Derek Lamar Bynum
WILKESBORO, N.C. — Derek Lamar Bynum, 14, of Old Highway 60, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Winston Salem.
Born in Wilkes County, he was a son of Otis Gilbert Jr. and Melanie Bynum. He was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. An eighth grade student at Central Wilkes Middle School, he was on the track team, played on the Yellow Jackets football team and played AAU Basketball.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Thea Gilbert of Wilkesboro; his mother of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Megan Bynum and Brittney Thomas, both of North Wilkesboro; three brothers, Cameron Williams of North Wilkesboro, Dezmon Otis Gilbert of Ohio, Otis Gilbert III of Wilkesboro; a stepsister, Emani Tatum of Wilkesboro; a stepbrother, JeShod Hughes of Wilkesboro; grandparents, Arnold Thomas and Betty S. Bynum of Wilkesboro, Maggie S. Gilbert of Greenwood, S.C.; two great-grandmothers, Mabel P. Spicer of Traphill, Anna R. Stevens of North Wilkesboro; step-grandmother, Pearlie Brown of Wilkesboro.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Richard Watts, Ronald Speas and Owen Dobbins. Burial is in Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston Salem, NC 27157.

Myrtis Cunningham
McCORMICK — Myrtis “Mudies” Lee Settles Moton Cunningham, 78, of 308 Wall Road, wife of Daniel Cunningham, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood.
The family is at the home of a son, Abe Moton Jr., 32 Moton-Moore Road.
Services will be announced by Butler & Sons Funeral Home, Saluda.

Reda Gomillion
Reda Morton Gomillion, 85, formerly of Aiken, widow of J. Wade Gomillion, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at National Healthcare Center in Greenwood.
Born in Aiken County, she was a daughter of the late Otto H. Sr. and Fannie Cook Morton. She was a graduate of Aiken High School and a member of Memorial Baptist Church and the Dorcus Sunday School Class of the church. She had lived in Greenwood since January 2003.
Survivors include a daughter, Rose G. Whaley of Greenwood; two sons, Ted B. Gomillion of Encino, Calif., and Robert V. Gomillion of Chino, Calif.; two sisters, Bessie M. Emeneker and Ruby M. Aull, both of Aiken; three brothers, Otto H. Morton Jr. of Aiken, John A. Morton of North Augusta and Robert Morton of Greenville; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Baptist Church, Aiken, conducted by the Rev. Jim Kirk. Burial is in Bethany Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Dempsey Day, Ralph Day, Dale Morton, Oneal Youngblood, Sammy Morton and Alex Collie.
Visitation is 10-11 Wednesday in the church fellowship hall.
The family is at the home of Rose and Bill Whaley, 107 N. Cedar Drive.
Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, 3100 Vaucluse Road, Aiken, SC 29801.

Jackie Holbert
ABBEVILLE — Jackie Drennan Holbert, 60, of 407 Old Abbeville Highway, widow of Dewey W. Holbert, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur B. and Lenora Beauford Drennan. She was a retired secretary with The James C. Green Insurance Co., Greenwood, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael D. Holbert of the home; a sister, Sara White of Columbia.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. today in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Bob Clemons.
The family is at the home.
Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge.

Lillie Nathan Holloway
Services for Lillie “Doll Baby” Nathan Holloway, formerly of 115 Cole St., are 1 p.m. Thursday at Morris Chapel Baptist Church, the Rev. Ricky V. Syndab officiating, assisted by the Revs. Clyde D. Cannon and Jonathan Greene. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Flower bearers are members of Women’s Aide Society No. 85 and the church Missionary Society.
Honorary escorts are the church officers.
Visitation is at 115 Cole St.

Hazel Elmore Jackson
Mrs. Hazel Elmore Jackson, age 94, a resident of N.H.C. Health Care Center, Cambridge Street, Greenwood, S.C., died Sunday, February 22, 2004, in the N.H.C. Health Care Center.
Born in Haynesville, Louisiana, she was a daughter of the late Rufus and Jerusha Bond Elmore. She was a retired school teacher and a member of the First Christian Church, Greenwood, S.C.
Her husband was the late Frank E. Jackson.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gerald Jackson and Frank E. and Phyllis Jackson of Greenwood, S.C.; two granddaughters, Julie Parris of Jefferson, N.C. and Jennifer Mull of Charleston, S.C. and one great-grandson, Tyler Mull.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 29, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Deadfall Road, Greenwood, S.C., with Rev. Dan Hodge officiating. A private burial was in Latimer Cemetery, Calhoun Falls, S.C.
The family will receive friends at the home at 110 Yorke Drive, Greenwood, S.C. from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 29.
Calhoun Falls Funeral Home, Calhoun Falls, S.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Moton Johnson
Services for Elizabeth “Liz” Moton Johnson, of 102 N. Ames St., are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Redeemer Faith Church, conducted by Bishop Ethel M. Talbert Spearman, assisted by Elder Charlie Spearman, Apostle Jessie Simmons and Elder Clemson Pellin. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial is in Evening Star Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are nephews.
Flower bearers are nieces.
Honorary escorts are members of W.E. Parker High School (Edgefield) Class of 1965.
Visitation is at the home of her parents, J.B. and Alma Walton Moton, 110 Richard St.

