Jessie M. Bennett
Jessie Mae Bennett, 54, wife of Alonza “Big Tank” Bennett, died Friday, October 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 31, 1947, in Essex County, Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of Heneritta P. Richardson and the late Lamar Richardson. She attended Newark public schools. She was a member of Oaks AME Church, where she was a choir member and stewardess. She was employed as a cook with several food service establishments in Clarendon County.

Survivors besides her husband and mother include four sons, Alonza Bennett Jr. of Summerton, Lamar W. Bennett of Astill, George D. Bennett of Smyrna, Del. and Benjamin Bennett of Salisbury, N.C.; two daughters, Jannetta and Jessica Bennett of Spartanburg; 10 brothers, Bennett Richardson, Thomas L. Palmer, Thomas Palmer and William Palmer of Newark, Willie Richardson of Swansea, Harold Johnson of Pinewood, Robert Palmer of Washington , D.C., Richard Lawson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Eddie Lee Palmer and Windell Palmer of Summerton; nine sisters, Victoria Ortiz of the home, Audrey Johnson of Newark, Janice Martin of Brooklyn, Sandra Maddox, Georgeann Johnson, Heneritta Tindal, Sarah Jones and Patricia Richardson of Summerton and Hattie Jonah of Irvington, N.J.; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cassandra Bennett.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Scott’s Branch High School with the Rev. Ronnie Huggins officiating along with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, the Rev. Silas Spann and the Rev. Marco Johnson assisting.

Burial followed in Santee AME Church cemetery.

Alphonso Conyers
Alphonso Conyers, 56, husband of Eloise Stukes Conyers, died Friday, October 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 16, 1944, in the Halleytown section of Clarendon County, he was the son of Corine Martin Conyers and the late Deacon George Conyers Sr. He was a graduate of Manning Training School, Central Carolina Technical College and Florence-Darlington Technical College. In his youth, he joined Mt. Chapel Baptist Church. He was retired from Cooper Tools of Sumter and had his own business, Manufacturing Outsourcing Solutions.

Survivors besides his mother and wife of the home include a son, Alphonso Vidal Conyers of Columbia; three daughters, Shaneki Iasha Conyers Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Teyanna Monique Conyers of the home and Pamela Denise Conyers-Wade of Fort Bragg, N.C.; five brothers, Leroy Conyers of Waycross, Ga., Ulysess Conyers, Eugene Conyers and Marcellus Conyers of Manning and Richard Conyers of Sumter; a sister, Creola Morgan of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George Conyers Jr.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. O.J. Hannah, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. G.W. Pugh and Alfred D. Heyward and Minister Ranzy McFadden assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Members of the Manning Training School class of 1965 served as pallbearers and flower bearers.

Arthur E. Conyers
Arthur Eli Conyers, 62, husband of Rozenia Parker Conyers, died Monday, October 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 10, 1938, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Arthur Conyers and Mellison Caldwell Conyers. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, joined St. Mark Baptist Church. He was employed by Georgia Pacific Co. before he retired in 1982. He served as president of the Furniture Workers of America local 273 for a number of years and was also a member of the International F and AM Masons.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Wilbur Conyers, Alvin Conyers, Michael Conyers, Rodney Conyers and Elroy Conyers; three daughters, Melissa Conyers, Angela Edwards and Felicia Rose; a foster sister, Margaret Williams; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Alfonso Conyers and Blease Conyers.

Services were 3 p.m. Friday at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating, and Elder Johnson, Evangelist Helen Prince, Minister Evangel Barnes and the Rev. L.W. Barnes assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Julia H. Lemon
NEWARK, DEL. - Julia Hammett Lemon, 55, wife of Franklin D. Lemon, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at her home.

Born Oct. 25, 1946, in the Cypress Fork community, she was the daughter of Frederick D. and Celia E. Hammett. She attended Manning Training School and was a 1965 graduate of Chester High School. She also attended Keystone Business School and was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses for more than 25 years. She was employed by DuPont-Stine and Haskell Laboratories as a medical secretary for 15 years.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include a daughter, Pamela F. Lemon; four brothers, James Hammett, William Hammett, Willie Eugene Hammett and Alphonso Hammett; two sisters, Alva Turner and Bertha Hagans; and two grandchildren, Lester E. “Tre” Macayle III and Evan Macayle.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonya Smith.

Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Newark.

Burial followed in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

William J. Maggs Jr.
William Joseph Maggs Jr., 74, husband of Elaine Vucco Maggs, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001.

Born Sept. 22, 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of Mary Bailey Maggs and the late William J. Maggs Sr. He was a retired tool and dye maker for Delphi Packard Electric, a division of General Motors Corp., where he worked for 38 years. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran.

