Warren E. McFadden
Deacon Warren Ezekiel McFadden, 71, of Beaufort, husband of 42 years to Maggie B. McFadden, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1929, in the Westminister area of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ezekiel McFadden and Lucille McFadden-Hudson. After the death of his mother, he was raised by an aunt and uncle, Sarah Ann and Lucius McFadden. He attended the Westminister and Congruity Community Presbyterian Schools. Following high school graduation, he attended Morris College in Sumter. In his youth, he joined Westminister Presbyterian Church.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for 25 years, retiring as a sergeant first class in 1975. During his military career, he received numerous awards, medals and citations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with four awards, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Korea and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Expert Badge with M-16 Rifle Bar. After retirement from the U.S. Army, he was employed by the Beaufort Gazette for 17 years and retired in 1994. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was installed as a deacon on June 14, 1998. He served as a member of the senior choir, male chorus, Sunday school, food ministry, Ministry of Brotherhood and the Elder’s Ministry. He was a member of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge No. 144 of Alcolu, Samuel Bush American Legion Post 207 and S.J. Bampfield Elks Lodge No. 584.

Survivors besides his wife of Beaufort include a daughter and son-in-law, Anita M. and Lorenzo Parker of Beaufort; two grandchildren, Megan Brianna and Lorenzo Bryce Parker of Beaufort; three brothers, James Hudson of Opa Locks, Fla., Sampson Hudson of Augusta, Ga., and Hartwell McFadden of Philadelphia, Pa.; and four sisters, Martha Dukes and Mary McFadden of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary White of Philadelphia and Marion Ladson of Sicklerville, N.J.

Services were noon Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors.

Nannie T. Mitchell
Nannie Templeton Mitchell, 88, widow of John Lewis Mitchell, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at her home.

Born April 25, 1913, in Barnwell County, she was the daughter of the late James Gideon Templeton and Margaret Evans Templeton. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, John Vincent “Cheeta” Mitchell of King, N.C., and Wayne “Pee Wee” Mitchell of Manning; a daughter, Jane “Priss” Schwartz of Manning; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Lewis “Jimmy” Mitchell.

Graveside services were 4 p.m. Thursday in the Manning Cemetery with Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating.

Theadius Osborne
Theadius “Bully” Osborne, 67, husband of Delores Becker Osborne, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at a Seminole hospital.

Born April 1, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Charlie Warren Osborne and Margaret Newton Osborne. He was the owner of Bill Osborne Enterprise in Largo, Fla.

Survivors besides his wife of Seminole include a son, William Ray “Billy” Osborne; two daughters, Deborah Kennedy and her husband Ed, and Sue Alford and her husband, Randy, of Largo; two brothers, Charlie B. Osborne of North Tonawanda, N.Y., and James A. “Sonny” Prescott of Sumter; two sisters, Ima Lee Jones of Sumter and Betty Lawter of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Dorothy M. Wheeler
Dorothy M. Wheeler, 54, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 15, 1946, in Timmonsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Herrington Wheeler. She attended St. Charles and Sumter public schools. In her youth, she joined Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church and later, Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She was an employee of Sumter Retirement Home, now known as Carriage House, for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Towana Wheeler of Sumter and Myra Jordan of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a sister, Patricia Cocklin of Sumter; an adopted sister, Lillie Mae Ransom of Baltimore, Md.; and a grandchild.

Services were 4 p.m. Friday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Joshua Dupree and Pastor Ricky Simmons assisting.

Burial followed in the Bradford Cemetery.

Charles L. Addison
Charles Levi Addison, 89, widower of Brenda Hobbs Addison, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Rice Home in Columbia.

Born in Castlewood, Va., he was the son of the late Everett Brown Addison and Artie Frances Johnson Addison. Mr. Addison was the owner and operator of Addison Moving and Storage Co. He was a retired World War II Veteran, served in Normandy and was also a Korean War Veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Berry Lee Addison of St. Charles and Michael Kelly Addison of Prosperity; two daughters, Linda DuPre of Irmo and Carol Callahan of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Kelly Addison of Virginia; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery with full military honors.

Doris B. Belser
Doris Bateman Belser, 75, widow of Thomas Harvey Belser, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 17, 1926, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Roy Henry Bateman and the late Williene Mathis Bateman Elliott. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, where she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Belser was a retired teacher, and a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer for 30 years. She was honored by the church with Doris Belser Day.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Harvey Belser Jr. and Roy Edwin Belser of Summerton; a sister, Nancy Lynn “Lindy” Brunson of Summerton; and four grandchildren.

