SPARTANBURG, SC – Elizabeth Riser Nickols, 79, of 283 Creekridge Drive, formerly of 6271 South Pine Street, Pacolet, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born May 10, 1925, in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ernest and Elizabeth Cooper Riser and was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Julius Allen Nickols, Sr. She was the former owner of Lib’s Dress Shop in Pacolet, and was a member of Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Nickols Bryant and her husband Ronald L. Bryant of Spartanburg; a son, Julius Allen Nickols Jr. and his wife Dianne Kirby Nickols of Pacolet; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Bryant Regnier and her husband Dennis A. Regnier of Spartanburg, Melissa Bryant Burns and her husband James I. Burns, III of Cary, NC; and Kyla M. Nickols of Charleston, SC. She was predeceased by a grandson, Ernest Allen Nichols.
Visitation will be 7-9:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at Floyd’s Pacolet Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church of Pacolet conducted by the Rev. David Inman. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 427, Pacolet Mills, SC 29373; or to the Gibbs Cancer Center, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Foundation, 101 East Wood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Robert Lewis Palmer
WASHINGTON, Ga. — Robert Lewis Palmer, 87, of Highway 378, widower of Emma Ree Wheatley Palmer, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at his home in Wilkes County.
Born in Columbia County, he was a son of the late Robert and Marie Cox Palmer. He was a body shop owner and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church. He served with the C.C. (Civilian Corps) Camp.
Survivors include a son, Roy Palmer of Washington , Ga.; a daughter, Dell Taylor of Washington ; three brothers, Pierce Palmer, Kenny Palmer and Gene Palmer, all of Thomson; five sisters, Frances McMichael, Alice Hamnock, Myrtis Prevette, Nell Myer and Elizabeth Parris, all of Thomson; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 4 p.m. Sunday in Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery, Metasville, conducted by the Rev. Randy Dunaway.
Pallbearers are Mike Wilkie, Danny Ingram, Ellis Thornton, Forrest Spence, Willie Frank Blackburn and Tommy Martin.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Dell P. Taylor.

Thomas C. Patterson
CALHOUN FALLS — Thomas Carlton “The Piano Man” Patterson, 78, husband of Mary Frances Crocker Patterson, of 5352 Highway 72 W., died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at his home.
Born in Abbeville County, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Emma Ellis Patterson. He was a musician, playing piano with numerous groups and for several years at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church. A church organist with Middleton Methodist and with Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Elbert County, he also repaired and tuned pianos. He was an Army veteran and a member of Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Randy Patterson of Calhoun Falls, Dennis Patterson of Epworth and Jerry Patterson of Athens, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Gregg (Sylvia Patterson) Lewis of Calhoun Falls; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Beulah Hill; two brothers, John Albert Patterson and Asbury Patterson.
Services are 2 p.m. today at Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by Dr. Tom Batts and the Revs. Ernest Barr and Alvin Taylor. Burial is in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Abbeville.
Calhoun Falls Funeral Home is in charge.

Ellie Arnold
Ellie Mae Lewis Arnold, 88, of 405 Duke St., widow of T.R. Arnold, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Blyth Funeral Home.

ABBEVILLE — Early Brownlee, of 409 Cambridge St., husband of Jannie Brownlee, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Abbeville County Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Eddie Crapps
GREENWOOD – Services for Dr. William Eddie Crapps, 70, will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Greenwood. Burial will be at 3:00 in Catawba Memorial Park Cemetery, Hickory, N.C. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Greenwood, 722 Grace St., Greenwood, S.C. 29649 or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Crapps, husband of the late Shirley Holt Crapps, died Thursday, July 29, 2004. Born in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the son of the late Maury Simons Crapps and Eulalia Wilson Crapps. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University, South Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and Drew University. He served as pastor to churches in Laurens and Camden and served as a chaplain with the South Carolina Department of Correction in Columbia before retiring in Greenwood.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Crapps Spangler and Ched Spangler of Prosperity; grandchildren Taylor Spangler, Ashley Spangler and Courtney Spangler; brother and sister-in-law Dr. Robert Crapps and Dovie Crapps of Greenville; sister and brother-in-law Joy Crapps Stroupe and John Stroupe of Hickory, N.C., brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joseph and Beth Maxwell; and mother-in-law, Lennie Holt, all of Blacksburg, Va.

