Otis Brown
WATERLOO — Otis Brown, 75, of 1216 Relax Street, widower of Juanita Mullinax Brown, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late Julia Shirley and stepson of the late Dick Shirley. He was retired from Boren Clay Products in Spartanburg and was a US Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by a son, Otis Keely Brown, and by a stepson, Cecil W. “Billy” German.
Surviving are two sons, Arnold Albert Brown and Jerry Norman Brown, both of New York; three grandchildren, Eric Brown, Stephanie Brown and Kathy Brown and two step grandchildren, Ashley German and Derek German.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack King officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m.
It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to New Beginnings Baptist Church, Sirrene Drive, Waterloo, SC 29384.
Harley Funeral Home of Greenwood is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Bryant
LEESVILLE — Helen H. Bryant, 66, of 1277 Brodie Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Pierce Horne and Mattie Chaney Horne Burgess. She was a member of Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church and a weaver at J.B. Martins Co.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Bryant of Hudson, N.C., and Danny Bryant of Leesville; two daughters, Mrs. Scott (Deborah) Nelson of Lahaina, Hawaii and Windy Burns of Augusta, Ga.; three brothers, Bobby Horne of Leesville, Leonard Horne of Greenwood and Paul Horne of Saluda; four sisters, Ruth Dillard and Rebecca Hodges, both of Greenwood, Mary Hyler of Saluda and Sue Horne Padgett of Leesville; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 4 p.m. today at Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Boyd Arnold. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Justin Burns, Rebecca Burns, Melanie Risinger Bryant, Stephanie Risinger Bryant, Christie E. Bryant and Chris Risinger.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice Care, 111 Executive Point Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210.

Freddie Lee Cook
SAN FRANCISCO — Freddie Lee Cook, 56, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.
Born in Laurens County, S.C., he was a son of the late Ozzie and Agnes Anderson Cook. He was a former member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Waterloo, S.C., and a Vietnam War veteran. A construction worker, his last employment was with Laurens Textile Mills.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Steve Ray (Zandra) Campbell of Waterloo and Jackie Allen of Atlanta; four brothers, William Anderson of Estell, S.C., Ozzie Vance Cook Jr., John Wesley Cook and Lynn Dale Cook, all of Waterloo; four sisters, Edith Dowtin of Tampa, Fla., Estell Anderson, Beatrice Cook Yeldell and Sarah Cook, all of Greenwood, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
The family is at the home of his daughter Mrs. Steve (Zandra) Campbell, No. 10 Dog Patch, Waterloo.
Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Norma Elaine Cook
ABBEVILLE — Norma Elaine Cook, 61, resident of 1 Woodview Lane, Apt. 82 died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mercer County, NJ, she was the oldest daughter of the late William Henry Cook and Velma Wilson Cook. She was a 1960 graduate of Allentown, NJ and a 1963 graduate of Mercer Medical School of Nursing in Trenton, NJ where she became a registered nurse.
In 1982 Ms. Cook moved to SC where she became a very active member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Also, she was an active volunteer with the Piedmont Agency on Aging (formerly Abbeville Council on Aging).
Surviving Ms. Cook is her younger sister, Mrs. Thomas (Judith) Lawrence of Toms River, NJ, two brothers, William “Bill” Cook of N. Miami Beach, FL, and Mark W. Cook of Greenwood, SC; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews all of NJ.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27th from 1:00-2:30PM at Harris Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 3:00PM in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Clemons. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Norma E. Cook fund c/o Bank of Abbeville 203 S. Main St. Abbeville, SC 29620.

Bill Hodges
GREENWOOD — William Edward "Bill" Hodges, Sr., 74, resident of 506 Lowell Street, husband of Jimmie Lou Hall Hodges died September 24, 2003 at his home.
Born November 5, 1928 in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Sloan Edward and Grace Cobb Hodges. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, a US Airforce Veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Greenwood Mills Service Department.
Mr. Hodges was a member of Mathews United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Church Choir, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and was a former Chairman of Trustees of the church. He was a member and past president of the Saluda Sam Camping Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home is a daughter, Patti Hodges McClain of Greenwood, four sisters, Mrs. Rod (Mazie) Stroud, Mrs. Clyde (Nell) McAlister and Mrs. Edna Posey, all of Greenwood and Mrs. Sam (Lynn) Tanner of Monks Corner. One brother, Marshall Hodges. Five grandchildren, Trey Hodges, Sarah Hodges, Ashley Hodges, Shelli McClain and Chase McClain.
Mr. Hodges was predeceased by a son, Eddie Hodges and two sisters, Mrs. Nancy O'Dell and Mrs. Jean Speir.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday at Mathews United Methodist Church with Rev. Steven King, Rev. John Hipp and Rev. Harvey Peurifoy officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jeff O’Dell, Paul O’Dell, Brad O’Dell, David Rush, Darrell Rush, Daniel Rush and Dewight Stroud.
Honorary escort will be members of Mathews United Methodist Church Men’s Club and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class of the church.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 AM Saturday.
The family is at the home on Lowell Street and will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at the funeral home.

