James Robinson
James “Red” Robinson, 51, husband of Janie Mae Robinson, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.

Born June 22, 1950, in Summerton, he was the son of the late James Robinson and Amanda Way Robinson. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of St. John Pentecostal Holiness Church in New York, N.Y., where he served as superintendent of Sunday school under Pastor Margaret Chambliss. He was employed as a driver for AA Ambulance Service in New York, N.Y.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Keith Robinson of New York; two daughters, Jennifer and Lisa Robinson of New York; and three brothers, David Robinson of Camden, N.J., General Lee Robinson of Summerton and Willie Robinson of Manhattan, N.Y.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating and the Rev. James Blanding assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Melvin Witherspoon
Melvin Witherspoon, 43, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Howard University Hospital.

Born Nov. 16, 1957, in Manning, he was the son of the late Willie and Sophia Gibson Witherspoon. He was a member of Wilson Grove Baptist Church. He worked in the construction industry and as a chef for several restaurants in the Washington , D.C., area.

Survivors include a son, Antonio Witherspoon of Washington , D.C.; five brothers, Wilbur Witherspoon of Washington , D.C., Richard Witherspoon and LeRoy Witherspoon of Manning, John E. Witherspoon of Rockford, Ill., and Marvin Witherspoon of Greenville, Tenn.; five sisters, Amelia Holliday of Miami, Fla., Ester Montgomery of Greeleyville, and Almeta Witherspoon, Clara Hilton and Alice Singleton of Manning; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon Whack and John Allen Witherspoon.
Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Wilson Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Eldress Wessie B. Gamble and Minister Wayne Montgomery officiating.Burial followed in St. Matthew Cemetery.

Addie R. Conyers
Addie Richardson Conyers, 96, widow of Paul Conyers, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Hopewell HealthCare Center.

Born Oct. 12, 1904, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late John and Lucinda Richardson. She attended Clarendon County public schools and in her youth, joined Antioch UME Church, where she was a member of the missionary society.

Survivors include a daughter, LueEthel Conyers Drayton of Rimini; two sisters, Sarah R. Canty of Pinewood and Dorothy Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Allen, Richard, George, Rufus, James and John.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Richard McKnight, Dr. S.R. Moitt and R. Boyd assisting.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Mary Tindal Davis
Mary Tindal Davis, 86, widow of Frank C. Davis, died Sunday, August 5, 2001, in Gainesville, Fla.

Born April 25, 1915, in Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late David Leslie Tindal and Lela Norris Tindal.

She lived in Gainesville for 10 years. Mrs. Davis was a graduate of Furman University. For 25 years, she was a homemaker and teacher in the Mobile, Ala., public school system. She attended Central Presbyterian Church of Mobile, where she worked to expand the church library. She was a member of the Great Books Club of Mobile. Davis liked to travel, read and go to the beach. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Francis and Rosemary Davis of Gainesville; Bill and Carla Davis of Pawly’s Island; and Conner and Karen Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and May Tindal of Pinewood; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Amelia Edwards of Sumter; Doris and Jim Cahill of Charlotte, N.C.; and Hennie and Henry Rickenbaker of Summerton; five grandchildren, Tindal Snider, Shepherd Davis, Christian Davis, Frank Davis and Preston Davis; and a great grandson, Davis Snider.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Franklin officiating and Davis’ great nephew, the Rev. Chad Rickenbaker, assisting.

Burial will follow in the church cemetary.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Howard W. Gregory
Howard Woodrow Gregory Sr., 87, widower of Celestine Nelson Gregory, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home.

Born Jan. 27, 1914, in Boydton, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Nanny Lee Newton Gregory. He attended Macklinburg County, Va., public schools. He joined Clinton Memorial AME Church and, after moving to Summerotn, joined Liberty Hill AME Church, where he served on the Senior Steward Board. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and retired from Joe’s Restaurant as co-owner.

Survivors include a son, Howard W. Gregory Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Jones of Newark, N.J.; five grandchildren, Kim, Andre, Gerard, Brandon and Eric Gregory; and a great-grandchild.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. M. Duncan, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Walt Phillips assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dorothy E. McFaddin
Dorothy Elizabeth DuBose McFaddin, 86, widow of Hugh Frank McFaddin, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sardinia, she was the daughter of the late Frank Elsivan and Martha Elizabeth Player DuBose.

