Dr. Charles W. Williams
COLUMBIA – Archbishop Dr. Charles W. Williams, husband of Lady Eartha York Williams, died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Williams was archbishop for the Transatlantic and Pacific Alliance of Churches and pastor and founder of Temple of Divine Guidance Ministries of Columbia.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Jake and Ophelia McKnight Williams. He attended Manning schools, graduating from Manning Training School. He received his Bachelor of Theology from Conwell School of Theology and Black Ministries, a Master of Arts degree from Columbia Bible Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy from Tabernacle College and Seminary. He pastored Mt. Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church in Manning, Open Fountain in Pasadena, Calif., Gethsemane in Philadelphia, Pa., St. John in Brooklyn, N.Y., and many others. He was in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Pastor Charles Wesley Williams Jr. and Deacon Leland Williams of Columbia; two daughters, Bishop Elect Deborah W. Belton and Pastor Sophia Williams of Columbia; a brother, Cecil Leroy Williams of California; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at Divine Guidance Ministries Educational Center with Bishop Lonnie Langston officiating and Bishops Allen H. Simmons, Paul Hackman, William Young Jr., and others assisting. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbia.

Eva D. Obyle
Eva Dell Jeffcoat Obyle, 79, widow of Paul Jacob Obyle, died Friday, December 21, 2001, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Feb. 22, 1922, in North, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Festus and Elzady Aultman Jeffcoat. She was a retired seamstress and was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Wolfe of Lebanon, Pa., Pauline Drane of Wagener, S.C., Roxanne Truesdale of New Zion and Maxine Salley of Manning; a sister, Carrie Belle Hair of Salley, S.C.; a brother, Allan Jeffcoat of Wagener; 10 grandchildren; and 132 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Thursday in Florence National Cemetery.

Tony Langley
Tony Langley, 45, husband of Terri Ridgeway Langley, died Sunday, December 23, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 7, 1956, he was the son of Paul Heyward “Pete” Langley and the late Edith Louise Williams Langley. He was maintenance supervisor at Clarendon Hall in Summerton and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton are his father and stepmother, Portia Langley of Summerton; a son, Justin Langley of Summerton; a daughter, Amber Langley of Summerton; three sisters, Maria L. Hutson of Manning, Chris Junious of Summerton and Brenda Langley of Orangeburg.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Randy Langley.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Rob Pierce and Mac Hemingway officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Baptist Church Cemetery.

C. Vernon Hickman
C. Vernon Hickman, 93, husband of Myrtis Ashe Hickman, died Monday, December 24, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare East.

Born in Salley, he was the son of the late John Vernon and Allie Furtick Hickman. He was a retired farmer and merchant and was a member of Andrews Chapel UMC.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include his stepmother, Gladys Hickman of Salley; a daughter, Bonnie Butler of Doraville, Ga.; two sons, Bobby Hickman of Manning and Chris Hickman of Hampton, Va.; two sisters, Elma Phillips of Walterboro and Theresa Corley of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Alvin Hickman.

Larry T. Gibbons
Larry Thomas Gibbons, 50, died Thursday, December 27, 2001, at a Columbia hospital after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Thomas Hazel Gibbons and Annie Bell Gowdy Gibbons. He was employed by Hughes Landscaping Co.

Survivors include a brother, W. Glenn Gibbons of New Zion; a sister, Charlotte Tisdale of Turbeville; two nephews, William G. Gibbons Jr. and Ronald A. Tisdale; a niece, Denise Todd; a great-nephew, William T. Gibbons; an uncle, John D. Gowdy; two aunts, Vauda G. Osborne and Gracie G. Osborne; and a special friend, Angela Easler.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Free Will Baptist Church Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Robert Epps
Robert Epps, 61, husband of Alberta G. Epps, died Monday, December 24, 2001, at his home.

Born Aug. 4, 1940, in Sumter County, he was the son of Emma Jane Robinson Epps and the late Paul Epps Sr. He attended Sumter County public schools.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include two sons, Wardell Epps and Alfonzia Epps of Sumter; two stepsons, Ernest Gamble of Turbeville and Michael Fullwood of Lynchburg; a daughter, Roberta Epps of Lamar; a brother, Paul Epps Jr. of Lynchburg; a foster brother, Levern Epps of Bishopville; a sister, Annie Mae Epps-Isaac of Lynchburg; a step-sister, Isabell McKnight of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons; and a sister, Jannie M. Epps-Fulton.

Services were noon Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. James R. Cannion, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Goodman Cemetery.

