Marvin Hamlett
Marvin Lee Hamlett, 44, resident of 106 Winchester Ct., husband of Sharon Whittington Hamlett, died July 4, 2004 at his home.
Born in Danville, VA, September 21, 1959, he was a son of Betty Campbell Hamlett and the late Vernell Cleveland Hamlett. He attended Greenwood High School and was the owner of Simply Ceilings, Inc. in Greenwood.
Mr. Hamlett attended North Side Baptist Church and was a member of the Greenwood Sertoma Club. He was an avid outdoors man who loved hunting and fishing.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Waterloo are a daughter, Christie D’Lora Hamlett and a son, Marvin “Rusty” Lee Hamlett, Jr., both of the home. A sister, Cheryl Hamlett Todd of Simpsonville, three brothers, Cleveland Darrell Hamlett and Clarence Bradley Hamlett, both of Epworth and Jody Bart Hamlett of Greenwood. 16 nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hamlett was predeceased by a sister Everline “Lynn” Blanche Hamlett Reep.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM Wednesday, July 7, 2004, from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Lethco officiating.
Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Frankie McGee, Stephen Whittington, Dewey Sprouse, Stephen Edwards, Tom Miller and Steve Lloyd.
Honorary escort will be Drew Darby Charles Wells, Darrell Hammond, Randy Free, Peter McKibben and Bubba Jones.
The family is at the home in Gatewood and will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening.
Memorials may be made to North Side Baptist Church, Staying the Course, 409 West Northside Dr., Greenwood, SC 29649 or to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.

Doll Pulley Hill
Services for Doll Pulley Hill are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Cross Hill, conducted by Bishop Emanuel Spearman, assisted by the Revs. Charles Williams, R.A. Pilgrim and Lee Ruth Cook. The body will be placed in the church at 12. Burial is in Vaughnville Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews.
Flower bearers are granddaughters and nieces.
The family is at the home.

Charles Howard Sr.
GREENVILLE — Charles Ryan Howard Sr., 82, resident of 11 Stone Meadow Road, husband of Elizabeth Sligh “Betty” Howard, died July 4, 2004 at his home.
Born in Augusta, GA, March 11, 1922, he was a son of the late Joseph Beverly and Annie Ryan Howard. He was a graduate of Clemson University and a US Army Veteran of WW II. Mr. Howard retired from Dan River Mills, Dan River. VA.
He was a member of Shannon Forest Presbyterian Church. Mr. Howard served on the Board of Directors for the Christian Home for Alcoholics, Crisis Pregnancy Center and Prayer Life Seminars. He enjoyed golf, gardening and community service. He also enjoyed serving as a church Elder and teaching the bible.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Judith Howard “Judy” Murphy of Fanwood, NJ; grandsons, Jamie Murphy and wife, Laure of Atlanta, Todd Murphy and wife, Jennifer of Bridgewater, NJ, Matthew Murphy of Bradford, VT and Joe Howard of San Diego, Ca; granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Howard of Boulder, CO; a great-granddaughter, Madelynn Lee Murphy of Bridgewater; NJ; a daughter-in-law, Linda Oliphant Howard of Denver, CO.
Mr. Howard was predeceased by a son, Charles Ryan Howard Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 AM Wednesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Verdery officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM July 8, 2004 at Shannon Forest Presbyterian Church, Greenville.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home on Stone Meadow Road and will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:30-11:30 Wednesday morning.

Buddy Jay
Robert Royall “Buddy” Jay, 80, resident of 128 Sheffield Road, husband of Eliza Crosby Jay, died July 5, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenwood, February 11, 1924, he was a son of the late Edward Furman and Lucile Parks Jay. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Furman University where he was president of the Kappa Alpha Order. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II where he was attached to the 314th Infantry Battalion of the 79th Infantry Division. He was discharged as a Staff Sargent.
Mr. Jay formerly owned and operated Jay’s House of Fabrics.
A Life Member of First Baptist Church and the Timms Sunday School Class, he also formerly served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member of the church.
He was predeceased by a son, Curtis Crosby Jay.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are a daughter, Mary Kennedy Jay Holman and husband Doug Holman of Lychfield; a son, Robert R. Jay, Jr. and wife, Missy Nettles Jay of Lake City; a sister, Mary Ella Deveney of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Catherine Hendrix Jay, Bates McFadden Holman, Adam Sheppard Jay and Willson Furman Jay.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Hopkins and Rev. Kenny Standley.
Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Calhoun Mays, Jr., Harold McCord, Donald McKellar, Hayden Igleheart, Shelton Stewart, Bobby Ray, Bud Pendergrass and David Simonsen.
Honorary escort will be Allison Lee, Harold Lumley, Dick Gray, Lawrie Rinehart, Susan Cooper and Tammy Marshall.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 10 Am Wednesday.
The family is at the home in Sheffield and will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.

