LAURENS — Catherine Finley Hill, 83, widow of J. Harold Hill, of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Giff Hampton and Sue Cunningham Finley.
She was a retired Dietary Supervisor for Laurens District Hospital and National Health Care and a member of Laurens First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Clara Smith Sunday School Class.
She is survived by 2 sons, James H. Hill, Jr. and wife Martha T. of Lake Greenwood and Robert H. Hill of Birmingham, AL; a brother, Herman M. Finley of Laurens; 2 grandchildren, James H. (Trey) Hill III and Robert Hampton Hill II; and 3 great grandchildren, Courtney, Kyle, and Collin Hill. She was predeceased by 4 brothers, Clarence Finley, Ossie C. Finley, Robert Finley, and Henry C. Finley and 2 sisters, Leonide Buford and Martha F. Brewer.
Graveside services will be 1:00 PM Monday, February 3, 2003 at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Drs. Bev T. Kennedy, Jr. and Russell Dean.
The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary on Sunday from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Memorials may be made to Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, Chapel Fund, 1 Martha Franks Drive, Laurens, SC 29360, or New Prospect Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, 4996 Highway 221S, Laurens, SC 29360.

NINETY SIX — Laura Jean Fleming Jones, 38, of 1022 Lebanon Church Road, wife of William “Deacon” Monroe Jones died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at her home.
Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home.

Ashby King
WARE SHOALS — Ashby Stewart King, Jr., 99, widower of Kathleen Rogers King, formerly of 17 Sparks Ave., died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Magnolia Manor in Greenwood.
Born in Greenville County he was a son of the late Ashby Stewart, Sr. and Margaret Lyon King. He was twice married, first to the late Willie Pinson King. He was retired from Riegel Textile Co. and a member of the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Ware Shoals Masonic Lodge # 306 A.F.M. and the Hejaz Shrine Temple.
Surviving are one daughter, Frances K. Farmer of Summerville, one brother, Luther M. King of Greenwood, one sister, Emma K. Fletcher of Danville, Va., four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret King Bowers, brothers, John L. King and George P. King, and a sister, Desde Elliott Austin.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday at the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Jones and Rev. Dan Compton officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Ledbetter, Frankie Elliott, Joe Dan Elliott III, Bob Jennings, Zachary Jennings, Tim Matthews, Ron Watts and David Palmer.
Honorary escort will be Masons of Lodge #306 and members of the Mattison Barracca Sunday School Class.
The body is at Parker-White Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1 P.M. Sunday. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 Sunday at the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church. The family will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the Ware Shoals First Baptist Church, Box 449, Ware Shoals, S.C. 29692.

Mary Sue Rush
Mary Sue Norris Rush, 93, of 447 Grace St., widow of George W. Rush, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin A. and Margaret Ellen Wilson Norris. She was a homemaker, a member of Siloam Baptist Church and a member of the TEL Sunday School Class of the church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Leona) Satterfield of Kings Creek, Virginia R. Smith of Greenwood and Mrs. Sammy (Martha) Bagwell of Hodges; a sister, Frances Butler-Ellis of Augusta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Steven Crittendon. Burial is in Bold Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Callison.
Pallbearers are William Mitchell, Ralph Watkins, Kirby Owen, Steve Marinaro, Robin Marinaro, A.J. Satterfield and Will Mitchell.
Visitation is from 4-6 today at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Martha Bagwell, 204 W. Keels Road, Hodges.

Leila Russell
TROY — Leila Edwards Russell, 92, resident of Charleston Road, widow of Sidney Jenkins Russell, Sr. died February 1, 2003 at the Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Bradley, June 3, 1910, she was a daughter of the late David Franklin and Ivey Ann Langley Edwards.
Mrs. Russell was a lifelong and oldest member of Troy United Methodist Church and the Maggie Talbert Sunday School Class of the church.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Derrick (JoAnn R.) Bledsoe of Laurens, a son and daughter-in-law, Sidney J. “Rut” and Sara Russell, Jr. of Troy. One granddaughter, Lynn Bledsoe of Troy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 PM Monday from Troy United Methodist Church with Rev. George H. Boyd officiating.
Burial will be in Troy Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marion Henderson, James Bledsoe, Barney Ouzts, Jimmie Strom, John Langley, Roger Edwards, Jimmy Peeler, Jamie Peeler and Frank White.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, and will be placed in the church at 2 PM Monday.
The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8 Sunday evening.

BRONX, N.Y. — Lolita Finley Straughter, 40, wife of Walter Straughter, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Motefiore Medical Center, Bronx.
Services will be announced by Richie Funeral Home, Abbeville.

