John C. Griffin
John Curtis Griffin Sr., 67, husband of Betty Lenora Rhodes Griffin, died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Roper Hospital.

Born April 17, 1935, in Cornelius, N.C., he was the son of the late William Collet Griffin and Mary Simpson Griffin. He was a retired salesman, an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Survivors besides his wife include three daughters, Janice Bostick of Mooresville, N.C., Kim Fingar of Manning and Amy Wear of Hilton Head; three sons, John Curtis Griffin Jr. of Woodbine, Ga., Mark Griffin of Columbia and Todd Griffin of Alcolu; two sisters, Perry Story and Evelyn Hastedt of Charlotte; and 13 grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Charlie Tyler officiated.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 143, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Merie B. King
Merie Bradshaw King, 74, widow of Henry W. King Sr., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 25, 1927, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Lena Bradshaw. She was raised by her uncle and aunt, the late Clifton Wallace Sr. and Caro Bradshaw Wallace.

She was educated at Santee-Rosenwald School in the Foreston Community. In her youth, she attended Sunday school and worship services at Pine Grove AME Church. She was a member of William Chapel Christian Church, where she served as church secretary. She was a retired employee of Sunbeam Corp. in Manning.

Survivors include three sons, Henry W. King Jr. and his wife Barbara, George King and his wife Mary and Flynn King of Manning; a daughter, Gwendolyn Smith and her husband Billy of Manning; two adopted brothers, Tommy Wallace and his wife Henrietta and Clifton Wallace and his wife Beaie of Landham, Md.; four adopted sisters, Gail Bradshaw and her husband Carrell, and Rose Carr and her husband Charles of Manning, Carole Starks and her husband John of Landham, and Dorothy Williams of Mitchelville, Md.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an adopted brother, David “Bo” Bradshaw; and an adopted sister, Rosa Lee Dennis.

Services were noon Sunday at William Chapel Christian Church. The Rev. Emanuel King, pastor, officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Virginia Lang
Virginia Lang, 68, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1934, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Jenkins Lang and Lillie Rhames Lang. She attended Clarendon County public schools.

In her youth, she attended St. Mark Baptist Church in the Silver community. She was employed by several local motels in the Summerton area

Survivors include two sons, Frank Lang of Clementon, N.J., and Pedro Lang of Manning; three daughters, Mary Ann Lang Richardson of Manhattan, N.Y., Susanne Lang and Geneva L. Smith of Summerton; a brother, Levi Lang of Summerton; four sisters, Deloris Lang and Alice Faye Durant of Summerton, Carrie James of Bronx, N.Y., and Julia Torez of West Atco, N.J.; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, a niece and six aunts.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. W.J. Chandler officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Sarah R. Royster
Sarah Richardson Royster, 83, widow of Isaac Royster, died Thursday, April 25, 2002.

Born Oct. 11, 1919, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Malachi and Laura Quarles Richardson. She was educated in the Clarendon County public schools. At an early age, she joined Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church in Rimini.

Survivors include a brother, Charles Richardson and his wife Deloris of Rimini; and five sisters, Naomi Adams and Ruth Channey of Rimini, Maude Dickerson and her husband Moses of New York, Flossie Mack of Buffalo, N.Y., and Josephine Robinson and her husband Mack of Orlando, Fla.
She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene James; and four brothers, Wiley, Henry, Eddie and Jacob Richardson.

Services were 2 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church. The Revs. Dr. Sylvester Miott and Powell Hampton Jr. officiated.

Burial followed in the Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church cemetery.

The Rev. Melvin E. Sargent The Rev. Melvin E. Sargent
The Rev. Melvin Eugene Sargent, 79, husband of Dot Hamlin Sargent, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at his home in Summerton.

