Infant Jaheim D. Wells
Infant Jaheim Dondre Wells died Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born the same day, he was the son of Melvin Jeron Brown and Lula Monique Wells.

Survivors include a maternal grandmother, Emma Lee Wells; paternal grandmother, Naomi Brown of Manning; and a paternal great-grandmother, Sadie McFadden of Turbeville.

Services were 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Goodwin Cemetery in the Shiloh community with the Rev. Samuel Burgess officiating.

Mary D. Bachus
Mary Mable “Mamie” Dietze Bachus, 94, widow of Wynard Edwin Bachus, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Covenant Place.

Born in Qulin, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Emil Dietze and the late Emelia Acherman Dietze. She was reared by her late aunt, Etta M. Bush.

Mrs. Bachus was a member of First Baptist Church and the Bethany Sunday School Class. She was formerly employed as the ready-to-wear buyer for Sumter Dry Goods and formerly owned and operated the Little Hat Shoppe.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Bachus Johnson of Summerton; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Teddy M. Johnson IV.

Services were 3 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Burns officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 107 E. Liberty Street, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

John B. Cooper
John Bernard Cooper, 31, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1970, in New York City, he was the son of Sandra Cooper. He graduated from Bayside High School in New York City and was an interior decorator and landscaper.

Survivors besides his mother include a brother, Michael Tyrone Cooper and his wife Sandra of Sumter; two foster brothers, Oneal Cooper and John Cooper of Gable; and an adopted brother, Celese McCants of Alcolu.

Services were 1 p.m. Tuesday at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA) in Gable with the Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Charles O. Hight
Charles Oliver Hight, 57, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at his home in Summerton.

Born April 14, 1945, in Charlotte, N.C., he was the son of the late Henry Holland Hight and the late Lucille Dean Hight. He was a brakeman for Southern Railroad and was a U.S. Marine Veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Allen Hight and Michael Wayne Hight of Lincolnton, N.C.; a brother, Freddie Hight of Mooresville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Stoney Holland Hight, Cody Allen Hight, Zachary Wayne Hayes and Ashley Hayes.

A memorial service was planned for a later date in North Carolina.

Cora L. Hudson
Cora Leviner Hudson, 75, widow of Robert Marvin Hudson Jr. died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born in Rockingham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Berry Leviner and the late Donnie Leviner. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was retired from Pinewood Manufacturing Co.

Survivors include a son, David Shealy of Sumter; a stepson, Glen Hudson of Manning; four daughters, Josephine Boley and Donna Difford of Sumter, Linda Gregory of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brenda Shealy of Columbia; six brothers, James Leviner and Benny Leviner of Gary, Ind., Jimmy Leviner of Raleigh, N.C., Henry Leviner of Wadesboro, N.C., and Charles Leviner and Harvey Leviner of Hamlett, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy Woolard and Donnie Leviner; and one brother, Neil Leviner.

Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. James Grasty and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Randy Helms, Thomas Mays, Tripp Mays and Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church “Arise and Build” Fund.

Lillian P. Lane
Lillian Pergerson Lane, 80, widow of Roy Henry Lane, died Friday, May 31, 2002, in Providence Hospital.

Born Dec. 7, 1921, in Louisburg, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay Pergerson and the late Ertie Roberson Pergerson. She attended Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Madeline Lane of Manning; three sons, Roy Kenneth Lane of Raleigh, N.C., James Robert Lane of Vero Beach, Fla. and David Julien Lane of Manning; two sisters, Vivian P. Dickerson of Durham, N.C. and Carolyn P. Harmon of Machanicsville, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were 5 p.m. Sunday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Ron Pettit officiating.

Graveside services were 2 p.m. Monday in Raleigh Memorial Park, Raleigh, N.C.

Tryphenia C. Miller
Tryphenia Clark Miller, 62, widow of Ulmont Miller, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 5, 1939, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Erbie Clark and Louise Cooper Clark. She was a graduate of Manning Training High School. She lived in New York for several years and was employed with Burlington Clothing Industry. In 1989 she returned to Manning.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Miller and his wife Charmine of Brooklyn, N.Y., Anthony Miller of Bronx, N.Y., and Cedric Miller of Harlem, N.Y.; three brothers, Howard Clark and his wife Irene of Buffalo, N.Y., Reuben Clark and his wife Gloria of Manning and Pearlie Clark of Manning; three sisters, Doris Williams of Opa Locka, Fla., Mildred Chick of Jersey City, N.J., and Gracie Stukes of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; and a brother, Clifford.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with Brother Lemon and Brother Benbow officiating.

Burial followed in Clark-Gibson Cemetery, Paxville.

Carl R. Post
Ottumwa, Iowa - Carl Richard Post, 63, died May 20, 2002, at his home in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Born April 18, 1939, in Iowa City, he was the son of the late Arthur Milroy Post and the late Bessie Mae McMath Post. He was a concrete and tile worker.

Survivors include a brother, Alvin Arthur Post of Bloomfield, Iowa; and two sisters, Carolyn Harper of Hansell, Iowa, and Judy Allan of Manning.

Memorial services were May 28, 2002, at Alexander Johnson Funeral Home in Iowa.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 67, Vance S.C. 29163.

Johnnie L. Smith
Johnnie Landson Smith “J.L.” Smith Sr., 75, widower of Sallie Lowery Smith, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 26, 1926, in the New Zion area of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William Smith and the late Anna Bell Collins Hammett Smith and a stepson of the late Benjamin Hammett.

He was educated at Lodabar Parochial School and Good Will Parochial School.

He was a member of Friendship Presbyterian Church where he served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, deacon elder, financial church secretary and Presbyterian Men’s Organization. He was a retired farmer and barbecue chef.

Survivors include three sons, Johnnie L. Smith Jr. and wife Betty of New Zion, Alvin D. Smtih and William L. Smith of the home; a grandson he raised, Mark L. Smith of Charlotte; and five daughters, Yvonne S. DeLotach of Baltimore, Janice Smith of the home, Marcia S. Jones, Josephine C. Smith of Charlotte and Jonell McFadden and husband Norrel of New Zion; and one sister, Beatrice C. Cooper of Washington , D.C.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Lee; and a brother, Bennie Hammett.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday at Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA) with the Revs. Stanley W. Jones, I.B. Herbert, Carnell Hampton and Juenarrl Keith officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Shirley D. Conyers
Shirley Ann Dupree Conyers, 41, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 14, 1960, she was the daughter of the late Charles Dupree Sr. and Janie Mae Dennis Dupree.

She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board. She was a former employee of Jerry’s Truck Stop and Western Steer Steakhouse.

Survivors include her companion, Alphonse Hawkins of Manning; four brothers, Charles Dupree Jr., Allen Dupree and William Dupree of Manning and David Dupree of Valencia, Calif.; four sisters, Georgia Conyers and Helen Weeks of Manning, Leola Chatman of Woodbridge, Va., and Shirley Cooper of Gable; and a paternal grandmother, Thelma Dupree of Manning.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George K. Carter, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Charles Smith assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Louise M. Garland
Louise Robinson McFaddin Garland, 86, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at her home.

Born March 3, 1915, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Ada Elizabeth Robinson. She was a retired registered nurse, and a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church. She was first married to Samuel Raymond McFaddin and then to Wilbur H. Garland.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Samuel Raymond McFaddin of Madison, Ga.; a daughter, Sarah Jackson of Sardinia; a brother, Sam Robinson of Lancaster; a sister, Edna Flynn of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Reed officiating.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
