Perry Dewayne Burns
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Perry Dewayne Burns, 31, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.

Born Aug. 30, 1970, in Lane, S.C., he was the son of Austin Burns Sr. and Tracy Ann Matthews Burns. He was educated in the Alexandria school system.

Survivors besides his parents of Greeleyville include two sons, Perry Jr. of Burke, Va., and Juwan of Alexandria; a daughter, Alexus of Oxon Hill, Md.; two brothers, Austin (Lynette) Burns Jr. of Clinton, Md. and Keith Burns and his wife Michelle of Englewood, Colo.; a sister, Tawanda Burns of Oxon Hill; three uncles, Moses Matthews and his wife Janetta of Bronx, N.Y., Arthur Matthews of Arlington, Va., and Martin Matthews of Atlanta; two aunts, Jeanette Huffman and her husband Jimmie of Lorton, Va., and Elreatha Matthews of Alexandria, Va.; three nephews, Austin III of Manassa, Va., Miko of Clinton, Md., and Keith of Englewood; five nieces, Tiffany, Brittany and Makia of Greeleyville and Danielle and Rachel of Englewood; a maternal grandmother, Ida Joe Matthews of Greeleyville; and a paternal grandmother, Henrietta Burns of Camden.

He was preceded in death by a nephew, Omar.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at St. Asia Baptist Church in Greeleyville. The Revs. Amos Matthews, pastor, and James Matthews officiated, assisted by the Rev. Eddie Green.

Burial followed in Cowhead Cemetery in Salters.

Aaron Felder
Aaron Felder, 50, husband of Ellie Maxine Hayes Felder, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 18, 1951, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Mary Jane Thomas Felder and the late James Felder. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was formerly employed by Georgia Pacific for five years and Days Inn of Manning for 15 years. He was employed by Moore Oil Company and Acme Petroleum and Fuel Co. of Manning until his health failed.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include a son, Raymond Felder of Summerton; two daughters, Angela Hayes of Summerton and Erin Alexis Felder of the home; six brothers, Moses Felder, Preston Felder and John Felder of Bronx, N.Y., David Felder of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie Felder and Arthur Felder of Summerton; two sisters, Gardenia Young and Susan Felder of Brooklyn; two adopted grandchildren, Jausheanna Pendergrass and Tatiyanna Alexis Simmons; and two additional grandchildren.

Services were 1 p.m. Friday at the Greater St. Phillip RUME Church in Pinewood. The Rev. Warren Hatcher officiated, assisted by the Rev. Amos Hatcher.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Morris A. Hampton
Morris Alphonzo Hampton, 85, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born Nov. 20, 1916, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joseph Hampton and Ella William Hampton. He attended Goodwill Parochial School of Sumter County. In his youth, he joined Goodwill Presbyterian Church. He was called “Buster” by his family and friends. He lived in Atlantic City, N.J., for 67 years before he relocated to the Sumter community March 8, 2000. He was a retired employee of Atlantic City Medical Center in Atlantic City.

Survivors include two sisters, Angeline Williams of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Rosa Cooper Lewis of Fairfax, Va.; a sister-in-law, Vera H. Hampton of Mayesville; nine nieces, Mary Harvin of Sumter, Ellaree and Loretta Hampton of Mayesville, Vera M. Gardner of Scotland Neck, N.C., Ella F. Folly and Teresa Williams of Winston-Salem, Rosa M. Cooper of Baltimore, Juanita Wells of Adelphi, Md., and Leona Cousar of Beltsville, Md.; three nephews, the Rev. Carnell Hampton of Gable, and Harold Hampton and Nathaniel Hampton Jr. of Mayesville; and a number of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Nathaniel Hampton Sr.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Goodwill Presbyterian Church USA. The Rev. Richard Baxter, pastor, officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Presbyterian men of Goodwill Presbyterian Church served as pallbearers and the Goodwill Presbyterian women served as flower bearers.

John K. Johnson
John Kingwood Johnson, 76, husband of Thelma Huggins Johnson, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County and joined The Second Presbyterian Church at an early age. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy for six years during WWII. He was employed by People’s Natural Gas and retired from Sumter Casket Company.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Johnson of Columbia, Hammie Johnson of Queens, N.Y., and Joseph T. Johnson of Sumter; one daughter, Shirley L. Johnson of Sumter; two brothers, Issac D. Johnson and Robert M. Johnson of Sumter; two sisters, Dr. Lula A. Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., and Hattie B. Smith of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one son, Elwood Johnson.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at The Second Presbyterian Church USA. The Rev. Julia A. Prince officiated, assisted by Elders Frances D. Singleton and William Gamble.

Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery.

Junious C. Lee
WEST COLUMBIA — Junious Clyde Lee, 80, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002.

He was the son of the late Thomas Edward and Sadie Ethel Rawlinson Lee. Formerly of Alcolu, he was an area resident since 1945. He retired from J.C. Lee Builder Inc., and was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church. He was a loving brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all. Daddy, Granddaddy, “Flea,” Uncle Clyde, JC or Lee was the most unselfish, gentle and kind humanitarian. We will never know the many hearts and souls he touched through his kindness and generosity. He taught us all how to be a Christian, not only by his words but more so by his actions.

Born April 25, 1921, in Alcolu, he was fifth of eight children, he served proudly as a MP in the Air Force during WWII and then settled in West Columbia with his late wife, Lucy Butler Lee. He was a home builder and raised two daughters and two sons. He was a prominent figure in the Hook Avenue area, a community he built and cared for as much as his own family. He was actively involved in 40/8, American Legion, Ruritan and he was a 32nd Degree Shriner. He will be surely missed. His mark on our lives will live forever through his survivors and friends.

