Lena Ayers
ABBEVILLE — Mary “Lena” Crawford Ayers, 75, of The Maples in Honea Path, formerly of 1217 Rock Hill Road, wife of Rufus Ayers, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Winn and Mary Neva Price Crawford. She retired from Flexible Technologies and helped to organize the Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department. She was active with 4-H and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Mary Killingsworth Sunday School Class of the church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Mary Anne Rice of Belton and Ruthie Edmunds of Abbeville; a son, David Ayers of Easley; a brother, James P. Crawford of Due West; and seven grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Main Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bob Clemons. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Entombment is at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation is 6-7 tonight at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.
The family is 1217 Rock Hill Road.

Mary Y. Goodman
Mary Y. Goodman, 92, widow of Thurmon Frazier Goodman, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at National Health Care Center.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late John and Tabitha Clem Yeargin. She was the oldest living charter member of Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Alice Brown and Mary Trantham, both of Greenwood and Nellie Rimer of Lexington; two sons, James T. Goodman and Jessie W. Goodman, both of Greenwood; a sister, Ruby Leopard of Greenwood; a brother, Claude Conyer of Greenwood, 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Ninety Six Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Revs. Ben Edwards and Roscoe Bryan. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Gene Goodman, David Goodman, Danny Goodman, Dean Trantham, Larry Smith and Joel Brown.
Honorary escorts are members of the church deacon board.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of her son, James T. Goodman, 404 Abbott St.

Marvin Mathis Sr.
Marvin A. Mathis Sr., 81, of 113 Woodcrest Drive, husband of Runette Anderson Mathis, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at his home.
Born in Haddock, Ga., he was a son of the late Gustav Lawrence “G.L.” and Myrtle Hodges Mathis.
He was the retired president and owner of Marvin Mathis Co. and served as a Navy chief petty officer during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and Hodges United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Marvin A. Mathis Jr. of Hodges; a daughter, Margie Hall of Hodges; a brother, Ralph Mathis of Greenwood; and two grandchildren.
Services are at 2 Sunday at Hodges United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Nena Reynolds. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1.
Pallbearers are Wayne Mathis, Jimmy Mathis, Harley Cobb, Jimmy Cobb, Perry Cobb and Larry Cobb.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

John McDill Sr.
DUE WEST — John William McDill Sr., 80, of 25 Abbeville St., husband of Lavinia Gossett McDill, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at Providence Hospital, Columbia.
The family is at the home of his son, John McDill Jr., 1918 Old Shoals Junction Road, Donalds.
Services will be announced by Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville.

Franklin R. Morris
SALUDA — Franklin Roosevelt Morris, 61, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Batesburg, he was a son of Florine Spann Morris Mason and the late Preston Morris. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Seymour Mason, of Saluda; four sons, Donnie Williams, Franklin Holmes and Maurice Holmes, all of Bronx, N.Y., and Anthony Holmes of Batesburg; a daughter, Frances Holmes of Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Christine Morris Bretto of Jamaica, N.Y., and Linda Robinson of Newark, N.Y. ; and 10 grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Penn Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Videl Addy. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
The family is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Mason, 1260 Bonham Road.

George Rikard
NORTH CHARLESTON — George Rikard died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
Born in Newberry County, he was a member of Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church and retired from the Army with more than 25 years of service.
Survivors include his mother, Josephine R. Bookman of Prosperity; a daughter, Georgia R. Brown of Philadelphia; a stepdaughter, Toni Grant of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Rudolph Wise of Greenwood; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren;
The family is at his mother’s home, 109 Wye St., Prosperity.
Services will be announced by Wilson Funeral Home, Newberry.

Clayton Syrkett
Services for Clayton Syrkett, of 821 Towne St., are 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Epworth, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Cannon, assisted by Minister Carolyn Bolden Tolbert, the Rev. Ivory Goodwin, the Rev. Katherina Bowyer and Minister Michael Butler. The body will be placed in the church at 12:15. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are James Stewart, Joe Rapp, Wayne Syrkett, Sidney Syrkett, Rufus Brunson and Cleveland Syrkett.
Flower bearers are Mary Berry, Grace Hawkins, Mary Leaks, Pearl Holloway, Johnnie Mae Johnson and cousins.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the home.

