Rev. Mary Mitchell
The Rev. Mary Childs Mitchell, 70, of 125 S. Hospital St., widow of Robert Arthur Mitchell Sr., died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mamie Lee Childs. She was a battery filler at Greenwood Mills Durst Plant. A member of St. Paul F.B.H. Church, she was a member of the mother board and deacon board, Y.P.I. president and a Sunday School teacher. She was a former pastor of White Rock Holiness Church in McCormick.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Mitchell Jr. of the home and Dwayne Lamont Mitchell of Austell, Ga.; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Judith Ann) Odom of Decatur, Ga., Yolanda Shendelle Mitchell and Kasandra Wyette Mitchell, both of the home; two brothers, Joseph Childs of Greenwood and Arthur Childs of Asbury Park, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Annie L.) Harrison of Hodges and Mrs. Joel (Sarah) Davis of Buffalo, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

Ralph Phillips
HONEA PATH — Luther Ralph Phillips, 87, of 418 Sherwood Ave., widower of Reba Jane Gambrell Phillips, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late William Raymond and Ella Gambrell Phillips. He retired from Riegel Textile Corp. and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Honea Path First Baptist Church, the VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include a brother, John Phillips of Honea Path and a sister, Janie Ashley of Donalds.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Pruitt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mike Moody. Burial is in the Garden of Memories.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Honea Path Rescue Squad, Gaines Road, Honea Path, SC 29654.

Domer Ridings Jr.
TROY — Domer Frederick Ridings Jr., 87, of 662 Faulkner Mountain Road, husband of Geraldine Wisenbaker Ridings, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center. The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

Wanda Lataine Ross
EDGEFIELD — Wanda Lataine Ross, 63, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Edgefield Health Care Center.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., she was a retired bookkeeper and a member of Edgefield First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth “Ken” Hopkins of Alpharetta, Ga., Dr. Tony Hopkins of Greenwood and Brian Hopkins of Monroe, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth Ross of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Sherman Ross of Knoxville; a sister, Julia Yardley of Knoxville; and five grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Edgefield First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Tony Hopkins and the Rev. Keith Goretzka. Burial is 2 p.m. Friday at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville.
Visitation is after the services at the church.

Mary Lucille Metts Avery
CLINTON, SC — Mary Lucille Metts Avery "Granny", 94, the last surviving member of her immediate family, passed away on August 7, 2003 at NHC in Clinton.
Born September 27, 1908 in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Laura Ellen Leach Metts; and the widow of Ludie Frank Avery, Sr.
Mrs. Avery was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Newberry and attended Lydia Pentecostal Holiness Church as long as her health permitted.
She is survived by seven sons and their spouses; Joe and Pearl Avery of Greenwood, Frank and Polly Avery of Joanna, Doug Avery and Vickie Phelps of Clinton, George and Peggy Avery, Jimmy and Virginia Avery, Mac and Eloise Avery, Bobby and Beulah Avery all of Clinton; three daughters and their spouses, Geraldine and D.M. Morris of Newberry, Virginia "Sissie" and Curtis Nelson of Clinton, Lynda and Larry Penland of Laurens; a sister-in-law, Doris Metts of Laurens; twenty-nine grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; fifty great grandchildren; sixteen great great grandchildren; and longtime friend, Theta Collins of Gray Court.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha Metts Gause and Victoria Metts Fulmer; two brothers, George and William Metts; and several grandchildren and step grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 9th, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home of Clinton.
Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10th at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Clinton with interment at Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Larry and Lynda Penland, 1467 Penland Rd., Laurens.

Nancy Keene Carroll
SUITLAND, Md. — Nancy Keene Carroll died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003.
Survivors include two sons, Herman Keene and Kaseem Keene; a daughter, Rita Keen Manago; a sister; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Funeral Home. Burial is in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is 6-9 Monday at the funeral home.

Annie Mae Cromer
NINETY SIX — Annie Mae Cromer, of 137 Ebony Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003 at her home. Born in Cross Hill, she was a daughter of the late Walter T. and Beatrice Thomason Cromer. She was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah DuBerry of the home; a son, Walter L. Cromer of Fort Washington , Md.; two brothers, Robert Golden Jr. and Willie Golden, both of Clinton; two sisters, Annie Simmons of Clinton and Pearl Copeland of Newark, N.J.; a stepdaughter; five stepsons; 18 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Parks Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Anthony Sims, assisted by the Rev. James Gray and Evangelist Elizabeth Frazier. Visitation is 7-8 Sunday at the funeral home. Parks Funeral Home, Greenwood, is in charge.

