Pearl McCray Wilson
Pearl McCray Wilson, 62, widow of Arthur Wilson Sr., died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, at her home.

Born July 6, 1939, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Sam McCray and Elizabeth Capers McCray. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, Wilson was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. Later, she became a faithful member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Henry McCray, Arthur Wilson Jr. and Toney Wilson of Sumter and Cornell Anderson of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Deloris Bells of the home and Theresa Sykes of Newport News, Va.; four brothers, Willie Albert McCray of Newport News, and James McCray, John McCray and Joseph McCray of Sumter; five sisters, Lauretha Anderson of Lynchburg, Mary Chandler, Sarah Hollman and Ossie Kidd of Philadelphia, and Katherine Moore of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Roberta Weeks and Beulah Wright; and five brothers, Albert McCray, David McCray, Isiah McCray, James Hugh McCray and Sam McCray Jr.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. T.O. Everett officiating and the Rev. Devon Wright assisting.

Burial followed in Old McFadden Cemetery.

Kenneth Grantham
Kenneth Grantham, 52, died Wednesday, August 15, 2001, at his home after an illness.

Born in Florence County, he was the son of Mrs. Viva Grantham and the late Kenneth W. Grantham Sr. He was a LUTCF, a lifetime member of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, and a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Florence include his wife, Saundra “Sandy” Bokor Grantham of Turbeville; a daughter, Patricia Elizabeth Grantham of Turbeville; a son, Kenneth W. Grantham III of Turbeville; a brother, Terrell W. “Victoria” Grantham of Florence; and his step-father, T.G. Gamble of Florence.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry F. Grantham Sr. and Allie S. Grantham.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Sarah M. Harrell
Sarah Sherrod Moye Harrell, 66, wife of George Manning Harrell, died Friday, August 17, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 21, 1934, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sebia Moye and Marian Huggins Moye. She was co-founder of the Shrimper Restaurants.

Survivors besides her husband of Summerton include two sons, George Harrell of Lexington and Joe Harrell of West Columbia; two daughters, Beth Austin of Columbia and Becky Pintak of Falls Church, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Lucy W. Hayes
Lucy Witherspoon Hayes, 74, widow of James Hayes Sr., died Thursday, August 16, 2001, at Providence Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1926, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Lizzie Witherspoon and Dewey Dukes. She attended Williamsburg County public schools and was a lifelong member of St. John Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Harskin Hayes of Manning, Sam E. Hayes of Columbia, Wendell Hayes of Sumter and Michael Hayes of Atlanta; nine daughters, Janie Allen of Warren, Ark., Julia Hayes of Chicago, Ill., Maxine Bowman of Austin, Texas , Hieteenthia Hayes of Starks, Fla., Christina Bradham of Charleston, Dorothy Conyers of Lithonia, Ga., Lizzie Mae Cunningham, Mamie Hayes and Rosetta Johnson, of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Albert Hayes; and a brother, Sam Witherspoon.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Talbert Dickson, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Greg Cunningham assisting.

Burial followed in St. James Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joseph B. Pack
Joseph Britton “Joe” Pack Jr., husband of Rose Marie Newman Pack, died Sunday, August 19, 2001, at Lexington Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1939, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Joseph Britton Pack Sr. and the late Mary Emily Ingram Pack. He was the owner and operator of Pack’s Landing, a member of the S.C. National Guard, and a member of Pinewood Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Pinewood include three sons, Jody, Stevie, and Andy Pack of Pinewood; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Hannah and Wells Pack.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Pack.

Services were 4 p.m. Wednesday at Pinewood Baptist Church with the Revs. Bennie Barwick and Sim Smith officiating. Burial followed in Paxville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Pinewood Baptist Church.

Dorothy M. Russell
Dorothy McKnight Russell, widow of Charlie H. Russell, died Sunday, August 5, 2001, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born in Lake City, she was the daughter of the late Henry Rushton McKnight and Dorothy Layton Driggers McKnight. She was a homemaker and a member of Rignel Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia R. and her husband, William E. “Bill” Fenters of Manning and Cherri R. Perkins of Georgetown; three grandchildren, W. Charles Fenters of Lexington, W. Bryan Fenters of Florence and Russell J. Perkins of Georgetown; three great-grandchildren, Savannah C. Fenters of Manning, Brandon Scott Fenters of Florence and W. Blake Fenters of Lexington; four sisters, Mary E. Duke and Nell Thames of Manning, Daphine Wynn of Georgetown and Virginia Williamson of Florence; a brother, Muldrow McKnight of New Zion; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday in Graham Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Omar Temple Crippled Children’s Fund.

