ABBEVILLE — Dora Frances Vail Kidd, 73, of 102 Church St., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at her home.
Born in Calhoun Falls, she was a daughter of the late Amos Lindsey and Sarah Leila Brown Vail. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Al Kidd, John Kidd and Randall Kidd, all of Abbeville and Wayne Kidd of Donalds; a daughter, Beverly Kidd Shaw of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a brother, David Vail of Summerville, Ga.; a sister, Etta Lee Vail Smith of Enterprise, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Visitation is 6-7:30 tonight at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.
The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge.

Rachel Parks
Services for Rachel Robinson Parks, of 900 Franklin Ave., Valley Stream, N.Y., are at noon Saturday at Good Hope Baptist Church, Hodges, conducted by the Rev. Stanley Haltiwanger, pastor, assisted by the Revs. Linda Posley, Jerry Brown and Dr. W.S. Harrison. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jamie J. Parks III, Anthony J. Parks, Albert F. Parks, David Martin Jr., James L. Butler and Arthur J. Butler.
Flower bearers are Joycea Curry, Mary Curry, Ericka Gold, Juanita Gilbert, Barbara Martin, Crystal Parks, Jackie Parks, Shaunda Brunston and Lakendra Brunston.
A wake is 6-7:30 tonight at Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of David Sr. and Bessie Martin, 134 Empire Circle, Aspen Heights.

Willie Prince
ABBEVILLE — Willie Simpson Prince, of 105 Woodland Way, widow of John Prince, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at her home.
Services will be announced by Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home.

Edna Dorn Reynolds
McCORMICK — Edna Louise Dorn Reynolds, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Strom Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mary Ellen Herrin, 406 E. Augusta St., McCormick.
Services will be announced by Strom Funeral Home.

George Balchin Sr.
GREENWOOD – George Milton Balchin, Sr., 77, resident of 312 Marietta Drive, husband of Annie Clair Harling Balchin, died January 19, 2004 at National HealthCare of Greenwood.
Born in Elbert County, GA, February 1, 1926, he was a son of the late William Edgar and Jewel Frost Balchin. He retired from Commissioners of Public Works after 21 years of service and was owner and operator of Discount Tires in Abbeville.
A Charter Member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church, he was also a deacon, a lay minister, Sunday school superintendent and teacher and a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of the church. Mr. Balchin was one of the organizers of Emerald Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a son, Mickey Balchin of Greenwood; two daughters, Cynthia Paul of Greenwood and Clair Harmon of Greenville; four sisters, Sarah Nickles of Union, Billie Wilson and Doris Ashley, both of Honea Path and Flonnie Shaw of Spartanburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Rebecca Jean Balchin and Maxie McDonald.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 Wednesday at Rice Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Tucker and Rev. Dean Webb officiating.
Entombment will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be grand-sons and nephews along with Lawson Clark.
Honorary escort will be the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and Commissioner of Public Works Associates.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2:30 Wednesday.
The family is at the home and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Upstate US Chapter, 521 McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29621.

Mr. Vernon Bradberry
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC – Mr. Vernon Bradberry, 80, beloved husband of Mrs. Margaret Hicks Bradberry, of Hollis Ave., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 18, 2004 at University Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, January 22, 2004 from First Baptist Church of North Augusta with Rev. Steve Davis and Rev. Mark Owens officiating. Interment will be held in Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be nephews Joel Bradberry, Brent Murdock, Mark Bradberry, Jan Harman, Chris Hudson and James Eason.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Adult 3 Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church North Augusta.
Mr. Bradberry, born on November 13, 1923, was a native of Abbeville, SC having made North Augusta his home for the past 50 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta and the Adult 3 Sunday School Class. Mr. Bradberry served with the U.S. Army 821st MP Company in Europe during WWII. His time was spent in England, France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and the drive to the Rhine River to capture the Bridge at Remagen. He was the recipient of 4 Bronze Stars during his military career.
Mr. Bradberrry worked on the construction of the Clark Hill Dam during the early 1950’s. He retired from E.I. Dupont Company at Savannah River Plant after 32 years of service.
He was a son of the late Oscar T. and Bessie Horton Bradberry of Abbeville, SC. He was preceded in death by brothers Rayford, George, Rufus, and Clarence Bradberry and by sisters, Beatrice B. Hicks, Lillian B. Scarborough, and Lois B. Russum.
Mr. Bradberry was a loving husband, father, and grand-father. He will be greatly missed by his family.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by daughters Susan B. Wilkerson and Glenda B. Flowers (Larry) and a son, Randy Bradberry (Donna) all of North Augusta; four grandchildren, Melissa Flowers, Melody Flowers, Beau Bradberry, and Megan Bradberry; two sisters, Clara Hicks of Anderson, SC and Doris Murdock of Saylors Cross Roads, SC; two brothers, E. H. Bradberry of Virginia Beach, VA and Ansel Bradberry of Abbeville, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, January 21, 2004 from 6 until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the local Parkinson’s Foundation, c/o Barbara Gagnon, 1193 New Bridge Road, Aiken, SC 29805 or to The Annie Armstrong Fund, c/o First Baptist Church of North Augusta, 602 Georgia Ave., North Augusta, SC 29841.

