George Chapman
SALUDA — George Allen “Pudge” Chapman, 39, of 123 Simmons Road, husband of Mary Turner Chapman, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born in Ankara, Turkey, he was a son of William Franklin “Coon” and Martha Nell Wells Chapman. He was an employee of Solutia Inc. and a member of the LDI Spinning Team. He served in the Marine Corps for 10 years, attaining the rank of lance corporal. He was a member of Saluda Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents of Saluda; his wife of Saluda; a stepdaughter, Deedra Billings of Saluda; two brothers, Tim Chapman of Little Mountain and Kenneth Chapman of Leesville; a sister, Kim C. Harmstad of Greenville.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Saluda Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Norman Rogers and Mayhew West. Burial is in Travis Park Cemetery.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Saluda Baptist Church, 112 W. Wheeler Circle, Saluda, SC 29138.

R. Nelson (Chip) Crowe
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — R. Nelson (Chip) Crowe, retired architect of Briarcliffe Acres, died Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
He was born November 19, 1924 the son of Rossie and Mary Nelson Crowe in Greenwood, SC. Two brothers, Roy C. Crowe of New York and Jack Crowe of Greenwood, SC predeceased him.
He attended Greenwood City Schools and was graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Architecture. He practiced architecture in Columbia and later in Myrtle Beach for many years. World War II inter-rupted his college years. He enlisted in the US Naval Air Corps on his eighteenth birthday, after one semester at Clemson. While going through primary flight training at Naval Air Station in Memphis, TN he rose through the ranks to become the highest-ranking cadet in the country. He received his Navy Wings and served as a pilot aboard an aircraft carrier. Mr. Crowe was a charter member and the first choir director at Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach.
Chip is survived by his wife, Margie Seigler and his two sons, Rocke C. Crowe and his wife, LaNette of Charlotte, NC and Roger W. Crowe and his wife, Kathy Ann of Liberty, SC and their two sons, Wylie and Bailey. Other survivors include his aunts, Elizabeth Faulkner and Hazel Nelson of Greenwood, SC, a cousin, Ann Bonnette, also of Greenwood. Other survivors include, cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hightower, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Miller and Mr. and Mrs. George Fluery of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his nieces, Beth Terry of Myrtle Beach and Rebecca Dutton of FL, his brother-in-law, Thomas G. Seigler and wife, Berta of Florence, SC, niece, Kim Turbeville and her family of Florence, SC, nephew, Ronald Seigler and his family of Florence, SC and nephew, Robert Seigler and his family of Hendersonville, NC.
A memorial service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC with the Rev. Steve Cromer officiating. Burial services will be private.
The family will receive friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Friday, November 14, 2003 from 5:00-7:00 pm.

Herbert J. Cromer
Herbert J. Cromer, 88, formerly of 313 Virginia Ave., widower of Lois Shidle Cromer, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 at Wesley Commons.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late W.C. and Sally Dominick Cromer. Owner of Cromer’s Cash Grocery, he retired from Greenwood Mills, Durst Plant and was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church. He was twice married, first to the late Dianna Roberts Cromer.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Grace Mitchell of Ninety Six; two stepsons, James Howard Shidle of Greenwood and Burl A. Shidle of Saluda; a sister, Sarah Dalton of Hodges; and three foster children, Pam Cromer of Saluda, Louise Brown and George Richardson, both of Ninety Six.
Services are 3 p.m. Friday at Harley Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Henry Schwarzmann and Charles Owens. Burial is in Troy Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ronnie Ethridge, Larry Ethridge, Carroll Ethridge, Daniel Mitchell, Travis Mitchell and Neal Shidle.
Visitation is 2-3 Friday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of his stepdaughter, Grace Mitchell, 121 Aiton Drive, Ninety Six.

Frank Pittman
CROSS HILL — Frank Pittman, 83, widower of Myrtle Greene Pittman, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 at National Health Care of Clinton.
Born in Tigerville, he was a son of the late Milton and Hattie Pittman. He was a retired auto mechanic and a member and former deacon of Cross Hill First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Harold C. Pittman of Baton Rouge, La.; a daughter, Joyce Livingston of Cross Hill; four brothers, Fred Pittman, Bud Pittman, Leon Pittman, Carl Pittman, all of Tigerville; a sister, Annie Mae Pittman of Tigerville; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday in Cross Hill First Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 1-2 Friday at the church.

J. Howard Quarles
TWIN CITY, Ga. — J. Howard Quarles, 86, widower of Lou Rhoden Quarles, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003 at his home after an extended illness.
A son of the late John W. and Fannie Joe Strom Quarles, he grew up in Edgefield, S.C. He served in the armed forces during World War II and was part of the Army landing on Normandy Beach. Co-founder of Twin City Manufacturing Co., he was president from 1946 until retiring in 1991 and was former mayor of Twin City. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church and Calvary Men’s Sunday School Class and a former church treasurer. He was on the Board of Directors at Durden Banking Co., a charter member of Twin City Lions Club, a Mason and a Shriner. Former director of the Emanuel Medical Center, he was a past member of Emanuel County Development Authority and past president of the Twin City Development Authority.
Survivors include three sisters, Sara Coleman of Pacolet, S.C., Ruth Hair of Greenwood, S.C., and Martha Pearl Quarles of Edgefield, S.C.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Twin City First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Sasser and Elder Tommy Rountree. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial is 4 p.m. in Eastview Cemetery, Edgefield.
Pallbearers are Lee Rountree, Wayne Collins, Clarke Dixon, Shane Scarboro, Tommy Durden, Rusty Simmons and Andy Walden. Honorary pallbearers are the Calvary Men’s Sunday School Class, deacons of the church, Durden Banking Co. Board of Directors, Alton Simmons, Tim Cockfield and Toby Wells.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to Twin City First Baptist Church or United Hospice.

