Catherine P. Kapetanakos
PALM BEACH, FL — Catherine P. Kapetanakos, 93, formerly of Abbeville, wife of the late Charlie Kapetanakos died Sunday, Dec. 7th at a nursing home in Florida. She was born July 24, 1910 in Izmir, Turkey to the late John and Stella Psaltis. She came to the United States as an infant and lived in the New York area until marrying Charlie Kapetanakos and moved to Abbeville. She was involved in the operation of the Palmetto Cafe for 35 years in Abbeville and a member of The Greek Orthodox Church in Greenville.
Her daughter DenaFasul predeceased her. Surviving Mrs. Kapetanakos is her son, Peter Kapetanakos of Jonesboro, GA, two grandchildren, Marie Varvarikos, and Katina Fasul both of Palm Beach, FL, five great-grandchildren, John, Christina, Catherine, Matthew, and Stephen. The family will receive friends 1:00PM-2:00PM Friday, Dec. 12th at HARRIS FUNERAL HOME. Graveside services will be at 2:30PM in Long Cane Cemetery. Officiating the service will be Father Tom Pistolis of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Greenville.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 406 North Academy St., Greenville, SC 29601.

James Lawson
James William Lawson, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003.
Born in Pelion, he was a son of the late James Willie and Gertrude Bult Zeigler Lawson. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Andrews of Greenwood; four sons, Jerry William Lawson, Joey James Lawson, Grover Chadwick, all of Greenwood, Jimmy Lawson of West Columbia; four sisters, Alma Lawson, Retha Bates, both of West Columbia, Dean Hall Freeman of Columbia, “Midge” McCullough of Pelion; two brothers, Allen Lawson of Columbia, Dewey Lawson of Augusta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Harry Fryer. Burial is in Southland Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Cecil Lunsford
NICHOLSON, Ga. — Cecil Thomas Lunsford, 64, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Hill Haven Nursing Center in Commerce.
Born in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Lonnie and Annie Mae Hill McCollum Lunsford. He was a general manager for Varsity Restaurants in Atlanta and Athens for 41 years.
Survivors include four brothers, Ernest Lunsford, Jerry Lunsford, both of Carnesville, James Lunsford of Greenwood, S.C., Herman Lunsford of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Faye Brown of Franklin Springs, Mae Brown of Elberton.
Services are 4:30 p.m. today at the B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel, Carnesville. Burial is in Carey Memorial Gardens.
Family members are at their respective homes.
Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, is in charge.

Lela M. Ross
Lela Mae Ross, 83, of 113 Cole St., widow of Milton Ross, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at her home. Born in Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Ollie and Leola Brathet Payne. She was a member of Second Damascus Baptist Church, where she was former president of the Ushers Ministry and a member of the Missionary Society and Senior Choir. She was a retired employee of Frank and Mildred Whitt.
Survivors include a daughter, Janie Bell Lockhart of the home; a brother, Robert Payne of Greenwood; two grandchildren reared in the home, Patsy Hodges of Greenwood and Charles Lockhart of Aurora, Colo.; two great-grandchildren reared in the home, Zachary and Nicholas Hodges; three other grandchildren; a great-great-grandson.
Services are at noon Friday at Second Damascus Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leroy Robertson, assisted by the Revs. Arthur Kemp and Herry Mansel. The body will be placed in the church at 11. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are nephews, Dennis Whitt, Jerry Whitt, Craig Whitt, Donnie Underwood, Pete Rushton.
Flower bearers are nieces, Tammy Sampson, Ruby Stevens, Erika Stevens.
Visitation is at the home.
Parks Funeral Home is in charge.

