Yvonne Traylor

NORTH AUGUSTA — Private Graveside Services for Mrs. Yvonne Traylor, 69, of North Augusta, SC, who died November 19, 2004, will be conducted in the Newberry Memorial Gardens, Newberry, SC.

Mrs. Traylor was a native of Spain, a former resident of Newberry, having made North Augusta her home for the past 5 years. She was of the Presbyterian faith, a retired teacher at the Clinton High School and an avid photographer and gardener.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Traylor; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Susan Traylor, Greensboro, North Carolina; two sisters, Rolanda Hartung and Susan Goetze both of Venezuela; one grandchild, Nicholas Traylor.

The family will receive friends at the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home Wednesday morning from 11 to 12 noon and at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry, SC from 4 to 5 o’clock.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a favorite charity or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1725, Augusta, Georgia 30903.

Addie Pope

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Addie Melton Pope, 80, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2004 at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ben Gafford will officiate with burial in Wesley Chapel UMC directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 21, 2004 from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550; Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence SC 29506; or Omar Shrine.

Mrs. Pope died Friday, November 19, 2004. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Lawrence and Ada Register Melton. She was a long time member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Dannie Newsome Circle, and the Adult Fellowship Sunday School class. She was past-president of the United Methodist Women and was retired from the Byerly Clinic.

Surviving are her husband, Lawrence D. “Larry” Pope of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Chris Pope of Hartsville, SC, Mike and Monnie Pope of Manning, SC; grandchildren, Hoyt Kelley, Candy Tidwell, Sherry Cottingham; great-grandson, Ethan Tidwell. She was preceded in death by her daughter, LaRaye Pope.

Linda Loftis

RED BANK — Services for Lula Athalinda Loftis, 73, will be held at 11am Tuesday in South Lexington Baptist Church, conducted by Reverend Robert Jumper and Reverend Gary Farmer. Burial will follow at 3pm Tuesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Greenville, SC. Memorials may be made to South Lexington Baptist Church, 116 Brevard Pkwy., Lexington, SC 29073. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, SC.

Mrs. Loftis died Saturday, November 20, 2004. Born in Six Mile, SC, she was a daughter of Pearl Elizabeth Smith Holliday and the late James Luther Holliday. Formerly of Gastonia, NC, she had been an area resident since 1998. Mrs. Loftis was retired from the Gaston County School District. She was a member of South Lexington Baptist Church.

Surviving are her mother, Pearl Holliday of Six Mile, SC; husband, Earl Loftis of Red Bank, SC; daughter, Elizabeth Hope Loftis of Gastonia, NC; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Clayton and Brenda Loftis of Lexington, SC, John Bruce Loftis of Seattle, WA, Clarence Earl Loftis, Jr. and Tammy Loftis of Irmo, SC, Gregory Christopher and Ranelle Loftis of Eatonville, WA; sisters, Doris Elizabeth Holliday Deadwyler of Covington, GA and Sarah Clark of Six Mile, SC; brother, Charles Tilton Holliday of Six Mile, SC; 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Katrina Hope Loftis.

Myrtle Garvin

KITCHINGS MILL — Mrs. Myrtle Heath Garvin, 80, entered into rest Sunday November 21st .

Mrs. Garvin was born in Aiken County. She was the daughter of the late Portman and Dora Owens Heath. Mrs. Garvin was the beloved wife of the late Ray P. Garvin and also preceded in death by son, Gene Garvin, sister, Helen H. Huff, and brothers, Randolph, Harry, Edgar, Haskell, Jessie, and Robert Heath. Mrs. Garvin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wagener.

Mrs. Garvin is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Merry Beth Garvin of Kitchings Mill, daughter-in-law, Pam Garvin of Wagener, grandchildren, Tom R. Garvin II and wife, Stacy of Springfield, Rae Leigh Garvin Warner and husband, Kevin of Kitchings Mill, Gregg Garvin of Columbia, Chad and Troy Carpenter of Wagener, great-grandchildren, Trent, Catherine and Megan Garvin, brother-in-law, Edwin Garvin of Aiken and sister-in-law, Virginia Thomas of Walterboro and special friend, Toni Beam.

