Richard Edward Getty

October 10th, 1921 - September 10th, 2010

Memorial service for Richard Edward Gettys, who died September 10th, 2010, will be held Sunday at 7:30 pm, September 12th, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Mr. Gettys was born October 10, 1921, in Lugoff, SC, the son of the late Benjamin Wylie Gettys and Kate Bell Gettys Ewart. He was educated in the Camden public schools, obtained his B.S. in Agronomy from Clemson College in 1942 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society. He was awarded the Anderson Scholarship from Clemson and was a member of Alpha Zeta honorary fraternity. He received his M.S. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, in 1943. Mr. Gettys was employed by Coker’s Pedigreed Seed Company in 1943 and became Director of Hybrid Corn Breeding in 1945, a position he held until retirement in 1988. From their inception, he was an active Director of S.C. Crop Improvement Association and S.C. Foundation Seed Association. He was an active member of American Seed Trade Association Hybrid Corn Division, serving on the Program Committee and Basic Research Committee. Mr. Gettys pioneered the first successful winter hybrid corn nursery in the Homestead, Florida, area and developed early weevil resistant hybrids for the south. He is survived by his wife Ann Henson Gettys, daughters Dr. Katherine Louise Gettys of Canton GA, Elizabeth Ann of Santa Monica CA, Margaret McAlpine of Hartsville, and son Richard E. Gettys, Jr., of Hartsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Martha Gettys (George) McClure of Otto NC, Louise Gettys of Columbia. He was predeceased by his brother, Benjamin W. Gettys, Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Richard G. Wilson Scholarship Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Avenue, Hartsville; Robert E. Moore Jr. Scholarship Fund at Clemson University, 1032 Bentwood Road, Hartsville; or charity of one’s choice.

Melissa O'Neal Howle

Mrs. Howle, widow of Robert Ray Howle, died Friday, September 10, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Roland and Margaret Jones O'Neal. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was a volunteer with Chesterfield Sunshine for Hospice. Her heart was the church which was her life. She taught Sunday School, was the designated taxi service for her friends, loved to cook, and cared for all in the community. She was a loving and kind wife, mother, and grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, John (Judy) Howle of Jacksonville, FL, Rev. George K. (Pam) Howle of Aiken, SC, Barry Howle of Hartsville, SC; son-in-law, Jesse Tyner of Patrick, SC; grandchildren, Geanie Howle, Bess Reed, Rusty Howle, R. J. Howle, Rex Tyner, Katrina Holloman; great-grandchildren, Sydney Reed, Jacob Reed, Michael Tyner, Kasey Tyner, Karl Holloman, Dylan Holloman, Amber Holloman. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elaine Tyner; brother, Jerry O'Neal; sister, Mary Gandy; grandson, Darrin Tyner.

Anne Tarte Wiesen

Memorial services for Anne Tarte Wiesen, 91, will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, September 17, 2010 in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Hartsville. The Rev. Charles Roberts and the Rev. Monell Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Chapel following the service. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Anne was born in the township of Steer Pen, SC to the late Alva Edison and Louise Sumner Tarte. A long time Hartsville resident, she had been living with her daughter and son-in-law in Sandy Run for the last four years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hartsville in which she was baptized, married and served as a church librarian. She graduated from Coker College and received her Masters in Library Science from the University of South Carolina. She worked in the education systems of South Carolina, Maryland, and Ohio as a teacher and librarian. Surviving are her daughters and son-in-laws, Marilee and Kenneth Willis, Sr. of Sandy Run, SC and Nita (Sheli) and Joseph Williams of Orlando, FL; grandchildren and spouses, Kenneth and Sheila Willis, Jr., Bonnie and Brandon Arvay, William and Michelle Willis; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Willis, Tyler Willis, Lauren Willis, and Corbin Willis. The family would especially like to thank the wonderful caregivers with Tri County Hospice of Orangeburg and Daybreak for their loving and professional services.

Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of Willie Eddie and Viola Catoe Floyd. He was a member of College Acres Baptist Church. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Adam Robert and Michelle Dietz of Wilmington, NC; daughter, Melissa Ann Floyd of Wilmington, NC; sister, Brenda Floyd of Hartsville, SC; sister-in-law, Eula Floyd of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Davin Dietz, Kaiden Dietz. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward Floyd and John Floyd.

Mamie Atkinson King

The family will receive friends Monday, September 20, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. King, widow of George B. King, Sr., died Saturday, September 18, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Walter Herbert and Florence Elmore Atkinson. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and was engaged in farming. Surviving are her son, George (Buck) King of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and James Reynolds of Hartsville, SC; grandson and spouse, Claude Richard "Dick" and Kelly Lloyd, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; great-grandchild, Paisley Caroline Lloyd. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Aline Atkinson and Virginia Hendrix.

He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. as a truck driver with 27 years of service and remained in the trucking business until his second retirement. He was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173, Scottish Rite and Omar Temple. John Flaherty

November 21st, 1925 - September 27th, 2010

Mr. John W. Flaherty, 84, beloved husband, father and brother, died September 27, 2010 in Hartsville, SC. John was born November 21, 1925, a son of John L. and Mary Robinson Flaherty, in Pittsburgh, PA. John is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Nellie Harrison Flaherty; daughters and son-in-law, Donna Lee (Frankie) Gardner, Susan Rhykerd; son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. (Betsy) Flaherty; sister, Patricia Driscoll; special niece, Eileen Crusan; grandchildren and souses, James (Laura) Cervi, Christine Cervi, Marie (Bryan) Fox, Christopher Flaherty Smith, Andi Elizabeth Rhykerd; great-grandhcildren, Jackson Cervi, Olivia Cervi, Kaitlyn Fox, Kendall Fox. He served proudly on the U.S.S. Tennessee during WWII, and was a member of the USS (BB43) Tennessee Reunion Association and a member of the American Legion. In April of this year he was privileged to visit the WWII monument in Washington , DC through the Rotary Flight of Honor program. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Watkins died Friday, October 15, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Major Aaron and Julia Mobley Watkins. He was a member of New Market United Methodist Church. He was the owner and operator of Lukie Used Cars for many years. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge, the Omar Shrine, the Loyal Order of the Moose, and the End Zone Foxes. He was an avid Gamecock fan and enjoyed any high school and college sport that has a ball named with it. He loved playing golf and going to the beach to ride in his golf cart. Surviving are his wife, Sue Clark Watkins of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Melanie Watkins of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Cody Watkins, Sarah Watkins. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Edward Watkins, J. B. Watkins, Lefty Major Watkins, John “Pokey” Watkins.