She was a graduate of Gable High School and a member of the Sardinia Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted wife and mother. She lived her life as an example of Christ. Her life was one of love and service to others, never once thinking of herself.

Survivors include four sons, Hugh Frank McFaddin Jr., Charles DuBose McFaddin and Henry Allen McFaddin of Sumter and Jack Ellis McFaddin of Manning; a daughter, Jane McFaddin Francis of Columbia; two sisters, Margaret DuBose Marshall of Danville, Ky., and Lois DuBose Graybeal of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine McFaddin Walker; two brothers, Frank Elsivan DuBose Jr. and Allen McConnel DuBose; and three sisters, Lucille DuBose Dobson, Bessie DuBose McFaddin and Leona DuBose Ham.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gordon Reed officiating.

Burial followed in McFaddin Cemetery.

Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Roy M. Wrenn
Roy M. Wrenn, 75, husband of Ila Stewart Wrenn, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 18, 1926, in Washington , D.C., he was the son of the late LeRoy and Lois Oliver Wrenn. He was a member of Santee Baptist Church. He was a retired electrician, and a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning include two sons, Stuart Wrenn of Frederick, Md., and Stephen Wrenn of Warner Robins, Ga.; a daughter, Paula Wrenn of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a brother, Charlie Wrenn of Temple Hills, Md.; two sisters, Dorothy Wrenn and Lucille Wrenn of Fredericksburg, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Paris L. Chockley
Paris Lemard “Sid” Chockley, 66, husband of Linnie B. Welch Chockley, died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at the Dorn VA Medical Center.

Born May 7, 1935, in Camden, Ill., he was the son of the late Marvin and Julia McKinley Chockley. He was a retired truck driver for Suburban Propane Gas Co., a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean and Gulf Wars, was retired from the S.C. National Guard 1052nd Transportation Co., and attended Matthews Tabernacle Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Lake City include five sons, Ricky and Gary Chockley of Lake City, David Chockley of Paxville, Larry Chockley of Manning and Perry Chockley of Marion; three daughters, Julia Goins of Greeleyville, Sarah Timmons of Manning and Sherry Harrell of Lake City; two brothers, Wayne Chockley of Rushville, Ill., and James Chockley of Burlington, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Crone; and a daughter, Mary Lou Chockley.

Services, with full military honors, were 3 p.m. Saturday in Matthews Tabernacle Church in Lake City with the Revs. Charles Readling and Raymond Shaw officiating.

Burial followed in Lake City Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elneater R. Minnis
Elneater Robinson Minnis, 71, widow of Dr. Bobby L. Minnis, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at Alamance Regional Hospital.

Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Effie Mims Robinson and the late Junious Pittman Robinson Sr. She graduated from Manning High School and attended Holmes Bible College. She retired from Lucent Technologies after more than 40 years of employment.

Survivors besides her mother of Sumter include a son, Joseph C. Minnis and his wife, Tammy, of Graham; two brothers, Thomas J. Robinson of Camden and Timothy P. Robinson of Lemoore, Calif.; and five sisters, Grace Hallman, Eddie Alston and Berneas Robbins of Sumter, Sybil Garnett of Charleston and Wanda Rodgers of Rembert.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marian Anita; and two brothers, Norman W. Robinson and J.P. Robinson Jr.

Services were 11 a.m. Thursday at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery in Graham with the Rev. Howard Thompson officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society or Hospice.

Elsie C. Robinson
Elsie “Sug” Canty Robinson, 78, widow of Frank Robinson, died Sunday, August 5, 2001, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law.

Born Jan. 9, 1923, in the Foreston community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Niece Canty and Annie Reid Canty. She attended the Rosenwald School in the Pine Grove community of Clarendon County. In her youth she joined Pine Grove AME Church. After moving to Philadelphia, she joined St. Phillip Baptist Church. She returned to South Carolina in 1989 and joined Union Cypress AME Church, where she served as a class leader, member of the Missionary Society, Steward Board, worship leader of Missionary Society and president of the senior choir.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosemell Kennedy of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; a brother, Hindson Canty of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Millicent Darby of Salters; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James “Doo” Cantey; and six sisters, Lucille Pompey, Leola Canty, Almira Bennett, Vina Perry, Ruth Mouzon and Pontheola King.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Union Cypress AME Church with the Rev. Melissa W. Green, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Manuel Rogle, James Robinson, O’Donald Dingle and Sister Vivian Canty assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