George Wilson Sr.
George Wilson Sr., 76, widower of Ella Mae McBride Wilson, died Friday, October 26, 2001, at the home of his daughter.

Born May 5, 1925, in the Live Oak community, he was the son of the late Suley Wilson Sr. and Julia Weeks Wilson. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, joined Rock Hill Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include three sons, Mikel Wilson and Norris Wilson of Alcolu and George Wilson Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Julia M. Epps of the home; two brothers, John Wilson of Sumter and Abe Weeks of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Cleo Lloyd and Ester Brown of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Peggy Wilson and Rosa Lee Wilson; and two brothers, Frank Wilson and Billy Wilson.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Terrence J. House
Terrence Jerod “Gigga” House, 19, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 24, 1981, in the Davis Station community, he was the son of Overton House Sr. and Carolyn Oliver House. He was a 2000 graduate of Denmark Technical College.

Survivors besides his parents include two brothers, Leonard O. House of Summerton and Overton House Jr. of Irmo; two sisters, Wanda House of Davis Station and Gabrielle D. House of Atlanta, Ga.; and his companion, Myisha Hammett of Davis Station.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday in the Scott’s Branch High School gymnasium with Brother Charles White officiating and Brother Henry Conyers assisting.

Burial followed in Hopkins Cemetery.

Sammie James III
Sammie James III, 63, died Saturday, October 27, 2001, in Orangeburg.

Born July 8, 1938, in Columbia, he was the son of the late Samuel Allen James and Julia Fairy James. He was a 1956 graduate of Manchester High School in Pinewood. He attended New York City College and received a degree from Santa Monica City College in California. In his youth, he attended Antioch AME Church in Rimini and later joined St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Orangeburg, where he served as junior warden. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed with the New York Transit System, Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif., and Federal Mogul in Summerton. He was also a farmer and a trucker.

Survivors include two daughters, Elyse Marie James of Columbia and Kellee Tamika James of Charleston; six brothers, Wiley James, Washington Carver James, the Rev. Sayman James and Wilkie James of Pinewood, William Penn James of Orangeburg and Harold James of Manning; four sisters, Julia Boyd, Ruth Diane James and Florence Knight of Pinewood and Alice Cummings of Summerville; a devoted companion, Dr. Lillie B. Glover of Orangeburg; and three granddaughters.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Julian M. Clarke, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Antioch AME Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Annie B. Dingle
Annie Laura Billups Dingle, 62, widow of Lincoln Dingle, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System.

Born Oct. 14, 1939, in Manning, she was the daughter of Alice Sweat Billups and the late John Billups Sr. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Mount Zero Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her mother of Manning include two sons, Lincoln Dingle Jr. and Glenn Dingle of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Lois Carter and Shirley Anderson of Miami; four brothers, Thomas Billups of Miami and John Billups Jr., Leon Billups and James Lee Billups of Manning; five sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Miami, and Jessie Kelly, Patsy Murphy, Janie Nesbitt and Stella Lemmon of Manning; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stephon Dingle.

Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at Mitchell Memorial Chapel. Burial followed in Hollywood Memorial Park.

Sue E. Epps
Sue Ella Epps, 87, widow of Edgar Hugh Jackson Epps, died Friday, November 9, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 10, 1914, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late William Halzy Baker and Rebecca Estelle Cantey Baker. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the WMU.

Survivors include a son, William Hugh Epps of Alcolu; a daughter, Barbara Ann Epps Hamilton of Kinston, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Arliss Jackson Epps; and a grandson, Edgar Lecroy Epps.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Treaster officiating. Burial followed in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Lillian P. Godfrey
FLORENCE -- Lillian Almeta Pace Godfrey, 92, widow of Edgar Clarence Godfrey, died Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Heritage Home of Florence.

Born Sept. 11, 1909, in Johnson County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Oscar Temple and Lizzie Pittman Pace. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as outreach leader of her Sunday school class.

Survivors include four sons, Edgar Clarence “Zeke” Godfrey and his wife, Lucille, of Sumter, George Edward “Buck” Godfrey and his wife, Mary Ann, of Florence, James Curtis “Shorty” Godfrey and his wife, Lynelle, and Jackie Glenn “Bubba” Godfrey and his wife, Janis, of Summerton; two daughters, Algie Godfrey Banks and Shirley Godfrey Isenhower of Florence; a son-in-law, James Ellis Banks of Florence; two sisters, Flossie McKinney of Cameron, N.C., and Alberta Richardson of North Charleston; two sisters-in-law, Callie Pace and Johnsie Pace of Lillington, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Godfrey Broach; four brothers; and a sister.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. W.L. Collins, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, Hospice of the Pee Dee or Heritage Home of Florence.