Services were 10 a.m. Monday at Summerton Baptist Church with the Revs. Thomas Mellette and Rob Pierce officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church.

Frances B. Broadway
Frances B. “Fannie Bell” Broadway, 88, widow of James W. Broadway, died Friday, August 3, 2001, at National Healthcare.

Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Marion T. and Mary Elizabeth C. Thames. She was a lifelong member of Manning First Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 51 years.

Survivors include a son, J.W. “Billy” Broadway Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, Mary Beatrice Noll of San Antonio, Texas ; a brother, Norwood E. Thames of San Antonio; a sister, Helen T. Jordan of Sumter; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were 3 p.m. Monday at Manning First Baptist Church with Drs. Paul Sullivan and David Anderson officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Manning First Baptist Church Friendship House or Tri-County Hospice.

Robert E. Ford
Robert Earnest “Bob” Ford, 73, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home.

Born in Lima, Ohio, he was the son of the late Carlton A. and Rosella E. Nebergall Ford. He was an architectural draftsman, WWII Navy Veteran, Shriner, 32nd degree mason and a Methodist.

Survivors include a son, Gary Ford and his wife Alexandra of Urbana, Ohio; one special companion, Sylvia Anne Derrick of Columbia; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Ford.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital or Omar Temple Children’s Fund.

Deloris Richburg
Deloris Richburg, 63, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 27, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Julia Vaughn Richburg and the late Horace Richburg. She attended Sumter County public schools and Morris College. In her youth, she joined St. Matthew AME Church, where she served as a trustee for many years until her health failed. She retired from Campbell Soup Co. in 1982.

Survivors besides her mother include a brother, Abraham Oliver of New York; and a sister, Horitiense O. Dubose of New Jersey.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew AME Church with the Rev. Silas Spann, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Wilbert Witherspoon and Minister Sheila Murray assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Louise W. White
Louise Walker White, 76, widow of Isaac Levan White, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at her home.

Born in Great Falls, she was the daughter of the late Lucius E. and Nannie B. Medlin Walker. She was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu and also attended Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors include a son, Allen Levan White of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Miriam Carnell of Florence; two brothers, Wallace E. Walker of Wagner and Jack O. Walker of Lexington; two sisters, Dorothy Gray of White Rock and Betty Felder of Columbia; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Baughman.

Services were 4 p.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Helvey officiating and the Rev. Bennie Turner assisting.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Alberta J. Williams
Alberta Jenkins Williams, 62, wife of George Williams Jr., died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at her daughter’s home.

Born June 16, 1939, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of Elsie Hemingway Jenkins and the late Rufus Demo Jenkins Sr. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. In her youth, she joined St. Mary’s Holiness Church and later became a member of The Holiness Church of Donnely. After moving to Hemingway, she joined St. Phillips Baptist Church, where she served for 25 years.

Survivors besides her husband and mother include four sons, George Williams of New Haven, Conn., Johnny Williams of Hemingway, Joe L. Butler of Sacramento, Calif., and Anthony W. Butler of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; a daughter, Judy Conyers of Manning; four brothers, Levi Jenkins, Leroy Jenkins and Don Jenkins of Hemingway and Rufus Jenkins Jr. of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Jessie Mae Jenkins, Elizabeth Ann Jenkins and Ruthina Jenkins of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Phillip Baptist Church in the Brunson Crossroad community of Hemingway with the Rev. Jobie Lance officiating and the Revs. Robert Lane, S.L. Generette, J.H. Frederick, Levi Jenkins, E.B. Holmes, S. Graham and H. Masengil assisting.

Burial followed in Bethlehem AME Church Cemetery.

Albert Boatwright
Albert Boatwright, 56, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at Windsor Manor Inc.

Born Dec. 18, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Janie Boatwright and the late Lawrence Boatwright. He attended Clarendon County public schools, was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was a farmer.

Survivors besides his mother include three brothers, Elijah Boatwright of Sumter, Robert Boatwright of Jacksonville, Fla., and Timothy Wilson of Hollywood, Fla.; and six sisters, Lottie Mae Boatwright of New York, N.Y., Ilona James of Sumter, Juanita Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., and Mercelene Boatwright, Julia Abraham and Johnnie Mae Davis of Philadelphia.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Daniels, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Ace Boatwright assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
