenville, SC. The family requests that memorials in lieu of flowers be made to either St. Paul United Methodist Church, 427 Pendleton Street, Greenville, SC 29602 or to Chapin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 237, Chapin, SC 29036.
Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Lexington Chapel is in charge.
Miss DeVane died Friday, January 03, 2003 after a long illness. Born in Savannah, GA she was the daughter of the late William Clyde DeVane and Charlotte Peck DeVane. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and completed post-graduate studies in art at Columbia University in New York City. For many years she taught art in the public schools of Greenwood and Spartanburg.
She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth DeVane Lide, of White Rock; nieces, Dorothy DeVane Redfern of Marion, Margaret DeVane Logue of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, Elizabeth DeVane Edminster of Washington , D.C.; nephews, Milton P. DeVane of New Haven, CT, Theodore Ellis Lide, Jr. of Greensboro, NC and Vinton D. Lide of Lexington.

Rosa Freeman
McCORMICK — Rosa Freeman, 79, of Route 3, Box 118, Highway 28, widow of Clifford Freeman, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003 at McCormick Health Care Center.
She was a member of St. Peter A.M.E. Church, Abbeville.
Survivors include two brothers, Leroy Brown and George Brown; four sisters, Helen Brown, Beatrice Brown Coleman, Betty Brown and Francis Ramey.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter A.M.E. Church, Abbeville, conducted by the Rev. Clinton J. Hall II, pastor. Burial is in the church cemetery.
The family is at the home of her niece Rosa Cade, Highway 28.

Dorothy Boswell
Dorothy Frances Boswell, 77, formerly of Wisewood Apartments, widow of Willie Preston Boswell Sr., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at University Hospital, Augusta, Ga.
Born in Bessemer, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Pearson and Jessie Gunnin Pearson Young. She was a member of Augusta Highway Baptist Church and the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Duffie, Anne Akins and Cindy Stockman, all of Ninety Six; a son, Willie P. Boswell Jr. of Westminster, Colo.; a sister, Betty McCombs of Appling, Ga.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Augusta Highway Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Craig Hughes. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. today. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Wayne Isbell, Michael Isbell, Mike Brewer, Buddy Golucke, Bobby Duffie and Danny Harvley.
Honorary escorts are members of the Senior Ladies Sunday School Class of Augusta Highway Baptist Church, along with Nell Bone, Curtis Boswell, Margaret Boswell and Robert Elliott.
Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the church.
The family is t the home of a daughter, Kathy Duffie, 722 Brooks Road.

John E. Braswell, Jr.
CLINTON — John Edward Braswell, Jr., age 88, formerly of Clinton died Saturday, January 4th in the Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
He was born in Alston, Georgia and was the son of the late John Edward Braswell, Sr. and Bessie Cox Braswell.
Mr. Braswell was retired from Clinton Mills, was a member of the First Baptist Church, member of the Campbell Masonic Lodge #44, member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1306 with a Pilgrim Degree, member of the Clinton Mill Old Timers Club and member of the Men’s Organization of the Saluda Nursing Center in Saluda.
He is survived by his wife, Banna Franklin Braswell of Saluda; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn E. (Eddie) and Patsy M. Braswell of Laurens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda B. and Walter P. Sheppard of Silverstreet and Ruth B. and Tony L. Mann of Hodges; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home of Clinton by Dr. Blake Harwell with interment in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens with Masonic rites.
The family will be at the home of his son, Glenn E. (Eddie) Braswell at 302 Westminister Ave. Laurens.
Memorials may be made to the Saluda Nursing Center, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, S.C. 29138.

Joseph W. Cousins
NEWBERRY — Joseph W. Cousins, 84, of 818 Glenn St., Ext., Newberry, SC died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Cousins was born on March 21, 1919 in Newberry, a son of the late L. Kade and Katie Kesler Cousins. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a retired employee of Daniel Construction Company, a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church, and was a Life Member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Mr. Cousins is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Cousins Fowler of Greenwood; a son, R. Dennis Cousins of Laurens, seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren He was predeceased by a son, Joseph W. Cousins.
Graveside funeral services for Joseph W. Cousins will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Laurens by the Rev. Elizabeth Platts.
Memorials may be made to Boys Farm, PO Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108.

Helen Ferguson
ABBEVILLE — Mary Helen O’Shields Ferguson, 81 of 108 Phillips Street, widow of John Bowman Ferguson died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Laurens County October 14, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Charles Whitaker and Gertrude Gregory O’Shields. She was a retired Beautician and a homemaker.
Surviving are one brother, Robert Gary O’Shields of Columbia, nephew and his wife; Ronnie and Vickie Roller of Abbeville along with several other nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two brothers; Odis and Bill O’Shields and one sister; Margaret O’Shields Roller.
Graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Earl Hartley at 3 P.M. Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home of her nephew and his wife, Ronnie and Vickie Roller, 121 West Street Abbeville.

Inez L. Sherrer
WARE SHOALS — Inez Lunsford Sherrer, 82, of 11 N. Greenwood Ave. Extension, wife of W.C. Sherrer, died Saturday, Jan 4, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mountville, she was a daughter of the late William I. and Sara Carlisle Lunsford. She was a retired employee of Riegel Textile Corp. and a member of Ware Shoals First Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Billy Sherrer and Jim Sherrer, both of Greenwood; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Leon Jones.
Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Todd Sherrer, Wade Sherrer, Jerry Davis, Wayne Davis, John Simpson and Harold Kay.
Honorary escorts are Deacons of the First Baptist Church.
Visitation is from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Smith, Courtney Smith and Edward Smith, all of Abbeville and Reggie Smith of Spartanburg; two stepdaughters, Angela Coleman and Dianne Wharton, both of Wichita, Kan.; a stepson, Craig Wharton of Abbeville; five sisters, Mary Dawson and Mrs. Willie (Sarah) Jones, both of Abbeville, Mrs. Curt (Rebecca) Willis of Stone Mountain, Ga., Frances Davis of Richmond, Va. and Ella Radford of Atlanta; five brothers, George Smith, Howard (Amanda) Smith and Waymon (Rose) Smith, all of Abbeville, William (Brenda) Smith of Sumter and Willie Lee (Nellie) Smith of Belton; and six grandchildren, one reared in the home, K’Shawn Smith.
The family is at the home of his wife, 106 Woodlawn Drive, Abbeville.
