James L. Nelson
James Lee Nelson, 65, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born May 21, 1936, in the Potato Creek section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ida Mellerson Nelson and German Nelson.

In his youth, he attended St. James and Mount Zion Parochial Schools and later attended Scott’s Branch High School. He joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church where he served on the Junior Choir. He was also a member of the YMCA.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, James Nelson Jr., Kaline and Karen Sabb of Summerton and Johnnie and Sheilia Nelson of Connecticut; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, John and Georgia Nelson of Bronx, N.Y., and Evander and Pauline Nelson of Summerton; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary I. and Lawrence Waiters of Summerton and Lillian and Eddie Nelson of Bronx; five grandchildren; two aunts, Edith Gipson of Summerton and Willie Bradman of Long Island, N.Y.; and one uncle, Abraham Mellerson of Summerton.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The Rev. David Lawson officiated, assisted by Pastor Ocelia Blue and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were friends of the family. Floral bearers were missionary ladies.

James “Jim” Reinstra
SUMTER — James Vernon “Jim” Reinstra, 52, husband of Catherine Ham Reinstra, died Friday, April 26, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1949 in Kalamazoo, Mich., he was the son of the late Robert and Joyce Story Reinstra. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, James V. “Jimmy” Reinstra and Christopher Reinstra of Sumter; a daughter, Rhonda Coe of Jamestown, La.; two brothers, Charles Reinstra of Batesville, Ark., and David DeWitt of Auburndale, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services with full military honors were 3 p.m. Monday in Florence National Cemetery.

Derry Tindal
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Derry Tindal, 68, husband of Riller Jean Smith Tindal, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Born Aug. 15, 1933, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Wallace Tindal Sr. and Julia Dicks Tindal. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and served in the U.S. Army from 1949-53.

He then moved to New York, where he was employed as a welder for many years before he retired in the early 1990s.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include four daughters, Desirie Tindal of Manhattan, N.Y., and Deborah Tindal, Greta Tindal and Shermaine Tindal of Brooklyn; six sisters, Lillie Mae Lane of Springfield, Mo., Ida Hunter, Mary Wynn, Rebecca Davis and Marie Mickens of Sumter and Julia Tindal of Manning; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Tindal Ragin; and two brothers, Levy and Wallace Tindal.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion UM Church in Sumter. The Rev. James C. Lane officiated, assisted by the Revs. Willie F. Dicks and John Dicks.

Burial followed in Haynesworth Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers and nieces served as flower bearers.

Henry Frank Wallace
Henry Frank Wallace, 61, beloved husband of Linda Joyce Hudson Wallace, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at his home in Alcolu.

Born Feb. 24, 1941, in Lake City, he was the son of the late Johnny Marion Wallace and Vivian Hatchell Wallace. He was a retired heating and air technician, and a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church in North Augusta. He served in the National Guard for 10 years.

Surviving besides his wife of Alcolu are four sons, Jeff Allen of Robertsdale, Ala., Chris Allen and Jason Allen of Columbus, Ga., and Greg Wallace of North Augusta; three daughters, Angie Bullard of Columbus, Karen Allen of North Augusta, and Angie Wallace of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, Russell M. Wallace and wife Raye of Alcolu; a sister, Iva J. DeOliveira and husband Leo of Sumter; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Fred Treaster will officiate.

Burial will follow in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Evans, Hansel Hodge, Todd Barwick, Buck Hardy, Randy Feagin and Ernie Wallace.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Wallace, Johnny Burke, Ed Keels, Dennis McAbee and Charles Cain.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

Craig B. Young
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Craig Bruce Young, 40, died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Wycoff Height Medical Center.

Born Aug. 10, 1961, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Daisy B. Young and the late Deacon Tony Young Sr.

He was educated at Manning High School and was employed at Envelope Manufacturing Co. in Brooklyn. In his youth, he attended Sunday school and worship services at Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors include two sons, Dexter Alexander of St. Stephen and Stephon Terrel of New York; a daughter, Ebony Noel of St. Stephen; four brothers, Tony Young Jr. and his wife Catherine and Levy Young and his wife Dorothy of Manning, Albert Young and his wife Mary of Bronx, N.Y., and Lee Ernest Young of New York; and a sister, Ruth Mallett and her husband William of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Luebertha Young and a brother, Elias Young.

