Steven J. Fortunes, 32, of 224 Lakeshore Drive, husband of Jennifer White Fortunes, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.
Born in Wake County, N.C., he was a son of James and Ramona Garcia Fortunes. He was employed by Tidewater Transit and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife of the home; parents of Fuquay-Varnia, N.C. and a sister, Dina Senecal of Knightdale, N.C.
Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at McIntosh Family Cemetery, South Newport, Ga., conducted by the Rev. David Riddle.
Visitation is 6-8 Monday at the home, 224 Lakeshore Drive.

Edith Shrine Gable
McCORMICK — Edith Shrine Gable, 81, widow of Josheph “Lee” Gable, died Saturday, Oct, 18, 2003 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Born in McCormick County, she was a daughter of the late George and Maggie Medlock Shrine. She was retired from McCormick Mill and was a member of Plum Branch Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Lee Gable, George Gable and Wayne Gable, all of McCormick; four daughters, Mary G. Edmunds of McCormick, Betty G. Brock and Joyce G. Martin, both of Greenwood and Linda G. Hays of Elberton, Ga.; two brothers, George Shrine Jr. of McCormick and Lonnie Shrine of Fort Mill, SC; two sisters, Pauline S. Wilkie of Plum Branch and Doris S. Quarles of Greenwood; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Plum Branch Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. C.B. Love. Burial is at the Plum Branch Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Mary G. Edmunds.

Sara Howle Smalley
MODOC — Sara Howle Smalley, 80, of P.O. Box 21, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 at her home.
Born in Modoc, she was a daughter of the late Tillman and Annie Shelton Howle. She was retired from Talmadge Manufacturing and was a member of Modoc Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Smalley.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Modoc Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Don Sebastian.
Visitation was 7-9 Saturday at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Woody Swindler
Waymon Waters “Woody” Swindler, 75, of 206 Ellis Drive, husband of Linda Chrisley Swindler, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late C.G. Swindler and Lena Miller Swindler Smith. He was a radioman in the Navy during WWII and was retired from Kirkland-Dixon as a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Michael Franks of California and David Franks of Wyoming; four daughters, Melinda Scott, Candy Attaway, Becky Dodgen, all of Greenwood and Melissa Campbell of Charleston; a sister, Gaynelle Fontaine of Jacksonville, Fla. and 13 grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Ron Taylor.
Pallbearers are John Langley, L.T. Lowe, Charles Murphy, Steve Fleming, Robbie Attaway, and Lloyd Tankersley.
Honorary escorts are Dr. Ricky Bair, Richard Scott and Ricky Turner.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew (Melinda) Scott, 418 Abbott Ave., Greenwood.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.

Loree Kelley Wells
LINCOLNTON, Ga. — Loree Kelley Wells, 88, of 2352 Reed Road, widow of Jerry M. Wells, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 at an Augusta hospital.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late William T. Kelley and Ruth Dozier Kelley. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances W. Dishroom, Cumming, Ga.; two sons, Gary Wells and Alton “Bubba” Wells, both of Lincolnton; a stepson, J.M. Wells Jr. of Lincolnton; a sister, Littie Bilbo, Peachtree, Ga.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Lincolnton City Cemetery, conducted by the Revs. Allen Danner, Phillip Kinney and Darrell Engle.
Beggs Funeral Home is in charge.

George Erneston Sr.
George Erneston Sr., 77, of 1111 Cornelia Circle, husband of Charlotte Christian Erneston, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Salisbury, N.C., he was a son of the late Gus and Denay Erneston. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, a World War II Navy veteran and a retired service manager of Toyota of Greenwood. A former Cub Scout Master, he was a member of the American Legion and the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, George Erneston Jr. of Atlanta, Dr. Andrew Erneston of Lake Charles, La., and Anthony Erneston of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Mary Savvas of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, conducted by Bishop William Beckom and the Rev. Peter Hawes. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are George Jr., Andrew, Anthony, Glenn and James Nicholas Erneston, Harold Tolbert, Marlin Minor and Irving Seigler.
Honorary pallbearers are Gene Pinson, Jack Bagwell, Ralph Mathis, Emmett Brooks, Louden Brooks, Bill Culbertson, Jack Alexander, Heyward Stroud, George Jones, Randolph Kizer and Bob Trammell. Visitation is 7-8:30 Friday at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Green Felts Jr.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Green Franklin “Bobby” Felts Jr., 82, of 6702 N.W. 27th Terrace, husband of Sarah Rivera Felts, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.
Born in Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of the late Green Franklin Felts Sr. and Katie Evans Felts. He was a graduate of Brewer High School, Greenwood and a World War II Army veteran. Retired from the New York Transit Authority, he was a member and deacon of Mount Carmen Baptist Church, Gainesville and a member of the Chancel Gospel Choir.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, John Felts of Fort Myers and William “Franky” Felts of Hephzibah, Ga.; two daughters, Pamela Anderson and Kathleen Austin, both of Greenwood; a brother, George “Buck” Felts of Philadelphia; a sister, Annie K. Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Gainesville Church of God.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at The Chestnut Funeral Home.