‘Junior’ Bonds
CALHOUN FALLS — Clinton “Junior” Bonds, 79, of 3766 Highway 72 W., husband of Gaynell Rucker Bonds, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at his home.
A native of Abbeville County, he was a son of the late S.J. and Elizabeth Hill Bonds. He was retired from the textile industry where he worked as a tying operator and was also an automobile salesman. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Gloria Ellis, Angela Cade of Calhoun Falls and Noel Bonds of the home; a son, Marcus Bonds of the home; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; three sisters, Parnice Parks, Mary Nichols and Annie Louise Ross of Calhoun Falls; two brothers, Frank Bonds of Anderson and Marion Bonds of Calhoun Falls.
Services are 3 p.m. Monday at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by Dr. Thomas Batts and the Rev. Virgil Manning. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Pallbearers are Jamey Turner, Jimmy Smith, Benjy Sorrow, Randy Nichols, Craig Brown and Blake McMahan.
Honorary escorts are the Men’s Bible Class members.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the Calhoun Falls Funeral Home.
Memorials may be flowers or donations to the Hospice of the Piedmont of Greenwood.

Mrs. Thelma Glanton
COLUMBIA — A celebration of life for Mrs. Thelma Ruth Reese Glanton, 77, of Columbia will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 10, 2003, in Suber Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.
Mrs. Glanton, died February 7, 2003. Born on July 3, 1925, in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Lee Reese and Liela Mae Jones Reese. She was a member of Suber Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Betts Sunday School Class and where she had taught Sunday School, worked with the youth, a member of the Council Board and served on the nominating committee. She was an Advertising Administrative Supervisor for Colonial Stores and Owner and Operator of Mam’s Playhouse.
Surviving are her husband Raymond W. Glanton of Columbia; daughters, Vicki & Danny Ross, Verta & Andy Love, Nancy Gail Ballentine; grandchildren, J.W. Creamer, Michael Ross, Danielle Ross, Tina Love Thompson, Connie Love Hall, James Arthur Ballentine, Jr.; six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lari Ruth Ballentine and her four brothers.

Helen Shands
Helen Milling Shands, 91, of 1815 McCormick Highway, widow of David R. Shands Sr., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 at Wesley Commons.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late David Mills and Bessie Cook Milling. She was a graduate of Lander College, taught in the public schools of Greenwood and Abbeville counties and retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. She was a member of Evening Lander Club, First Mount Moriah Baptist Church and the Clifford Barrett Circle of the church.
Survivors include a stepson, David R. Shands Jr. of Redondo Beach, Calif.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Mount Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Revs. Fred Smith and Mariliz Clark.
Visitation is after the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to First Mount Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2215 Mount Moriah Road, Greenwood, SC 29646.

James W. Simmons
WARE SHOALS — James W. “Jimmy” Simmons, 61, husband of Camille Gambrell Simmons, of 368 Harmony Road, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at Hillcrest Hospital in Simpsonville. Born in Tate, Ga., he was a son of the late Hubert Lowen and Sarah Simpson Simmons. He retired from Ball Incon and was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church and the Brewerton Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, David Simmons of Lancaster; a daughter of Ellen S. Smith of Gaston; two brothers, Terry Simmons and Hugh Simmons, both of Ware Shoals; two sisters, Ann Parks of Abbeville and Nena Thomason of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
Services are 4 p.m. Monday at Harmony United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Charlie Summey and John Parks. Burial is in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Shane Simmons, Keith Simpson, William Babb, Johnny, James, Aaron, Leslie and Mo Gambrell.
Honorary escorts are Van Swafford, J.T. Trusty, Sharon Morton, Harold Jones, Dot Simpson, and Iris Hannah.

TRENTON — Dorothy Diane May Busbee Smith, 58, of 183 Paces Creek Road, wife of Jimmy Smith, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at her home.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of Rufus A. May Sr. and the late Mary Frances Williams May. She graduated from Greenwood High School and attended Lander College.
Survivors include her husband of the home; her father of Greenwood; a son, Mark Wise of North Augusta; her stepmother, Edna May of Greenwood; a brother, Rufus A. May Jr. of Greenwood; a sister, Barbara M. Craven of Orangeburg; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Ray Massey.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at her home and at the home of her father, 117 Orchard Park Road, Greenwood.

Johnnie N. Kelley
PARKSVILLE — Johnnie N. Kelley, 84, of Old Augusta Road North, husband of Raye Robertson Kelley, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at his home.
He was a native of Lincoln County, Ga., a son of the late Sheldon E. and Floy Elam Kelley, and lived in Parksville for the past 56 years. He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers, an Army veteran of World War II, and formerly a member of the carpenter’s union.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Linda K. Walton, Lincolnton, Ga, and Gail K. Wright, Parksville, S.C.; a sister Vivian K. Honeycutt, Durham, N.C.; five grand children and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parksville Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Michael Wren.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton, Ga.
The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Gail K. Wright, 105 Old Augusta Road North.

Charline M. Parker
TROY — Services for Charline M. Parker are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, McCormick County, conducted by the Rev. Isaac Booker III. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Kevin Wright, Willie Adams, Moses Johnson, Pames Power, Maurice Wright and Howard Smith.
Flower bearers are members of WHA No. 86 and the nieces.
The family is at her home on Route 1 and at the home of her daughter Teresa Adams at 206 Bintage Road, Greenwood.
