Margaret B. White
Margaret Ruth Barnes White, 71, widow of Charles W. White, died Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Mariner Health West.

Born Aug. 7, 1930, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Sam N. and Nealy Rhodus Barnes. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Vicki Goff and Pat Lowder of Manning and Gail Stanley of Columbia; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in Clarendon Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles L. Stroud officiating.

Walter K. Floyd
Lake City - Walter Kenneth Floyd, 44, husband of Lisha Webster Floyd, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 15, 1957, in Lake City, he was the son of the late William Horace Floyd and Elizabeth Tedder Floyd. He was an investigator for the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Dept., and a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Lake City include a daughter, Kena Floyd of Lake City; a son, Bryan Floyd of Lake City; two brothers, Cy Floyd of Pennsylvania and Reedy Floyd of Lake City; two sisters, Myra Tyler and Glenda Williamson of Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Bobby Floyd and Charlie Salter officiating.

Burial followed in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Michael Floyd, Jimmy Lee, Billy “Rooster” Floyd, Chris Springs, Freddie Floyd, Avery Beard and Bert Floyd served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were all Clarendon County Law Enforcement Officers.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Richard J. Harness
Richard Jasper Harness, 72, widower of Dorothy Gloria Dodd Harness, died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born in LaBelle, Mo., he was the son of the late Richard Lafayette and Daisy Christina Adams Harness. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. He served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years. He later worked at Tuomey Hospital in the maintenance department for 17 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Pauline Brush of Alamo, Texas and Mary Lou Dodge of Pryor, Okla.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel J. Carboy officiating.
Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 216 E. Liberty St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Roy T. "Tom" Hobby Sr.
Roy T. “Tom” Hobby, Sr., 77, husband of Martha “June” Hobby, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born July 28, 1924, in Decatur, Ga., he was a son of the late Roy Deneke and Madolyn Winter Hobby. He was a retired executive with Southern Bell Telephone Company, an Episcopalian, a Rotarian, a member of the Exchange Club, an avid youth sports coach, a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a WWII U.S. Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife of Summerton, two sons, Roy T. Hobby Jr. of Conway and Raymond D. Hobby of Newberry; two daughters, Robin Mullis of Charlotte, N.C., and Rhonda D. Hobby of Summerton; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one nephew; and one niece. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Breeding.

Memorial services were 6 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of America, 302 Ridgefield Court, Asheville, N.C. 28806.

John M. Holladay
Goose Creek - John Matthew Holladay, 58, died Sunday, February 17, 2002, at his home in Goose Creek.

Born December 9, 1943, in Manning, he was the son of the late Charles Carroll Poole and Pina Holladay. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Marie Holladay of Goose Creek; two brothers, Jasper Carroll Holladay of Goose Creek and Ben S. Holladay of Manning; two sisters, Agnes Geddings of Manning and Doris Holladay Potter of Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas .

Services were 5 p.m. Sunday in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Morris Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Virginia W. Mathis
Virginia Webb Mathis, 80, widow of John W. “Junior” Mathis Jr., died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late James Frank and Pearl Hudson Webb. She was educated in Florence County schools and received her training as an LPN at McLeod Infirmary where she was employed for a number of years. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church and the Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, John William (Yana) Mathis III of Manning; three daughters, Jenny Lynn (Will) Mann of Chapel Hill, N.C., Gay (Warren) Jeffords of Lamar and Wendy (Dan) Oates of Simpsonville; a half-sister, Molly Mason of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday in Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville.

Catherine E. Powell
Catherine Elise Powell, 76, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Walter Wheeler Floyd and Ettie Elizabeth Driggers Floyd. She was a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Ladies Auxiliary and Sunday school class. She was a charter member of New Hope Christian Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda P. Phillips of New Zion and Deborah Stone and her husband Earl of Olanta; a sister, Winnie Mae Bagnal of Turbeville; four brothers, the Rev. Carnell Floyd, Benjamin Floyd, Adrion Floyd and David Floyd of New Zion; two grandchildren, Jamie Phillips and Rachel Stone; and a special friend, Daisy McGrew of Olanta.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in New Hope Christian Church Cemetery.

Jefferson M. Davis
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Jefferson M. Davis, 73, husband of Faith Gibson Davis, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home in Summerton.

Born May 11, 1928, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Washington B. Davis and Ida Morrison Davis. He was a 1950 graduate of The Citadel in Charleston. He was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where he was very active. He spent 22 years in the U.S. Army and Army Security Agency, serving in the Korean Conflict with military tours both abroad and stateside. Upon his return to Summerton, he established the Davis Insurance Agency and was an active volunteer fireman for 22 years. He served as the magistrate judge of Manning for 16 years.

Survivors besides his wife of 50 years, who is originally from Charlotte, N.C., include a son, Michael F. Davis, and his wife, Cynthia K., of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, H. Morrison Davis of Summerton; a sister, May Davis Tindal of Pinewood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Summerton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carolyn R. Malphrus officiated, assisted by the Rev. Mark A. Altman.

Burial followed in the family Benbow Cemetery.

William B. Davis, Robert Davis, Jim Darby, Jon Ducworth, David Tindal and Davis Mitchum served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church, The Citadel Military College of S.C. or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 2650-A Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Martha Braxton Kitts
Martha Braxton Kitts, 86, widow of Leria O. Kitts, died Thursday, March 7, 2002.

Born Oct. 1, 1915 in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Patrick Braxton Sr. and Katie Garrett Braxton. She was a retired seamstress and was of the Baptist faith.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Friday in the Manning Cemetery.

Olivia G. Outlaw
Olivia Rydonia Gibson Outlaw, 85, wife of Oscar DuBose “O.D.” Outlaw, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John Rollins Gibson and Emily Elizabeth Stone Gibson. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include a son, John Daniel Outlaw and his wife, Lynne, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Cleo Elizabeth Childress and her husband, Philip V., of Spartanburg; a brother, High Elridge Gibson of Hartsville; a sister, Lila Mae Boyce of Sumter; and a grandchild.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Bruce Sayre and Jim Johnston officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Buddy Robinson, Fritz LeGrand, Johnny McLeod, L.E. Martin, Jim Price and John Bailes served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 Board St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Pernese Cantey
Pernese Cantey, 87, widow of Joseph Cantey, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home.

Born June 1, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Antonio Smith Conyers. In her youth, she was baptized and joined St. Mark Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined her husband at New Hope AME Church and later joined Calvary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities until her health failed. She was a member of the Sunday school, senior choir, vacation Bible school and deaconess board. She was the president of the senior missionary society for 49 years.

Survivors include a son, Joe Louis Cantey of Pinewood; a daughter, Christine Darling of Farmville, Va.; five adopted children, Hattie, Woodrow and Evelyn Johnson of Pinewood, Esther H. Briggs of Manning and Sheila H. Snoddy of Spartanburg; a sister, Wilhemena Marshall of Philadelphia; an adopted sister, Carrie Harvin of Pinewood; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of aunts, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.L. Sanders officiating along with the Revs. O.J. Hannah, C. Richburg and J. Pringle assisting.

Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
