Smith Wallace
Smith Wallace, 91, widower of Robertha Hilton Wallace, died Monday, January 7, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1910, he was the son of the late Wilson and Ella Wallace. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was a farmer and worked in the construction industry.

Survivors include four sons, Spencer Wallace and R.W. Wallace of Troy, N.Y., Joe Louis Wallace of Manning and John Wallace of St. Stephen; four daughters, Rochell Felder of Troy, and Ethel Dingle, Annie Bell Ross and Mary Ellen York of Manning; a sister, Annie Harrison of Sumter; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Jonathan Mouzon, Curtis Cantey, O’Donald Dingle, and Evangelists Eloise Pompey and Effie Hilton officiating. Burial followed in Society Hill AME Church cemetery.

Naomi T. Shaleuhy
Naomi Theresa Shaleuhy, 85, died Saturday, January 5, 2002, at Mercy Care Center in Omaha, Neb.

Born Aug. 21, 1916, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sadie Joseph Shaleuhy. She was a retired waitress and was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include nieces.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Summerton, S.C., 29148.

Charles F. Hill Jr.
Charles Frederick Hill Jr., 91, husband of Catherine Anderson Hill, died Thursday, January 10, 2002, at his home.

Born May 23, 1910, in Delair, N.J., he was the son of the late Charles Frederick Hill Sr. and Helene Nugent Hill. He was the owner and operator of Hill Brothers’ Trucking in Merchantville, N.J., an Amateur Trap Shooting Champion and a Mason. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include a daughter, Kimberly Jones of Clementon, N.J.; a nephew; and a niece.

A private family service was held in New Jersey.

Lonnie Burgess
Lonnie Burgess, 75, husband of Lease Witherspoon Burgess, died Wednesday, January 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 19, 1926, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Avie Burgess. He attended Sumter County public schools.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Eddie Burgess of Wedgefield and Johnny Thomas Burgess and Joe Louis Burgess of Olanta; four daughters, Avary Mae McCloud, Gail Jackson and Janie Jackson of Sumter and Druscilla Robinson of Olanta; three brothers, Thomas Burgess of Turbeville, James Thomas Burgess of Olanta and Romey Burgess of Sumter; seven sisters, Shirley King, Lillie Vaughn and Odell McDowell of New York, N.Y., and Ruby Mae Pearson, Shelby Carter, Emma Prince and Maria Martin of Sumter; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were noon Wednesday at Hertiage Chapel Church with the Rev. Dr. H.B. Shaw officiating. Burial followed in Haynesworth Cemetery.

Charles E. Williams
Charles Edward “Binnie” Williams, 53, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Doctor’s Hospital.

Born Nov. 12, 1948, in Sumter County, he was the son of Pearl Davis Lewis and John P. Lewis Sr. and the grandson of the late Lou Purdy and Hezekiah Davis. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and was married to the former Ida Mae Brown.

Survivors besides his parents include a daughter, Selena Williams of Sumter; three brothers, Frank Davis of Forth Worth, Texas , John P. Lewis Jr. of Sumter and Marvin A. Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Brenda Jean Tanner of Alcolu, Sammie Loretta Washington , Corlis A. Lewis and Stacie A. Stevenson of Sumter, Mary Jane Finch of Fayetetville, N.C., and Tamala J. Robinson of Spartanburg; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Cathedral Church in Sumter with Apostle Sammy C. Smith officiating and the Revs. Johnny Yeadon and Larry C. Weston assisting.

Burial followed in Walker Cemetery.

Donald L. Kennedy Sr.
SANTEE -- Donald L. “Don” Kennedy Sr., 63, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, in Santee.

Born July 9, 1938, in Wareagle, W.Va., he was the son of the late Keenan and Violet Compton Kennedy. He was a self-employed salesman, a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a son, Donald L. Kennedy Jr. of Santee; a daughter, Angela Mullins of Santee; a number of brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Keenan Edward Kennedy.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home.

Freddie Hilton
Freddie Hilton, 83, widower of Laurie Williams Hilton, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born April 3, 1918, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Eddie Asbury Hilton and Lillian Walker Hilton. In his youth, he joined Society AME Church and later joined Union Cypress AME Church, where he served faithfully until his health failed. He was a retired farmer and a former employee of Dr. W.R. King Fertilizer Co. of Manning.

Survivors include a son, Reared Robert Daes of Manning; a sister, Rosa Lee Britt and her husband, Charles Henry Britt, of St. George; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.

