Ethel T. Anderson
Ethel T. Anderson, 88, widow of James Lensen Anderson, died Thursday, December 27, 2001, at Covenant Place.

Born in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Eugene Turbeville Sr. and Ethel Durden Turbeville. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Columbia, where she served as former president of the Women of the Presbytery. She was a 1934 graduate of Winthrop College and a retired elementary teacher from Satchel Ford Elementary School. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Delta Kappa Gamma and was former president of the Columbia Federal Teachers Credit Union.

Survivors include two brothers, Daniel E. Turbeville Jr. of Sumter and Clemence D. Turbeville of Columbia; five sisters, Nell Turbeville, Joanna T. Keels, Sylvia T. Moseley, Majorie T. Thrasher and Celeste T. Rivers of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with her nieces, the Revs. Dr. J. Kay Keels and Diane A. Moseley officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3100 Covenant Road, Columbia, S.C. 29206, or to Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Julia M. Blanton
Julia M. Blanton, 51, died Tuesday, December 25, 2001, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

Born Jan. 2, 1950, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary McRoy.

Survivors include her adopted father, Carl Rabon of Charleston; her former husband, Ken Blanton of Conway; three sons, Kevin Blanton and his wife, Tamara, and Mark Blanton and Tobie Blanton of Myrtle Beach; four brothers, Carl McRoy, Jimmy McRoy, John McRoy and Danny Watson; two sisters, Retta Disher and Dottie Carter; and four grandchildren, Brandon Blanton, Dillon Blanton, Bryson Messer and Keaton Messer of Myrtle Beach.

She was preceded in death by her adopted mother, Vivian Watson Rabon.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Grand Strand Funeral Home and Crematory.

Sarah M. Green
Sarah McConico Green, 79, widow of Abie Green Sr., of Manning, died Wednesday, December 19, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late Mary McConico. She was raised by her grandfather, the late Castola McConico.

Survivors include three sons, George Green of Bronx, N.Y., Mace Green of Norwalk, Conn., and Abie Green Jr. of the home; seven daughters, Annie Mae Allen of Norwalk, Louise Felder of Nesmith, S.C., Carrie Mae Lawson and Jeanette Sellers of Summerton, Minister Susan Williams of Panola, Mary Green of the home and Helen Canty of Meriden, Conn.; two sisters, Lucille Brunson and Susan McConico of White Plains, N.Y.; seven grandchildren of the home; 26 additional grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Services were 2 p.m. Monday at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church with the Rev. Warren Hatcher officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Isreal McCoy Jr.
Isreal “Smokey” McCoy Jr., 63, widower of Loretta Bradford McCoy, died Thursday, December 20, 2001, at his home.

Born June 3, 1938, in Gable, he was the son of the late Isreal McCoy Sr. and Louse Goodman McCoy. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church. After moving to New York, he joined Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Chapter No. 10 - Royal Arch Masons, Meridian Lodge No. 69, AF&AM, Mt. Cavalry Commandery No. 3 - Knight Templars, Jesse Williams Lodge of Perfection No. 1 - AASR, Valley of N.Y. Etemanki Temple No. 2 - AAONMS, Oasis of N.Y., and St. James Consistory No. 2 - Valley of N.Y. He was a past patron of Magnolia Chapter No. 56 Order of Eastern Star. He was employed by French and Polyclinic Hospital from 1960 to 1974. He retired from Brooklyn Hospital in 1998, as a pathologist.

Survivors include a son, William Allen “Smokey” McCoy of Gable; three daughters, Jacqueline McLawhorn, Claudia Evette McCoy and Kim Vermel McCoy, of Bronx, N.Y.; five brothers, Roosevelt McCoy of Landham, Md., Willie Mack McCoy of Landover, Md., Thomas Allen McCoy of Springdale, Md., Harry McCoy of Capital Heights, Md., and David McCoy of Gable; two sisters, Clara Ceasar of Philadelphia, Pa., and Margaret Boyd of Bronx; and seven grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Carnell Hampton and Dr. Solomon Bradford assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Syliva Pearson Scoby
Syliva Pearson Scoby died Wednesday, December 19, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 20, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of William and Theola Ragin Pearson. She was a graduate of Seward Park High School in New York, N.Y., and was employed by AT&T Telephone Co. for a number of years. She was also employed by Mobilization for Youth Organization and was a member of Dewitt Memorial Baptist Church in New York.

Survivors include four sons, Richard Scoby of Brooklyn, Keith Scoby and Derek Scoby of New York, N.Y., and Kenneth Scoby of Manning; and five sisters, Alice Jones, Setira Purdue and Lovetta Moore of New York, Mamie Matthews of Queens and Patricia Baez of Brooklyn.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home with the Revs. C. Richburg and Terry Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Pearson Chapel Cemetery.

Geraldine M. Bailey
TROY, N.C. -- Geraldine “Gerry” McMillan Bailey, 69, wife of Morgan C. Bailey, died Tuesday, January 1, 2002.

Born in South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Hugh L. and Beatrice Pulaski McMillan. She graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in elementary education. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Child Study Club and many other organizations. She was a retired teacher of the Montgomery County schools and was a retired manager of Capel Mill Outlet Store.