Jeff Rushton
NINETY SIX - Charles Jeffery “Jeff” Rushton, 45, of 112 Kaye Drive, husband of Sarah Moore, died Tuesday, December 09, 2003 at his home.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Clem Richard and Sue Horne Rushton. He was employed by Dickert’s Moving and Storage and was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Rushton.
Surviving is his wife of the home; his parents of Ninety Six; a daughter, Carmen Justice of Greenwood; two stepsons, Lynn Griffin of Princeton and Gary Griffin of Hodges; a stepdaughter, Rene West of Hodges and two sisters, Gwen Goldman and Janice Rushton, both of Ninety Six.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Parris officiating. Burial will be Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Griffin, Gary Griffin, Kim Behlke, Johnny McCalla, Billy Graddick and Jerry Fortson.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Charles Y. Thomason, Jr.
GREENWOOD — Charles Young Thomason, Jr., 77, resident of 110 Meadowbrook Drive, husband of Gayle Hall Thomason, died December 9, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in West Point, GA, October 27, 1926, he was a son of the late Charles Young, Sr. and Rosalie Wells Thomason. He attended public schools in Greenwood and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in 1943. Mr. Thomason attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1943-1944 and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II having served with the 522nd Armored Engineers. Mr. Thomason held the positions of President and Vice-President of C. Y. Thomason Co., President of Construction Supply Corp., Vice-President of Port Royal Co., President of Bilbub, Inc. and was founder of Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head, SC.
A member and past board member of Main Street United Methodist Church, he also participated in numerous community organizations including the Y.M.C.A. Board and Greenwood County Planning Board.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of the home, a daughter, Kathryn Thomason Adels of Ninety Six; four sons, Charles Young Thomason, III of Atlanta, GA, Thomas A. Thomason of Hodges, J. Wells Thomason and Richard Hall Thomason, both of Greenwood; a sister, Suzanne Thomason Rowland of Greenwood; a brother, G. William Thomason of Greenwood; ten grandchildren, Charles Young Thomason, IV, William Phillip Lovoy, Nathalie Gayle Lovoy, Elizabeth Anne Lovoy, James Wells Thomason, Jr., Holley Katherine Thomason, Thomas O'Bryant Thomason, Anna Gayle Thomason, Tara Nicole Thomason and Erin Michelle Thomason.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2PM Friday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Dr. N. Keith Polk and Rev. Ted R. Morton, Jr. officiating.
A private family burial will be held at Edgewood Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Young Thomason, IV, W. Phillip Lovoy, James Wells Thomason, Jr., Jack H. King, Jimmy O'Bryant, Watson L. Dorn, W. Lang Foster, Jr., William D. Coleman, Henry A. Dorn and Kenneth W. Fish.
The family is at the home and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Thursday evening.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Foundation, 211 North Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646, The Georgia Tech Foundation, 760 Spring Street, NW, 4th Floor, Atlanta, GA 30308 or to the United Way of Greenwood County, 110 Phoenix Street, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Ralph Bernard Barnes, 86, of Eden Gardens, widower of Rebecca Merree Moss Barnes, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at his home.
Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

Coach Dennis Wayne Botts Sr.
ABBEVILLE, SC — Coach Dennis Wayne Botts Sr., 55, resident of 97 Noble Estates, Husband of Dionne Mallory Botts died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Born in Fort Lewis, Washington . He was a son of Johnnie “Jewel” Loftis Botts and the late Lt. Col. LB Botts.
Dennis was a 1972 graduate of Newberry College where he earned a B.S. Degree in Economics and later received his Master’s Degree from Clemson University. Coach Botts coaching career spanned over 33 years. He began his coaching career as an assistant football coach and head basketball coach at Calhoun Falls High School. He later became the head football coach at Calhoun Falls where he served for seven seasons. In 1989 he became the head football coach at Abbeville High School where he coached for 15 years. During his time as head coach his teams earned 12 Region Championships, 4 Upper State Championships, and 2 State Championships in 1991 and 1996. Coach Botts was also named Coach of the Year 10 times in his Region and 3 times he was the Coach of the Year for the entire sovereign state of South Carolina. In 2003 he became the winningest football coach in Abbeville High School history with 147 wins. During his time as head coach his teams earned 188 victories.
Coach Botts was not only a great football coach he was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Coach Botts was also very proud to be a part of the Abbeville Community. He was always appreciative of the support the community gave to him during his years in Abbeville. Coach Botts was an avid fisherman having won many tournaments during his fishing career. One thing Coach Botts enjoyed more than football was spending time with his boys, fishing. Coach also loved spending time with his grandchildren, Alex, Nate, Cruz and Meg. He would speak of them everyday.
Coach Botts was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
He is survived by: his wife Dionne Mallory Botts of the home, one daughter Shannon and son-in-law Tony Temple of Abbeville, two sons Jonathan Botts of the home and Wayne and daughter-in-law Lana Botts of Abbeville, two brothers Bill Botts of Abbeville and Michael Botts of Lake Secession, his mother Johnnie “Jewel” Loftis Botts of Abbeville and grandchildren Alex, Nate, and Cruz Temple, and Meg Botts.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 at 11 am from Hite Stadium on the campus of Abbeville High School with the Rev’s Lee Bryant and Bob Clemons with Coach Dick Williams officiating. The burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery, Abbeville, South Carolina.
Active pallbearers will be Phillip Boyles, Frankie Hodges, Larry Campbell, Don Sherrard, Tom Howie, Mike Calvert, Coach Jamie Nickles, Coach Mark Smith, Mark Horton, Mike Campbell and Grady Butler.
Honorary pallbearers will be current and former football players and all coaches from SC High School League.
The body is at the Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday evening. The family is at the home 97 Noble Estates.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to the Dennis Botts Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Bank of Abbeville, P.O. Box 400, Abbeville, SC 29620.

