Mary B. Fraser
Mary Billups Fraser, widow of Will F. Fraser Sr., died Friday, January 18, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sardis, she was the daughter of the late Robert Piercy Billups and Maggie Langston Billups.
She was a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church for 56 years and was a retired cafeteria manager for Sumter School District 17.

Survivors include four sons, William Washington Fraser Jr., Howard Lawrence Fraser Sr. and Hugh McCutchen Fraser of Sumter and Thomas Montgomery Fraser of Hartsville; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Fraser of Jacksonville, N.C., and Martha Ann Pat Singleton Spencer of Sumter; two sisters, Meneola Billups Parker of Hartsville and Fannie Mae Billups Wilson of Manning; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Billups of Darlington and Helen Billups of Manning; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sadie Elmore.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Billups; and three brothers, Andrew Billups, Richard Billups and Matthew Billups.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Hebron Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Bob Chastain and Larry Fraser officiating.

Burial followed in Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church or to Hebron Cemetery Fund, 30 Baker Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Charlie R. Disher
Charlie Randolph Disher, 79, husband of Linda Holladay Disher, died Friday, January 18, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Calhoun C. and Maggie Osborne Disher. He was retired from C.P. Chemicals and Booth Boyle Tractor and was a member of Little White Church in Greeleyville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Charlie Randolph “Randy” Disher Jr. and William Louis Disher of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Gayle Nobles of Sumter; two sisters, Louise Browder of Greeleyville and Ruby McCracken of Kingstree; a brother, Billy Disher of Manning; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Walter Disher, Lewis Disher, Thomas Julius Disher, Coley Disher and Donald Disher; and a sister, Mellie McKnight.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Patrick officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Graham Baptist Church in Sumter.

Haskell Bradley Sr.
Haskell Bradley Sr., 69, husband of Martha Bradley, died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1932, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late James Bradley Sr. and Mary Ellen Fullard Bradley. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Senior Citizens’ ministry. He was a retired furniture maker with Georgia Pacific Corp.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Haskell Bradley Jr., Roderick Bradley, Dontrell Bradley and Antonio Bradley of Sumter; a daughter, Deloris Bradley of Patterson, N.J.; a brother, James Bradley of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Jennings and Velia Mae Ladson of Sumter; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Roosevelt Bradley.

Services were 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lillie W. Wilder
Lillie Ree Wilson Wilder, 87, died Friday, January 11, 2002, in Washington , D.C.

Born March 24, 1914, in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Davie and Lula Wilson.

Survivors include a sister, Winnie Lue Brand of Turbeville; and two sisters-in-law, Punzell Wilson of Turbeville and Lillie Mae Wilson of Washington , D.C.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Hill Baptist Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Shelly Hickson officiating.

Burial followed in Union Hill Cemetery.

Edith W. Starks
Edith Witherspoon Starks, 67, wife of John “Johnny” Starks Sr., died Friday, January 11, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 26, 1934, in the Live Oak section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Martha Brown Witherspoon. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Mount Zero Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include five stepsons, Johnny Starks Jr. and Joe Louis Starks of Sacramento, Calif., Welvin Starks of Alcolu, James E. Starks of Baltimore, Md., and Anthony Starks of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Dora Witherspoon of Norwalk, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Janette Burgess of Alcolu; a brother, Nord Witherspoon of Manning; and four sisters, Martha L. Witherspoon and Emma Lee Witherspoon of Manning, Bernice Robinson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Martha A. Witherspoon-Nails of Norwalk.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Witherspoon; a sister, Evelyn W. Smiling; and two brothers, Ronnie and Willie Marion Witherspoon.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zero Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Gladys W. Robinson
Gladys Way Robinson, 78, widow of Correll Nelson Robinson, died Sunday, January 13, 2002, at Twilight Manor in Cayce.

Born March 13, 1923, in Holly Hill, she was the daughter of the late Reuben Hampton Way and Frances Lurline Kemmerlin Way. She was retired from Summerton Uniform and was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Correll Duey Robinson and his wife, Sandra, and Darrell Huey Robinson and his wife, Arlene, of Columbia; two brothers, James Way and R.H. Way of Summerton; three sisters, Marie Stephens of Summerville, Lillian Bacot of Summerton and Jeanette Carn of Rosenville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Way; and a sister, Blanche May.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiating. Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery, P.O. Box 206, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Rev. D. DeLeon Felder Sr.
The Rev. D. DeLeon Felder Sr., 87, husband of Lorraine Perry Felder, died Thursday, January 10, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 12, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ellis and Sallie T. Gibson Felder. He attended Sumter and Clarendon County public schools. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Allen University in Columbia. He completed graduate work at Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Ga., and received a Master’s degree in Religious Education from Howard University in Washington , D.C. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from Allen University in 1959. Further studies were completed at The Chaplain School in Fort Slocum, N.Y., Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., Hampton University in Hampton, Va., and East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.

