Jessie Dozier
Jessie Dozier, 71, widower of Bernice Gamble Dozier and Hennie Mae Whack Dozier, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at Jewish Nursing Home and Hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1930, in the Sugar Hill community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Essic “Sonny” Dozier and Estelle Johnson Dozier. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Progressive Church of Jesus Christ. He retired from the Hunt Point Produce Market of Bronx, N.Y., in the shipping and receiving department as a stevedore.

Survivors include two sons, Jessie Lee Gamble of St. Petersburg, Fla., and James Lee Dozier of Summerville; three daughters, JoAnn Sharpe and Mary Alice Dozier of Manning and Helen Campbell of Angelo, Texas ; four brothers, Nathaniel Dozier, Franklin Dozier and Leroy Conyers of New York and Raleigh Dozier of Manning; three sisters, Dora Mae Mack of Lake Forest, Calif., and Esther Mae Dozier and Annie Dell Dozier of Manning; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert H. Dozier, Windell Dozier and Thomas Dozier; and a sister, Thomasena Dozier.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Progressive Church of Jesus Christ with Bishop James B. Whack, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Eloise Pompey assisting.

Burial followed in St. Matthews Cemetery.

Moses Georgia Sr.
THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Moses Georgia Sr., 83, of Thomasville, N.C., died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Community General Hospital.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late Mary Brunson Georgia Williams and Joe Williams Sr. He was the widower of Silla Pearl Gibson Georgia.

Survivors include three sons, Moses Georgia Jr. of Trinity, N.C., Leroy Georgia of Thomasville and John Simmons of Summerton; five daughters, Inez G. Mitchell of Summerton, Betty G. Boggan of Thomasville, Maggie G. Simmons and Pearl G. Oliver of Trinity and Theresa Blake of Riverview, N.J.; three brothers, Johnny Lee Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joe Williams Jr. of Summerton; three sisters, Ida W. Gaymon of Pinewood, Mamie Nelson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Janie Wilds of Queens, N.Y.; six sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

John W. McCabe Sr.
CHARLESTON — John Walter McCabe Sr., 82, widower of Junaita Folley McCabe, died Sunday, February 3, 2002.

Born May 2, 1919, in Alcolu, he was the son of Edward and Annie Victoria McCabe. He was a retired member of Charleston Naval Shipyard Shop No. 72 and Fleet Reserve Chapter No. 50.

Survivors include three sons, John W. McCabe Jr. of Ladson, Charles Jackson McCabe of Spartanburg and Jerald Edward McCabe of Charleston; two daughters, Jeanette France of Spartanburg and Joana Haught of Summerville; seven sisters, Ruinette Chewning, Doris Campbell, Edna Lowder and Erma Prescott of Manning, Deraldine Cooper of Columbia, Merchline Richardson of Moncks Corner and Betty M. Roof of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stuhr’s West Ashley Chapel. Burial followed in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, S.C. 29406.

Robert O. Ridgill
POMARIA — Robert Odus Ridgill, 72, died Monday, February 4, 2002, at his home after an illness.

Born in High Point, N.C., he was the son of the late James Lee and Ruth Ward Ridgill. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he attended the University of South Carolina and Purdue University and prior to his retirement, was owner of Tosco Industrial Supply Co., and later Central Industrial Supply Co., both based in Columbia.

A member of the Acadia Masonic Lodge, Mr. Ridgill was a charter member of the Jamil Shrine Temple and Lodge 14 in Columbia. A trustee and one of the original founders of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Columbia, he served as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.

A respected leader in his field, Mr. Ridgill served on advisory Boards of Faultless Caster Co., Evansville, Ind.; Payson Caster Co., Curnee, Ill.; SKK Power Tool Co., Chicago, Ill.; Utica Tool Co., Orangeburg; and as an Advisory Board Member for Midlands Technical College in Columbia.

Active in the community prior to his illness, he served on the S.C. State Board of Education Advisory Boards, as a delegate for the S.C. Republican Party and as a Republican party precinct chairman for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Laura Winget Ridgill; two daughters, Deborah Kingry of Greenville and Denise Fowler of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Jared Miller, Laura Andrews, Jonathan Murray and Ashlee Fowler; a brother, James Lee Ridgill Jr. of Manning; three sisters, Ruby Ridgill Jacobs of Manning, Dora Ridgill Kinsey of Kiawah and Doris Ridgill Tatum of Laurinburg, N.C.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, S.C. 29202.