Services for Andrew “Pop” Williams Jr., of 504 W. Kirksey Drive, Mathew Village, are 2 p.m. Saturday at Bailey Bethel A.M.E. Church, McCormick, with the Rev. J.W. Paul, pastor, presiding, Bishop Emanuel Spearman officiating and the Rev. Wilbert Simpson, assisting. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Carl Moss, Calvin “Tab” Dunlap, Roy Parks Jr., Clarence Gilliam, Richard Burton and nephews.
Flower bearers are Ann Anderson, Laura Mae Sprowl, Nikita Sprowl, Shameka Searles, Sandra Bowman and Cleo Williams.
Honorary escorts are frequent visitors and friends of Li’l Cricket, East Cambridge Avenue.
Visitation is Friday evening at the home.

Betty Jean Cannon
NINETY SIX — Betty Jean Meeks Cannon, 67, of 8 Blake Road, widow of Carl E. Cannon, died Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at her home.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late B. L. and Blanche Armstrong Meeks. She was retired from Greenwood Mills, Executive Office and was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne Cannon.
Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Rocky Miller of Ninety Six and a special friend, Ray Butler of Bradley.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cambridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joey McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Goodman, Shelton Cromer, Tommy Balchin, Hiram Mitchell, Neil Lomax and Hebron Ouzts.
Honorary escort will be members of the choir of Cambridge United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Carl Gilman
GREENWOOD — Carl Edward Gilman, 83, resident of 121 Calhoun Rd. E., widower of Bertha H. "Bert" Merritt Gilman died November 19, 2003 at his home.
Born in Reading, MA, November 18, 1920 he was a son of the late Edgar M. and Edith Biggs Gilman. He was a US Air Force Veteran of WW II and retired B.L.H. Electronics, Waltham, MA. Mr. Gilman had made his home in Greenwood since 1986.
He was a member of Old South United Methodist Church in Reading, MA and more recently attended Siloam Baptist Church in Ninety Six.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David and Anne Gilman of Greenwood, a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Mike Holsonback of Greenwood, four grandchildren, Scott Holsonback of Atlanta, Amy H. Hughes, Melissa and Andrew Gilman, all of Greenwood.
Mr. Gilman was predeceased by a brother, George Leslie Gilman of MA.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4pm Thursday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Crittendon officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be James Hughes, John Mark Scruggs, Gerald Brown and Jason Brooks.
The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home 3 to 4 Thursday afternoon.

GREENWOOD — Lorraine Page Varney Griffin, 83, of 164 Rutledge Road, wife of Francis "Frank" M. Griffin died November 18, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center. Mr. and Mrs. Griffin previously resided in White Plains, NY. Mr. & Mrs. Griffin would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in February.
Born in Queens, NY April 4, 1920, daughter of the late Rodney E. and Marion Carter Varney, she was a member of First Damascus Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are three daughters, Mrs. Arthur "Butch" (Frances) Ebert of Ninety Six, Mrs. Christopher (Jean) Lutz of Rochester Hills, MI and Ms. Lorraine Page Fiocco of Punta Gorda, FL. One sister, Mrs. Jean Varney Newby of Aiken, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2pm Friday at Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Carter and Rev. Billy Reynolds officiating.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Griffin, Chip Dellinger, Dwight Griffin, Abney Coleman, Sr., Abney Coleman, Jr., Donnie Justice and Larry Womack.
Honorary escort will be members of First Damascus Baptist Church along with Reba Higgins, Jake Penney, Senator John Drummond, Dr. Mark Robirds, Dr. Carlos Manalich, Dr. Larry Gluck, Dr. Michael Bryant, and Dr. Mims Mobley.
The family is at the home in Forest Hills and will receive friends from 7 to 9pm Thursday at Blyth Funeral Home.

GREENWOOD — Services for Link Sanders, of 1021 Brown Lane, Clayton, N.J., formerly of Greenwood County, are 1 p.m. today at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ulysses Parks.
Burial is in Young’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews and great-nephews.
Flower bearers are nieces and great-nieces.
Family members are at the homes of a brother, Booker T. Sanders, 110 Addison St. and a sister, Betty Wideman, 142 Russell St.

Mary Louise Stanton
McCORMICK — Mary Louise Stanton, 79, of 269 Fairway Drive, Savannah Lakes, widow of Elmer F. Stanton, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in White County, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Allen and Sarah Cunningham Davis. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include James P. Stanton of Detroit; a daughter, Jonny M. Taylor of McCormick; a brother, Robert C. Davis of Sparta, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Monday in White Chapel Cemetery, Detroit.
Visitation is 1-3 Friday at Strom Funeral Home, McCormick.
