Roy Grooms

LAMAR — Roy C. Grooms, 85, died December 4, 2004 at his residence after an illness. He was born in Sumter, S.C., a son of the late William Frank and Eunia Fields Grooms. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Europe Theater. He retired from law enforcement after serving as policeman for the Town of Timmonsville and Magistrate’s Constable, and for a number of years was caretaker at the First Baptist Church of Lamar.

He was one of the charter members of the Timmonsville Rescue Squad. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 94 and a member of the VFW. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lamar and Lamar Masonic Lodge No. 287. His wife was the late Estelle R. Hewett Grooms and she died April 13, 2004.

Surviving are: three sons, Rodney Hewett and Samuel J. Hewett, of Lamar, and Glenn B. (Myra) Hewett, Wilmington, N.C.; a daughter, Linda (Richard) Hill, Weaverville, N.C.; two sisters, Martha G. Moody, Timmonsville and Vivian G. Searcy, Marion, N.C.; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife and parents; a daughter, Judy Hewett Ozuna and also, brothers and sisters, Gladys Dority, Frank Grooms, Ervin Grooms, Edna Glarum, Cecil Grooms, Sr., Anna Ruth Grooms, Joe Grooms, Sr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at 2 o’clock at the First Baptist Church of Lamar. Interment will be in Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Dec. 6, 2004 from 6-8 p.m.

Col. Karl Haendle

MURRELLS INLET — Colonel Karl Victor Haendle, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Wachesaw Plantation died Friday, December 3, 2004.

He was Born on April 13, 1930 in Syracuse, NY. Preceding Vic in death were his parents, Karl and Aldah Day Haendle and one brother, Martin Day Haendle.

Vic was a 1954 graduate of The Citadel and was commissioned 2nd Lt. (Artillery) that year. He completed graduate level courses from University of Utah, and during his Army Career he attended several military schools and courses, including basic and advanced artillery school, airborne training, and The Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. His active duty assignments included many stateside and overseas postings including Germany, Korea, and a NATO assignment in the Netherlands. Additionally he served in combat assignments in the Dominican Republic and in Vietnam. In Vietnam he was Commander of the U.S. Army Special Security Group during the Tet offensive. In Korea he served as a Liaison Officer to the Republic of Korea Intelligence Agency, and Commander, Taegu Field Office. His later assignments included command of the Southeast Region of the Defense Intelligence Service in Atlanta, and Senior Army staff duties at the Pentagon. His last active duty assignment was as Assistant Deputy Director for Counterintelligence and Security at the Defense Intelligence Agency. Vic’s personal decorations include: The Defense Superior Service Medal; The Bronze Star Meritorious Service Medal; The Joint Services Commendation Medal; The Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; and The Presidential Unit Citation.

Upon Vic’s Military retirement, he was Security Manager for Federal Systems Group for Lockheed Corporation (formerly Sanders Associates) in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Colonel Haendle is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Wainner Haendle and a son, Steven Haendle of Socastee; a daughter, Karen Haendle Coe of Ft. Worth, Texas ; three grandchildren, Brandi, Christine and Elise Haendle. He also has several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 9, 2004. Burial will follow later with Military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Vic was an active member of Wachesaw Plantation and Murrels Inlet community affairs and a Georgetown County Election Commissioner until his illness.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577 or Belin United Methodist Church, PO Box 528, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

John Hendley

COLUMBIA — Service for John M. Hendley, 83, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields-Episcopal Church with burial in the church memorial garden. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Hendley died Saturday, December 4, 2004. Born in Charleston, he was the son of the late Coit T. and Lois Denaro Hendley. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a charter member of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal.

In 1940 Mr. Hendley joined the United States Marine Corps. He served for four years, and rose to the rank of Captain during World War Two. He commanded troops in the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific as a reconnaissance officer in the First, Second, and Fifth Marine Divisions. At war’s end, his unit was one of the first to arrive at Nagasaki, following the dropping of the atomic bomb on that city.

Following the war, Mr. Hendley returned to civilian life. An entrepreneur at heart, he engaged in several business ventures. He created a mortgage banking business, built and operated a motel in Myrtle Beach, raised Shorthorn cattle, and operated retail stores specializing in floor coverings for residential applications. In 1960 he founded “John Hendley Carpets” in Columbia and remained involved in this business until his death.