Services were noon Saturday at Union Cypress AME Church with the Rev. Melissa Green officiating.

Burial followed in Junky Yard Cemetery.

Baby Boy Davion T. Frierson & Baby Boy Devion T. Frierson
Davion Tirell Frierson and Devion Terrell Frierson, newborn twins of Hamilton Gerald Frierson Jr. and Angela L. “Binkie” David, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Survivors besides their parents include grandparents, Jeremiah and Lelia Mae David of Summerton, Esther Carter of Summerton and Hamilton Frierson Sr. of New York, N.Y.; and a brother, Xavier David of Summerton.

Services were noon Monday at Summerton Funeral Service Cemetery with Minister Naomi Georgia officiating.

Mildred R. Dennis
Mildred Ann Ross Dennis, 67, wife of Theron E. Dennis, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 16, 1934, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Abram Briggs Ross and Bertha Ward Ross. She was an administrative assistant at Prothro Chevrolet-Olds in Manning and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a brother, Jake Ross of Manning; a niece; a nephew; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; and a stepson, Theron E. “Ted” Dennis Jr. of Sumter.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Bridges officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Jaheim A. McFadden
Jaheim Ali McFadden, 10 months, died Monday, January 21, 2002, in Manning.

Born March 9, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, he was the son of J.W. McFadden and Rhonda T. Hampton.

Survivors besides his father of Olanta and his mother of the home include his maternal grandparents, Manie F. Burgess of Turbeville and William McFadden of Brooklyn, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, Katherine and J.W. McDowell of Olanta; his maternal great-grandmother, Pernell B. Wilson; his paternal great-grandparents Luther McDowell and Eliza McFadden of Turbeville; and two sisters, Sheenia L. Wilson and Shquaya S. Hampton of the home.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Howard M. McClam Sr.
KINGSTREE - Howard Milton McClam Sr., 73, husband of Katherine Hicklin Jackson McClam, died Monday, January 21, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Solomon Fant McClam and Ada Floyd McClam. He was a graduate of Hebron High School and attended First Baptist Church of Manning. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired insurance agent.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include four sons, Milton McClam, Gary McClam, Warren McClam and Walter McClam of Kingstree; a stepdaughter, Katherine C. Jackson of Manning; two stepsons, Ransome A. Coleman of Spartanburg and Charles L. Coleman of St. Matthews; two sisters, Delma McClam and Helen McClam of Kingstree; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and four step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Daisy Barrineau McClam; a brother, Louie McClam; and a sister, Nell McKenzie.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Williamsburg Funeral Home. Burial followed in Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Fred M. Johnson Jr.
Fred Murray Johnson Jr., 54, husband of Deborah Reeser Johnson, died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Fred M. Johnson Sr. and Elizabeth Jones Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a farmer and land developer associated with Historic Hills of Stateburg Inc. He graduate from Clemson University and was a Mason.

Survivors besides his wife of Dalzell include his stepmother, Millie Johnson Guyette; a daughter, Tiffany Johnson Farnsworth of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Michelle Arrington of Dalzell; a stepson, David Darrell Arrington of Charleston; a sister, Linda J. Evitt of Creedmoor, N.C.; two stepbrothers, Larry Pace and Bob Pace; and a stepsister, Lois Schmidt.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Matthew Gipson
Matthew “Matt” Gipson, 47, died Friday, January 18, 2002, at Dorch Community Care Center.

Born June 23, 1954, in the Davis Crossroads community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Letha Gipson and the adopted son of the late Chamberlain and Annie Lee Gipson. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, became a member of Spring Hill AME Church. He later joined Briggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the male chorus. He was employed by Goat Island Restaurant, Billy Davis Farm and Creek Nursery. He was also a handyman.

Survivors include four brothers, Benjamin Gipson of Newark, N.J., Leroy Gipson of Miami, Fla., Ivory Gipson of Fayetteville, N.C. and James Gipson of Summerton; three sisters, Rachel Mae Oliver of Lodi, N.J., Ernestine Lawson of Miami and Mary Gipson of Manhattan, N.Y.; two stepbrothers, Ludie Gipson of Highland, Fla., and Steven Gipson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two stepsisters, Lillie Mae Frazier of Philadelphia, Pa., and Hattie Mae Wells of Summerton.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Bobby McDonald officiating and the Revs. Phillip Mixon and Richard Johnson assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
