Luther Coleman
ABBEVILLE — Luther Coleman, 98, of 39 Kingdom Hall Drive, husband of Yvonne Coleman, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 at his home.
Born in Baskerville, Va., he was a son of the late Willis and Pat Smith Coleman. He was educated in Baskerville public schools and retired from the Transport of New Jersey after 33 years of service. He was a Jehovah’s Witness since 1951.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two stepchildren, Earl Rush and Phyllis L. Rush of New Jersey; a foster son, Michael Moore of New Jersey; two step-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall, conducted by Brother Anthony Davis, assisted by Brother Randall Kidd. The body will be placed in the hall at 1.
Viewing is 1-8 p.m. Friday at Richie Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Benjamin Crawford Sr.
ABBEVILLE — Benjamin Crawford Sr., 88, of 206 Whitehall St., widower of Sarah H. Crawford and Clara M. Crawford, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at his home.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late David and Nancy Cowin Crawford. He was educated in the public school system and retired from Seaboard Railroad. A member of Glover’s Chapel Baptist Church, he was a deacon and the church father. He was also a member of Lodge 161 and the Sons of Aid Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Rubye Hughey of Greenwood, Endia Waller of Abbeville and Mrs. Rodney (Fannie) Johnson of Philadelphia; a son, David Crawford of Abbeville; three nieces reared in the home, Mae Williams of Chicago, Rose Carter of Philadelphia and Willie Daniels of Greenville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Glover’s Chapel Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. M.L. Taylor. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Viewing is 10 a.m.-8 Friday at Richie Funeral Home.
Visitation is at the home.

Kenosha Gadson-Greene
WEST COLUMBIA — Kenosha Aquan Gadson-Greene, 8, of 2160 Pine St., Lot 2, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at the Medical College of Charleston.
Born in Baltimore, she was a daughter of Dexter and Vondra Gadson Greene. She was a third grade student at South Congaree Elementary School.
Survivors include her parents of West Columbia; a sister, Sanaa Nykol Greene of West Columbia; paternal grandparents, William and Gelena Bosket of Saluda; maternal grandmother, Alvetta Gadson of West Columbia; maternal grandfather, Samuel L. Wise of Baltimore; paternal great-grandmother, Ida Bosket of Saluda; maternal great-grandmothers, Mary Gadson of Winnsboro and Lula M. Wise of Columbia.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Saluda, conducted by the Rev. Calvin Robinson, pastor. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers are cousins.
The family is at the home and at the home of paternal grandparents, William and Gelena Bosket, 105 Maple St., Saluda. Butler & Sons Funeral Home, Saluda, is in charge.

Howard Earl Gray
ABBEVILLE — Howard Earl Gray, 51, of 1797 Secession St. Extension, husband of Annie Moore Gray, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late Howard and Willie Ruth Harkness Gray. He was a retired employee of Pirelli Cable, a 1970 graduate of J.S. Wright High School and a member of the Long Cane Fire Department. He was a former member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Vanessa Michele Gray of the home; a son, Kovie T. Gray of the home; three sisters, Georgia A. Thomas and Kathy E. Murray, both of Abbeville and Subrenna A. Tymes of Atlanta; three brothers, James A. Howard of North Carolina, Larry Gray and Ralph Gray, both of Abbeville; a grandchild.
The family is at the home.
Services will be announced by Brown and Walker Funeral Home.

Neil Wideman, Jr.
Services for Neil Wideman Jr. are at noon Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Willie S. Harrison, assisted by the Revs. Ivory Goodwin and Emanuel Spearman. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.
Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons.
Flower bearers are granddaughters.
Visitation is 7-8 Friday at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.
The family is at the home, 827 E. Cambridge Ave.

Fred S. (Schump) Coleman
SALUDA — Fred Schumpert (Schump) Coleman, 75, of 199 Andrew Coleman Road, died Wednesday evening, October 29, 2003, after a short illness.
Mr. Coleman was born in Saluda County to the late Fred Schumpert (Bub) and Mattie Belle Perry Coleman. He attended Saluda High School and was a member of the 1941 State Champion Football Team. In 1944, at age 16, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the Destroyer, U.S.S. Power, during World War II. He worked many years with the Monsanto Co. in Greenwood, SC as an electrician and retired from there with Daniel Construction Co. in 1922. He also owned and operated Ace Kar Kare in Saluda.
Mr. Coleman was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He particularly enjoyed quail hunting and crappie fishing. He was an excellent gardener and during the late 1970's, he and his late wife started one of the first operations in S.C. to produce hygroponically-grown tomatoes. He enjoyed his family and sharing his knowledge of family ties and history. Beneath his sometimes gruff demeanor, he was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Mr. Coleman is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John (Bubby) and Wanda Coleman, Gerry and Vivian Coleman of Saluda; Daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Kenny Hall of West Columbia; grandchildren; Steven Coleman, Paul Coleman, Brittany Coleman, Layla Coleman and Sarah Coleman; special pals, Rudy Scott and "Tugger".
Mr. Coleman was predeceased by his loving wife, Freddie Mae, brother, Harold J. Coleman and sister, Doris Ringer.
Services will be held at 11AM, Saturday, November 1, 2003, at Butler Methodist Church in Saluda with Burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Fred Treaster and Pastor Ed Wolff will lead the service. Ramey Funeral Home of Saluda will be in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 7 to 9PM at Ramey Funeral Home in Saluda.
Memorials may be made to the Butler Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or to a charity of one's choice. P