Services were 3 p.m. Friday at Green Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. J.S. Hudley, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. William J. Frierson, David Woods and Wayne Blackwell.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers and floral bearers were friends of the family.

James D. Burgess
James David Burgess Sr., 68, husband of Laraetta York Burgess, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his home.

Born June 7, 1933, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Edward Burgess Sr. and Lue Addie Francis Burgess. He attended Pleasant Grove School and Manning Training School. He was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher and a member of the board of deacons. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and retired from the S.C. Department of Transportation after 22 years.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include three sons, James David Burgess Jr. and his wife Eleicher of Fort Drum, N.Y., Toney Burgess and his wife Jacqueline of Fort Lee, Va., and Corey Burgess and his wife Adrina of Fort Jackson; a grandson he raised as his own, Brandon Burgess of the home; five daughters, Jacqueline Burgess of Sumter, Rhonda Bell and her husband Douglas of Fort Gordon, Ga.., Jamesetta Day and her husband Tyrone of McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla., Tiffani Burgess and Ashley Burgess of the home; two brothers, Edward Burgess Sr. and his wife Mary of Alcolu and Robert Burgess of Philadelphia; two sisters, Eva Ruth Brown of Alcolu and Margaret Wilson of Philadelphia; two foster sons, Billy Stackhouse of Greenville and James Marsh of Macon, Ga.; a foster daughter, Essie Stackhouse of Greenville; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Templar Brittany; and two sisters, Sally Mae Charles and Thelma Epps.

Services were 4 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony Presbyterian Church (USA).The Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiated, assisted by the Revs. Retha Nelson and Cokley Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Alva L. Burke
Alva Lamar Burke, 80, husband of Louise Johnson Burke, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Covenant Place.

Born in Alcolu, he was the son of the late George Washington and Mattie Amelia Geddings Burke. He was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Brenda Burke Mathis of Irmo, Anna Elizabeth “Libby” Burke of Wilmington, N.C., and Gayle Burke DeWitt of Easley; a brother, Paul B. Burke of Alcolu; six sisters, Mary B. Davis of Columbia, Jennie B. DuRant of Manning, Thelma B. Black of Alcolu, Eleanor “Tat” Moses of Sumter, Betty B. Gaines of Manning and Amelia Anne B. Alderman of Roanoke, Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bullock Funeral Home. Dr. Robert L. Alderman and Dr. Charles H. Hattaway officiated.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery.

Johnny Bradham, Wayne Burke, Brian Mathis, Brad Mathis, Erik Miller and Norwood Williams served as pallbearers.

Bailey B. Cole
Bailey Breann Cole, infant daughter of Brent and Susan Wolfe Cole, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at McLeod Hospital.

She was born April 18, 2002, in Florence.

Survivors besides her parents of Alcolu include her maternal grandparents, Maria Easley of Lugoff and James Wolfe of Bluefield, W.Va.; paternal grandparents, Dwayne and Brenda Cole of Camden, Tenn.; and maternal grandmother, Madge Early of Princeton, W.Va.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home.

George W. Dow
PINEWOOD - George William Dow, 78, husband of Mary Ann Dow, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born April 13, 1924, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Boston Dow and Dinah James Dow. He was educated in Clarendon County public schools. He joined Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini, where he served on the trustee board.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Leroy Dow and his wife Earlene, Leonard Dow and George Dow Jr. and his wife Margaret and Wayne Dow of New York; seven daughters, Rovener Adams and her husband Leroy, Patricia and her husband Alfonza, Celestine Dow, Edith Mae Dow and Marie Dow of New York, Martha Dow of Deluth, Ga., and Irma McConico and her husband Daniel of Rimini; a sister, Gladys Dow Hilton of Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini. The Rev. William Polite, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Amos Hatcher, Dewayne Hatcher and evangelist Deborah Green.

Burial followed in Spring Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers were trustees of Antioch RMUE Church and flower bearers were missionaries of the church.