The family of Mrs. Garvin expresses their sincerest thanks to the staff of Pepper Hill Nursing Center for their devoted and loving care.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 23rd from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Wagener Chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home, 163 South Main St, Wagener (803) 564-5333. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Family Life Center P.O. Box 398 Wagener, S.C. 29164. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 24th at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wagener. Burial will be in the Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. David Robinson will officiate.

E.P. Ellis Jr.

HAMPTON — Mr. Edgar Priester “E.P.” Ellis, Jr., 81, of 202 Harriet St. in Hampton, died Sunday evening in the Providence Hospital in Columbia after an extended illness.

Born July 8, 1923, in Scotia, SC, he was the son of the late Edgar Priester Ellis, Sr. and Rosa Peeples Ellis.

Mr. Ellis graduated from Hampton High School in 1940 and attended the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the first Naval ROTC class. He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII and was given veteran status as a Lt. Senior Grade.

After the war, he returned to Hampton and started the Ellis Realty & Insurance Agency which he operated until his retirement in 1985. He was very active civically, including serving as an ex-officio member of the USC Gamecock Club Executive Committee until his death. He was president of the SC Chamber of Commerce in 1957 and also served as president of the Hampton Lions Club, the Hampton Jaycees and was a Past Chairman of the Hampton County Watermelon Festival. He also served on the Hampton County Development Board, the Hampton County Crippled Children’s Society and the SC Mental Health Board. He was a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marie Sullenger Ellis of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: William Henry Ellis and Mary Mullikin Ellis of Columbia, Lee Patrick Ellis and Vivian Stout Ellis of Hampton; one daughter: Mary Rosa Ellis of Hampton and the delights of his life, his four grandchildren: Anne-Marie and John Priester Ellis of Columbia and Lee Patrick Ellis, II and Ansley Catherine Ellis of Hampton. He was predeceased by a son, Edgar Priester Ellis, III.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Hampton First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Greg Clements and Father Carl Bauer. Burial will follow in the Hampton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening and prior to 10 a.m. on Wednesday when the casket will be placed in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hampton County Gamecock Club, 701 First St. W., Hampton, SC 29924; First Baptist Church, 305 Oak St., Hampton, SC 29924; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Myra Poole

SALLEY — Mrs. Myra Louise Cooper Poole, 75, entered into rest Saturday November 27th, 2004. Mrs. Poole was born in Aiken County. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Lula Cooper Cooper. She was also preceded in death by her husband James Riley Poole and brother Otis Cooper. She was a member of Clinton United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Poole is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Jennie and Sammy Hydrick, Marie and David Malatesta, Libby and Don Callahan, son and daughter-in-law James Ray and Rhonda Poole, all of Salley, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sisters Mary Ellen Jeffcoat and Lula Bell Senn of Wagener, sisters and brothers-in-law Rachel and M. C. Poole of Perry, Katie Ruth and Larry Hamilton of Troy, N. C., brother and sister-in-law John R. and Hazel Cooper of Perry and Aunt Reba Ennis of Perry.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 28th from 6 to 8 p.m., Blizzard Funeral Home, 153 South Main St., Wagener, S.C. (803) 564-5333.

The Funeral Service will be Monday, November 29th at 4:00 p.m., Clinton United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Williamson officiating. Mrs. Poole will be placed in the church at 3:00 p.m.. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clinton United Methodist Church at 333 Hollow Creek Road, Salley, S.C. 29137 or the charity of choice.

Robert Sharpe

ANDERSON — Mr. Robert George Sharpe, Sr., age 85, of 1434 Wilderness Trail, Anderson, died Saturday, November 27, 2004 at Anderson Place.