Marian Leake Harris
GREENWOOD — Marian Leake Harris, 77, of Greenwood, SC, died in her home on Thursday, October 30, 2003. Born in Greenville, SC, she was a daughter of the late George and Gertrude Peace Leake. She attended Greenville High School and was a 1947 graduate of Randolph-Macon Women's College. She was active in many social and civic organizations, including Self Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, the Holly Garden Club and The Greenwood Museum.
Mrs. Harris contributed to many charitable and philanthropic organizations such as Brookgreen Gardens, The Greenwood Museum, Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Clemson University, SC Governor's School of the Arts and Greenwood Christian School. She was a major benefactor to the SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation, where she served on the board of directors. She was a member of the Greenwood Country Club Women's Golf Association, where she was a 12 time Club Champion. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sister, Genevieve Sakas of Greenville; her husband of 37 years, John B. Harris Jr. of Greenwood; three sons, John B. Harris III of Georgetown, George H. Harris of Greenwood and Roger P. Harris of Greenville; a daughter, Marian H. Moore of Irmo; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be private.
The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted and contributions made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 211 N. Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation, 900 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Lee Mabry
Annie Lee Harrison Mabry, 71, of 204 Annetteway, widower of Allan Mabry, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late David and Lula Stokes Harrison. She was a member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church, where she served with the Pastors Aid Ministry.
Survivors include a son, Allen David Mabry of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Peggy Lee Pessu of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Sherry Wideman of Greenwood; a sister, Katherine Bradshaw of Greenwood; four grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter, 102 Annetteway, Highland Forest Subdivision.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home.

John Oscar Smith
SALUDA — John Oscar Smith, 68, formerly of 122 Perry Drive, husband of Corine Brown Smith, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Eddie Richard and Elizabeth Abney Smith. He was a member of Lockhart Baptist Church, the Senior Choir of the church, the Sons of Aide and Pearl Chapel Masonic Lodge No. 118. He retired from Cromley’s Ford, where he did car detailing for many years.
Survivors include his wife of Saluda Nursing Center; a daughter, Betty Dobbs of Saluda; three sons, Bobby Robinson of Ridge Spring, Johnny Mack Smith of Saluda and Maxie Smith of Newberry; four sisters, Willie Mae Chapman of Augusta, Ga., Emma Smart of Columbia, Tillie Smalls of Saluda and Cornelia Townsend of Long Island, N.Y.; a brother, James A. Smith of New Haven, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Lockhart Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Herman Jenkins, pastor. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are members of Pearl Chapel Masonic Lodge No. 118.
Flower bearers are granddaughters and nieces.
The family is at the home of a niece, Mrs. Burder Nixon, 118 Pringle St.

Leslie Barger Jr.
Leslie Morice Barger Jr., 64, of 105 Montclair Drive, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at VA Medical Center, Augusta, Ga.
Born in Roanoke, Va., he was a son of the late Leslie M. and Margaret Victoria Martin Barger. He was retired from Allied Steel, Tampa, Fla., a Vietnam Army Veteran and a member of First Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah B. Burnette of Greenwood, Tina Barger Nichols of Mountville and Linda Ann Jones of Greenwood; three sons, Leslie Michael Barger of Mountville, Billy Ray Barger and Herbert Jonathan Barger, both of Hodges; a sister, Ellen Bingham of Texas ; a brother, George Barger of Texas ; and 11 grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. David Milcher. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Charles, Leonard, and Prince Yates, Dewey Harling, Rusty and Russell Marshall.
Visitation is 12-1:30 Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of his son, Herbert Barger, 606 Morgan Road, Hodges.

Gwen Conner
NORTH AUGUSTA — Gwendoline Vanadore Conner, 82, formerly of 252 Bobwhite Drive, Waterloo, widow of Herman Conner, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at Anna Marie Nursing Center.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Pearl Rhodes Vanadore. She was retired from the Mathews Plant of Greenwood Mills and a member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Dancy Golden of Greenwood; three sisters, Mary McAbee of Enoree, Mrs. Roy Smith and Kay Finkenstadt of Greenwood; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials services are 11 a.m. Monday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Hodges.
The family is at the home of her daughter, 751 E. Northside Drive, Georgetown Apts. No. 4, Greenwood.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Upstate Chapter, 521 North McDuffie St., Anderson, S.C. 29621-5528.

Leroy H. Mattison
WARE SHOALS — Leroy H. Mattison, 80, of 94 Green Acres Drive Ext., died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late James Homer and Lillie Hedden Mattison. He worked for Riegel Textile Corp. for 30 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a Navy veteran of WW II, a member of First Baptist Church and a 50 year member of Ware Shoals Masonic Lodge No. 306. He was twice married, first to the late Mildred Looney Mattison and second to Connie Raines Willard Mattison.
Survivors include two sons, Michael L. Mattison of Ware Shoals and Kenneth R. Mattison of Greenwood; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Robert Emory and Curt Eidson. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Fred Mattison Jr., Jerry Mattison, James Mattison, David Mattison, Brian Looney, Jim Luker and Danny Ray Abercrombie.
Visitation is 6-8 today at Parker-White Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

HODGES — Mack Fisher McJunkin, 65, of 4521 Main St., husband of Sarah Davis McJunkin, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at Medical College of Georgia.