Survivors include a sister, Thelma Nash of Manning; two daughters, Lavie Lee Hallman of West Columbia and Theresa Lee King of Concord, N.C.; a son, Bernie C. Lee of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his special sweetheart, Audrey Wells; and his extended Hook Avenue family.

He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert “Buttons” Lee.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Brookland United Methodist Church. The Rev. Nelson Stokes officiated.

Burial followed in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Brookland United Methodist Church Building Fund, American Legion Post 79, Pineview Ruritan West Columbia or 40/8 #1211.

Alberta Wilson
Alberta Wilson, 62, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 10, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Wilson and Lelo Davis Wilson. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning. She was employed with the Central Coffee Shop in Manning for more than 27 years.

Survivors include a son, Henry Earl Wilson of Manning; three daughters, Diane Bright and Sharmane Anderson of Manning and Johnnie Mae Anderson of Decatur, Ga.; three sisters, Para Lee Wilson of Manning, Lillian Steve and her husband Benjamin of Charleston and Hattie Graham and her husband Larry of Lake City; and a nephew, Ricky Wilson.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church. The Revs. George P. Windley Sr., pastor, Sylvester Hicks, Henry McCray and Mitchell Adger officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Leroy D. Claycomb
Leroy Dean Claycomb, 65, husband of Kathy Pimley Claycomb, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002.

Born in Pickering, Mo., he was the son of the late Edna Mae and James Loris Claycomb. He graduated from Iowa State University with a Master’s degree in Business and Chemistry and was a U.S. Army veteran. He later retired as President and CEO of New Hampshire Medical Laboratory. An avid golfer and a lifetime member of the PGA, he was employed at the Wyboo Player’s Golf Course in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife include three stepdaughters, Hope Rice of Weare, N.H, Tammy Michael of Epson, N.H., and Heather Hebert of Manchester, N.H.; a stepson, Paul Lemay Jr. of Goffstown, N.H.; three grandchildren, Alex Rice, Monika Hebert and Maddison Hebert of New Hampshire; and a devoted dog, “Mickey” and cat, “Mr. Hogan.”

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Jean Claycomb.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wyboo Plantation Community Center.

Memorials may be made to The Player’s Course “Beautification Fund,” 300 Players Course Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Bessie Welch McElveen
Bessie Welch McElveen, 88, widow of Guy McElveen, died Friday, January 25, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Pressley and Mary Jane Gowdy Welch.

She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Jenkins McElveen and his wife, Peggy, of Sumter; two sisters, Christine Mixon and her husband, Andy, of Augusta, Ga. and Mary Beth Artlip of Columbia; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Welch, Wilber Welch and Durant Welch; two half brothers, McSwain Welch and Joe Welch; and a sister, Ila Mae McElveen.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Revs. Pete Mixon and Jim Baker officiating.

Burial followed in Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Eastside Baptist Church Building Fund, 701 Boulevard Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Willie T. Miller Sr.
Willie Troy Miller Sr., 82, husband of Margie Dixon Miller, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1920, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Temple Miller Sr. and Vinnie Mack Miller. He attended Rosenwald School at Mount Zion and was a graduate of South Carolina State College in masonry. He was a member of Mount Zion AME Church, where he served on the senior choir, men’s chorus, gospel train choir, trustee board and steward board. He was a member of the Carter-Sullivan American Legion Post No. 204 in Manning and was a founder of “The Gospel Four Quartet.” He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was honorably discharged.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, Lee Ernest Miller of Bronx, N.Y., Thomas Miller of Columbus, Ohio, and Edward Miller of Marietta, Ga.; an adopted son, Sammie L. Lesane of Manning; three daughters, Willie Mae Williams and Frances Ann Walker of Manning and Ellen Gray of Fayetteville, N.C.; an adopted daughter, Denise Nelson of Alcolu; seven brothers, the Rev. Sam Miller of Sumter, Aquila Miller of Denmark, Abraham Miller of Columbia, Temple Miller Jr., Shebhart Miller and Arnett Miller of Newport News, Va., and the Rev. Jonah Miller of Newark, N.J.; five sisters, Vinnie Graham of Newport News, Julia Simpson of Wilmington, N.C., Queen E. Young of Manning, Ernestine Jenkins of Charleston and Nettie White of Honolulu, Hawaii; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Troy Miller Jr.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion AME Church with the Rev. Manuel Fogel, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Sam Miller, O’Donald Dingle, Arnette Miller and Jonah Miller assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dinah M. Montgomery
Dinah McFadden Montgomery, 88, widow of Isaac Montgomery Sr., died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born Oct. 17, 1913, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Boston and Ella Linda Taylor McFadden. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was an active member. She was a member of the YMCA Lodge No. 24 and O.E.S. Queen of the South Chapter No. 304, Summerton.

Survivors include three sons, Isaac Montgomery Jr. of Summerton and Johnnie Montgomery and Edward Montgomery of Thomasville, N.C.; seven daughters, Susan Williams of Miami, Fla., Lottie Green of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mary Montgomery of Darlington, Dinah Prince of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ada Thomas of Thomasville, Queen Palmer of Columbia and Lillian Cain of Davis Station; four sisters, Lucille Briggs and Rhunett Edwards of Summerton and Dolly McFadden and Queen Holliday of Brooklyn; 40 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Jackson.

Services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiating and the Rev. Goode assisting. Burial followed in Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
