Meredith Rhodes
GREENWOOD — Meredith Junior “Dick” Rhodes, 90, resident of Ashley House, widower of Caroline Arrington Rhodes, died May 2, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Durham, NC, September 5, 1912, he was a son of the late Meredith and Pearl Bagwell Rhodes. He was a 1932 graduate of Greenwood High School. Mr. Rhodes served as Dairy Manager at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home from 1932 to 1946. At the time of his retirement in 1977 he was a farm manager for Connie Maxwell.
A member and former deacon of Connie Maxwell Baptist Church, he was also a former member of the church choir and a former Sunday School Teacher. He was also a member of the Baracca Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. He was a member and past president of the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home Alumni Association. He was a charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Rhodes was a recipient of the Greenwood County Agriculturist Of The Year Award and was a recipient of the Clemson Extension Agriculturist Pioneer Award. He formerly served as the County Commissioner of the Ninety Six District of the Resource, Conservation, and Development Board (RC&D). He was a former member of the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service Board and former chairman of the Greenwood County Cooperative Advisory Committee and was a Greenwood County committeeman for the Farmers Home Administration. He was a past president of the Greenwood County Farm Bureau Association and formerly served as director of the South Carolina Farm Bureau. He served several terms as a director on the Greenwood County Council of Aging.
Mr. Rhodes was an organizer of the Greenwood County Beef Producers Association, a former director of the SC Livestock Council, a charter member of the SC Farm & Rural Appraisers Association and was a former director of the Palmetto Production Credit Association.
In 1995 Mr. Rhodes was recognized for having the most volunteer hours (10,000) in the United States with the Soil & Water Conservation Service. An organizer of the Greenwood Museum, he had remained very active as a volunteer with the Museum. Since retirement he had been very active with Greenwood schools in displaying and discussing his rock collection and with Lander University through the Elder Hostel Program.
Surviving are a son, Stephen T. and wife Linda Rhodes of Greenwood, a granddaughter, Angela and husband Eddie Smith of Greenwood, two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Mabry Smith. Nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 AM Monday at Connie Maxwell Baptist Church with Rev. Dough Kauffman and Dr. Jay Collins officiating.
Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Phil Chovan, Meredith Murry, Jack Parham, James Poston, Ben Davis, Mac Baltzegar, Maxie Moorehead, John Tollison, Jeff Griffin and Ralph Redfern.
Honorary escort will be Connie Maxwell Children’s Home retirees, member of the Resource, Conservation and Development Board, the staff of Greenwood County Soil Conservation, The Ashley House staff, the Beef Producers Association, the Baracca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and Wm. J. Brian Dorn.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10:00 AM Monday.
The family is at the home of Steve and Linda Rhodes, 108 Sagewood Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 Sunday evening and from 10 to 11 Monday morning in the church Social Hall.
Memorials may be made to the Greenwood Museum, 106 Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, PO Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648 for new campus construction in Pee Dee Section of Chesterfield County.

Robert Strickland
GREENWOOD — Robert Craig Strickland, 21, resident of 120 Queens Court, died Friday, May 2, 2003. Born in Charleston, August 19, 1981, he was a biological son of William Henry and Gladys Goldman Strickland. He attended St. Mark United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his parents, Mike and Pam Teeter Bartley of Greenwood, three sisters, Ann Crawford and Nicole Bartley, both of Greenwood and Marie Fuller of Charleston, a brother Bill Strickland of Charleston and a step-mother, Penny Strickland of Charleston. Grandparents, Jerry Crawford of Hodges, Fred and Barbara Teeter of Greenwood and Juanita Conner of Greenwood, and a niece, Katie Crawford.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 PM Monday at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Horne officiating.
Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Adam Whitt, Aaron Cooper, Michael Wallace, Brian Dutcher, Jason Wallace, Brian Morris and Robert Sexton.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 3 PM Monday.
The family is at the home of his parents, Mike and Pam Bartley, 120 Queens Court, Hunter’s Creek, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Sunday evening.

Aaron Wideman
Memorial services for Aaron “Rochie” Wideman of 202 Byrd St. will be 2 p.m. Monday at Percival-Tompkins Chapel conducted by Bishop Emanuel Spearman, assisted by the Rev. Ulysses Parks.

Lois ‘Tee’ Aiken
DONALDS — Lois “Tee” Morton Aiken, 78, wife of Martin Aiken, died Friday, May 16, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Rockford and Mary Terry Morton. She was a member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Hodges, and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of Lexington, N.C.; a son, Larry G. Aiken of Donalds; two daughters, Sylvia J. Aiken of Donalds and Betty Laster of Thomasville, N.C.; four brothers, James Morton of Ware Shoals, Moses Morton of Abbeville, Clarence Morton of Donalds and R.L. Morton of Hodges; three sisters, Cora Jackson, Clara Aiken and Coral Hicks, all of Donalds; a grandson and a great-grandson.
The family is at the home, Bowie Street Apartments, No. 5.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Marjorie L. Bonner
CHARLESTON — Marjorie Louise Bonner, wife of Earl Darrell Bonner, died Thursday, May 15, 2003 at a local hospital.
Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late John Lawrence and Clara Belle Varnadore Craft. She attended Erskine College and was secretary to the master of the electrical shop at the Naval Shipyard during World War II. She was a media specialist at St. Andrews Elementary, then the principal’s secretary at Middleton High School for 20 years. A member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years and served as children’s coordinator. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Auxiliary of the National Association of Postal Supervisors, where she received the Leaves of Gold award.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Walter L. (Carole Bonner) Rathbun III; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at John Wesley United Methodist Church. Burial is 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, downtown chapel.
Memorials may be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407.