Bernice Fletcher
Bernice Adams Fletcher, 84, of 602 Oak St., widow of Louden Fletcher Sr., died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Smith and Neaner Jackson Adams. She was a former member of Wesley Chapels Church and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a missionary. A former seamstress at Eastern Sportswear, she was also a member of Satterwhite Brown Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Elks and the Women’s Aide Society.
Survivors include a son, Louden Fletcher Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska; a stepson, David Wideman of Greenwood; a daughter, Sara Helen Wilson of Edgefield; a sister, Sarah Louden of Ninety Six; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Willie J. Key officiating and Dr. Ken Mufuka presiding. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are friends of the family.
Visitation is Sunday evening at the home.

James E. Freeman
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — James E. Freeman, 69, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 in Virginia Beach.
He was born in McCormick, S.C., a son of Alberta Brown Freeman and the late John E. Freeman. A former member of Springfield A.M.E. Church, McCormick, he retired from the New Rochelle, N.Y., Police Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Vann of Lavergne, Tenn.; two sons, Brian Freeman and John Freeman, both of Virginia Beach; his mother of McCormick; a brother, Bobby Freeman and two sisters, Barbara Brown and Alice Jennings, all of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; eight grandchildren. Services and burial are 11 a.m. Monday in Winchester, Va.

Irene A. Kelly
BELTON — Irene Alexander Kelly, 87, widow of Don W. Kelly, of 408 Park Road, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at Hospice of the Upstate.
Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Dora Moss Alexander. She was a homemaker, a retired textile worker and a member of Belton Church of God.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Rice and Maxine Carter of Belton; two sons, Voniver Kelly of Charleston and Devant Kelly of Greenwood; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Belton Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Grant, Voniver Kelly and the Rev. Chris Jerrard. Burial is in The Garden of Memories.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cox Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Janice Rice, 408 Park Road.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

Kendra Quarles
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. — Kendra Benita Quarles, 23, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at home.
Born in Washington , D.C., she was a daughter of Brenda Searles Quarles and David Quarles III.
Formerly employed by Barnes Security Co., Washington , D.C., she was a member of Shiloh A.M.E.
Church, McCormick, S.C., and an affiliated member of Contee Zion Church in Maryland.
Survivors include her mother of Capitol Heights; her father of Washington , D.C.; grandparents, Janie Searles of McCormick, Hattie and David Quarles Jr.; great-grandfather, David Quarles Sr. of Maryland; a sister, Rosilyn Searles Cumberbatch of Virginia; a stepsister, Angela Quarles and two stepbrothers, David D. Quarles and Kevin Wilson, all of Washington , D.C.
The family is at the home of a grandmother, Janie Searles, Cedar Road, McCormick and the home of an aunt, the Rev. Vivian S. Edwards, 104 Broken Ridge Court, Greenwood, S.C.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home, McCormick.

Tony Roberts
GREENWOOD — Tony Franklin Roberts, 44, resident of 518 Willard Road, husband of Cathy Barre Roberts, died August 8, 2003 at his home.
Born in Greenwood County April 7, 1959, he was a son of Frank T. and Darlene Leopard Roberts. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Piedmont Technical College. He was also a graduate of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Academy and was a US Army Veteran. He was a member of Emerald Baptist Church.
Mr. Roberts was employed by the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department where he had obtained the rank of Captain.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and parents of Greenwood, are a daughter, Jeri Nesbeth Roberts of the home and a sister, Denise Hill of Ware Shoals. Maternal grandmother, Ruby Y. Leopard of Greenwood. Nieces, Valerie Erett, Alesia Erett and Cassie Hill, a nephew, Stevie Hill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00pm Sunday at Emerald Baptist Church with Rev. Curtis Eidson and Captain Phillip Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be officers of the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department.
Honorary escort will be officers of the Greenwood County Sheriff's Department and other Law Enforcement officers.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2:00pm Sunday.
The family is at the home and at the home of his parents, 520 Willard Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Saturday evening.
Memorials may be made to Emerald Baptist Church, 1510 Evans Pond Road, Greenwood, SC 29649 or to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.

Lois P. Anderson
McCORMICK — Lois Pope Anderson, of Freeman Drive, widow of Jack Anderson, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick County, she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Annie Brown Pope. She was a member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church and served in the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Women’s Home Aide Society No. 1 and was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Larry Anderson of McCormick; five daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Vivian) Parker, Lois Dale Anderson and Gloria Anderson, all of McCormick, Mrs. Larry (Cassandria) Hackett of Bradley and Mrs. David (Mabel) Middleton of Greenwood; a granddaughter reared in the home, Glacia Gaskin of the home; two grandsons reared in the home, Tracy Anderson and Jerald Anderson, both of Greenwood; two sisters, Ammie Mims of Greenville, and Mabel Parker of Detroit; and 21 grandchildren.
Services are at 3 Wednesday at Shiloh A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Carey Grady. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are church officers.
Flower bearers are members of the Women’s Home Aide Society.
Visitation is until 2:30 Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home, and then at the church.
The family is at the home.