Born July 7, 1922, in Liberty, he was the son of the late David Seaborn Sargent and Leota Whitlock Sargent. He graduated from North Greenville Junior College, Furman University and Southwestern Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas . He was a Navy veteran and a retired Baptist minister having served in Cateechee, S.C., Hearne, Texas , St. George, Branchville, Orangeburg and Summerton. He retired on Oct. 31, 1991. He was Pastor Emeritus of Summerton Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Summerton include two sons, J. Randall “Randy” Sargent and wife Donna of Orangeburg and Craig Sargent and wife Cindy of Summerton; a daughter, Pam Stone and husband Mitch of Orangeburg; two brothers, Lloyd Sargent and Carl Sargent of Liberty; four sisters, Lois Atkinson and Nell Smith of Liberty and Fannie Greer and Ida Thomas of Easley; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Sargent; and a sister, Beatrice Chapman.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday in Summerton Baptist Church. The Revs. Rob Pierce, Norman Gillespie, Wallace Hughes and David Dinkins officiated.

A private interment followed in Summerton Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Preston Fout, Jeff Lowder, David Patrick, John Skelley, Roddy Stanton and Roy Witherspoon.

Honorary pallbearers were J. C. Crook, Dr. Daulton DuBose, Dr. Robert Eagerton, Wilbur Fogle, James Garrick, Behling Hartzog, Raymond Lewis, the Rev. Mike Lowder, Benny McAlhaney, Jack McAlhaney, the Rev. Tom Mellette, Gene Pettit, Dr. Gene Phillips and Billy Reeves.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 2650-B Hardee Court, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Stephens Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James D. Sullivan
James “Jimmy” David Sullivan, 66, husband of Ruby Spigner Sullivan, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at his home.

Born in Williamsburg County, he was the son of the late Lucious Samuel Sullivan and Julia Way Sullivan.

He was a S.C. State Constable, a member of the Turbeville Town Council, a mason and member of Fidelity Lodge #394, and a member of Pine Grove United Methodist church and the Methodist Men’s Club. He was owner and operator of Sullivan’s Auto Parts.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Cheryl Wingard and her husband Keith and Julie Lee and her husband Stein of Turbeville; a son, David Sullivan and his wife Tammy of Turbeville; two sisters, Maxine Sullivan of Columbia and Clara Epps of Manning; one brother, Jackie Sullivan of Sumter; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a special mother-in-law, Lillie B. Spigner of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a son, Maxie Sullivan.

Services were 4 p.m. Monday at Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Larry D. Charles
Larry Donelm Charles, 41, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, in Alcolu.

Born Dec. 12, 1960, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, he was the son of Mary Charles Parham. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Robert and Sallie Burgess Charles. He was educated at Manning High School and was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Alcolu. He was a retired employee of Georgia-Pacific for over 20 years and was employed at Carolina Golden Products in Sumter.

Survivors besides his mother of Port Chester, N.Y., include four brothers, Arthur Parham and his wife Valerie, Anthony Parham and his wife Stephine, Creg Parham and Gregory Parham of Port Chester; a sister, Sherry Parham of Port Chester; an aunt that was raised with him as a sister, Naomi Hammett and her husband Albertus of Manning; three great-aunts, Eva Brown and Laraetta Burgess of Alcolu and Margaret Wilson of Philadelphia; and three uncles, Edward Burgess and his wife Mary of Alcolu, Robert Burgess of Philadelphia and Edward Epps of Baltimore.

Services were 4 p.m. Thursday at Harmony Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, moderator, officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Thomas L. Rhodes
EDISTO ISLAND - Thomas Lee Rhodes, 79, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the Collecton Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1922, in Walterboro, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lee Rhodes and Leila Mae Morris Rhodes. He was the retired owner and operator of Rhodes Truck Stop in Summerton. He was a member of Edisto Island United Methodist Church, a member of the Omar Shrine Temple and a veteran of WWII.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Lee “Dusty” Rhodes Jr. of Summerton; a daughter, Janice R. Pearce of Charleston; a brother, John B. Rhodes of Walterboro; a sister, Carolyn R. Ramsey of Walterboro; three grandsons, Thomas Lee Rhodes III, Austin T. Rhodes and William G. Pearce Jr.; and his devoted friend, Racheal O’Quinn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Crosby Rhodes; and two sons, Daniel Jeff Rhodes and George Herman Rhodes.

Services were 2 p.m. Friday in Doctors Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Stan LaTorre officiated.

Burial followed in Doctors Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Edisto Island United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8193 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, S.C. 29438.