Marianne L. Boyd
McCORMICK — Marianne L. Boyd, of 1004 Gary Drive, widow of Francis Joseph Boyd, died Thursday, May 16, 2003 at her home.
A native of Detroit, she was a daughter of the late Ervin and Anyta Ringler Schuster. She moved to Winter Haven, Fla., in 1959 and to McCormick in 1996. In Florida, she served as executive director of the American Cancer Society of Polk County and then as executive director of Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful. She received Sertoma’s Service to Mankind Award for Significant and Meritorious Service to Mankind in 1985, and she was named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 2000.
Survivors include two sons, Wm. E. “Bill” Boyd of McCormick and Frank Boyd of Westminster; three daughters, Beverly Burns of Springfield, Va., Marianne Schneider of Brentwood, Tenn., and Virginia Busch of Atlanta; and nine grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. today at the Lutheran Church by the Lake, conducted by the Rev. Walt Wist. Visitation is after the services in the fellowship hall of the Lutheran Church by the Lake.
Graveside services and burial are 10 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Memorial Park, Winter Haven.
Memorials may be made to the McCormick Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1845, McCormick, SC 29835.

Revis Funderburk
CALLISON — William Revis Funderburk, 82, formerly of Callison Highway, husband of Virginia Hall Funderburk, died Friday, May 16, 2003 at a daughter’s home.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Blyth Funeral Home.

Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

Octavia W. James
ANDERSON — Octavia “Mickey” Welborn James, 86, widow of Robert F. “Jack” James, died Thursday, May 15, 2003 at her home.
Born in Franklin County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Oscar P. and Essie Massey Welborn. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Anderson and a retired interior designer with Sherwin Williams. She was an artist, South Carolina’s Homemaker of the Year in 1955 and represented South Carolina in the Mrs. America Pageant.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley James Findley of Anderson; a brother, Roy C. Welborn of Greenwood; three sisters, Elizabeth W. Maxwell of Greenwood, Annie W. Haynie of Royston, Ga., and Charlotte W. Hummer of Lexington, N.C.
Services are 4 p.m. today at The McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Hayes. Private burial is in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation is 2:30-3:30 today at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Shirley Findley, 216 Huntington Drive.

Evelyn L. Brown
IVA — Evelyn Latham Brown, of 402 Johnny Long Road, wife of Marvin E. “Bob” Brown, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Elbert County Hospital, Elberton, Ga.
Born in Abbeville, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Sally Parnell Latham. She retired from Bigelow Sanford Mill, Calhoun Falls and was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Iva.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Jane B. Burdette of Greenwood; a brother, Jack Latham of Greenwood; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 3 p.m. today in Iva City Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Bundy.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Betty Entrekin
IVA — Betty Rose Branyon Entrekin, 71, of 12 Entrekin Lane, widow of Charles Entrekin Jr., died Friday, May 17, 2002, at her home.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Jefferson Davis and Martha Louise Ware Branyon. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, Antreville, where she was chairwoman of the Care and Nurture Committee.
Survivors include a son, John E. Entrekin of Shalimar, Fla.; two daughters, Martha Lee Cihal of Warner Robins, Ga., and Jackie Rose Forrester of the home; a brother, Bobby Branyon of Gainesville, Ga.; three sisters, Wanda Jane King and Maye Haddon, both of Abbeville and Faye Hannah of Hodges; five grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Todd David, Stephen Toth and Clark Cundiff. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 tonight at The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson.
The family is at the home.

J.T. Horne
CROSS HILL — J.T. Horne, 82, of 1048 S. Main St., husband of Lois Bolton Horne, died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at his home.
Born in Union, he was a son of the late Jesse J. and Grace Horne. He retired from the textile business and Wilson Brothers Sand Co. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cross Hill.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Rex Burgess of Woodstock, Ga., Robbie Burgess of Cross Anchor and James Burgess of Cross Hill; three daughters, Rita Boggero of Laurens, Regina Burgess and LaJuan Gilmer, both of Cross Hill; two sisters, Loree Horne and Alun Gregory, both of Jonesville; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Cross Hill, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 2-4 Sunday at the church.

Alice ‘Bett’ Lanier
GREENWOOD — Alice Mae “Bett” Moore Lanier, 56, of 313 Lanham St., widow of John Lanier, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Rebecca Moore. She was a member of Bethlehem Church of God.
Survivors include three sons, Melvin Moore and Jeffery Moore, both of Greenwood and Gregory Moore of Columbia; a sister, Mary Helen Moore of Greenwood; and six grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.

CROSS HILL — Graveside services for Markevious Omar Light, of 242 Longview Road, are 3:30 Sunday in Evening Star Memorial Gardens, conducted by Pastor John Henry Parks.