Rosa Lee Floyd Welch
Rosa Lee Floyd Welch, 73, of Turbeville died Friday, February 1, 2002, at a Florence hospital after an illness.

Born in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Calip and Dolly Barfield Floyd. She was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie McKenzie of New Zion; six sons, M.C. Welch, Donnie Ray Welch, Ronnie Dale Welch, Harris D. Welch, Carroll J. Welch and William T. Welch of Turbeville; three sisters, Ola Mae Feagin of Charleston, and Nina Culick and Annie Mae Culick of Lake City; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson A. Welch; a son, Aaron Nelson Welch; three sisters, Nellie Sims, Macy Parker and Pauline Floyd; and three brothers, Ernest Floyd, John Floyd and Buddy Floyd.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Sarah Bell Benjamin Bosier
PINEWOOD - Sarah Bell Benjamin Bosier, 65, widow of Frank Bosier Sr., died Thursday, February 7, 2002, at Faith Health Care Center in Florence.

Born Oct. 1, 1936, in Rimini, she was the daughter of the late William and Susanne Dow Benjamin.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Mt. Pleasant UME Church in her youth. She was a former employee of Hopewell Nursing Home and National Health Care in Sumter as a nursing assistant.

Survivors include a son, Frank Bosier Jr. of Pinewood; six daughters, Susan Sinkler, Sarah Mathis and Isabel Bosier of Pinewood, Carrie Mathis of Clarksville, Tenn., Barbara Carter of Baltimore and Loretta Bosier of Manning; three grandchildren she raised as her own, Latasha Bosier, Brian Bosier and Kimberly Bosier of Pinewood; a sister, Carrie M. Parker of Pinewood; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Bosier.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant UME Church with James O. Robinson, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Jonathan Smith, Roosevelt Boyd, Joseph Pringle and elder Jackie Holland assisting.

Burial followed in Antioch UME Church Cemetery.

Jeffrey V. Taylor Jr.
Jeffrey V. Taylor Jr., 6 weeks old, died Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 3, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, he was the son of Jeffrey V. Taylor Sr. and Sharon Kinder Taylor.

Survivors besides his parents of the home include his maternal grandmother, Hulean M. Kinder of Manning; his paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor of Alcolu; and a sister, Jazmine M. Garner of the home.

He was preceded in death by twin brothers, Joshua and Caleb Taylor; a sister, Shenice Taylor; and two other siblings.

Services were noon Friday at Apostolic Revival Center United Pentecostal Church with Pastor David W. Gleason Sr. officiating and the Revs. Edward Harrington Sr. and W.L. Clayton assisting.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Lila P. Thames
Lila Mae Pack Thames, 79, widow of Clarence Fope Thames, died Sunday, February 10, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born Dec. 17, 1922, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Carl Ben Pack and Teresa Hodge Pack. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty T. Watts of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Clarence Ann “C.A.” Jordan of Cayce; a brother, Kenneth Pack of Sumter; three sisters, Audrey Wadford, Harriet Hodge and Jessie Tutton of Sumter; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Ben Pack Jr. and Earl Pack; and a sister, Elizabeth Hodge.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold P. Greene officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 2445 Old Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Jake Dow
Jake Dow, 44, died Friday, February 15, 2002, at his home.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Green Dow.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Ann Garner of Columbia; two step-sisters, Ethel Lee Bowman of Summerton and Lena Brown of Columbia; two step-brothers, Ray and James Sanders of Summerton; four aunts, Earline “Emm” Canty, Alice Junious and Mary Ann Green of Summerton and Victoria Green of Wilmington, N.C.; an uncle, Will Green of Philadelphia, Pa.; two special friends, Cat Jackson and Dorothy Wilson of Summerton; and a host of cousins and loyal friends.

Services were 3:30 Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant U.M.E. Church with the Rev. James Robinson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Clarence W. McKinney
Clarence William McKinney, 91, widower of Venus Benbow McKinney and Anna McKinney, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002, in Manning.

Born March 15, 1910, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Eddie and Caroline Felder McKinney. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he attended St. Matthews Baptist Church in Jordan and later became a member of the Household of Faith Holiness Church in Camden. He retired from Georgia-Pacific.

Survivors include a daughter, Oree M. Richburg of Manning; an adopted son, Frank McKinney of New Jersey; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sammie Lee McKinney; and two sisters, Brenda McKinney and Sarah Lee Servance.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Williams officiating, and the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Etherleen Bethune, Dennis Jeffcoat and Pastor E. Alston assisting.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.
