M. Louise Scasbrick
AUGUSTA — M. Louise Scasbrick, 86, widow of Ed Scasbrick, died Friday, June 25, 2004 at the University Hospital.
She was a native of Greenwood, a beautician, a member of Lake Park Baptist and Senior Saints.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. James R. (Diane S.) Johnson of Evans, Ga. and Margaret Giles of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Clayton Devore of Greenwood; two sisters, Margaret McDaniel of Edgefield and Mary Hollis of Belton; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Earl Saxon and K.C. Stevens. Burial is in Westover Memorial Park.
Visitation is 7-9 Monday at Plant’s Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Assoc., Augusta Chapter, 1899 Central Ave., Augusta, Ga. 30904.
Platt’s Funeral Home, Evans, Ga., is in charge.

Florence Burnett
Florence Loraine Cook Burnett, 94, resident of 447 D Grace St, widow of S.H. Burnett died June 26, 2004 at her home.
Born in Greenwood County, February 3, 1910, she was a daughter of the late George Q. and Mary Elizabeth Dominick Cook. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Seneca.
Mrs. Burnett was previously married to the late M.R. Wrenn and the late James F. Green.
Surviving are two daughters, Leona Stevenson of Shoals Junction and Mrs. Jim (Mary Nancy) Long of Greenwood, a step-son, Ron Burnett of Sumter and a sister Betsy Edwards of Apex, NC. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sixteen step grandchildren, thirty one step great-grandchildren and eight step great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by step-sons, Ralph Green and Bill Burnett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Otto McDonald officiating.
Burial will be in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Callison.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Green, Barry Young, Michael Koon, Ronald Poole, Roy Hudgens and Larry Hudgens.
Honorary escort will be Grace Dillard and William and Linda Keller.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Long, 101 Pine Circle and will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 Tuesday afternoon.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Charlie Cowan
Charlie Edward Cowan, 86, of 520 Calhoun Road East, husband of Dorothy “Dot” Hastings Cowan, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Warrenville, he was a son of the late Walter L. and Aurie McClain Cowan. He was an Army veteran of WW II, retired from Greenwood Mills, Adams Plant and a member of Coronaca Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, C. Wayne Cowan and Randy Cowan, both of Greenwood; a sister, Evelyn Quattlebaum of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Harry Cowan of Greenwood; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blyth Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wade Burton. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Thomas Cowan, Bobby Cowan, Johnny Cowan, Gerald Garron, Alton Tollison, Penny Pinson and Gene Sargent.
Honorary escorts are Ray Pinson, Bobby Stoudemire, Ron and Pat Gurney.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home.
The family is at the home.

Celeste Royal
LUMBERTON, NC — Celeste Sears Royal, 84, formerly of Aiken, S.C., widow of D. Louis B. Royal Jr., died Saturday, June 26, 2004 in Lumberton.
Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late William Truman and Naomi Hudgins Sears. Survivors include a daughter, Gloria R. Glezen and a son, Andy L. Royal, both of Lumberton; two sisters, Mae S. Young of Greenwood, Florence S. Walker of Bradley; and four grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Hatcher Funeral Home in Langley, S.C. Burial is in Hephzibah, Ga. Announcement courtesy of Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood.

John Wesley Franks
CLINTON — John Wesley Franks, 62, widower of Cora Reeder Franks, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Laurens County Hospital in Clinton.
A son of the late George Nelson and Mary Lucy Thompson Franks, he attended Hebron Baptist Church and Laurens County schools. He was a former employee of Lydia Mill and Standard Plywood Co. and a member of the Men’s Aide Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Robin Rice Suber of Clinton; a son, Bob Wesley Rice of Clinton; two sisters, Ruby Turner of Cincinnati and the Rev. Lee Ruth Cook of Greenwood; three brothers, Fred Franks, Robert Franks and George Franks, all of Clinton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church, Cross Hill. Burial is in the church cemetery.
The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Franks, 1093 Brooks Road, off Torrington Road.
Childs Funeral Home is in charge.

Leroy Turner
Services for Leroy Turner, of 131 Russell St., are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson & Son Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Norris Turner, assisted by Minister Darlene Saxon. Burial is in Jacob Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Michael Murray, Robert Kennedy, Willie Spearman, Briscoe Butler, Marvin Wilson and L.C. Martin.
Flower bearers are great-nieces.
Visitation is 6-8 tonight at the home.
Robinson & Son Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Carl Watts
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Carl Watts, widower of Mae Watts, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 in Washington .
Born in Cross Hill, S.C., he was a son of the late Archie and Alice Cunningham Watts. He was a retired brick mason and a former member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Waterloo, S.C.
Survivors include a daughter, Marian, and four sons, Carl Jr., Kenneth, Melvin and Donnell, all of the Maryland- Washington area; a brother, George Watts of Greenwood, S.C.; five sisters, Lillie W. Brown of Florence, S.C., Mozelle W. Milton of Washington , D.C., Catherine W. Cates of St. Albans, N.Y., Eunice W. Kilgore of Greenville, S.C., and Ann W. Morris of Greenwood; and grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. today at Friendship Baptist Church in Washington .