Survivors besides her husband of the home include three sons, Trip Bailey of Crofton, Md., Mack Bailey of Silver Spring, Md. and Tom Bailey of Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Marvin E. McMillan of Manning; and four grandchildren.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Elliott officiating.

Memorials may be made to Geraldine M. and Morgan C. Bailey Elementary Education Endowment c/o Montgomery County Fund, P.O. Box 116 Troy, N.C. 27371 or Trinity United Methodist Church Garden of Memory, 239 N. Russell St. Troy, N.C. 27371.

Wilbur C. Epps Sr.
Wilbur Clifton Epps Sr., 77, husband of Mildred Helen Craig Epps, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Feb. 6, 1924, in New Zion, he was the son of the late John J. and Italene Tomlinson Epps. He was a retired U.S. Marshall, a former Clarendon County Sheriff’s Deputy, former SLED Agent, former Mason and Shriner, former member of the Summerton Lion’s Club, past member and Elder of Summerton Presbyterian Church, and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of New Zion; a son, Wilbur Clifton “Cliff” Epps Jr. of New Zion; two daughters, Debbie Geary and her husband, John, of Columbia and Aggie Monroe and her husband, Hugh, of Dalzell; two sisters, Vivian Towns and Elizabeth Barbery of Summerville; and three grandchildren, Malcolm Monroe, Hunter Epps and Cameron Epps.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Midway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rodney Foster officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church.

Susie M. Hinton
Susie Marcella Morris Hinton, 63, wife of Thomas E. Hinton, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ezra Morris and James Geneva Baker Morris. She was a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, Rusty Harrington of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Compton of Sumter; a stepson, Billy Hinton of New Jersey; two stepdaughters, Linda Pagliaro of New Jersey and Susan Miller of North Carolina; a brother, Billy Morris of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Ruth Berry and Elma Berry of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were 4 p.m. in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Smith officiating.

Burial followed in Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Cemetery.

Robert L. Matthews
HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Robert Lee “Rabbit” Matthews, 69, died Thursday, December 27, 2001, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law.

Born in Newberry, he was the son of the late Kelly Matthews Sr. and Lois Ray Matthews. He was the husband of Mildred Morton Matthews.

Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Linda Diane Matthews of High Point, N.C.; three brothers, Nathaniel Matthews, Kelly Matthews Jr. and the Rev. Johnus Matthews of the home; one sister, Elizabeth Stubbs of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives.

Services were 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Living Water Baptist Church of High Point, N.C. with the Rev. Javatis Johnson, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Katheleen Brown, Ulysess Welch and Evangelist Louise Welch assisting.

Burial followed in Guilford Memorial Park in Jamestown, N.C.

Willie M. Spann Sr.
COLUMBIA -- Willie “Gyp” Moses Spann Sr., 73, widower of Edith Wright Spann, died Monday, December 31, 2001, at Providence Hospital Northeast.

Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late George Spann Sr. and Malvenia Smalls Spann. He attended Clarendon County public schools and was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors besides his wife include five sons, Willie Spann Jr. of Myrtle Beach, Willie Huggins of Boston, Mass., Ernest Huggins of Dorchester, Mass., and Willie Mood Major and Roger Gamble of Manning; nine daughters, Bernice Spann Dennis of Rembert, Polly Spann Kershaw of Nashville, Tenn., Deloris Spann Purnell of Sumter, Margaret Spann James of Yorktown, Va., Sandra Spann McKnight of Columbia and Clara Mae Huggins, Johnnie Mae Huggins, Mary Huggins and Patricia Huggins Wooten; four brothers, Johnnie Spann, Harold Spann and Ellison Spann of Pinewood and George Spann of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Pauline Billups of Sumter and Thelma Holland of Pinewood; and 25 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Elliott Spann; and four sisters, Camilla Conyers, Inell Spann, Mary Robinson and Irene Conyers.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie L. Wright and Minister Gary Conyers officiating.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Gussie R. Parker
Gussie Ragin Palmer Parker, 92, widow of Anthony Palmer and Ulysses Parker, died Thursday, January 31, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 28, 1909, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. Ragin and Josie Brown Ragin. She attended Clarendon County public schools and was a graduate of Manning Training School. She also attended Allen University. In her youth, she was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. She taught school in Clarendon County for a number of years before marrying and moving to New York City. After returning to South Carolina in 1970, she joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully with the communion stewards.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Velma Bennett White Palmer of Sumter; two grandsons, Anthony Charles Palmer and Marcus Edmund Palmer; a step-grandson, Dwayne White of Millville, N.J.; two sisters, Edith Ragin Thompson of Summerton and Julian Ragin McDonald of Sumter; and a sister-in-law, Louise Parker Hilton of New York City.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles J. Palmer.

Services were 1 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Adams Best, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Willie S. Stroy
DALEVILLE, Ala. — Willie S. Stroy, 54, husband of Levern Hilton Stroy, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at his home.

Born Feb. 23, 1947, in Manning, he was the son of Magnolia Spry Stroy and the late James Stroy. He attended Manning Training School and in his youth, joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. He later joined Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after 21 years, receiving the Army Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Bronze Star Medal and two Overseas Service Ribbons.

Survivors besides his wife of Daleville and his mother of Manning include a daughter, Melinda J. Stroy of Daleville; and three sisters, Anna Murray and Emily Brown of Manning and Pamela Fields of Columbia.

Services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Clarence Hilton assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