Kathryn B. Holland
FOUNTAIN INN — Kathryn Broadwater Holland, 76, of 423-A S. Main St., wife of the Rev. Wells Daniel Holland, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Edgefield, she was a daughter of the late Abram R. and Pauline Byrd Broadwater. She was a graduate of Columbia College, a retired schoolteacher and a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Anderson. She was also a partner in ministry with her husband.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Dan Holland of Hilton Head; a daughter, Susan Holland Bowen of Fountain Inn; six granddaughters.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Welcome Baptist Church, Anderson, conducted by the Rev. William R. West.
Burial is in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Visitation is 2-3 Sunday at the church.
The family is at the home of Susan and Douglas Bowen, 509 Scarlet Oak Drive.

GREENWOOD – Vivian Cannon Maye, 84, of 216 Irvin’s Circle, wife of Peter “Pete” R. Maye, Jr., died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Martin Luther and Roxie Ann Lister Ferguson. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
She was twice married, first to the late Charles W. Cannon and was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Moon Winchester.
Surviving is her husband of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce & Lonnie McManus and Dot & Richard Moon; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald & Norma Cannon, all of Greenwood; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Peter R. Maye III and Doris Maye of Saint Marys, GA; a sister, Ruth F. Lovelace of Greer; a brother, L. Troy Ferguson of Greenwood; eight grandchildren, Pat Cullens, Sheri Winchester, Cheryl Reynolds, Dana Mount, L. Glen McManus, W. Charles “Chuck” McManus, Jeff Cannon, Richard Moon Jr., Christopher Maye and John Reynolds; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steven Crittendon officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Honorary escort will be the friends at Irvin’s Circle.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Clarence Wilson
WARE SHOALS — William Clarence Wilson Sr., 83, of 23 Sparks Ave., husband of Bernice Williams Wilson, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at the Veterans Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Born in Ware Shoals, he was a son of the late Hubert N. and Margaret Boggs Wilson. He retired from Riegel Textile Corp., served in the Army during World War II and was a member First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, William C. Wilson Jr. of Gilbert and Michael E. Wilson of Ware Shoals; two daughters, Margaret W. McQueen Yemassee and Terri W. Johnson of Ware Shoals; a sister, Lois V. Wilson of Ware Shoals; two grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Ware Shoals, conducted by the Revs. Leon Jones and Dan Compton. Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Harold Kay, Danny Riddle, Grady Strickland, Clark Roach, Joe Skinner, Tommy Davis, Don Boling and Dan Branyon.
Honorary escorts are members of the Callaham-Morgan Sunday School Class and Hobart Gowan.
Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Parker-White Funeral Home.

Born in Abbeville County, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Essie Mae Cann Lewis. She was a member of Greenwood Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include two sons, T.R. Arnold Jr. of Abbeville and John Thomas Arnold of Greenwood; two daughters, Betty Jean Hughes and Doris Earline Holder, both of Greenwood; a brother, Charles Lewis of Calif.; a sister, Frances L. Adams of Greenwood; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 4:30 p.m. today, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Mac McLellan and James Wiegman.
Visitation is 3-4 today at Blyth Funeral Home.

Fred Butler
NINETY SIX — Fred Lewis Butler, 73, of 3421 Old Highway 246 South, husband of Grace Eakin Butler, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gray Court, he was a son of the late Wade and Correan Seibret Butler. He was retired from Greenwood Mills, Adams Plant and was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Lisa) Story of Ninety Six and a good friend, Paul McLaughlin.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gayle Summey officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Michael Parris, Donnie Parris, Mathew Parris, Justin Eakin, Darrell Dodgen and Jeff Jones.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Bernice V. Duncan
McCORMICK — Bernice V. Kelly Duncan, of Westowne Apartments, widow of Henry P. Duncan Sr., died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late George and Alma Yeldell Kelly. She was a member of Zion Chapel A.M.E. Church and a retired employee of McCormick Milliken Plant.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Howard (Kathy) Smith of Lincolnton, Mrs. Tony (Rene) Garrett and Mrs. Arthur (Crystal) Parks, both of Greenwood; a son, Henry Duncan of Augusta; a brother, James Kelly of Plum Branch; two sisters, Louise Wideman and Donna Parks, both of Edgefield; seven grandchildren, one reared in the home, Earl Duncan.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Crystal) Parks, 211 Virginia Ave., Greenwood.
Services will be announced by Walker Funeral Home.

