Linwood T. Franklin
Linwood Theodore Franklin, 62, husband of Neomia Mellette Franklin, died Monday, September 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 11, 1938, in the Westminster community of Clarendon County, he was the son of William H. Franklin and the late Ruby James Franklin Taylor.

He attended Westminster Church and later became a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He attended the Westminster Church School and graduated from Manning Training High School.

Survivors besides his wife and father include a stepson, Davis Farmer of Sumter; a foster son, Toney Mellette of Sumter; a daughter, Tonya Franklin of Sumter; a brother, Bennie Lee Franklin of Sumter; two sisters, Shirley Pack and Gloria J. McFadden of Sumter; a foster sister, Daisy Blanding of Sumter; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Franklin; and two brothers, James Franklin and Amos Franklin.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Alcolu with the Rev. Dennis Brock officiating and Dr. Ralph Canty Sr. assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mary B. Freeman

Mary Alice Brown Lawrence Freeman, 81, widow of Booker Freeman, died Sunday, September 2, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 30, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Felix Brown and Ida Chaviss Brown. She was a graduate of Manning Technical Training School. In her youth, she joined Ebenezer Baptist Church and later joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church of Manning. She was a retired domestic engineer.

She was first married to the late Moses Lawrence Sr.

Survivors include four nieces, Shirley B. Holloman and Barbara Hines of Hampton, Va., Ethel Brunson of Newport News, Va., and Sarah B. Starling of Jacksonville, Fla.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Brunson and Bertha Nazareth; two brothers, Joseph Brown and Henry Brown; and a son, Moses Lawrence Jr.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with Minister Albert Starling officiating and the Rev. James Brown assisting.

Martha W. Gibson

Martha Ruth Walters Gibson, 80, widow of James Gibson Sr., died Saturday, August 25, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born April 22, 1921, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Alma Cuttino Walters. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Society, the adult choir, Deaconess Board and adult Sunday school.

Survivors include four sons, James Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., Willie Edward Gibson of Manning; Timothy Gibson of Troy, N.Y., and Mickey Gibson of Columbia; five daughters, Lucille Gibson and Gloria Brown of Columbia, Betty Gamble and Brenda Wilson of Myrtle Beach and Ida Betterson of Bronx, N.Y.; five sisters, Lila Mae Daniels, Dorothy Bradley, Sarah McBride and Ella Pearson of Sumter and Virginia Gibson of Manning; 21 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, George Gibson; and two daughters, Ruth Ann Gibson and Barbara Bogier.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Melvin Daniels officiating and Ministers Stevie Walters and Myron Wilson and the Revs. Sylvester Hicks and Henry Mitchell assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rebecca J. Marion

Rebecca Geneva Jones Marion, 77, died Thursday, August 30, 2001.

Born May 27, 1924, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Zero and Lillie Conyers Jones. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior and gospel choirs, YWCA, Community Missionary, church clerk, vice president of Missionary Society, adult Sunday school teacher, president of union and member of the executive board of the Sumter Association. She was a retired employee of D & H Barbecue of Manning.

Survivors include a son, Bennie Jones of Boston, Mass.; two daughters, Kathy Reed and Betty Richardson of Manning; a sister, Elizabeth Smith of Corona, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Celestine Marion of Columbia; a niece she raised as her own, Lillie Ann Miller of Manning; and a grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Marion Jr. and Thomas Marion; a brother, Albertus Jones; and a sister, Francis Simmons.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerial Dingle, pastor, officiating and the Revs. O’Donald Dingle and Warren Pierce and Minster Cheryl Graham assisting.

Burial followed in State Cemetery.

Ephsie A. Miller

Ephsie A. Miller, 94, widow of Ulysses Miller, died Monday, September 4, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1906, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Allen McKnight and Julia Parson McKnight. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Taw Caw Baptist Church in her youth. While living in New York, she married the late Benjamin Adamson. When she returned home, she married the late Ulysses Miller.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Marie Rose; a step-grandson, Victor Rose; five step-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Nina Thames Bagnal
Nina Thames Bagnal, 86, widow of Robert L. Bagnal, died Sunday, September 16, 2001, at her home in Florence.

Born Sept. 19, 1914, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Jesna Tobias Thames. She was a retired bookkeeper for Burgess-Brogdon in Sumter, a member of Dawsey United Methodist Church in Florence and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Snowden and Agnes Folk of Florence; two sisters, Ada Carraway of Manning and Bertha Lowrimore of Sumter; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to House of Hope.

Moses Carroway Sr.
Moses “Sanko” Carroway Sr., 81, widower of Jessie Scott Carroway, died Thursday, September 13, 2001, at Hopewell Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 20, 1920, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Freddie Carroway and Queen Gamble Carroway. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, he joined Cypress Fork AME Church and served as a member of the trustee board and the senior choir. He was also a member of the YMCA and a retired employee of Georgia-Pacific Inc.

Survivors include a son, Robert Carroway of Sumter; two stepsons, Gregory Houston of Atlanta, Ga., and Tommy Houston of Sumter; three daughters, Sylvia Davis of Oxford, N.C., Emma Carroway of Greedmoor, N.C., and Sharon Carroway of Sumter; three sisters, Lillie May Carroway of Alcolu, Cora Lee Tanner of Bronx, N.Y. and Mary Lee Jones of Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Moses Carroway Jr. and James Carroway; and a brother, Matthew Carroway.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Cypress Fork AME Church with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, officiating and the Revs. Dennis Davis, Friendly Gadsen and Franklin McCants assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Norwood E. Hodge
Norwood Ervin Hodge, 35, died Monday, September 17, 2001, at his home in Manning.

Born May 20, 1966, in Manning, he was the son of Clarence Ervin Hodge and Sarah Elizabeth DuBose Hodge. He was of the Baptist faith.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Hugh M. Richbourg
Hugh McDonald “Mac” Richbourg, 64, husband of Inez Dority Richbourg, died Saturday, September 22, 2001, at Bernardin Hospice House in Columbia.

Born Oct. 20, 1936, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Louis R. and Bessie Graham Richbourg. He was a retired land surveyor for the S.C. Highway Department, a member of the S.C. National Guard and a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three daughters, Cathy Reinstra and Susan Milam of Sumter and Linda Loss of Edgewater, Md.; two brothers, Robert G. Richbourg of Summerton and Francis L. “Frank” Richbourg of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Diane M. Richbourg of Sumter; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Richbourg.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Broomall officiating.

Memorials may be made to Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 203, Pinewood, S.C. 29125 or to the American Cancer Society.

Julious A. Washington
Julious Allen Washington , 62, widower of Juanita China Washington , died Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 15, 1939, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late George Allen Washington and Loubertha Ceasar Washington . He was a graduate of Manning Training High School and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include four brothers, Lester Washington of Miami, Fla., Andrella Washington of San Diego, Calif., Robert Washington of Sarasota, Fla., and George L. Washington of the home; two sisters, Camilla Washington of Sumter and Julia C. Burrell of Bronx, N.Y.; and a niece who was raised as a sister, Bobbie Ceasar of the home.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Revs. William Jones Jr., pastor, and Jonathan Anderson officiating.

Burial followed in Francis Cemetery.