Charles L. Johnson
PLUM BRANCH — Charles L. Johnson, 73, husband of Rosa Lee Smith Johnson, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in McCormick County, he was a son of the late Jim and Fannie Callaham Johnson. He was a member of Hosannah Baptist Church, Modoc, and the Gospel Chorus. He was a retired highway construction employee.
Survivors include four daughters, Judy Reid of Plum Branch, Loree Houston of Clarks Hill, Amanda Holmes of Edgefield and Susanna H. Robertson of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Margaret Marshall of Clarks Hill, Janie Norman of New York City, Lillian Dixon of Detroit; a brother, Amos Johnson of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
The family is at the home of a daughter Judy Reid, 589 Old Augusta Road.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home, McCormick.

Thomas Goode Johnson
GREENVILLE — Thomas Charles Goode Johnson died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
The family is at the home of a daughter Catherine Glenn, 822 Reynolds Ave., Greenwood.
Services will be announced by Parks Funeral Home, Greenwood.

Paul Smith
PENDLETON — Paul McGregor Smith, 23, resident of 5100 Olden Porter Road, died June 29, 2004 at his home. Born in Greenville, June 26, 1981, he was a son of Lewis and Barbara Holloway Smith. He was a graduate of Pendleton High School.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Caroline Smith Lamb and husband Jon Lamb; his fiancée, Jamie Leigh Keller; many aunts, uncles and cousins who loved him dearly.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the Chappells Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Lloyd White officiating.
Pallbearers will be Tari McKinney, Jon Lamb, Jon Holloway, Joe Keller, Everette Summers and Dan Keulermans. The body is at Blyth Funeral Home in Greenwood.
The family is at the home in Pendleton.

Georgia Lee Spruill
HAMPTON — Georgia Lee Spruill, 73, of 728 Holly St. W., died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville. Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Homer Israel and Bertie Lee Williams, she was a 1948 graduate of Tyrrell High School, Columbia, N.C., and graduated from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg. She attended North Carolina A&T, Greensboro and received a master’s degree in chemistry from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. A teacher and mentor in South Carolina public schools for about 40 years, she worked in Holly Hill, Hampton and Walterboro school districts and retired from the Walterboro district. She was a former member of Antioch Baptist Church, Greenwood, and First Estill Baptist Church, Estill. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was a senior choir member, financial secretary for the Missionary Society and Pastor’s Aide Committee, treasurer for the Sunday School and president of the Educational Fund. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Survivors include a son, James Alfred Spruill Jr. of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Leroy (Chandra) Cohen of Hampton and Kathleen Spruill of Miami; a sister, Tuwretha White of Ninety Six; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 6-7:30 tonight at Washington ’s Funeral Home.
Washington ’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Jackie Thomas Davis
WARE SHOALS — Jacqueline Lynn Thomas Davis, 47, wife of Gerald R. Davis, of 4709 Poplar Springs Road, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004.
Born in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late James C. and Dorothy Babb Thomas and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Michael Grover Davis and Travis Reo Overstreet, both of Gray Court; a sister, Beverly T. Smith of Laurens; three grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. John Abrams and Robert Bowling. Burial is in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Laurens.
Pallbearers are John Landin, James Smith, Will Culbertson, Carlton Lothridge, Curtis Lothridge and William Koon.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family is at the home.

Ardessia Drake
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Ardessia Drake, age 95, a resident of Woodmont Senior Living for the past four years, died on June 26, 2004. A native of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, she had lived in Tallahassee for the past eleven years. Mrs. Drake was a member of First Baptist Church of DeFuniak Springs and missed her church family very much after her move to Tallahassee to be near her son and family. She quickly made new friends though and will be remembered as a gracious lady with a loving spirit and being a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother affectionately called “Big Mama” by all who came to love her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James E. Drake, Sr. in 1983 and by three sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Ardessia Drake is survived by her sons: James E. Drake, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Tallahassee and Charles E. Drake and wife Anne of Greenwood, SC; her sister, Lucille Stafford of Ft. Walton Beach; her grandchildren: Jim Drake and wife Cindy of Eustis, Florida; Bob Drake and wife Nancy of Winston-Salem, NC; Kathy Rowland of Tallahassee; Mimi Wetherington and husband Robert of Valdosta, Georgia; Nancy Mattern of Charleston, SC; Jane Poole and husband Glen of Wake Forest, NC; and Charles Drake, Jr. and wife Ruth of Greenwood, SC; twelve great-grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Drake’s funeral and visitation will take place Friday, July 2, 2004 in Jerry Evans Chapel. The service will begin at 2:00 and at its conclusion there will be an interlude in the chapel, a time of visitation. Burial will follow after the visitation in Magnolia Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Jerry Evans of DeFuniak Springs entrusted with arrangements.