George W. Matthews
CROSS HILL — George Wesley Matthews, 81, of 720 N. Main St., formerly of 208 Abbey Lane, Greenwood, husband of Azalee Pittman Matthews, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, of cancer.
Born in Keene, N.H., he was a son of the late Earl Thurston and Elsie Willis Matthews. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, worked in wholesale plumbing and retired from Anchor Supply, Clinton, in 1987. Building Tall Pines Campground on Lake Greenwood in 1971, he and his wife operated it until 1998. He was a graduate of Parker High School and The Dale Carnegie Course and a member of Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church of Cross Hill.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, George William “Bill” Matthews of Lexington; a daughter, Patricia M. “Pat” Coleman of Cross Hill; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Matthews of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a sister, Barbara Whitehead of Commerce, Ga.
Memorial services were 4 p.m. Nov. 30 at Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Trevor Downey.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 200 W. Liberty Springs St., Cross Hill, SC 29332.

Lillie Simmons
GREENWOOD — Lillie Lewis Simmons, 76, resident of 726 Fairforest Drive, #6, widow of Waymon F. Simmons, died December 10, 2003 at the Hospice House of the Upstate in Anderson.
Born in Abbeville County September 27, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Goody and Georgia Bledsoe Lewis. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church and a former member of the Maybelle Coleman Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Simmons was retired from Parke-Davis Company and has since been associated with Hospice Care of the Piedmont as a sitter and caretaker.
Surviving are a son, Wayne Lewis “Buddy” and wife, Martha Stevens Simmons of Greenwood, a grandson, Steven Wayne and wife Angie Pinson Simmons of Greenwood; a granddaughter, Christi Simmons Foster and husband William Michael Foster of Spartanburg. A number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 2pm Saturday at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandra Smith King officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Steve Simmons, Mike Foster, Tony Bell, Danny Bell, Darby Bell, and Steven Allison.
Honorary escort will be Dr. Jack Tinney, Thomas Wingard, James Witt, Dr. Dan Robinson, Ronnie Hawkins, Bill Lloyd, Courtland Lewis, Velma Cox, Dave Hilderbrand, Wyley Smith, Keith Rodgers, Bobby Bailey, Joey and Louise Hough and Morris Lewis.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1pm Saturday.
The family is at the home of Wayne and Martha Simmons, 114 Clark Avenue and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:00 Friday evening.

BRADLEY — Services for Stanley Eric “Rick” Terry, of 613 New Zion Road, are 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Derrick Stewart, assisted by Elder G.T. Devlin Jr. and the Revs. Myron D. Hill, Willie N. Norman, B.J. Glover and Derrick Scott. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in the church cemetery.

CALHOUN FALLS — Services for Deputy Sgt. Daniel “Danny” Wilson, of 111 Hickory St., are 2 p.m. Saturday at Glover’s A.M.E. Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Merrill, Mayor Johnny Waller and the Rev. Clinton Hall. Burial, with military rites, is in the church cemetery.
Viewing is 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Abbeville & White Mortuary.
The family is at the home of a sister, Marilyn and John Lee, 983 Highway 72 W., Abbeville.
