Walker Hyman

GREENWOOD — Services for Walker E. Hyman, 66, are 3 p.m. (viewing 2 p.m.) today at Lupo Memorial UMC with burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Clinton to Louis and Mary Nix Hyman, he died Nov. 12, 2004. Surviving are wife, Margaret Hyman; daughter, Lynda Rutledge; sons, Ken Hyman, Dennis Batson, David, Ross, George Williams; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Dr. Kenneth Johnson

FLORENCE — Dr. Kenneth Ardell Johnson, 62, of Florence, SC, died Thursday, November 11, 2004, at his residence after a courageous 9 month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born on November 6, 1942, in Belmond, Iowa a son of the late Alice and Ardell Johnson.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sarah Willing Johnson of Florence; 3 children, Christopher M. Johnson of Charlotte, NC, T. Patrick Schroder of Charleston, SC, and Allison M. Johnson of the home; his brother, Charles S. Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; 14 Nephews and 4 nieces; 1 great-nephew and 1 great-niece.

Ken was an accomplished and devoted plastic surgeon who practiced in Florence for the last 16 years and previously in Augusta, GA. He was a kind, generous and compassionate man who shared his God given gift and talent with his patients to help them feel better about themselves. Many of those patients required reconstructive surgery after cancer, and devastating and disfiguring accidents and many have expressed to his family their gratitude and appreciation for his work, compassion and caring personality.

He graduated from Belmond Community School Systems in Iowa, St. Olaf College in Minnesota, the University of Iowa Medical School, St. Paul-Ramsey Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota, Duke University in North Carolina and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. He was Board Certified in 2 Sub-Specialties, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Otolaryngology. Ken also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, attained the rank of Major and was honorably discharged in 1973.

Ken was born into the Lutheran faith but converted to Episcopalian in 1986 becoming a member of All Saints Episcopal Church. He was a member of the American Medical Association, SC Medical Association, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Florence County Medical Society, SC Plastic Surger Society, and the Lipoplasty Society of North America. He served on the Staffs of McLeod Regional Medical Center, Carolinas Hospital System and Wilson Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, November 15, 2004, in All Saints Episcopal Church.

Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers-in-law, Edward F. Willing, Jr. of Windsor, SC, Kevin Johnston of Columbia, SC, Charles Martin and DeWayne Deal both of Aiken, SC, his nephews, Eric Johnson, David Johnson and Robert Johnson all of Iowa.

The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Sunday, November 14, 2004, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence, SC.

Memorials may be made to the All Saints Episcopal Church or to the KAJ Memorial Account, P.O. Box 12653, Florence, SC 29504.

Walter LeNoir Sr.

HORATIO — Services and burial for Walter Marion LeNoir Sr., 84, are 4 p.m. Monday at Church of the Ascension at Hagood. Visitation: 6-8 tonight at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, Sumter. Born in Horatio to Walter and Rose LeNoir, he died Nov. 13, 2004. Surviving: wife, Leilah LeNoir; children, Walter Jr., David LeNoir, Virginia DuBose, Margaret Kinder; 3 grandchildren; 1 stepgrand; 3 great-grandchildren; others.

James Roddey

GREAT FALLS — Services for James Henry Roddey, 94, are 11 a.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church, burial in Greenlawn Cemetery with Masonic rites. Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Chester Co. to Edward and Mary Dover Roddey, he died November 14, 2004. Surviving are wife, Burley Ellisor Roddey; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

Helen O’Neal

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Helen Bell O’Neal, 88, of 724 Green St. St. Johns Towers, Augusta, GA died Monday November 15, 2004 at her residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bethel United Methodist Church, Harleyville, SC with Rev. Bob Lee officiating, burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George. Pallbearers will be her great nephews.

Helen B. O’Neal was born April 8, 1916 in the bend section of Harleyville, a daughter of the late Holcombe Marion Bell, Sr. and Claudia Campbell Bell. She was a school teacher, a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Harleyville High School and a 1937 graduate of the University of South Carolina. She was predeceased by a grandson, Daniel Matthew O’Neal; a sister, Matilda Von Lehe; brothers, Marion Bell, Ralph Bell, Dick Bell and Bob Bell.

Surviving are a son and his wife, John Blanton and Yvonne O’Neal III of North Augusta, SC and a daughter her husband, Noel O. and Cass Ingram of Augusta, GA, a brother, Pitkin G. (Happy) Bell of Harleyville and three grandchildren: John Blanton O’Neal IV, of Charleston, Erin Noel O’Neal of North Augusta and Sarah M. Ingram of Augusta, GA, a great-grandson, John Blanton O’Neal, V. of Charleston, SC.

Roy Pearce

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for R. Roy Pearce, 84, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the R. Roy Pearce Scholarship Endowment, Clemson University Foundation, c/o Betty McClellan, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29634-5602.

Mr. Pearce, husband of Margery Ellsion Walker Pearce, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Tom B. and Anne Tribble Pearce. He was a graduate of Columbia High School where he served as president of the student body from 1936-1937, and an honor ROTC graduate of Clemson University where he was president of the junior and senior classes, and chairman of the Senior Council, 1940-41. He was a member of the Clemson football team from 1938 through 1940, playing on Clemson’s Cotton Bowl team of January 1940.