Horace Martin Jones
SPARTANBURG, SC — Horace Martin Jones, 85, of Spartanburg and Magnolia Manor Nursing Home of Inman, died Sunday, July 4, 2004. Born June 20, 1919, in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Horace Belton and Mabel Lee Colson Jones. Mr. Jones lived in Ware Shoals for fifty years where he was employed with Riegel Textiles and was a member of Ware Shoals Methodist Church. In 1971 he moved his family to Spartanburg and later retired from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind with twenty-five years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Lou Williamson Jones; two sons and daughter-in-law, George M. Jones (Sharon – deceased) of Columbia, and Donald B. (Nell) Jones of Chester; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy (Bill) Pearson of Florence, and Jan (Randy) Graham of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Amy Pearson Etheridge and husband Bruce of Mt. Pleasant, Abby Pearson of Indiana, Jeff Jones and wife Susan of Myrtle Beach, Jason Jones and wife Sue of Athens, GA, and Bryan and Caroline Graham of Spartanburg; and two great-grandsons, Pierce Etheridge of Mt. Pleasant, and Ryan Jones of Athens, GA. Mr. Jones was one of eleven children and is survived by one brother, Ben C. Jones of Walhalla, and two sisters, Alma J. Thomas of Seneca, and Eleanor J. Greer of Temecula, CA. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ralph, Jack, and Harry; and four sisters, Virginia, Vera, Elizabeth and Lena.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Greenwood, SC, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Turner.
Memorials may be made to Magnolia Manor of Inman, 63 Blackstock Road, Inman, SC 29349.
The family would like to thank the staff of Magnolia Manor of Inman for the years they cared for him. Special thanks to Yvonne, Mae, Joyce and Linda for their years of love and care.

HODGES — James Carlton Pace, 76, husband of Beatrice Taylor Pace of 118 Robertson St., died Monday, July 5, 2004 at the home of his daughter in Greenville.
Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Lewis Guy and Mattie Lou Cannon Pace. He served in the army during WWII, was retired from AT&T and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Greenwood.
Survivors include his wife of the home, three daughters, Audrey Diane Gaiero, Haverhill, Mass., Glenda Susan Gieder, Greenville and Janice Denice Wiles, Easley; a son, Gary David Pace, Mission Viejo, Calif.; two brothers, Clarence E. “Bill” Pace, Greenville, Guy Franklin Pace, Redding, Calif.; a sister, Mary Webb, Belton; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at Parker-White Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Andrew Webb and Joe Chapman.
Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is 2-3 Thursday at Parker-White Funeral Home.

Sarah Ezell Saxon
GREENVILLE — Sarah Ezell Saxon, 90, a long time residence of Greenville, SC, died July 3 in Kissimmee, FL.
Born in Ware Shoals, SC, she was the daughter of the late Corrie Emmerson and Hallie Whitney Ezell. She was married for 62 years to the late Howard Edward Saxon. She retired from the Greenville Hospital System in 1975. She was a charter member of West Greenville Baptist Church where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union, the T.E.L. Sunday school class, and the adult Training Union class for all of her adult life. Before her illness, Sarah enjoyed Bible study, gardening, quilting, and fishing with her husband.
Sarah is survived by her daughter, Victoria S. Patterson, her son-in-law and friend, Sam S. Patterson, Jr., of Kissimmee, FL; her son, Samuel B. Saxon and daughter-in-law and friend, Rita S. Saxon of Greenwood, SC. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy S. Clark, and an infant son, Ray E. Saxon. She is also survived by her sister, Frances E. Revis, of Greenville. She has eight grandchildren; Angela S. Sanders, and S. Brian Saxon of Greenwood, Lynn C. McGarey of Auburn, GA, Steven S. Clark, Christopher S. Clark, Dawn C. McCaskill of Columbia, Sean S. Patterson and Devin H. Patterson of Kissimmee, FL. She also had six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Nancy Saxon Clark scholarship for nurses at Lander University, 320 Stanley Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649-2099 or West Greenville Baptist Church, 551 Perry Avenue, Greenville, SC 29611.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 .m. Wednesday at West Greenville Baptist Church with burial in Graceland Cemetery, West.

Margaret Stewart
ORANGE, CALIF. — Margaret Stewart, 79, of 301 South Glassell, widow of W. F. “Billy” Stewart died Saturday, June 5, 2004.
Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Nina Belle Wilson Autry.
Survivors include a son, Michael Stewart of Las Vegas; three sisters, Elsie L. Ashley of Greenwood, Ann Boussum of St. Louis, and Mary Jean Kanaly of Perry, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Franklin McCoy.
Visitation is immediately following the memorial service.
The family is at the home of her sister, Elsie Ashley, 308 Alabama Ave.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Ogle H. Thomasson
Ogle Hadden Thomasson, 88, of Morningside, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late Carrie Purvis and Ernie Hadden. She was former owner and operator of Artistic Beauty Shop and a member of South Main Street Baptist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Services are 3 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. David Patterson, with entombment following the service.
The body is at Harley Funeral Home.
Visitation is 2-3 today at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum.
The family is at the home of James Purvis, 786 Deadfall Road.
Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Alyssa Grace Crawford
WARE SHOALS — Graveside services for Alyssa Grace Crawford, infant daughter of Joel Thomas Crawford and Jean Lancaster Jameson were Tuesday at Oakbrook Memorial Park, Greenwood, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Floyd Parker.
Survivors include the parents; four half-sisters, Dawn Manley and Leslie Manley of Greenwood, Maggie Jameson and Haley Jameson of the home; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Mary Crawford of Ware Shoals; maternal grandparents, Boyce and Montine Lancaster of Ware Shoals; paternal great-great-grandmother, Pearl Henderson of Darlington.
Parker-White Funeral Home was in charge.

Sylvester Eightner
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sylvester Eightner, 84, of Anne Maria Nursing Home, died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at University Hospital in Augusta.
Born in Newberry County, S.C., he was a son of the late Ethel Eightner.
He was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, Greenwood, S.C., is in charge.

Victor Tyrone Gaines
SALUDA — Services for Victor Tyrone Gaines, of 105 East End Drive, are 2 p.m. Thursday at the Saluda High School gymnasium, conducted by Bishop Raymond Berger, assisted by the Rev. Johnny C. Gantt, Elder Lee Homer Ouzts and Minister Angela Posey-Graham. Burial is in Mount Enon Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers are friends and members of the Saluda Middle School football team.
Flower bearers are friends of the family.