Born in Abbeville County, S.C., he was a graduate of Clemson University where, as a non-scholarship walk-on, he made the football team becoming a three year starter at offensive center and defensive line-backer ultimately becoming captain of his team, and was named to the U.P.I. All-Bowl Team for his play in the 1940 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX. In later years he was honored with induction in both the Clemson University Athletic Hall of Fame and the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame of which he served as a director and past President. In the 100th year of Clemson Football (1896-1996), Bob Sharpe was voted the center-line backer on the one platoon centennial team.

Mr. Sharpe was the retired general manage of Wamsutta Mills in Anderson of which he supervised the construction and managed the operation for eighteen years, following many years of textile mill management for M. Lowenstein Corporation in Columbia, SC, Wilmington, NC, and Gaffney, SC.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, where he was a deacon, life elder, trustee, a teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, and a former moderator of the Piedmont Presbytery.

He was a Commissioner of Tri-County Technical College, serving as Chairman of the Finance Committee and Secretary-Treasurer of the Governing Board and where he received the Order of Trillion Award.

Active in many civic endeavors during his career, he was a member and past President of the Anderson Lions Club, having been honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow Award by Lions Club International Foundation, was the past Chairman of the United Way of Anderson, former trustee of Anderson County School District Five, was a board member emeritus of the Salvation Army, served on the board of Governors of Southern Textile Association, and served on the board of the Anderson Y.M.C.A., the Anderson-Oconee Vocational Rehabilitation Center, and the Greater Anderson Chamber of Commerce.

He was U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving over seas for 3 ˝ years, in the North African, Mediterranean and European Theatres of Operation with the rank of Major. He was awarded four Campaign Battle Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Croix de Guerre with Gold Star, one of the highest military decorations of the French Government award for exceptional war service rendered during the operations for the liberation of France.

Following his retirement, he did volunteer executive consulting work for the International Executive Service Corps in Third World and developing countries, assisting their industries in American Management Principles so as to improve their way of life and economic well being. He and his wife, Betty, successfully completed assignments in Lima Peru; Horonov, Czechoslovakia; Cairo, Egypt; and twice in Casablanca, Morocco.

He was the son of the late Milton Clyde Sharpe, Sr. and Elise Brownlee Sharpe, and was the husband of Betty Jones Sharpe.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Keith Sharpe.

Survivors in addition to his widow Betty Jones Sharpe are daughters, Ms. Melanie S. Covington of Anderson, Mrs. Nancy Nettles and her husband, Gene, of Spartanburg, and son, Robert G. Sharpe, Jr. and his wife, Sherry of Greenville. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, John Brownlee Sharpe of Anderson and Milton C. Sharpe, Jr. of Marietta, Georgia. Also surviving are four step children, John B. Jones of West Point, GA, Mrs. Jennifer Hair of Bladenboro, NC, Mrs. David (Nancy) McGregor of Anderson, and Reverend David Whitehill Jones of Brentwood, TN; eleven grandchildren: Keith, Robert and Julia, and Charlie Covington; Gene, Jr., Richard and Alise, Jamie and Sarah, and Irene Nettles; Emily Elise, Katie, Allison, and Julia Sharpe; and one great grandson, George Covington. Ten step-grandchildren, Jessica, Brett and Bunnie Jones; Erin and James Ben Daly; Drew and Ann McGregor; Cayla, Abbie, and Nathan Jones.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, all of whom are Eagle Scouts: Keith, Robbie and Charlie Covington, and Gene, Richard, and Jamie Nettles, James Keith and Lex Sharpe.

Honorary Escort will be the Session and Men’s Bible Class of the First Presbyterian Church and the Members of the Anderson Lions Club.

Following a private committal service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, a Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 29, 2004 at 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend David Whitehill Jones and Dr. B.E. Pettit officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Session Room.

The body is at The McDougald Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Sunday, November 28, 2004.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Ceramic Center, 302 West Whitner Street, Anderson, SC 29624, the Salvation Army, Post Office Box 43, Anderson, SC 29622 or to a Charity of One’s Choice.

The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, is in charge of the arrangements.