Rev. Felder taught at Clinton College in Rock Hill prior to entering the military. He served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After 10 years of active duty, he continued to serve as an Army Reserve officer, attaining the rank of Major.

After his years of military service, he taught at Dennis High School in Bishopville, Lincoln High School in Sumter and Thomas Hunter High School in Matthews, Va., where he served as a member of the National Teachers Corps. He was an active participant in the civil rights movement during the ‘60s. Prior to affiliating with the United Methodist Church, he was a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In this capacity, he pastored the following churches in South Carolina: Bethel AME in St. Matthews, Bethel AME in Wedgefield, Pleasant Springs in Irmo, Union Station in Lake View and St. Peter in Cameron. After moving to Virginia, he became a United Methodist Minister and pastored the following churches: St. James in Hampton, Calloway in Arlington, Randolph Street in Lexington, The Leesburg Circuit, John Mann in Winchester, Norfolk United Methodist in Norfolk and Augusta Street in Staunton. He retired from the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church on June 1, 1984. He returned to the Sumter community and joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he served as an associate pastor.

Survivors besides his wife of 51 years include three sons, Daniel DeLeon Felder Jr. and his wife, Monica, of Ft. Washington , Md., Jason J. Felder and his wife, Teddie, of Mitchellville, Md. and Joseph C. Felder and his wife, Angela, of Ft. Washington ; three daughters, Ensign Leona F. Moten of Alexandria, Va., Dr. Loretta Felder of Columbia and Danielle Edwards and her husband, Sheldon, of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandson, Keith Werts Jr. of Charlotte; a granddaughter raised in the home, Lisa Bostick of Laurel, Md.; and five additional granddaughters, Lauren, Lindsey, Alexis and Erica Felder of Ft. Washington , and Perri Felder of Mitchellville; a special nephew, Everett T. Felder of East Orange, N.J.; a special cousin, Mary Cooper of Washington , D.C; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by 16 siblings, Delia Richardson, Rebecca Gordon, Issac, George, Clifton, Ferdinand, Pinckney, Joseph “July,” Ed, Mack, Mae, Mariah, Joe “Shugg,” Jake and two infant sisters.

Services were 1 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Adams Best, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. E.H. McDowell Jr., eulogist, Mack C. McClam, Friendly Gadson, James Blassingame, John C. Barr and Chaplain Willie Dicks Jr. assisting. Burial followed in Walker Cemetery.

Oliver Leon Cooper
Oliver Leon Cooper, 51, husband of Mary Ellen Henry Cooper, died Friday, January 18, 2002, at WJBD VA Medical Center.

Born March 30, 1950, in Manning, he was the son of Hattie McCants Cooper and the late John Fleet Cooper. He attended Manning Training School and did further studies at Central Carolina Technical College. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1969-1972 before being honorably discharged. He was employed by Top Flight Sales and Co. and Superior Corp. as a welder and sawyer for 30 years.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include a son, Xenophon Cooper of Charlotte, N.C.; five brothers, Willie McCants of Alcolu, Otis Cooper of Washington , D.C., Douglas Cooper of Bronx, N.Y., Thomas Cooper of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Robert Daes of Manning; and two sisters, Johnnie Mae Benbow of Manning and Mary Lee of Bronx, N.Y.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Melina Presbyterian Church in Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Clyde Kathleen Morris

Clyde Kathleen “Kitty” Coachman Morris, 76, died Friday, September 7, 2001, in Trenton, Fla.

Born Aug. 5, 1928, in St. Stephen, she was the daughter of the late William Harllee Coachman and the late Bessie Beatrice Crawford Coachman. She was first married to the late Marvin Morris. She was a retired LPN at Clarendon Memorial Hospital and formerly worked with Dr. Robert Ridgeway. She was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton.

Survivors include a brother, Charlie Joe Davis of Cayce; a sister, Helen C. Shipley of Trenton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton.

Burial followed in Lake City Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Shipley, Victor Shipley Jr., Dave Morris, Joe Davis, Billy Coachman, and Joe DuRant.

Erma F. James
Erma Floyd James, 77, widow of Charles W. James, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, at National Healthcare.

Born May 6, 1924, in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Fannie Floyd. She was a retired secretary and a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a son, Charles W. James Jr. and his wife, Susan; a daughter, Janice Ann Moulton and her husband Fred; a sister, Aurelia Carmon of Scranton; and two grandchildren, Missy and Eric Moulton.

Services were 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon K. Reed officiating.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.