Violet W. Jones
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Violet W. Jones, 86, widow of James A. Jones, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004. Born in Calhoun Falls, S.C., she was a member of Fayetteville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gaylon (Janice) Northcutt and Mrs. James (Ginger) Gaskins, both of Fayetteville; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fayetteville First Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Glenn Stringham, Ed Lynch and Frank Ellis. Burial is in Camp Memorial Park.

Betty McCloskey
LONGWOOD, Fla. — Betty Latham McCloskey, 77, widow of Jim McCloskey, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 in Longwood.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol McCloskey of Florida and Patty Girlics of Virginia; two sisters, Hilda Morgan of Tennessee and Ruth Latham Austin of Greenwood, S.C.; a brother, Ottis W. Latham of Greenwood; a grandchild.

Florence H. Miller
GREENWOOD – Florence Harrison Miller, 70, of 212 E. Laurel Avenue and formerly of 612 Pelzer Street, wife of Ronald Ray Miller, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at her home.
Born in LaGrange, GA, she was a daughter of the late Beulah and Catherine Winfrow Harrison. She retired from Capsugel after 27 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is her husband of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Linda Gail) Rowe of the home and Mrs. Andy (Sandy) Parnell of Greenwood; a sister, Evelyn Miller of Greenwood; four grandchildren, John Seabolt Jr., Cathy Seabolt Garrison, Renee Leigaber Martin and Mindi Leigaber Boykin; and five great grandchildren, Austin Odom, Cameron Martin, Taylor Garrison, Derrick Martin and Santana Boykin.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be David Dill, John Seabolt Sr., Jacob Miller, Dewey “Buddy” Willis, Chris Miller and Robert Odom.
The family is at the home.

Thelma Thrasher
ANDERSON — Thelma Juanita Garner Thrasher, 88, of Route 11, Lakewood Lane, widow of Dewey Thrasher, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at McCormick Health Care.
Born in Kelton, she was a daughter of the late Davis Roy and Bessie Adams Garner. She was a homemaker and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Tommy Thrasher, David Thrasher and Dennis Thrasher, all of Anderson; a stepson, Calvin Thrasher of Anderson; four daughters, Sandra Thrasher of Greenwood, Frances Phillips and Marilyn Lanier, both of Anderson and Patsy Garner of Columbia; a stepdaughter, Madge Howell of Spartanburg; two brothers, Everette Garner and Donald Garner, both of Union; five sisters, Joyce Blakley of Columbia, Betty Dean Harvey and Margaret Howell, both of Jonesville, Lou Jean Knox and Nathalis Comer, both of North Carolina; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at McDougald Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Curtis Lanier and Wayne Power. Burial is in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-7 today at the funeral home.
Family members are at their respective homes.

John Ward Jr.
John Henry Ward Jr., 60, of 106 Crescent Drive, husband of Frances White Ward, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 in Fayetteville, Ga. Born in Langley, he was a son of the late John Henry Ward Sr. and Thelma Cooper Ward. He graduated from Langley-Bath-Clearwater High School, attended the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and graduated from Lander College (now Lander University). He was founder and former owner of John Ward Enterprises and Ward Builders. He was a former member of the Home Builders Association of Greenwood and a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Trey Ward of Greenwood and Grant Ward of Atlanta; a daughter, Rebekah W. Ulsaker of Peachtree City, Ga.; two sisters, Betty Moody and Joyce Hubbard, both of Langley; a brother, Tommy Ward of Langley; four grandchildren.
Memorial services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Greenwood Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Timothy Erskine.
Visitation is after the services in the church fellowship hall.
The family is at the home of a son, Trey and Ann Ward, 204 Stonewood Drive.
Memorials may be made to First Greenwood Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 982, Greenwood, SC 29648.

Guy V. Whitener, 100
NEWBERRY — Guy Vanderbilt Whitener, 100, of 3272 College St., widower of Carrie Williams Whitener, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at White Oak Manor.
Born in Lincoln County, N.C., he was a son of the late M. Luther and Ella Mae Sain Whitener. He had been owner and president of Whitener Lumber Co., Newberry, and was part owner and vice president of Southwest Forest Industries. He also owned and operated lumber mills in other areas of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Serving eight years with the South Carolina Forest Commission, six years as chairman, he was appointed by the late Governor Olin D. Johnson to serve on his staff while in office. He was instrumental in establishing many South Carolina parks. A member of Central United Methodist Church in Newberry and the Chesley Cannon Bible Class, he helped establish and build the Isle of Palms Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Bonnie W. Hamrick; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church. Burial is in Rosemont Cemetery, Springdale Section.
Visitation is 6-7:30 tonight at Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 67, Newberry SC 29108.
Whitaker Funeral Home is in charge.

Elizabeth G. Bodie
McCORMICK — Elizabeth Gilmer Bodie, 93, widow of William R. Bodie Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004.
Born in Old Edgefield County, she was a daughter of the late John J. Gilmer and Sarah Cordelia Laughthridge Bell. She lived in McCormick County most of her life and in Lincolnton, Ga., for 10 years. She was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church, Plum Branch.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances B. Gibson of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mary Faye B. Freeland of Greenville, Helen B. Ernest of Lewisville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. today in Plum Branch Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Wade Everett.
Strom Funeral Home is in charge.