Charles Webber
Charles D. Webber, 58, of 715 W. Deadfall Road, husband of Victoria Capps Webber, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at his home.
Born in Kingstree, he was a son of Louise Easler Webber and the late Carlisle L. Webber. A resident of Greenwood since 1950, he graduated from Greenwood High School and Lander College and attended Clemson College. He was employed by The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and was an original member of the Swingin’ Medallions. In November 2002, he received the Order of the Palmetto. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Greenwood; a son, Charles Carlisle Webber and a daughter, Amanda Kathryn Webber, both of the home; two brothers, James C. Webber of Heathsville, Va., and Thomas Michael Webber of Anderson.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Main Street United Methodist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 2. A private family burial is in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are James William Webber, Robert Edward Webber, William “Bubba” Easler, William David Webber, Marty Easler and Chuck Easler.
Visitation is 5-8 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Eugene Campbell
Eugene “Gene” Campbell, 62, of 408-B Griffin Ave., husband of Annie L. Williams Campbell, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at his home.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Giles Campbell and Susie Mae Hurley. He attended Brewer High School and was a former construction worker and former employee of Jones Masonry. He was a member of Little Zion A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Cortez (Susie Mae) Gilchrist and Mrs. Randy (Diane) Boozer, both of Greenwood; four brothers, Walter Campbell of Brooklyn, N.Y., Leroy Hurley Jr., Larry Hurley and Lawrence Hurley, all of Philadelphia; six sisters, Mrs. Milous (Mary) Johnson of Long Island, N.Y., Elizabeth Hurley, Diane Hurley and Cora Copeland, all of Philadelphia, Mrs. Chris (Sarah) West and Mrs. John (Joserine) Channel, both of Brooklyn; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Little Zion A.M.E. Church, Grange Road, conducted by the Rev. George H. Oliver. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Timothy Williams, Jamie Patterson, Charlie Reid, Vincent Reese, Johnny Workman and John Patterson.
Flower bearers are Sandra Boozer, Jamecia Williams, Bertha Richards, Pacquita Welton, Patricia Patterson, Stephanie Patterson and Deidra Patterson.

‘Lil’ Caudle
McCORMICK — Lilla Belle “Lil” Rogers Caudle, 75, of 210 Calvert St., widow of H.A. “Sonny” Caudle, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at her home.
Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Elford Lee and Verna Ard Rogers. She was a graduate of McCormick High School and attended Newberry College. Formerly associated with her husband in the operation of Caudle Motor Co., she later retired from John de la Howe School. She was a member of McCormick United Methodist Church and the Wesley Adult Sunday School Class and Savannah Wesley Circle of the church. She was also a member of the McCormick Lions Club, a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of the National Secretaries Association and the S.C. State Employer’s Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Caudle Neal of Newberry; two sons, John L. Caudle II of Irmo and Herbert A. “Dee” Caudle Jr. of McCormick; a sister, Mildred Brown of Sumter; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services are at 2 Saturday at McCormick United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Clendaniel. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in Overbrook Cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight in the social hall at the church.

Merle F. Duvall
LAURENS — Merle Felton Duvall, 71, of 167 Ranch Road, widower of Lois Messer Duvall, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Samuel Theodore and Florence Felton Duvall. He was an Army veteran, a retired employee of Whitten Center and a member of Believers Assembly, Clinton.
Survivors include three daughters, Merleen Duvall and Patricia Williamson, both of Laurens and Pam Leopard of Waterloo; four sons, Samuel Gene Duvall, Charles Wayne Duvall and John Richard Duvall, all of Laurens and Brian Lee Duvall of Hickory Tavern; two sisters, Eunice D. Smith of Sumter and Violet D. Hulfish of Hopewell, N.J.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services are 3:30 today at Kennedy Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Mike Campbell. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family is at the home.

Sylvia A. Lawton
LAKE CITY, FL — Mrs. Sylvia A. Lawton, age 75, of Lake City, Florida, wife of William T. Lawton, died January 21, 2003, at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, FL, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Lawton was a daughter of the late Raymond A. and Maggie Snow Sexton, and was a native of Columbia, and had resided in Spartanburg, and Cleveland, TN, before moving to Lake City, FL, in 1954. She worked as a childcare provider in her home for many years, and was a member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Lake City, FL, where she worked in numerous women’s ministries. Survivors include her husband of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Rita K. and Christopher Young of St. Petersburg, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, William Byron and Paula Lawton of Lake City, FL, and Roger Keith and Angie Lawton of Roswell, GA; sister, Dorothy Brockman of Reidville, SC; six grandchildren, Matthew Keith Lawton, Caleb Zackary Lawton, William Bernard Battista, William Byron Lawton, Jr., Alexis Christiana Young, and Joey Lynn Lawton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Durst Avenue Church of God. The body will be in state one hour prior to the service. Bishop Wallace Purvis officiating. Interment will follow in Overbrook Cemetery in McCormick.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 PM Saturday at Harley Funeral Home.
