CALHOUN FALLS — Vivian Cann Powell, 87, of 515 Mud Creek Road, widow of Howard Powell, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel B. Cann Sr. and Jessie Mae Campbell Cann. She was a retired secretary for Westpoint Stevens and a member of Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Women’s Ministries of the church. She graduated from Sharon High School.
Survivors include a son, Jim Powell of Calhoun Falls; three daughters, Nancy Crocker and Frankie Taylor, both of Calhoun Falls and Barbara Brock of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Samuel B. Cann Jr. of Abbeville; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by Dr. Thomas Batts and the Revs. Virgil Manning and Lawrence Johnson. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
The family is at the home of Frankie and Buster Taylor, 631 Mud Creek Road.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, 489 Mud Creek Road, Calhoun Falls, SC 29628.

Dorothy Prewett
SALUDA — Dorothy Mae Howard Prewett, 78, of 402 Forrest Hills Road, wife of Charles T. Prewett, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born in Lincolnton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late David Irwin and Corine Reid Howard. She was a homemaker and a member of Good Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Bonnie Johnston of Auburn, Ind., Ann Furnish of Hamilton, Ind., Linda Eads of Kendallville, Ind., Doris Prewett of Leesville and Joyce Brown of Greenwood; three sons, Tom Prewett of Gilbert, Bruce Prewett of Leesville and Mark Prewett of Saluda; a sister, Ruby Howard of Martinez, Ga.; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 3 Wednesday at Ramey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Bill Owings. Burial is in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Clark Sanders
ABBEVILLE — Clark Edward Sanders, 70, formerly of the Charleston area, husband of Marilyn B. Stowell Sanders, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at his home.
Born in Elberton, Ga., he was a son of the late Charlie H. and Bertha E. Cordell Sanders. He attended North Charleston High School and Palmer College. A Navy veteran, he served during the Korean conflict and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard with more than 30 years of service. He was then employed by TDS for about 10 years. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Greenwood.
Survivors include his wife of Abbeville; a daughter, Joyce Murphy of North Charleston; a stepdaughter, Barbara McGill of St. Mary, Mo.; a stepson, Randy Langley of St. Mary; two grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services are 2 p.m. today at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville. Burial is in Carolina Memorial Park, Charleston.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.

Arthur Starks
Arthur Starks, 66, of Bonds Community Home, 308 Jenkins Springs Road, died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Socrates and Menther Lee Harris Starks. He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include a brother, Alexander Starks of Hodges; five sisters, Christine Cloud and Estelle Anderson of Hodges, Edna Gideon of Greer, Daisy Johnson of Ware Shoals and Patricia Styles of Greenville; three cousins reared in the home, Mary Leggett and Roosevelt Leggett of Greenville and Doris Harling of Ware Shoals.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.

Betty Sullivan
ORANGE PARK, FL — Betty Jean Burke Sullivan, 70, died Saturday, June 07 2003 at Doctors Lake National Health Care Center, Orange Park, FL.
Born in Thomson, GA, she was a daughter of the late Fannie Burke Harrison. She formerly ran a daycare center on the Old McCormick Highway.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Wayne Byrd and Larry Preston Byrd, both of Greenwood.
Surviving are three daughters, Shirley J. Byrd of Jacksonville FL, Bonnie S. Craft of Hodges, and Pamela Higdon of Ware Shoals; one son, Jim Sullivan of Greenwood; a daughter in Christ, Janice Young of Jacksonville, FL; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be David Burke, Jeffery Burke, Ormon Keathley Jr., Ormon Keathley III, Kirby Hopkins and Roger McAllister.
The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Bonnie Craft, 1003 Ridge Road, Hodges.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of North East Florida, 850 West 8th Street, Jackson-ville, FL 32205.

Henry James Carroll
Services for Henry Carroll of 320 Sullivan St. are 3 p.m. Monday at Flint Hill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. John R. Brightharp. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Willie Lindsey, Curtis Wideman, Lewis Carroll Jr., Richard Lewis, Robert Morgan and Raymond Kelley.
Flower bearers are cousins.
The family is at the home and the home of a daughter, Autumn Carroll, 111-A Jones St., Greenwood.

Faye B. Batchelor
Faye Bevis Batchelor, 48, of 105 Melanie Court, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at her home.
Born in Cherokee County, she was a daughter of the late Lawson and Georgie Price Batchelor. She was a member of McKown’s Mountain Baptist Church, Gaffney.
Survivors include two brothers, Albert and Raymond Bevis, both of Gaffney.
A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney, conducted by the Rev. Dean Painter.
Visitation is 6-7 tonight at White-Columns Funeral Home, Gaffney.
The family is at the home of her brother, 3844 Chesnee Highway, Gaffney.

