Lonzie S. Powell
CONWAY - Lonzie Stalvey Powell, 81, died Thursday, February 7, 2002, at Conway Nursing Center.

Born in Conway, he was the son of the late Napoleon Moss and Onie Royals Powell. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Conway, where he was a member of the Hut Bible Sunday School Class. Mr. Powell served four years in WWII in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired real estate broker in Myrtle Beach.

Survivors besides his wife of 55 years, Virginia Floyd Powell of Conway, include a son, Bruce L. Powell of Manning and his wife, Jane; a daughter, Lannis P. Jordan of Conway and her husband, Richard; a sister, Vera Rankin of Loris and her husband, John; four grandchildren, Jenny Jordan of Bradenton, Fla., Natalie Cooper of Conway and Collin Powell and Caroline Powell of Manning; and one great-grandson, Furman Cooper of Conway.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John W. Hipp officiating.

Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Good Samaritan Fund of the Family Life Center, P.O. Box 58, Conway, S.C. 29528.

Essie G. Benbow
Essie Vermell Gibson Benbow, 93, widow of Wiley B. Holmes and Daniel Benbow Sr., died Friday, February 15, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 24, 1908, in Davis Station, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin J. Hodge and Rosa Dukes and the adopted daughter of the late James Columbus Hodge. She attended Clarendon County schools, where she graduated as valedictorian from the Kendall Institute for High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris College in 1947 and her Master’s in education from South Carolina State College in 1967.

In her youth, she attended Society Hill AME Church and later Mt. Zion AME Church, both in Davis Station. When her family moved to Sumter, they transferred their membership to St. James AME Church, which became Union Station AME Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed. She served as a Sunday school teacher, director of vacation Bible school, a member of the trustee board, stewardess board and missionary board.

She received a number of awards and citations for her work in the educational, civic, social and religious sectors.

She retired from public service as an elementary school teacher with the Clarendon County School District and Sumter District 17 in 1971 after 37 years of service.

Survivors include two sons, Nathaniel Benbow of Sumter and Michael Benbow of Fairfax; three daughters, Artrell Benbow Brown, Ethel Mae Logan and Frances Linton Brunson of Sumter; foster children, the Rev. and Mrs. Robert R. Hooper, James H. Taylor, Pancy C. Littles, Michelle Wright and Carrie Dell Hinnant of Sumter, William and Gloria Manning of Laurinburg, N.C., and Jackie D. Gray of San Francisco, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sylvia Y. Holmes and Gracye Benbow.

Services were 1 p.m. Monday at Union Station AME Church in Sumter with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Wm. F. Graham
Wm. F. Graham, 97, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, formerly of Columbia, died February 19, 2002.

Born Aug. 18, 1904, in Jordan, he was the son of John C. Graham and Frances Ora Lee Jones. He was first married to Mary Vivian Rawlinson and then to Eula Branham.

During his youth he mastered many skills that he used throughout his life. He was a registered hardwood lumber inspector, owned grocery store service stations and enjoyed fulfilling career developing residential real estate in Columbia. After retiring from home building he began investing in raw real estate.

He became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in South Carolina in 1935 and spent his productive years in touching the lives of many people. He was Branch Pres. in Winnsboro, S.C., and in St. Cloud-Kissimmee, Fla., Coun. to bishop, High Councilor for more than 20 years, teacher in auxiliaries and dance director in Ward and State MIA.

Survivors besides his wife include his children, Terri (Charles) Donalson, Eileen (Melvin) Harp, Steven (Janice) Graham, Randy (Diana) Graham, James Cullum and Mildred Louise, Connie Teresa, Brenda Eileen Bibbo, Stephen Franklin and William Randolph; a daughter-in-law, Eleda Graham; a son-in-law, Keith Jenson; 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings; his first wife; a son, J.C.; a daughter, Mildred; and two granddaughters.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at the Garden Stake Center, Pleasant Grove, Utah, with Berg Mortuary officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.

Marie L. Howe
Marie L Kolb Howe, 88, widow of William H. Howe, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1913, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel M. and Catherine McLeod Kolb. She attended Terrace Methodist Church in Beach Haven, N.J., and Paxville United Methodist Church and was a member of Paxville Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Prayer Breakfast of Paxville United Methodist Women. She also was owner and operator of Howe’s Marina at Long Beach Island, Beach Haven.

Mrs. Howe was retired from Beach Haven as director of welfare. She was a charter member of the Beach Haven Rescue Squad, a member of the Ladies Garden Club and a charter member of the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club.

Survivors include two sisters, Madge Turner and Hazel Dilworth of Paxville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Dick Broomall and Eugene Mosier officiating.

Pallbearers were F.D. Scott, Layne Osteen, Charles Ridgill, Jody Reynolds, Byron Ardis and Duane Reynolds.

Memorials may be made to Beach Haven First Aid Squad, 321 Engleside Ave., Beach Haven, N.J., 08008.