Mr. Hendley was active in professional, service, social and fraternal organizations. He served as Exalted Ruler of Columbia Elk’s Lodge 1190. He was a former member of Forest Lake Club, the Columbia Rotary Club, the Tarantella Club, the S.C. Shorthorn Breeders Association, the South Carolina Horse Show Association, the Marine Corps Association and First Marine Division Association.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Nance Hendley; daughters and sons-in-law; Anne and Bob Kearns of Hartsville, Susan and Jim Key of Greer and Marty and Gary Minkler of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Vi Hendley of Columbia; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Robert Hunt

DOVER, Mass. — A memorial service for Robert Bridger Hunt, MD, formerly from S.C., was 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church. J.S. Waterman & Son’s, Welesley, was in charge. Born in S.C., he died Dec. 2, 2004. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Lane Hunt; son, James Hunt; grandson, Robert Hunt II; siblings, James Jr., Edward, William Hunt, Marie Haynes and Jettie Hunt.

Henry Jones

NORWAY — Services for Henry Webster Jones, 80, will be held Eleven A.M. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston with burial in the Willow Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at Folk Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Mr. Jones husband of the late Ellen Hair Jones died Saturday. Born in Orangeburg County, he was a son of the late Edward Maxwell Jones and Maggie Chavous Jones. Mr. Jones was a retired logger and farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Survivors include daughters, Linda J. Wiles of Blackville, Patricia J. Fanning of Virginia Beach, VA., Deborah Lynn J. Bennett of Orlando, Fla., Pamela J. Hutto of Springfield; son, William H. Jones of Lexington; sisters, Bessie Myers of Williston, Margaret Trotter of Hephzibah, Ga., Edna Williams and Alma Rutland of Norway; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Ida Rutland, brothers, Elvin, Harry and Leonard Jones.

Patricia Morton

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Mary Patricia Purser Morton, of Columbia, died Sunday, December 05, 2004. Born in Cooper’s Town, New York, November 10, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Booth Purser and the late Grace Morrison Purser.

Mrs. Morton is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard Rutledge Morton; her daughter, Susan Christian Morton Sims and son-in-law, Blair Rochelle Sims, of Lexington and her son, Reed Rutledge Morton, of Beaufort, SC; 2 grandchildren, Blair Rutledge Sims and Grace Linda Sims.

The family will receive friends at 7:00 PM, Monday, December 06, 2004 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, 120 Marydale Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 07, 2004, at 11:00 AM, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Anthony Droze. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202 or the charity of one’s choice. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, is assisting the family.

Edna Weathers

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Edna Joye Weathers, 98, the widow of the late John Roland Weathers will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel with burial to follow in Wateree Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Everett Reconnu and Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 6, 2004, from 6:30-8:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel.

Memorials may be made to A. Sam Karesh Long Term Care, c/o Kershaw County Medical Center, 1315 Roberts Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Born in Camden, SC, she was the daughter of Daniel W. and Beulah Horne Joye. Mrs. Weathers was employed by JC Pennys and retired from J.J. Newberry.

She was a member of Kershaw County Council on Aging and a member of Wateree Baptist Church where she was a pianist and Sunday School Teacher.

Surviving are her daughter, Golda “Judy” McDowell and her husband, Ned, of Camden; her son, Claude Weathers and his wife, Avalene, of Camden; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Marie Campbell of West Columbia.

Mrs. Weathers was predeceased by 5 brothers and 1 sister.

Sylvia Rogers

BARNWELL — Sylvia Johnson Slaton Rogers, 71, died Sunday, December 5, 2004 at her residence at Slaton Farm, Barnwell, SC.

She was born in Conway, SC, a daughter of the late George Shafter and Lillian Creel Johnson. She was the wife of Fred A. Rogers III of Charleston, SC and the widow of George R. (Pru) Slaton of Ft. Lauderdale FL. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barnwell, SC and High Point Baptist Church of Conway, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Barnwell with Dr. Steve Burnette officiating and at 3:30 pm at the High Point Baptist Church of Conway with the Rev. Mack Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in the High Point Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Monday evening at the Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bessie Creel Johnson Endowment of the Conway Hospital, P.O. Box 829, Conway, SC.

Survivors include: her husband, Fred A. Rogers III of Barnwell, SC and Charleston, SC; daughters, Joyce B. Cross and Vickie B. Glover-Ray of Barnwell, SC; sister, Hazel Lillian Karpinen of Walterboro, SC; brothers, Clarence Mayo Johnson of Chesapeake, Va., Donald Edwin Johnson of Columbia, SC, and Earl Wayne Johnson of Galivants Ferry, SC; grandchildren, Sylvia Patricia Thomas of Loretta, TN, John Slaton Glover, William Rhett Glover and Amanda Lillian Bryan of Barnwell, SC, Arthur A. (Trey) Glover III of Charleston, SC, Krystal Bryan Williams of Texas , Ashley Bryan Blankenship and Alicia M. Bryan of Beaufort, SC; six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia Patricia Bryan; a son, Harold Ray Bryan Jr. and brothers, George Curtis Johnson and Herbert Waldo Johnson.
