William L. Summers

William Labon Summers, 74, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born April 7, 1927, in Batesburg, he was the son of the late Sidney and Ester Kesler Summers. He was first married to the late Mary Ruth Carter Summers, and then to the late Dorothy T. Summers. He was retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter, served in the National Guard, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Broome of Lexington, Patricia Childers of Maury, N.C., and Connie Langley and Debbie Brogdon of Manning; two sons, Edward Summers of Columbia and John Summers of Manning; a stepson, Gene Griffin of Aiken; a stepdaughter, Lisa Mitchum of Manning; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a special friend, Mark Russell of Columbia.

Services were 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Earline W. Davis
Earline Wilson Davis, 52, wife of Walter H. Davis, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at her home in Summerton.

Born Jan. 12, 1949, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Mary Howard Wilson. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church in Vance.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a son, Donnie Ray Bland of Summerville; a daughter, Charlene Wilson Anderson of Moncks Corner; four brothers, Earl Wilson, Jack Wilson, Roger Wilson and Willie Wilson of Charleston; two sisters, Bobbie Jo Wilson and Barbara Jean Wilson of Charleston; and a number of grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

George Harvin Jr.
George “Sonny” Harvin Jr., 51, husband of Lillian Epps Harvin, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Beth-Isreal Hospital.

Born June 30, 1950, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was the son of George F. Harvin and the late Hulene Lemon Harvin. He was a 1968 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and attended Voorhees College. In his youth, he joined Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station. He was a former employee of the New Jersey Transit Authority.

Survivors besides his father of Manning and wife of Irvington, N.J., include two sons, James Anthony Harvin of Irvington and Eric Yelverton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Tamara Lynette Harvin of Irvington; two brothers, Willie J. Harvin of Manning and Alvin Harvin of Orlando, Fla.; four sisters, Helen D. Harvin of Washington , Ethel L. Dingle of Hiram, Ga., and Lottie Harvin and Cynthia Shell of Columbia; and a grandchild.

Services were 10 a.m. Friday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Newark.

Burial followed in Glendale Cemetery.

Lillian J. McCall
Lillian James McCall, 92, widow of James McCall, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at her home in Rimini.

Born March 1, 1909, in the St. Paul community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Wash and Eliza James. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Liberty Hill AME Church. After marriage, she joined Antioch AME Church and later Antioch UME Church.

Survivors include an adopted son, Duwine Sinkler of Sumter; an adopted daughter, Dale Sinkler of the home; and two foster children, Sally Johnson and Marvalyn Brunson.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Antioch UME Church with the Revs. Jonathan Smith, pastor, Evelyn F. Dukes, Albert Thompson, Malachi Duncan and Amos Hatcher officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Missionaries of Antioch UME Church served as pallbearers.

Charles L. McCord
Charles L. McCord Sr., 75, husband of Sara Harrington McCord, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Rev. Lewis Bryson McCord and Mary Harrelson McCord. He was retired from S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation, a graduate of Presbyterian College, a WWII Army Air Corp veteran, and a member of Presbyterian Church of Manning. He was active with the S.C. Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include three sons, Charles McCord Jr. of Manning, John William McCord of James Island and Richard Lawrence McCord of Pinopolis; two daughters, Linda McCord Taylor of Manning and Carol McCord Player of Columbia; two brothers, John Kenneth McCord of Manning and William Jerome McCord of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services were 11 a.m. Tuesday in Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Dr. Paul Sullivan and the Rev. Bob Korn officiating.

Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Ephriam McLeod
Ephriam McLeod, 84, widower of Doris Brown McLeod, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Sam and Bessie Geddings McLeod. He was a retired dairy farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Black McLeod of Summerton and Joseph McLeod of Sumter; two daughters, Corrine Bolen of Lexington and Sissie McLeod of Sumter; a brother, Jobie McLeod of Sumter; two sisters, Mel Ingram of Darlington and Edith Barwick of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis and S.W. McLeod.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Friday in Calvary Nazarene Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Ephriam McLeod Memorial Fund.

James Pearson Jr.
James “Bubba” Pearson Jr., 56, husband of Carolyn W. Pearson, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born July 30, 1944, in Sumter County, he was the son of Lillie Mae Pearson and the late James Pearson Sr. He attended Sumter County public schools and was employed at Brogdon Farms for many years.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Travis Pearson, Ricky Pearson and Dominique Pearson of Sumter; six brothers, J.C. Pearson and David L. Pearson of Manning and Thomas Pearson, Clary Pearson, Christopher Pearson and Ike Pearson of Sumter; three sisters, Janie L. Williams, Elizabeth Sweat and Loretta Lloyd of Sumter; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a bother, Clarence Pearson.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. W.A. Wright, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Pearson Chapel AME Church.

Pinkney J. Pearson
Pinkney J. Pearson, 86, husband of Mary Lee Pearson, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001.

Born May 15, 1915, in Davis Station, he was the son of the late Henry H. and Lily Ann Tindal Pearson.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Peter Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six daughters, Maxine Pearson and Ollie Pearson of Brooklyn, Thelma Henderson of Hollywood, Fla., Patsy Hiller of Sumter, Helen Williams of Baltimore, and Lily Owens of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; a brother, Vander Pearson of Baltimore; a sister, Ellen Dixon of Miami; 26 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers and three sisters.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ in Davis Station with Elder Floyd Bridge officiating and Elder Donnie Chapman, pastor, assisting. Burial followed in Carolina-Johnson Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Route 5, Box 314, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Willie T. Atkinson
Willie T. Atkinson, 82, of Summerton, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 15, 1918, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Doc and Estelle Hatfield Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson enjoyed fishing and loved to play the harmonica. He was also very good with his hands.

Survivors include four sons, Dickie (Annie) Atkinson, Willie James (Dell) Atkinson, and Randy (Neva) Atkinson of Charleston and Keith (Charmin) Atkinson of Harleyville; three daughters, Ruby Rhame of Indiana, Alice (James) Thomas of Summerton and Shelvey (Ron) Shuler of Summerville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001, in the Lamar Chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Fair Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Annie L. Dow
Annie L. Oliver Dow, 91, widow of Elliot Dow, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at her home.

Born March 12, 1910, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Damon Oliver Jr. and Harriet Oliver. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a lifelong member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church. She was a farmer and domestic worker.

Survivors include a daughter, Robertha Oliver Dow of the home; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at New Light Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Sam Whack Jr. officiating and Evangelist Deloris Parker and the Rev. Clifford Gaymon assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Earl Floyd
Earl Floyd, 68, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at a Florence Hospital after an extended illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late John Doris Floyd and Maybelle Gaymon Floyd. He was a retired machinist, farmer and a member of Bullhead Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Gibbons Floyd of Turbeville; two sons, Jayson Earl Floyd and Joey Randell Floyd of Columbia; two sisters, Judy Floyd and Burnette Brown of Lake City; two brothers, the Rev. Jimmy Floyd of Socastee and Thomas Floyd of Sumter; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Valynn Floyd.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday at Turbeville First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Socastee P.H. Church or the Turbeville, First Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