Jerry McAuley Miner, 79, of 623 Fairforest Road, husband of Elaine Stewart Miner, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 at his home.
Visitation is 6-8 Wednesday at Harley Funeral Home.

J.W. ‘Bill’ Mitchell
CHAPIN — J.W. “Bill” Mitchell, husband of Shirley A. Mitchell, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004.
A son of the late Caleb Sidney and Ola McDowell Mitchell, he was educated at the University of South Carolina and served as an Army Air Corps pilot during World War II. He officiated for high school football for 22 years and was a member of Richland Masonic Lodge for 50 years. He was president of Mitchell Music Co., Columbia, before retiring.
Survivors include his wife of Chapin; a daughter, Kathleen Florence Wingert of Columbia; a son, John W. Mitchell Jr. of Chapin; a stepson, Michael F. Sellers of Irmo; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mayson Memorial Cemetery, Good Hope Baptist Church, Saluda.
Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.

Donald Dillard Covil
CONYERS, GA. — Donald Dillard Covil, 71, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Emory University Hospital, Decatur, Ga.
Born in Pacolet, he was a son of the late William Washington and Ola Dillard Covil. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict where he served as a medical technician. He was a retired co-owner of C & H Equipment Inc. of Lake City, Ga.
Survivors include two daughters, Jill Covil Busby of Conyers and Dianne Covil Collins of Seneca; a sister, Ann Covil McLees of Gig Harbor, Wash.; two brothers, Billy Covil of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Cecil C. Covil of Greenwood; his wife, Rosa Parker Sims of Conyers, Ga. and three granddaughters.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Horace Ward Funeral Home in Conyers, Ga.
Memorials may be made to the Conyers Seventh Day Adventist Church Memorial Handbell Fund or a charity of one’s choice.

Annie Lee Davis
WARE SHOALS, S.C. — Annie Lee Cook Davis, 91, widow of Charles W. Davis, died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center. She was born in Laurens County, a daughter of the late Seth D. and Mamie Mahala Cook. She was a member of Ware Shoals United Methodist Church and was a Quarter Century retiree from Riegel Textile Corp. She was also a member of First Baptist ADY.
Surviving are: one son, Mike Davis and wife Sharon, Ware Shoals; one daughter, June Davis and husband Bobby, Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Patsy Davis, Greenwood; one brother, John D. Cook, Dunn, NC; five sisters, Rachel Pitts, Laurens, Evelyn Hewett, Atlanta, Ola Ouzts, Bobbie Teague, and Blanche Jones, all of Ware Shoals. Also, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was pre-deceased by a son, Marion Davis, a brother, Paul Cook and two sisters, Martha Catherine Owens and Sherden Pulley.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, 2 PM at Ware Shoals Methodist Church with Rev. Gayle Summey and Rev. Robert Emory officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Kevin, Randy, and Patrick Davis, Bobby Kirby, Wayne Kirby and Danny Riddle.
Honorary escort will be members of the Elizabeth Martin Sunday School Class, ADY, Marion and Sara Carnell, Kim Baldwin and Dr. Robert Clarke.
The family will be at 7 Kathryn Way, Ware Shoals and will receive friends at Parker-White Funeral Home, Monday, 7-9 PM. The body will be placed in the church at 1 PM Tuesday.

Robert Franklin McElveen
FLORENCE, SC — Robert Franklin McElveen, 79, of 218 N. Lakewood Drive, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at his residence after an illness.
Born in Sumter County, SC, he was a son of the late Robert Franklin and Sally Jane M. McElveen. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a member of the John Calvin Presbyterian Church where he was a past Deacon and Elder, and a member of the C.P.L. Pioneers. He retired after 41 years as Southern Division Manager of Transmission Lines for Carolina Power and Light Co.
Surviving are his wife, Henrietta Irene Powell McElveen of the home; 4 children, Robert F. (Diana) McElveen, Jr. of Loris, SC, Steve McElveen and Danny Wayne McElveen, both of Florence, and Pam (Pat) Fagan of Greenwood, SC; 1 brother, Glen O. McElveen of Shiloh, SC; 1 sister, Junelle Spires of Sumter, SC; 5 grandchildren, Amy McElveen Dew of Loris, Melia McElveen of Florence, Keely Fagan, Connor Fagan and Ian Fagan all of Greenwood, SC.
Memorials may be made to the John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2000 Marsh Ave., Florence, SC 29503 or to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
Visitation is 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Funeral services are 3 p.m. Tuesday in the John Calvin Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Carlyle Thornton
Carlyle Thornton, 90, of 505 Bolt St., husband of Grace Pack Thornton, died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at his home.
Born in Spartanburg County, he was a son of the late G.C. and Inez Rayfield Thornton. He was a member of Abney Memorial Baptist Church and the Sunshine Club. He was a WWII Army Veteran and retired from the Service Dept. of Greenwood Mills, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Carlyle Thornton Jr. of Greenwood; a daughter, Brenda Calvert of Abbeville; a brother, Harry Thornton of Spartanburg; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Reuel Westbrook.
Honorary escorts are the Men of Abney Memorial Baptist Church.
Visitation is 1:30-2:30 today at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home.