Thomas Lewis Fuller, husband of Sheryl Fuller, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
The family is at the home of his mother, Pearl Griffin, 213 Tompkins St.

GNINETY SIX — Helen Ruth Sullivan Jones, 78, of 6713 Bolts Circle, widow of John Wesley Jones, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at National Healthcare of Greenwood.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Butler & Sons Funeral Home, Saluda.

Eva ‘Duddie’ Maddox
CALHOUN FALLS — Eva Azalee “Duddie” Maddox, 91, of 505 Marion St., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003 at Spring Valley Health Care Center in Elberton, Ga.
A native of Elbert County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Oscar Furloe and Hattie Broome Maddox. She was a retired weaver of the Calhoun Textile Plant and a member of Northside Baptist Church with 46 years of perfect attendance and a teacher in the children’s Sunday School for 60 years. She was Past Worthy Grand Matron of the Calhoun Falls Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a brother, Calvin Maddox of Saluda; a sister, Grace M. Thompson of Anderson. Visitation is 1-2 Friday at Calhoun Falls Funeral Home. Cryptside services are after the visitation in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by Dr. Ray Simpson and the Rev. Joseph Outz.
Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, in memory of Azalee Maddox, Calhoun Falls.

Johnny Lee Mitchell
Johnny Lee “Possum” Mitchell, 47, of 521 Liner St., died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003 at his home.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of Annie Lee Mitchell and the late A.C. Davis. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Willow Springs Baptist Church, Edgefield. He attended Greenwood High School and was employed by the S.C. Highway Department.
Survivors include his mother of Greenwood.
The family is at the home of an aunt, Ada Bell Mathis, 718 Monument St.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc.

George McDonald Sr.
CLARKS HILL — George J. McDonald Sr., 68, of Lost Wilderness, husband of Ruby Flake McDonald, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at his home.
Born in Troy, N.Y., he was a son of the late George and Mary O’Brian McDonald. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and retired from the Corps of Engineers. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife of Clarks Hill; three sons, Willie McDonald of Vermont, Michael McDonald of Parksville and George J. McDonald of Clarks Hill; two daughters, Delores Albert of Leesville and Brenda Tant of Clarks Hill; two brothers; a sister; and 16 grandchildren.
Burial is private.
Visitation is at the home.

Mary Frances Patton
WATERLOO — Mary Frances Shaw Patton, 65, wife of Jimmy L. Patton, of 7153 Indian Mound Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003 at her home.
Born in Floyd County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Ellis Jackson and Hattie Mae Yarborough Shaw. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and retired from The Whitten Center.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, Jimmy Patton of Midway, N.C., Jerry Patton of Mocksville, N.C., James Henry Patton II and John Ellis Patton, both of Waterloo; four daughters, Judy Jacobs and Mary Lynn Smith, both of Adairsville, Ga., Judy Ann Elledge of Ware Shoals and Frances Diane Patton of Waterloo; two brothers, Jimmy Shaw of Rome, Ga., and Bobby Shaw of Smyrna, Ga.; two sisters, Rebecca Culbertson of Rome, Ga., and Margaret Cleary of Sugar Valley, Ga.; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Parker-White Funeral Home, Ware Shoals. Services are also Sunday in Adairsville, with burial in Midway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Louise Coates Reed
Louise Coates Reed, 84, of 912 Taggart Ave., widow of Lawrence Reed Sr., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003 at her home after an extended illness.
Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Paris and Mattie Savage Coates. She was a homemaker, a former member of Young Mount Zion Baptist Church, Saluda and a member of Crossroad Baptist Church, Promised Land, Greenwood County.
Survivors include a son, Willie Edward Coates of Boston; seven daughters, Elease C. Williams of Troy, Mrs. Willie (Peggy A.) Carroll and Mrs. Edmond (Brenda) Wright, both of Bradley, Mrs. Charlie (Joyce) Henderson and Mrs. Willie James (Diane) Smith, both of Greenwood, Virginia Reed and Carolyn Reed, both of the home; a sister, Mrs. Leroy (Willie Lee) Wilson of Hodges; a grandson of the home, Travis Reed; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced by Robinson & Son Mortuary.