Bertha B. Chinners
Bertha Barrett Chinners, widow of George Washington Chinners, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at NHC Healthcare.

Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Hattie Cutter Barrett. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Sumter and a former member of First Baptist Church in Moncks Corner. She was a retired bookkeeper for Berkeley Electric Co-Op.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsie Chinners Funchess and her husband, Manley Lindsey Funchess, of Anderson; a brother, Lee C. Barrett and his wife, Mildred, of Sumter; three sisters, Linda Peeples and Mary B. Fleming of Sumter and Sophie Barrett Starling of Columbia; three grandchildren, April Arnold Allen and her husband, Fred. E., of Columbia, John Daniel Arnold and his wife, Rebekah, of Hickory, N.C., and Charles William Arnold and his wife, Stephanie, of Pawley’s Island; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sarah and Chalmers Allen of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Rich Dantzler and Dr. Jim Chandler officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church.

Harriett B. Mitchum
Harriett Virginia Broadway Mitchum, 64, widow of John Eldridge Mitchum, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, in Manning.

Born May 24, 1937, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late James Herbert Broadway and Frances Marion Geddings Broadway. She was a retired supervisor for Summerton Apparel and a member of Trueway Holiness Church in Manning.

Survivors include a companion, Claude David Fowler of Alcolu; three sons, Henry F. Mitchum of Summerton and Don E. Mitchum and John T. Mitchum of Alcolu; two daughters, Jackie M. DuBose and Frances M. Pillsbury of Manning; three brothers, Billy Broadway of High Point, N.C., and Wayne Broadway and Jimmy Broadway of Manning; 27 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Herbert W. Mitchum and Ashley Mitchum; two brothers, Nelson Broadway and Herbert Broadway; and two sisters, Mary Ann B. Braxton and Miriam B. King.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with grandson the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating.

Memorials may be made to Trueway Holiness Church.

Thelma D. Pringle
Thelma Dargan Pringle, 89, widow of Elijah Pringle, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001.

Born Dec. 23, 1911, in the Brogdon community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian Frazier Dargan. She was a graduate of Kinder Presbyterian School in Sumter and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris College. In her youth, she joined Reeseville AME Church and later joined Trinity AME Church in Manning. After retiring, she joined Bethel AME Church, where she served on the Pulpit Committee, Stewardess Board, Missionary Society and as “Mother of the Church.” She was principal of Jordan Elementary School and retired from Manning Primary School after 46 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Miriam Hamilton of the home; a close friend, Leola F. McDuffie of Manning; three grandchildren, Edmond Hamilton Jr. of Columbia, Velise L. Hamilton of Cliffwood, N.J., and Derrick Hamilton of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ivory and Samuel Dargan; and a sister, Mae Dargan.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Jack Lewis Jr., pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Dr. Marion W. Newton, Nate Brock and John Frederick assisting.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Harold Robinson
Harold “Rob Base” Robinson, 47, died Wednesday, August 22, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born May 14, 1954, in the Foreston community of Clarendon County, he was the son of Joella Snider Robinson and the late Joe Lee Robinson Sr. He attended Clarendon County public schools and in his youth, attended Sunday school and worship service at Light Hill Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Roger’s Construction Co. and Robinson Construction Co., both of Manning.

Survivors besides his mother of Greeleyville, include three brothers, Arthur Robinson, Rickie Robinson and Minister Harry Robinson of Foreston; and seven sisters, Nell King of Bronx, N.Y., Estell Pompey of Lancaster, Pa., Vernell Pompey, Bettie Hilton and Jackqulynn Pompey of Foreston, Viree Abraham of Florence and Francenia Woods of Greeleyville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Lee Robinson Jr.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Light Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Dingle, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Junky Yard Cemetery.