James L. McDuffie
James Lee “Bo/Spiderman” McDuffie, 56, widower of Lillie Ann Lemon McDuffie, died Sunday, February 17, 2002, at Providence Hospital.

Born Aug. 24, 1945, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, he was the son of Moses McDuffie Sr. and the late Sarah Hilton McDuffie. He attended Clarendon County public schools and Manning Training School. In his youth, he attended Mt. Zero Baptist Church and later became a watch care member of the Church of God by Faith, where he was active in Sunday school and the junior choir.

Survivors besides his father include a son, James McDuffie Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Jackie Divers of Baltimore; six brothers, Minister Richmond McDuffie, Moses McDuffie Jr. and Nathaniel McDuffie of Manning, Leon McDuffie of Sumter, Bishop McDuffie of Fayettville, N.C., and John Henry McDuffie of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Eva M. Spry and Hennie McDuffie of Manning and Beulah Gaillard of Pineville; an adopted brother, Ulysses Conyers of Columbia; four foster brothers, Dell, Willie Roy and Randall Conyers and James Hilton; a foster sister, Diana Myers; and six grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, and Elder James Taylor officiating and Elder Stephen Gibbs, Pastor Annie L. Riley and Minister Major Lloyd assisting.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Willine J. Scott
Willine Johnson Scott, 74, widow of Sidney Scott, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at South West Court.

Born Nov. 8, 1927, in the Goat Island community of Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Johnson Sr. and Blanche Carrigan Johnson. She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris College. In her youth, she joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. She taught school in South Carolina, Georgia and the Philippines and retired from Homestead Air Force Base in Florida.

Survivors include three sons, Sidney B. Scott of the home, Elton B. Scott of Atlanta, Ga., and Alton E. Scott of Miami; a daughter, Arline E. Moffett of the home; two brothers, Rochester Johnson of El Paso, Texas , and Preston Johnson of Sumter; two sisters, Thelma Tanner-Green of Salisbury, Md., and Ruby James of Rimini; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Willie, Bobby, Harold and Thomas Johnson Jr.; and two sisters, Bettye Nicholson and Lillie Eva Lee.

Services were 1 p.m. Tuesday at National Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiating.

Leon J. White
Leon Joseph White, 84, widower of Maude Suzanne Wilson White, died Friday, February 15, 2002, at his home.

Born December 27, 1917, in Manning, he was the son of the late Isaac Joseph White and the late Minnie DuBose White. He was a retired farmer and logger. Mr. White was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services were 3 p.m. Sunday in Oak Grove Cemetery in Manning.

John S. Georgia Sr.
John S. Georgia Sr., 56, husband of Naomi Dallas Georgia, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1945, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late David “Shing” Georgia and Corine Dozier Georgia. He was a 1960 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as an usher and custodian until his health failed.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, John D. Georgia and Abraham Eric Georgia of Summerton; two daughters, Detrice Brown and her husband Desmond of Summerton and Michelle Smith of Baltimore; four brothers, Harry, James and Clarence Georgia of Summerton and Jeremiah Georgia of Baltimore; three sisters, Rosa, Sue and Mary Georgia of Summerton; and six grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Dr. William T. Johnson and Naomi Georgia, pastor, officiated, assisted by Bishop Jeffery Johnson, the Rev. Albert Thomas and Johnnie Gilliam.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers and floral bearers were members of Scott’s Branch High School Class of 1968.

Joseph Lemon Jr.
1st Sgt. Joseph Lemon Jr., 50, husband of Nancy Peterson Lemon, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Health Hospital.

Born July 15, 1951, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Joseph Lemon Sr. and Pauline Walker Lemon. He was a graduate of Manning Training School, Class of 1969, and earned an associate degree from Williamsburg Technical College. He joined the U.S. Army and later the S.C. National Guard, serving a total of 32 years and obtaining the rank of 1st Sergeant in the Manning National Guard, Battery “C” 4/178th Field Artillery. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church, where he served on the trustee board and steward board and was a senior usher and pastor steward. He was employed for 27 years at Federal Mogul.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Chris Lemon and O.J. Lemon; two daughters, Keisha Lemon and Candi Lemon of the home; three godchildren, Courtney Holiday, Brandon Holiday and Brandi Holiday of Manning; three brothers, Johnny Moses and his wife Sarah Lemon of Bronx, N.Y., Wilbert Lemon and his wife Ethel and Bill Lemon and his wife Katherine of Manning; and four sisters, the Rev. Rebecca Riley and her husband Leon of Baltimore, Annie Rodgers and her husband Bill of North Carolina, Helen Clark and her husband John Peter of Nutley, N.J., and Maggie Robertson and her husband Earl of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Lemon; and two sisters, Ida R. Doughty and Ernestine Nicholson.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Church in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Summerton. The Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor, officiated, assisted by Elder Albert Thomas, the Revs. Jonathan Anderson, Herman Holland, Sampson Pearson and Rebecca Riley.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were S.C. Army National Guardsmen.

Honorary pallbearers were active and retired S.C. Army National Guardsmen.