Lois A. Warren-Daniels
Lois Anne Warren-Daniels, 58, wife of John Covert Daniels Jr., died Thursday, December 20, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Nov. 17, 1943, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Lee Warren Sr. and Elizabeth Evans Warren. She was a retired paralegal and schoolteacher; a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, charter member and past historian of United Daughters of the Confederacy Clarendon Chapter 1770, and past president of Clarendon County Historical Society, past editor of Historical Society Newsletter, “History Notes,” and was Master Gardner of the Year for Clarendon County in 1997.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include a son, Matthew J. Wongrey Jr. and his wife, Kitty, of Sumter; a daughter, Suzanne Holladay and her husband, Johnny, of Alcolu; three brothers, Harvey Lee Warren Jr. and his wife, Linda, Daniel B. Warren Sr. and his wife, Dianne, and Stephen Warren of Summerton; two sisters, Betty E. Pritchard and her husband, R.F., of Sumter and Nelle E. Tomilson and her husband, Harry, of Alcolu; three granddaughters; a grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Wongrey.

Services were 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Summerton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Phelps and Carolyn R. Malphrus officiating. Nephews and cousins served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church.

Adolphus R. Coker
Adolphus Ravenel “Jab” Coker, 71, died Saturday, December 22, 2001, at his home after an illness.
Born in Florence County, he was the son of the late Danny R. and Ethel Driggers Coker. He was a farmer, a tour bus driver and was formerly employed by Lake City Ford. He was a member of Pine Dale Pentacostal Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Graham Coker; a daughter, Annelle Coker Osborne of Florence; two sons, Talbert Kent Coker of Florence and Adolphus “Al” Coker Jr. of Turbeville; two sisters, Virginia Moore of Lake City and Betty Lou Atkinson of New Zion; three brothers, D.D. “Lucky” Coker of Lake City, W.L. “Mutt” Coker of Alcolu and H.D. “Pompy” Coker of Turbeville; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Brunette Coker and Joan Lee Coker; and a brother, Cleo Coker.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Dale Pentacostal Holiness Church. Burial followed in Turbeville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Norman A. Felder
Norman A. Felder Sr., 82, died Saturday, October 13, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Calhoun County, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Mary Alice Waltz Felder.

He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and American Legion Post No. 15. He was a World War II Army veteran and was retired from Sumter Machinery after 40 years of service.

He was first married to the late Lillie Welch Felder for 54 years and then to Esther Corbett Felder.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Norman A. Felder Jr., Lynn Howard Felder and Steven Ashley Felder of Sumter and Joe Carroll Felder of Luthersville, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Iris Bryant of Lake City, Martha McAllister of Summerville and Margarite Harris of Paxville; 10 grandchildren, Art Felder III, Amy Wilkie, Lisa Vining, Suzanne Rickard, Stephanie Felder, Steven Felder and Justin Felder; five stepgrandchildren, Ian McCallister, Patrick McAllister, Scott McCallister, Erin Harris and Stacy Matthews; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Janie Mae W. Conyers
Janie Mae Witherspoon Conyers, 73, wife of James M. Conyers Sr., died Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1928, in the Sugar Hill community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Weston and Etta Ragin Witherspoon. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, attended Allen University in Columbia and received an Associates degree from South Carolina State University. She was a teacher with Wateree Community Actions Inc.

Survivors besides her husband include three sons, James Conyers Jr. and Earl Conyers of Lithonia, Ga., and Alonza Witherspoon of Manning; four daughters, Marietta Moore, Janice Twine, Marcella

Mallett and Marcia Hilton of Manning; two sisters, Curlene Davis and Celestine Walker of Manning; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Margurite McFadden and Bernice Samuel; and six brothers, Maceo, Richard, Learnest, Roscoe, Sylvester and Weston Witherspoon Jr.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday at Providence AME Church with the Revs. Rufus Gaymon, Cokley Richburg and Johnny Kinlaw officiating and Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mary D. White
Mary Daniel White, 88, widow of Edward White, died Thursday, January 3, 2002, at her home.

Born Sept. 5, 1913, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Mose Daniel and Elizabeth Montgomery. She attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she joined Mulberry Baptist Church, where she served on the missionary society, the senior citizen ministry and was a member of the Sunday school.

Survivors include six sons, Willis White, Lee White and James White of Sumter and Johnnie White, Edmond White and Mozel White of New Haven, Conn.; four daughters, Earline Bradley, Flossie York and Ethel Leaf of Sumter and Peggy White of New Haven; 46 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott officiating, and the Rev. Sammie Simmons and Minister Melvin Chaney assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