Pinky Dowis
NINETY SIX — Fred Donald “Pinky” Dowis, 69, of 103 Dogwood Drive, husband of Mary Walker Dowis, died Sunday, June 22, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Ruby Cobb Dowis and the late Fred Marion Dowis. He retired from Greenwood Mills as personnel manager and was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of Ninety Six First Baptist Church, where he taught the men’s Bible class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Donnie Dowis of Greenwood; a daughter, Susan Collins of Due West; two brothers, John Dowis of Ninety Six and Dr. Joe Dowis of Seneca; and five grandchildren.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ninety Six First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Robin Fisher. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Sammy Corley, Melvin Pace, Bim Snipes, John McCray, Alton Ouzts, Wayne Davis, Greg Wright, Ronnie Fisher, Hiram Mitchell and Joe John Dowis.
Honorary escorts are the men of Ninety Six First Baptist Church, Tincey Fortner, Allen Fortner, Pat Dixon, Phillip Fortner and Al Fortner.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday, where the family will receive friends until 2:15 p.m.
The family is at the home.

Myrtle Brooks Fisher
Myrtle Brooks Fisher, of 401 West Durst Avenue, widow of Julian Monroe Fisher, Jr., died Saturday, June 21, 2003.
Born at Roselands Plantation in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Loudon Brooks and Myrtle Fellers Brooks. She attended Lander College and the College of Commerce. For twenty-five years, she was self-employed with her husband at the Beech Haus Restaurant in Banner Elk, NC.
Mrs. Fisher was an early member of the Red Cross Volunteers at Self Memorial Hospital and a charter member of the hospital auxiliary. A nationally accredited flower show judge with a Master rating, she was also a nationally accredited landscape critic. She was a member and past president of the Holly Garden Club, the Banner Elk Garden Club, and the Greenwood Federation of Garden Clubs, being named Woman of the Year by that organization in 1970. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a past president of Episcopal Church Women, a member of St. Anne’s Chapter of the Church of the Resurrection, as well as a life member of the Greenwood Woman’s Club and the Edgefield Historical Society.
Prior to moving to Banner Elk, Mrs. Fisher served on the Greenwood City Beautification Commission as chairman. She initiated the use of crepe myrtle trees in the landscaping project along the railroad tracks that passed through downtown at that time, and she helped organize the first South Carolina Festival of Flowers.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Bo (Jane) Schronce of Lincolnton, NC; two sons, Stephen Everett Fisher of Titusville, FL and Julian Monroe Fisher, III of Vienna, Austria; three grandchildren, Brooks Fisher West of Lexington, KY, Logan McCall Schronce of Lincolnton, NC and Julian Monroe Fisher, IV of Vienna, Austria; a sister, Mary Jane Brooks Mobley; four brothers, Carroll H. Brooks, E. Loudon Brooks, Jr., Thomas Barry Brooks and Emmett Fellers Brooks; and a brother-in-law, William Ervin Fisher, all of Greenwood.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood at 2 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, with the Right Reverend William A. Beckham, 6th Bishop of Upper South Carolina, the Reverend Dr. Wilmot T. Merchant, III, Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, North Myrtle Beach, SC, and the Reverend Tim Ervolina, Deacon of the Church of the Resurrection, officiating. Visitation will follow the service in Bishops Hall.
The family requests that memorials be made to York Place Episcopal Church Home for Children, 234 Kings Mountain Street, York, SC 29745; Church of the Resurrection, PO Box 3283, Greenwood, SC 29648; and HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Cleta L. Lounsbury
WATERLOO — Cleta Langley Lounsbury, 59, of 111 Lake Overlook Road, wife of Charlie W. Lounsbury, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at her home.
Born in Augusta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Grady Earl Langley and Mary Inez Flanagan Webb. She was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a member of the Greenwood Community Church of Nazarene.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Wanda Sue Wright and Cleta E. Barron, both of Waterloo, Deborah E. Edwards of Greenwood; a son, Bobby L. Dixon-Rogers of the home; five sisters, June Tedards and Bertha Fain, both of Greenwood, Maxine Stancil of Hickory Tavern, Evelyn Jones and Doris Walls, both of Greenville; a brother, Wilburn Hammond of Greenville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Community Church of the Nazarene, conducted by Pastors Bob Albert and George Gardner. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Ken Tedards, Barry Tedards, Jerry Fain, Pete Fain, Eddie Fain and Frankie Fain. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Laverne I. Steward
Laverne Irvin Steward, 78, of 2220 Montague Ave. Ext., Lot 122, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Des Moines, Ia., he was a son of the late Herschel A. and Wallie Brant Steward. He was a retired truck driver with Teamsters Local 120 and was a Merchant Marine during WW II.
Survivors include a son, Paul Steward of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Cathy Castro of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister, Lois Markwood of Cold Springs, Minn.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

David Allen Anderson
SANGER, TX — David Allen Anderson, 63, of 805 N. 4th St., died Sunday, June 22, 2003 at Denton Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Anderson was born January 10, 1940 in Elberton, GA, was an Army veteran, and was a retired operator for Chevron Refinery. He graduated in 1958 from Ninety Six High School in Ninety Six, SC.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Jewell Anderson; daughters, Rachel Anderson, Lewisville, TX; and Audrey Bryant and husband Bill Bryant of Denton, TX; a granddaughter, Lauren Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11AM at Coker Funeral Home, with Reverend James Huse officiating.
Visitation is from 7 to 8 PM today at Coker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association.