Danny Johnson
CROSS HILL — Danny Allen Johnson, 38, of Anglers Haven Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003.
Born in Decatur, Ala., he was a son of Billy R. and Martha Jean Fields Johnson. A graduate of Saluda High School, he served in the Air Force and was a self-employed marine technician.
Survivors include his parents of Greenwood; two sons, Taylor Johnson and Willie Johnson, both of Greenwood; and a brother, Timothy Hall Johnson of Beaufort.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Chestnut Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Saluda County, conducted by the Rev. Joe Turner.
Visitation is 7-8:30 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of his parents, 136 Valley Road, Spring Valley, Greenwood.

Lundy R. Lewis
LAURENS — Lundy Raymond Lewis, 71, of 1084 Metric Road, widower of Gladys Kennedy Lewis, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 at his home.
Born in Fort Benning, Ga., he was a son of the late John A. and Mary Crocker Lewis. He was a retired machinist of Byars Machine Shop, a member of Highland Home Baptist Church and a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include three sons, Lundy Michael Lewis of Mason, N.H., Stephen Boyd Lewis of Laurens and Joey Alan Lewis of Mars Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Kent (Donna) Day of Statesville, N.C.; three grandchildren, one of the home, Mrs. Chris (Jennifer Lewis) Posey; a great-grandson of the home, Christopher Lundy Posey; three brothers, James Lewis of Lakeland, Fla., Calvin Lewis of Greenwood and Roger Lewis of Augusta, Ga.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Home Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Jim H. Warren and Billy Cathcart. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Kennedy Mortuary.
The family is at the home.

Abie Ruth Lyons
ABBEVILLE — Abie Ruth Scovin Lyons, 75, widow of George Lyons Sr., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 at her home.
Born in Atlanta, she was a daughter of the late Abe and Estella Buford Scovin and was reared by her grandmother, the late Rebecca Fisher. She was a member of Glovers Chapel Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board and was past president of the Missionary Society and an usher. She was also a member of the Church Prayer Warriors and the Women’s Home Aide Society No. 77.
Survivors include three sons, George Lyons Jr. of the home, Elder Franklin Lyons and the Rev. Herman Lyons, both of Troy; four daughters, Eldora Foster, Rebecca White and Barbara Lyons, all of Abbeville and Tonia Moton of Greenwood; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home, 1711 Highway 28 S.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

Henry Hunter Watkins
GREENVILLE — Henry Hunter Watkins, 78, of 28 Forest View Drive, died September 24, 2003 at Homewood Residence.
Born in Greenwood on May 15, 1925, he was the son of the late William Paul and Genevieve Hunter Watkins. He was a graduate of the Citadel where he served as an officer on the battalion staff. He married Alice Bryson on March 9, 1946. Mr. Watkins was a Civil Engineer with J. E. Sirrine Co. from 1945 to 1963 and served as President of Hunter Watkins and Associates from 1963 until his retirement in 1991. An avid railroad historian and modeler, he was a member of the National Railway Historical Society and the National Model Railroad Association. He taught at Greenville Technical College and was past President of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers where he was awarded the Engineer of the Year award in 1981. He was also a member of the Western S.C. Torch Club, Greenville Citadel Club and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in several southern states and specialized in Structural and Forensic Engineering. Mr. Watkins was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church where he had served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Bryson Watkins of the home; a daughter, Susan Watkins Huffman of Greenville; two sons, Henry Hunter Watkins, Jr. of Greer and Thomas C. Watkins and his wife, Debbie, of Greer; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Paul Watkins, Jr. of Highlands, NC; a sister, Genevieve Watkins of Clinton, SC, and one grandson, Joe Parker, serving in the US Navy.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216 or United Ministries, 606 Pendleton Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home chapel on N. Main Street with visitation to follow. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home.

Sara E. Whitten
Sara E. Whitten, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Wesley Commons.
Born in Anderson, she was a daughter of the late Hollis A. and Bertha R. Whitten. She was of the Methodist faith.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. today at Wesley Commons.
Committal services are private.

Jason James “Bug” Ashley, Jr.
LEVEL LAND — Jason James "Bug" Ashley, Jr., 68, of 1736 Keowee Rd., Iva, SC died Monday, September 29, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was the son of the late Jason and Addie McClain Ashley.
Surviving Mr. Ashley are two sisters, Mrs. John (Gerri) Beauford of Abbeville, and Mrs. Bill (Caroline) Ellis of Antreville, one brother, James F. Ashley of Level Land, one niece, Jeanette Ellis of Abbeville, four nephews, Johnny Beauford of Abbeville, Ronnie Ashley, Donnie Ashley both of Level Land, and Mike Ellis of Marietta, GA.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 30th from 6:00-8:00PM at HARRIS FUNERAL HOME. Funeral Services will be 11:00AM Wednesday, October 1st at Little River Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Frankie McClain and Dr. Bob Miller. Mr. Ashley will be placed in the church 1 hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Little River Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2847 Keowee Rd., Honea Path, SC 29654. The family will be at the home of James F. Ashley of Level Land.

Mae Eliassen
Mae Entress Eliassen, 83, of Forest Hills, widow of Verner I. Eliassen, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at her home.
Born in Queens, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Reinhart and Augusta Pilger Entress. She was a graduate of John Adams High School, Queens and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Hofstra University, Long Island, N.Y. She retired as a second grade schoolteacher from South Huntington Elementary School, South Huntington, N.Y.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara E. Sthare, with whom she made her home and three grandchildren.
Graveside services are 3:30 Thursday in Ivandell Cemetery, Somers, N.Y.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
Blyth Funeral Home is in charge.