Mr. Pearce entered active military duty on June 20, 1941, as 2nd Lieutenant of the 8th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson. He served in the European Theater of Operation, being decorated for participating in the invasions of Oran, North Africa; Gela, Sicily; Salerno, Italy; and Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. He was awarded four Arrowhead decorations for the invasions, and was decorated with the Bronze Star, and Oakleaf Cluster to the Bronze Star; his unit was awarded with the French Croix de Guerre. Mr. Pearce was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Mr. Pearce began working for PYA/Monarch in 1941, and retired in 1978. From 1979 until 2001 he served as Chairman of the Board for Budweiser of Columbia, Inc., Budweiser of Anderson, Inc., and Budweiser of Greenville, Inc. During his business career, Mr. Pearce served on the board of directors of Sara Lee Corporation, SCN Bank and Wachovia (42 years), and Sonoco Products Company (20 years). He also served on the board of trustees of Providence Hospital Foundation for over 12 years, and was past chairman of the board of deacons of Eastminster Presbyterian Church of which he was a long-time member. Mr. Pearce also served as president of the Columbia Rotary Club.

Mr. Pearce was the recipient of the Clemson Distinguished Service Award (1963), an honorary doctorate of laws from Clemson University (1986), Clemson’s President’s Award (1988), the 1991 Thomas G. Clemson Medallion, and he received the Kirkman Finley, Jr., Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts from the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties on May 6, 1998. He was also presented both the Order of the Palmetto by Governor David Beasley, and the “Key to the City” of Columbia by Mayor Bob Coble on May 6, 1998. He was the recipient of the Jack Kraft Award for Excellence in Philanthropy by the Columbia Museum of Art (1998), the Distinguished Clemson University Alumni Award, the Columbia College Medallion (November 1, 1999), the Columbia College James Milton Arial Society (November 1, 1999), the Order of the Purple Medallion from Columbia College (November 1999), an honorary doctorate in Business Administration from USC (May 2000), and he was named 2004 Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year.

Surviving are his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, M. Walker Pearce and Jack Weatherford of St. Paul, Minn., Anne P. Baroody and Dr. Samuel Baroody of North Myrtle Beach, and Jean P. Rentz and Ronny Rentz of Mayesville; grandchildren, Walker P. Buxton and her husband John Edward Buxton of Charleston, Roy P. Maybank and his wife Amanda Maybank of Charleston, Drew B. Ridout, Pearce Ridout, John D. Snipes, II, and his wife Ashley Snipes of Dunn, N. C., and Margery P. Cohen and her husband Jerod Cohen of Apex, N. C.; great-grandchildren, Walker P. Buxton, J. Edward Buxton, E. Pearce Buxton, Jacob M. Ridout, and J. Stuart Cohen, Jr.; and brothers, James T. Pearce of Greenville, and Phil E. Pearce of Charlotte, N. C. Mr. Pearce was predeceased by his brother Thomas B. Pearce, Jr.

Charles Taylor

LUGOFF — Funeral services for Charles Edwin Taylor, 75, will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Lugoff First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Greg Sweet will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 19, 2004, from 6-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Lugoff First Baptist Church, 106 Longtown Road, Lugoff, SC 29078 or to Dutchman Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Taylor died Tuesday, November 16, 2004. Born in Pageland, he was the son of Effie Deese Taylor and the late Hazel Thomas Taylor. Mr. Taylor had retired from the DuPont Company and was owner of Taylors Marina on Lake Wateree. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Lugoff First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Qualls Taylor; children, Shirley Willis and her husband, Joe, of Eastover, Chuck Taylor and his wife, Jeanette, of Winnsboro, Kathy Taylor of Columbia and Kenneth S. Taylor and his wife, Leah, of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Lavaughn Taylor; sister, Rose Ann Mays. He was predeceased by grandson, Joe Larry Willis Jr.; brother, Thomas Taylor; sister, Sandra Bess.

He was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.

Mark Garren

COLUMBIA — Service for James Mark Garren, 37, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Memorials may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, 827 Wildewood Ave., Columbia, SC 29203 or to Boys Farm, Newberry, S.C. Visitation will be Saturday 7-9 p.m. at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Garren died Wednesday, November 17, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Luther Talley Garren, Jr. and Judy Hair Garren. A graduate of Chapin High School, he worked for Morganelli’s Party Shop on Forest Drive for twenty years. He was a former member of the North Columbia Optimist Club and a member of the North American Hunt Club and Ascension Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carole DuPree Garren; daughter, Candice Alexandria Garren; his parents of Columbia; adopted children, J. Alan Warren, Tara L. Edwards,Wendy J. Hill and Charro N. Hanahan, all of Columbia; siblings: Betsy Myers and her husband, Berlin Myers, Jr., of Summerville; Catherine Garren of Irmo; Talley Garren and his wife, Kay, of Florence; Bob Garren and his wife, Lynne, of Springfield, Va.; Fred, Charles and Carole Garren, all of Columbia; Joyce McKulka and her husband, Jeff, of Irmo; and Mike Garren and his wife, Kani, of Simpsonville; ten nieces and nephews; five great-nieces and great-nephews; mother-in-law and father-in-law, William S. and Mary Ann DuPree; and brother-in-law, William T. DuPree.

Norma Bradham

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Miss Norma V. Bradham, 95, died Thursday, November 18, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga. Born in Paxville, S.C., March 23, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Cornelia Brown. She was a retired stenographer. She had been a member for over 50 years at Park Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was very active in church activities. She had lived in Columbia, S.C., most of her life.

Cryptside services were held November 20, 2004, in Parkhill Cemetery, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.

She is survived by two nieces: Cornelia Nelson of Tucker, Ga., and Carol Tubberville of Columbus, Ga. She was predeceased by a sister: Merle B. Jackson.