Mary Lee Fisher
HODGES — Mary Lee Marshall Fisher, 72, of 4004 Highway 25 N., widow of Richard Fisher, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Hospice of Anderson.
Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Humphrey Marshall and Mamie Lee Patterson Marshall. She was a 1953 graduate of Brewer High School and a former employee at the Gatewood County Club. She was a member of Macedonia C.M.E. Church where she served on the stewardess board, missionary board, was in the senior choir and a pulpit aide. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley Arnold Marshall of Abbeville and Eric Benjamin Fisher of Greenwood; three stepsons, Richard Fisher Jr., Samuel Fisher and David Fisher, all of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Stephanie Fisher of Hodges; five stepdaughters, Sadrina Fisher, Princess Fisher, Sharon Fisher, Melody Fisher and Denise Fisher, all of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren, three reared in the home, Nicole Childs, Darius Childs and Christopher Childs, all of Hodges; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia C.M.E Church in Hodges. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be officers of the church and friends.
Floral bearers will be family and friends.
Honorary escorts will be the Brewer High School Class of 1953.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8 p.m. at the home.
Burial will be at Evening Star.

Rebecca Gentry
NINETY SIX — Rebecca Aiton Gentry, 80, of 114 Aiton Drive, widow of Edward Jean Gentry, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at her home.
Born in Callison, she was a daughter of the late James Shepard and Mary Haupfear Aiton. She was a 1977 cum laude graduate of Lander College and retired from Monsanto. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ninety, where she taught the TEL Sunday School Class.
Survivors include three sons, Edward Jean Gentry Jr. of Lompoc, Calif., James Roger Gentry and William Davis Gentry, both of Ninety Six; three daughters, Betty Rebecca McKittrick of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Deborah Kay Shiflet of York and Bobbie Jean Miller of Pendleton; a sister, Virginia Aiton Rush of Greenwood; a brother, Joseph Edmund Aiton of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Ninety Six, conducted by the Revs. Robin Fisher, Steve Justice and Charles Sprouse.
The body will be placed in the church at 10.
Burial is in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are Eric Gentry, John Mark Shiflet, Barry Schofield, Chris Gettys, Charlie Coxe and Kevin Crittendon.
Honorary escorts are the TEL Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church, Dr. Wiley Price, Sen. John Drummond, Everette Parker, Ebie Greer, Don Clark, John McCray, Rev. Steven Crittendon, Dr. Joe Stephenson and Dr. Sam Burnett.

Melvin Odell Pendleton
DONALDS — Melvin Odell Pendleton, 48, of 171 Robinson St., Donalds, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Self Regional Medical Center, Greenwood.
He was a son of the late Odell Pendleton and Cora Lee Williams. He was a native of Abbeville County and was a graduate of Wright High School, Abbeville and Piedmont Technical College of Greenwood. He was a retired employee of Santee Cooper.
He was a former member of the Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church of Donalds, where he served as an assistant Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church of Level Land, S.C.
Survivors include his wife, Elvia McDavid Pendleton, of the home; two sons, Auston Pendleton of the home and Anthony McDavid of Augusta, Ga.; one sister, Joyce Ann Cunningham of Due West; and two grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Holloway Funeral Home, 101 Holloway Blvd., Belton, S.C.
The family is at the residence, 171 Robinson St., Donalds, S.C.

Annie Lucille Smoot
CLINTON — Annie Lucille Rainey Smoot, of 826 Airport Road, Lot 6, widow of Charlie Smoot, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at the Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Lucille Rainey and J.W. Currenton and a stepdaughter of the late John Willie Rainey. She was educated in Laurens County schools and was a member of St. Vaughnville Baptist Church, Chappells.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Mildred) Carwise and Mrs. Elroy (Jannette) James, both of Cross Hill, Mrs. John (Doris) Farrow, Mrs. Ulysses (Mary) Bluford, Mrs. Kirk (Barbara) Willis and Mrs. Bruce (Brenda Faye) Farrow, all of Clinton; a son, Wesley Smoot of Clinton; a brother, Leroy Boyd of Cross Hill; reared in the home as a sister, Orabell Cunningham of Chappells; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.
Services are 3 p.m. today at St. Vaughnville Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
The family is at the home of a daughter, Mildred and Raymond Carwise, 115 Billy Leopard Road, Cross Hill.
