Mr. Hembel died quietly in his home after an illness of less than a year. Born April 10th, 1915, in Jackson, Wisconsin, he was the fourth child of Henry and Lydia Hembel, who owned a farm in the heavily German American area around West Bend. Young Lester was graduated from West Bend High School and from a one-year teachers’ college which supplied teachers to the remote regional schools in the area.
Impressed by the transatlantic flight of Charles Lindbergh in 1927, Lester dreamed of a flying career. He and his older brother Marvin acquired an airplane in the early 30’s and had a barnstorming and air circus business. The Depression, however, took its toll on “pleasure” businesses, as well as farms, and the family sold up and moved to Florida. There, 19-year-old Lester worked in a traveling tent show which toured the small towns of the South with a short moving picture, an amateur minstrel show, a trapeze act, and a photography booth. Having gathered a small amount of money, he continued his education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he studied geology. Unfortunately, like many other young men of his great generation, his studies were interrupted by WWII.
Lester came to Columbia to work with his brother Marvin at Hawthorne Flying Service in Columbia. This business was running the Civilian Pilot Training Program, which was attached to the navy and trained pilots for the war effort. It was while teaching the ground school courses for this program that he met Caroline Hammond Etheredge, his bride-to-be, soul mate, and companion for life. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 1942. They were to raise three children and travel the world together for more than fifty years.
At the end of the war, the Hembrels moved home to the Etheredge family plantation in Saluda where they opened Saluda Frozen Foods. Les later served as president of the National Meat Packers Association and gave speeches, help and advice to many small businessmen. Loving machinery as he did, Les also operated an earthmoving and pond building business which left its mark on the fields and farms of Saluda County.
The business for which Les is best remembered, however, is South Carolina Helicopters. Les’s insistence on staying in his beloved Saluda county and his refusal to set up on one of the big airports in Columbia or Atlanta resulted in a dynamic and well respected aviation business which drew clients and students from all over the world to the side yard of Les’s home. Many Saluda country children will remember making their parents drive them by this busy block whenever they came to town to see the “whirlybirds.” His business did many kinds of flying: instruction, aerial photography, mosquito control, crop dusting, search and rescue, traffic report, passenger carrying, and Santa Claus drop. He also did sales and service for the Hughes helicopters which he favored, and was famous as a mechanic and welder as well as pilot and instructor. In 1994 he was inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame: recognition with which his wife Caroline was also later honored.
Anyone who knew Les will remember his almost unlimited energy. He could teach all day, fix machinery all night, and still go out with weed eater and a flashlight to do the fence line after dark. He walked to the swimming pool and back every day until a very advanced age, greeting all whom he met.
Friends will also remember his generosity. Many offer stories of gifts offered: helicopter rides for a birthday child, business advice, spiritual counsel, something welded or repaired or built. The real gift that Les had to offer, however, was his leadership. A dynamic, civic-minded individual with a real talent for decision-making and taking responsibility, Les gave his abilities to his community all of his life. Serving in the Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, the Lions Club, the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, the school board, as chairman of the board of deacons, scoutmaster and Sunday School teacher, to mention only some, Les gave of himself to benefit others. He was proud to have served on the pilot committees which eventually resulted in the building of the Saluda County airport, the location in Saluda of a Milliken textile plant, and the repair and reopening of the Saluda Jaycee pool.
Les Hembel is the man who wanted to fly for Delta Airlines, but turned down the offer when it came in order to nurture his struggling businesses, honor his commitment to his community, and keep his family where he most loved to be: Whitehall Plantation, Saluda County USA. Home and family were paramount. Faith, patriotism, service to the larger community were not ideals but living, breathing reality. Always looking for the best in people and the bright side of situations, always bursting with confidence and enthusiasm he said, “Don’t overlook the things you love as an opportunity to earn a living instead of just being a hobby. Make your life what you want it, where you want it. Make it happen.” That was his American dream, and he lived it every day.
Les is survived by his children: Henry Hammond Hembel, and Caroline Hembel Brazil; grandchildren, Lisa Helen Rollins, Connor Clark Walker, Pierce Sadler White III, Merlin Raven Hembel, Ariel Robin Hembel, Eric Lester Brazil, Richard Myles Brazil, and Diana Amber Brazil, as well as seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline Etheredge Hembel and his daughter Helen Etheredge Hembel.
